Olyan - The entire nation was stunned today when it was announced by the agency in charge of royal proclamations that the Queen of Kageb has confessed that she is of lesbian orientation and that she has entered a civil union with a courtesan identified only as Scarlet according to media leaks. While the people of Kageb either scathingly condemn or praise the Queen, there are rumors that the centuries old dynasty - founded by our first King - could collapse after Her Majesty's death....
The Queen had done the unthinkable in the span of her reign, the reign which may have been tainted forevermore with this unbelievable declaration that Queen Ravana of Kageb was of lesbian extraction and that her lover and civil partner was an Alversian courtesan. This was news that the nobility discussed violently in the confines of their mansions and which several priests condemned so much that they exempted Her Majesty from their daily prayers, replacing her with "more modest" people in her family such as Prince Espar who, despite his own sins, had been more virtuous in their sight. The media was torn by the scandal at hand, as was everyone in the nation, with some journalists demanding the immediate abdication of the Queen while others said that, if she was going to find love in another woman, that she could have picked someone more respectable - Scarlet, the woman Ravana loved, was demonized by many as nothing short of a disgrace, an absolute blemish upon the land.
Excerpt from the Olyan Times (Comments made by individual citizens on the article pertaining to the Queen's union) -
1. "She should abdicate her throne. Simple as that."
2. "I think it's nice that the Queen found love but couldn't it have been someone other than a street slut?"
3. "There's nothing more disgusting than homosexuals creeping into our society's most esteemed institution. Let's get rid of the Queen, bring back Prince Espar!"
4. "I pray for your soul, Your Majesty, and ask you to recant of your disgraceful sin."
As the Queen walked out of the bedroom one night, having consumated her civil union with Scarlet again with the same sort of violent passion, the Queen took her seat at the fireplace and bitterly sighed, wondering if she should try to salvage her reputation. She knew that the Baron Soryana, despite his hesitation to accept the arranged union, would still serve her 'as I ought to," and that the Armed Forces reaffirmed their loyalty to their Queen, even though some officers resigned, refusing to serve the "royal dyke," as they labeled their once beloved monarch. The Queen sighed again, remembering how cruelly she was being treated, how her beloved Scarlet was being demonized, how her family was trying its best to handle things, with some relatives calling her a dreadful person, a disgrace to the First King's bloodline! How it hurt for her own family - her own family! - to disavow her like that, to beg that she reconsider and find a man - a VIRTUOUS man - to be tied down with. Harlots will NEVER be good mothers, someone said.
Excerpt from the Kageb Broadcasting Network's Questions and Answers (Debate between a gay rights activist and a moralist) -
GLBT Activist: "The Queen has the right to find love no matter who it is with."
Moralist: "Well, then, couldn't pedophiles use that argument?"
GLBT Activist: "Excuse me, but that's quite the comparison....."
The Queen looked at the flames as the wood burned and nodded her head, her eyes glaring with rage upon those who she came to scorn, who she had been scorned by for these past few days - She would rule the nation until her death and Scarlet would be her Queen Consort until she died. That night, she ordered a proclamation to be released. In the event, it said, that the Queen of Kageb is to die without an heir (it was the worry of some nobles that commoners' sperm from a donor could be used....), then Prince Espar of Kageb shall inherit the throne..." As he should have, Ravana once said, before ordering it to be swiftly circulated.
What would the world think? Would they rush to condemn her or would they herald her as the living triumph of love or hate?
Excerpt from the Olyan Times -
"Her Majesty has begun to suffer one of the most tremendous losses to royal popularity in the history of our nation. Some Catholic priests have omitted her from their prayers during the Holy Mass in what they have deemed to be the proper course of action. The Queen's image is being scorned all over our nation, with many demanding immediate abdication, while some newspapers printed some cartoons in which Scarlet - the Queen's soulmate - has been depicted as a common prostitute with fishnet stockings and the like and the Queen as a common john, a purchaser of services. The producers of local erotica have begun to flirt with lesbian themes in recent works and GLBT activists march in the streets calling for an end to the condemnations. What is now being debated is how the dynasty will continue in light of the Queen's lesbianism. If she resorts to a sperm donor than this may anger the critics even more.....especially with the possibility that the used sperm came from a commoner....."

