Athanes, officially the Federation of Athanes, is a country in the Pacific Ocean. Athanes is a collection of many large and small islands in the Pacific, with a total area of 9,008,458 kmĀ². Athanes was founded in 1951, following independence being granted by the two main nations holding territory in the area, France and Great Britian. Agreements with the then-Athanic government resulted in all the islands of Athanes being granted to the Federation, France and the United Kingdom surrendering their territory in the area in 1961.

The modern day borders of Athanes were created following the partition of Athanes and Malenur, in which the independent Republic of Malenur was created in 1982. Soon after, Malenur fell into a civil war which saw the complete collapse of the state's government, with the fighting continuing to this day with little intervention from Athanes. Calls for independence in the Tunala string of islands has resulted in the creation of several terrorist groups, which resulted in the beginning of Operation Unity in 1990, which continues to this day. A form of civil war is beckoning in Tunala, which resulted in Athanic troops in Tunala being strengthened from 2,000 to 5,000.

Athanes is a developed country, with a high HDI, a booming economy and a low poverty rate. A growth in oil drilling and fishing which began in the late 1900s has spearheaded the growing economy, which is expected to become a powerhouse within the next few years. Athanes is also famous for its generous social welfare and brilliant public healthcare.

History.

Human habition of Athanes is estimated to have begun 40,000 years ago. The current native populations in Athanes is directly related to this first inhabitants, whose populace totals 25% of the Athanic population. Before European colonization in the late 19th century, over five hundred native nations were in existance and regularly battled each other in many shapes and forms. Colonization began around 1856, the islands first being discovered by Walter Williams, a British explorer who declared the islands a 'British territory', though the French explorer Mathieu De Gaullius challenged his claims by declaring Athanes a 'French territory'.

The native populations fought back hard against 'European oppression', but the British/French arms proved to much for the natives, and they were eventually defeated. After WWI, Britian and France signed a treaty which declared the borders between their colonies, as before that the alignment of colonies were regularly changing, such as how Tunala was one day a British territory and the next day a French territory for two days in 1933.

Whenever WWII broke out, Athanes, still divided between British and French colonies, was invaded by Imperial Japan. The British and French, who had previously brought their fleet back to Europe, were caught unawares, and the Japanes conquered half of the islands before the American fleet liberated the conquered islands.

In 1951, the Federation of Athanes was founded, with about three quarters of Athanic islands being Athanic territory until 1961, in which a treaty with Britian and France united all Athanic territory under the Federation.

In 1981, the city-state of Malenur declared its independance but collapsed shortly after in a bloody civil war which continues to this day. Athanes has taken no action on the Malenurian Civil War.

The islands of Tunala recently declared their independance, and international condemnation has been widespread for their policy of exterminating all Europeans on their islands, with a native military junta being started.