Miss Chang,
Although I must tell you how thankful I am to receive your support for the solemnization of my union with the woman I love, I must tell you that we have no plans to scrap the monarchy which we have had for centuries. It must be said that the absolute monarchy in Kageb has been very popular over the years and that many people would gladly retain it over any other form of government. Nonetheless, I once again thank you for your support and offer of asylum.

It is my utmost opinion that the boundaries that divide homosexuals and heterosexuals ought to replaced by brotherhood and solidarity between both. I, for one, must admit that I am of the opinion that homosexuals do not need to be married - in the heterosexual version of marriage - to find happiness but I am of the opinion that they deserve the same basic rights that we all take for granted in our world, the ones denied to people regardless of orientation. Though the majority of the world was already basking in early spring sunshine the Commonwealth was still gripped in the last stages of winter, leaving those working in the early hours waking and entering their workplaces in the dark.
Junior-Colonel Hieronim Myczul was amongst these people as he strode into his office, flicked on the lights and sighed at the small mountain of papers in his "In" box. He managed to hang his grey-brown overcoat and chapka and look through the documents before being interrupted.
- 'Dzien dobry, panie pulkovniku.'
Myczul grunted in reply as he glanced at the new papers that ended up on his desk.
- 'Anything Important?' - He asked.
- 'Is it ever? They even added this into the bundle.'
The junior officer stated handing one of the papers. Myczul took it, glanced at the contents and snorted, partialy from amusement, partialy from disgust.
- 'Really, what is this world coming too.'
The liuetenant snorted as well as he collected some off the papers that Myczul had already placed in the "out" tray but was stopped.
- 'This country... is it an absolute monarchy or constitutional?'
- 'Errr...'
- 'Who is this Scarlet? What sort of influence does she hold?'
- 'Sir!'- The liuetenant stiffened has he realized the conversation had taken a more serious tone, - 'Little known. Described by local media as a "harlot". The countries Queen seems to be completly infatuated and it is suspected that she is in complete sway off the woman, sir.'
- 'Find out for sure. I want a full report on my desk within an hour along with information on the political stance of this "Prince Espar", along with any chance that there could be negative changes in the countries stance and stability.'
The liuetenant saluted and left leaving Myczul to look over the report again as he cursed inwardly, damn monarchs and their favourites! Always so much trouble when a supreme ruler took on a new bedwarmer. Why couldn't more countries be like the Commonwealth and its long traditions of keeping monarchs in their place?
* * *
Similar trouble rose in the Belveder as politicians wondered what sort of complications a monarchs new favourite would introduce into the international arena.

Prince Espar had been sleeping soundly in his bed when he had been notified of his younger sister's confession to the nation and, being in the same sort of situation with a woman that he had loved, the Prince immediately began to investigate the situation with help from his connections in Olyan. He was a very handsome and chivalrous man who gave up the throne - and the absolute power behind it - for marriage to a supermodel of Jewish ancestry who he had met some time before he was meant to take control. If Ravana could find support in any man, wouldn't it have been her own brother?
Espar was sitting on a train heading to Olyan while his wife was looking out the window at the rolling plains, not noticing her husband's emotionless contemplating of what was going on in the capital. Espar was wearing some fine tailored clothes while his wife wore a new dress she had purchashed, although he was tempted to see her out of it sometime in the capital, because he made it perfectly clear to himself that his married life must never be impaired by his sister's decision. He expressed a desire to meet Scarlet and see why the Queen chose her over all women, not knowing Scarlet's latent abilities and he wouldn't want to know at all, because Esther Kaufman, his own wife, was the best woman in the world to him.
Excerpt from the Sermon of Father Joseph Suras: ".....Her Majesty the Queen of Kageb has committed a most grevious sin in the eyes of Our Lord and, as such, ought to seek forgiveness for her sins under the Most Holy Blood of Our Lord who, for sins such as hers, died upon the Cross....."
Espar looked over the comments in the latest issue of the Olyan Times with a mixture of indifference, of shame, of utter disgust and Esther finally turned to him and held his hand, wondering why he was so upset with himself, knowing why when he told her that he should have inherited the throne, that Ravana should have not been faced with what ought to have been his responsibilities. As they cuddled together in their seat, Espar kissed his wife and drowned his cares in that sweet bliss.
-------------
As the Prince's train pulled into the station at Olyan, the Baron Soryana shuffled through the reports that he had recieved concerning foreign powers, those who gave support to Her Majesty about this whole affair with Scarlet, something he himself didn't seem to care about. Love is love, let the Queen live as she wants. How many of these critics really cared about the Monarchy before this occured? The Baron sighed, he'd rather be with his wife and children in the countryside but he had to deal with these reports, and it bugged him so much that at one point he decided to go home early - telling his secretary that she was free to do the same if she wanted.
The Baron got into his limosuine and ordered his chauffer to drive off towards his mansion in the Nobles' Suburbs of Olyan, where men and women of his rank had lived. There were people discussing the Queen as they walked, some holding up signs such as "God DAMN the Queen!" which irked him just a little bit, knowing fully well that there was a possibility.....
No, he thought, he could not let such a thought climb into his mind, no matter how indifferent he really was to the Queen finding love - and sexual satisfaction - in an Alversian courtesan. He knew that one of his colleagues in the Foreign Ministry was making crude jokes about the Queen's union, but what could you expect? Either lesbians are condemned for giving up on finding a man or they're the most exotic beings around, their sexual escapades filmed for people to watch in their basements......the Baron knew this well, knowing how much lesbianism appeared in those local porn flicks some of his men would watch, although he never was able to prove it, not that he gave a damn anyways.
As his limosuine pulled up at his mansion, the Baron did not notice that a group of protesters shouting support for the immediate impeachment of the Queen were marching in Olyan, demanding that Prince Espar and his wife become the new King and Queen of Kageb, demanding that Ravana and Scarlet be forced out of the Royal Court. God damn the Queen, they mockingly sang, God damn the dyke that we call our Queen.

Mr. Chang,
The rights of all citizens are universally protected in our nation despite our government being organized according to the merits of the absolute monarchist system. While we will make no moves towards the dismantlement of the absolute monarchy we currently possess, we shall make sure that the rights of homosexuals are safeguarded as they have been for numerous years - for our charters decree that 'all men and women, regardless of distinction, shall be given equal rights," and we must, to be honest, take offense at your claim that absolute monarchies cannot protect the rights of homosexuals. Yet, I hope our disagreement does not lead to bitter contempt. We must try to build bridges, not blow them away.

Queen Ravana of Kageb.

<<OOC: Awwww, but blowing up bridges is fun! I'm just trying to be funny here, don't mind me.......>>>
Prince Espar had visited the Queen on the night that he had arrived in Olyan, his calm demeanour not betraying him as he entered the palace whilst his wife decided that she would not accompany him, viewing this matter as something he ought to handle alone with his own flesh and blood. If one was to tell him that the increase in demands for abdication were continuing to grow all around the nation, he wouldn't call it anything more or less than an expected development aggravated by the intensity of missionaries, a group of people who hated the Queen. As he drove through the streets of Olyan, he was cheered by many citizens who called for him to dethrone his sister and some of them were begging him, begging him to save their nation from the sins of a wicked witch, something Espar was a tad irked with.
He walked calmly into the Queen's chambers and looked around, wondering if he really ought to persuade her to abdicate for the sake of national stability -a thought that had entered people's minds ever since this whole thing began. When he saw Ravana sitting in her seat, Espar smiled. "I trust you are well, despite the atmosphere of hatred all around you. This must be worse than the scandal I caused with......"
Ravana grinned. "This is nothing but intolerance at its worst, my brother, and I am not going to abdicate my throne nor abandon my love for Scarlet simply because they desire it. I will die a Queen, I will not live as a weakling."
Espar nodded his head. "Your love for this woman is admirable and I am sure your words are not mere lip service to those who died for their own loves, as the stories do tell us....it is my hope that this will all end soon, for I fear Kageb will drift into chaos....and God alone knows what some will do....."
There was a moment of silence and then Espar's eyes turned over towards Scarlet. He smiled and bowed before this infamous woman with a sly grin. "Miss Scarlet, it is a pleasure to meet one of our nation's most hated personalities. I am the brother of your beloved partner in life, Prince Espar, and I'm sure the Queen has told you all about who I am. I'm just hear to see how she is doing and I hope you are in high spirits. May I inquire as to what you think of the situation? Do you want Ravana to abdicate?"

By definition, an "absolute" monarchy can not be held accountable. Any rights bestowed by an absolute monarch - no matter how benevolent - can be removed just as easily by a successor.
To have any true value, rights must be guaranteed by the system, not by the whim of the current office-holder.

It is with some level of concern that I write to you now on a personal level. Our nation and our Church have no qualms with your orientation or choices, not in an official capacity nor very likely in an unofficial capacity.
However, the concern in my heart is that you lack proper understanding of your duties to your people. A queen, a duke, a baron all have a responsibility to the system, the nation, and the people who look to them for leadership and place their faith in for the continuance of the stability of their society and state. It is with deep regret, therefore, that I hear of the callous fashion in which a leader has decided their own selfish whims are more important than the good the country. I ask how you may call yourself nobility, how you can rightfully call yourself noble, following the complete refusal to acknowledge that your life is not your own, it is that of your people.
To be noble is to be self-sacrificing. There is a contract between you and your people. It is a sacred bond that should never be broken, for fear of lapsing into the tyrannical regimes seen across the world when the ruling class decided they need no longer concern themselves with the protection of the people under their care. And that is indeed what those citizens of your state are: dependents who require your sacrifice of your personal happiness, your desires, your very life in order to maintain peaceful prosperity. How then, could a noble ever decide that her sexual satisfaction weighs more heavily in her desires than the continuance of regime the people have placed their faith thereon.
To throw out decades, centuries, millennia of tradition, and to risk the existence of your nation for such a selfish desire is not noble. Your desires should rest in the good of the state above all, not the good of your body.
It is my sincere hope that you realize the error in which you have conducted yourself.

Mr. Chang,
By your reasoning, a democratically elected leader may overturn the rights cemented in place by his predecessors. He may say to himself that human rights are but obstacles to his rule and thus he may dismiss them as mere words without meaning. This has happened according to the histories of the world in several nations and, by your reasoning, both of our systems are at fault. Wouldn't you agree that this has been the case?

It is possible that you could have abandoned her and fled back to Alversia, but I don't suspect that you'd do that. You must have heard that the Queen has already made it known that she plans to reign until death, I assume?"
Espar smiled while the Queen silently observed their discussion. "Scarlet, perhaps you yourself could appeal to the masses? After all, perhaps you'd like to tell the people how you don't mean any harm to their precious monarchy and so on, right?"

Not at all. A democratically elected leader is responsible to his or her constituents. He or she may be removed from office for much lesser cause than violating the constitution. And he or she most certainly can not overturn any rights entrenched in the constitution.
On the other hand, by definition, an absolute monarch is responsible to nobody.
It is my sincere hope that you realize the error in which you have conducted yourself.
It was another day of debate and condemnation in the city of Olyan, where the Queen had been engaging herself in a vigorous debate with a gay rights activist over the merits of absolute monarchism, where there were increased calls for the Queen's abdication, and where the Queen had made a public announcement in light of Duchess Bianca's letter that she would reign, with Scarlet, until the day that she died. Abdication was anathema. They'd have to kill her in order to force her out of the Royal Court and who knows what Espar would have done if they had assassinated the most famous monarch in recent years.
While the city of Olyan was consumed by the tension caused by the Queen's proclamation, there happened to be some commotion in a country chateau where the Queen's two sisters, Janata and Nymira, had been living for these past few years. As was expected, both of them had heard of what was going on in Olyan. While Janata didn't seem to have an opinion, being only fourteen, her eighteen year old sibling seemed to dislike the idea of a lesbian monarch, feeling simply uncomfortable with what she thought was not proper for a reigning monarch. And she didn't mind voicing her opinions in a letter to the Queen, in which she said, in all of her sisterly affection, that this arrangement could not be accepted by her that well. It was at this chateau that Nymira and her friends would discuss the situation while Janata, playing with her own friends, was more concerned with fashion and K-Metal bands than with who her eldest sibling found love in.
There once was a group of citizens in the city of Pala that decided to circulate a petition in the hopes of getting the Queen to abdicate in favor of one of her siblings. The leader of this group of individuals was a middle aged man who worked as a local writer for the daily bulletin. He had been quite vocal in opposing the civil union, giving support to Duchess Venturini when her message was leaked to the masses, condemning Scarlet as a modern day Jezebel. In an address to the people of Pala, he wrote that they must force the Queen off the throne before Kageb's image is ruined. With a petition of over a thousand signatures, so it was said, they marched towards Olyan.
"We the undersigned hereby request the unconditional abdication of the Queen of Kageb, Ravana, and request that His Highness, the Prince Espar, take the throne in accordance with the will of the undersigned...."
Viscount Lamin was the man who had commanded Kageb's Armed Forces ever since Ravana's father had reigned - he had been known for his ruthlessness and contempt for interventionism - and he was often said to have never said a single word on the crisis at hand. If needed, he'd use the Army to pacify citizens but what if the Army supported a revolution? A revolution over lesbianism? It sounded disgustingly absurd to the Viscount, who met with the Baron Soryana to discuss the situation. This could mean the end of their jobs if the Queen abdicates, the Viscount figured, so they had to do something.
The Viscount's palace was typically elegant and had what you may call the nobles' charm around it. You would have expected such a man's home to have such a charm, for he was a nobleman of high status, and was in possession of wondrous things that mocked and enchanted the poor of the realm. The two noblemen were on horses and they spoke as they rode down a trail in the woods owned by the Viscount and his family - "I think the Queen's going to have to be ruthless eventually," - and the Viscount looked grim, as if he knew something was going to happen.
Excerpt from Her Royal Highness Princess Nymira's Letter to Her Majesty, Queen Ravana of Kageb:
"My sister - while I love you with all of my heart and soul, I must tell you with a sorrowful heart how I cannot accept your arrangement with the woman they call Scarlet, for I fear that it shall bring stability to its end, and I must confess that I hardly think it is befitting of you, of anyone, to be in such a relationship at all. A part of me must concur with those who think you're only in a union with Scarlet because the sex is good, and I must admit that this sort of thing is absolutely disgusting in my mind. If that is why you took her in your union, I will have no choice but to support those desiring immediate change....."
The Queen was saddened by this letter that she had read. She had to admit to herself that one of the motivations for the union was that the sex was good, no, great but she wanted Nymira to know that love was the deciding factor and not sexual ability - she didn't want to cause an even greater rift in the family that she wanted to maintain. She didn't know what Janata thought, the young child that she was, and a part of her didn't want to know at all.
The petition had fallen on deaf ears as was expected by the online bloggers including one blogger who famously told his audience that he didn't give a damn about the Queen's lesbianism because he had felt that more important matters were at hand. The police were on heightened alert, it seemed, something that Detective Nelenna Ghevas had known. Nelenna Ghevas had seen everything - from child murderers (she hated them the most) to people who robbed convenience stores. She was a very beautiful woman and everyone knew it. As she walked down the street in her highly priced coat, brushing her hair aside with the flick of her hand, she walked into a protest. People, chanting the derogatory hymn, God Damn Our Queen, were marching around and noticed her in the distance - "There's a local hero!" - and they didn't lay a single hand on her head. "Damn it, what's going on," Nelenna uttered, rushing into a local cafe.
Excerpt from Nelenna Ghevas, Detective, Olyan Police Authority, to Mrs. Ghevas, Mother -
"These protests seem to be a frequent occurance these days in Olyan. It doesn't look like the Queen's going to get off the hook so easily......"

Not at all. A democratically elected leader is responsible to his or her constituents. He or she may be removed from office for much lesser cause than violating the constitution. And he or she most certainly can not overturn any rights entrenched in the constitution.
On the other hand, by definition, an absolute monarch is responsible to nobody.
Mr. Chang,
Are you acquainted with men such as Adolf Hitler who relied upon the will of the people to violate the constitution and make himself responsible to nobody? The leaders of democracies - what makes them who they are - depend on the circumstances in which they lead. For us, we see no reason to overturn centuries of monarchism. Our people have always been proud to support a monarchy which guarantees their rights. When you tell me that homosexuals have no rights, you mistake the homophobia of a few individuals for the beliefs of the entirety of our realm's citizens. Our Charter of Rights, created by previous monarchs, declares that all men and women, regardless of any distinction whatsoever shall be blessed with the basic human rights that we all take for granted.
Not all monarchs are the stereotypical pompous tyrants of movies and books. I am of a class of monarch which truly cares for the masses, a monarch who does not mind when free speech is used to criticize my policies, when the freedom to protest is used against my government, when the freedom of religion allows people to believe in things I cannot agree with, and so on. A constitution can be overturn by any individual regardless of government. If I were to see the rise of Democracy over Kageb and the rise of its first democratically elected leader into political control, what is to stop him from overthrowing the constitution in favor of personal rule? And what if the people reject democracy in favor of a continuation of absolute monarchy? Democracy - and any form of government - can never - nor should it - be forced on the people of any nation. If the people want monarchy, as surveys have surely told us, then that is what will happen. I hope, Mr. Chang, that our political differences will not lead to us being enemies. You and I share a common goal, after all.

Her Majesty,

I'm not suggesting that you introduce a bad democracy. I'm suggesting that you introduce a good one. I'll repeat it again - an absolute monarch is responsible to nobody, ever. In a good democracy, the government is responsible to the people and the people enforce its adherence to the constitution. Please stop ignoring that point.
When you tell me that homosexuals have no rights....
I didn't say any such thing. I said that the rights of homosexuals can not be guaranteed without a constitutional government. The rights of homosexuals in your nation are at the mercy of your whims. Even if you are reasonably benevolent with regard to those rights, you can not enforce - or even predict - what your successors will do.
Our Charter of Rights, created by previous monarchs, declares that all men and women, regardless of any distinction whatsoever shall be blessed with the basic human rights that we all take for granted.
If your monarchy is indeed absolute, then your Charter of Rights is worthless because it rests only on the whim of the monarch.
I am of a class of monarch which truly cares for the masses, a monarch who does not mind when free speech is used to criticize my policies, when the freedom to protest is used against my government, when the freedom of religion allows people to believe in things I cannot agree with, and so on.
Again and again and again, regardless of how personally benevolent you might be, you can not guarantee that your successors will be the same.
A constitution can be overturn by any individual regardless of government.
No it can not. If the people truly embrace their constitution, then any individual who violates it will be overthrown. The constitution will not.
If I were to see the rise of Democracy over Kageb and the rise of its first democratically elected leader into political control, what is to stop him from overthrowing the constitution in favor of personal rule?
The people.
And what if the people reject democracy in favor of a continuation of absolute monarchy?
If you think that scenario is plausible, why don't you give them the choice?
If the people want monarchy, as surveys have surely told us, then that is what will happen.
Instead of relying on surveys to tell you what you want to hear, why not ask the question democratically? If you're so sure that the people want you as their leader, why not give them the chance to elect you?
You and I share a common goal, after all.
I'm not convinced that we do. I want homosexuals to have the same rights that everybody else has - first and foremost, the right to choose their own government. It is only by choosing their own government that the people can control their own destinies. It is only by choosing their own government that the people can guarantee any rights for future generations of any group.

Kageb, I have a minor, open reply to your nation. I swear I'm not trying to foment rebellion! Also, House Venturini is a fairly minor Great House in my nation, so has little to do with the nation as a whole. Just so you know.
IC:
I wish to speak to the nation of Kageb, to the supporters and detractors of the queen.
Violent outburst is no way to ask for change. I have seen that my letter to the queen was leaked to the press, and I have seen the people who have rallied behind it, some with misunderstanding of my goal, others with a proper and just perspective. To those who would commit crimes of treason and homicide, I beg you stand down. You do not know me, but let it be enough that I am a person who feels strongly for you all despite having met none of you. No good could come of violence and it never does. We, humanity, should be a loving people.
That does not, however, diminish the concern I have that the queen has allowed herself to forget her duties to her people. It is, then, to her family, her aides, to every political individual in Kageb that I make this suggestion: request full disclosure of your queen, it is your right. Request that she face the charges against her openly, and answer for all criticisms. There is, deeply rooted in this, the dulling force of tyranny and I am sure that the queen does not wish for that -- so, let her take responsibility and not hide in the protection of her station.
You all deserve at least that much.

It is my sincere hope that you realize the error in which you have conducted yourself.
One may have called the Queendom's government something along the lines of a heart connected to all sorts of organs such as the nobility and the masses governed by the heart - the Crown - and the heart was in the flesh of the nation, the nation was like a human body and this was something brought up time and time again. Especially when it came to Duchess Bianca's letter to the Queen in which she had made an elegant point of this, whilst pretty much saying she didn't seem to like the lesbian Queen angle Kageb was taking. As her message was leaked to the public - subsequently to the Anti-Ravanites - the Queen decided to write to the Duchess to give her side of the situation but it was short - yet simple - due to the constraints of time placed upon the Queen.
"Duchess,
If I were to die without any children in my household, then there would be a member of my family such as one of my three siblings who would take control of the realm. I have never put sexual satisfaction ahead of the people over whom I reign. Just because I am openly lesbian, it does not mean I instantly become unable to lead my nation. I resent your claim that I am putting myself over the masses.
Signed,
Her Majesty,
Queen Ravana of Kageb"
Thus the letter was sent amidst an atmosphere saturated with hatred and contempt with the bliss of a civil union intermingling with the chaos, oh, that what you may have called a joyous occassion is now tainted with turmoil!

Your Majesty,
Thank you for replying. It is, quite simply, that I find within you a darkness you do not notice yourself. Of course, we may forgo all poetic manners of speech, and perhaps I should do that, if we are indeed now speaking on such a personal manner. You have lost your way. You have lost your way and you see things in a binary fashion. You expect that my criticism of your reign lies in the openness of your sexual orientation rather than addressing the very words which I wrote.
It is quite true that homosexuality does not instantly make you unable to lead your nation. It is not the fact that you are a lesbian which makes me doubt your capacity. As a member of a sexual minority, I am more than willing to speak on your behalf as far as that is concerned. The fact of the matter is quite simple: resent what you like, you are putting yourself above your people.
Right now, Kageb is bubbling and if it continues, may well reach a boiling point. And this is because you decided one day that you would forgo centuries of tradition and cause instability and turmoil, and marry a streetwalker because she satisfies you physically. How is this not selfish?
In the end, I do hope the best for you and your country. But I am disappointed that you do not see the consequences of your decisions and that you are unapologetic. A member of noble standing should know much better.
Of course, perhaps, this is why Santheres fought so hard to gain freedom from monarchial rule.

"Me?" Scarlet seemed shocked by the idea, "Appeal to the masses." She hesitating, looking from Espar to Ravanna, looking for support, "I...I wouldn't know what to say, I'd get all tongue-tied and I'd forget what I was trying to say. Besides, they all hate me anyway." Truth was, she would be so nervous about talking to such a hostile crowd face to face. However, she did have a definite answer to his other question,
"Yes, I love Ravanna for who she is, not because she's Queen. If she wants to stay as Queen then I want to stay with her."
He was a humble farmer of modest origin, of kindness of heart and humility of soul. For those who knew the farmer rather than had heard of him or the success of his crops had always known this of him. He sat on the steps of his house with a sigh, wondering and contemplating, examining nothingness with his cold eyes. He was given the name of Yani upon birth, Yani Loran being the fullness of his identity, and he raised a wife and two children in prime agrarian comfort. He lived on the outskirts of the nearest town and only visited it to sell surplus at the farmers' market but, on this particular afternoon, the town came to him. A boy on his bike was chucking out newspapers to the farmers and, when he came upon Mr. Loran's household, he smiled. He had a crush on the oldest daughter and Yani knew this, though he did not seem to mind it. "Good morning, Mr. Loran," the boy called to him.
Yani nodded his head as he waltzed over to pick up the bundled newspaper from the ground, only to find the headline being "Her Majesty Abdicates!," and that the boy was simply standing there as if he were wondering what Mr. Loran was going to do in reaction. Yani sighed. He shoved the newspaper under his arm and then threw some coins to the boy who smiled. "A tip for another honest day's work."
Yani waltzed inside his small house and took his seat at the table where his wife and two daughters were dining upon breakfast, his was still steaming hot from just being served from the pan. The Queen has abdicated, Yani told his family and they stayed silent, not knowing what to say of it. Weeks had passed, decisions were made and then, under the headline, read: "Prince Espar refuses to take throne!," which then put the invisible crown upon the third sibling's head.
Nymira was a very beautiful woman with the features of femininity that often a man desires such as the bust - perky breasts held up by a lavish brassiere -and the luscious auburn hair which was curled at the end, daintily touching her shoulders, her crystal eyes tantalizing the men and then there was a heart of coal and gold, depending on how she viewed you. As she sat at the mirror that hanged upon her desk, combing her hair with an elegant brush, a group of soldiers walked into the room. Nymira did not understand why this was happening at all but then she knew why - their reason - when they bowed and produced a man, a simple man, with a declaration. You, Nymira, are now Queen of Kageb effective following your coronation. Upon you are the wishes of the masses.
Nymira sharply turned her head and glared upon the men but then smiled at them, as if nothing had ever even happened. She rose from her seat and walked up to the man with a seductive look, a demure gaze, warm breath blown against the face. "Shall I be entrusted with power? Very well. Let us make our preparations."
Nymira walked down the hall with her posse behind her and then came into the room of the Princess Janata who was irritated, yet surprised, when Nymira had entered, being with her friends and all. Nymira didn't stay long, and all she said was: "You, for now, are my heir. Ravana has sworn away power and Espar has declared his voluntary disqualification from the throne until further notice."
And Janata stayed silent.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
It must be said that Espar did not say that he never in his life wanted to be a monarch but that he simply could not ascend to the throne at the moment, that he felt a desire to simply let Nymira reign, not giving clear answers to anyone who demanded them. It must be said that Ravana and Scarlet were in hiding amidst the cover of plains and nobility - Nymira already made plans to strengthen royal authority whilst making sure that the "Ravanite Question" would never raise its ugly head again. Nelenna Ghevas, while being tasked on a rape case, overheard from her friends at the salon how Nymira was to become the Queen of Kageb and Yani Loran, while flirting with his wife, had overheard it from a group of walking farmers.
The official date of the coronation of Nymira as the de jure and de facto Queen of the realm had not yet been made avaliable to the public - it was not known if one had even been set. Nymira, sitting on a train as it sped off in the darkness of night, was looking out the window while holding her head with her hand palm up upon her chin, leaning to touch the wall with shoulder and side, peering out to see faint outlines of nature. In her mind did visions of prosperity blossom, in her mind did she tell herself how she would continue the dynasty - directly descended from the Founder's seed! - and how she would make sure no future Ravanas ever emerged, for it must be said that Nymira was neutral on homosexuality but frowned upon the current situation as harmful to national stability - voicing support to the words of Bianca Venturini.
Nymira was wearing her august orange nightgown which accented her slender physique and which made her desirable even more among the men who stared. They always stared. She was the nymph of the Royal Court but behind the beauty was nothing but ruthlessness - a ruthless ambition to make sure Kageb was prosperous and strong-in-arms. She was single and young, fertile and considering, beautiful and intelligent, possessing a ruthless ambition to make Kageb great, to heal schisms and restore stability in the name of the common good. She breathed out a tad coarsely before hearing her aide-de-camp, Vara Klomas, standing at the door with a stoic look. Vara Klomas was originally someone who worked as a royal desk clerk, a secretary for the nobles-in-the court, until Nymira personally chose her to be her aide-de-camp and personal confidant. Vara was to Nymira what Emilia was to Desdemona. "Your Highness, do you need anything?"
Nymira smiled. "Nothing is needed but keep your ears open. There's no telling if I ever will need you to do something for me or not, Miss Klomas. We'll probably in Olyan soon, so that's when I'll most likely call upon you." Vara nodded. "It is a pleasure to work for you, even though I've really only just begun."
Vara then walked away into the darkness of the hallway while Nymira simply looked out the window again as the first lights of Olyan's one of several train stations could be seen emerging out of obscure distance. Nymira laughed. This was going to be fun.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Baron Soryana was awakened by the commotion produced by his wife when she recieved the information pertaining to her husband's new role in the post-Ravana queendom. According to what she had recieved from the messengers, her husband was to retain his position as Foreign Minister provided that he swear loyalty to Queen Nymira, for that's how she was now to be addressed, and she even had decided to appoint him as her temporary regent, her representative until the coronation had been dealt with. Viscount Lamin, in his own letter, was told that he could expect to keep his post under the oath-of-loyalty condition which he had no problem accepting.
Neither did the Baron Soryana, regent of Queen Nymira.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the arms of a man does a woman normally find comfort but when Esther Kaufman told herself this following some heated passion with Prince Espar - a man whose marriage to her had caused a lesser but still incredible schism - she could sense her discontent immediately being the product of his distress. She inched up to his face and sighed, pecking him on the cheek as their flesh intertwined, wondering why he was so distressed. Why did he have to mull over things?
A few days later in the month, Prince Espar pledged his utmost and unconditional loyalty to Queen Nymira in advance - he could no longer find the will to interfere in politics. He just wanted to get out of it for a while. After he had done this, he fled to a seaside resort with his wife and children but did make a plan to attend Nymira's coronation, whenever it was going to happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No one knows what happened to Ravana and Scarlet, at least the present narrative does not give us any indication that they've yet to emerge from their secret location. What we can say is that both desired nothing more than peace and quiet and the chance to live together without hatred. The abdication was finalized and so was Ravana's desire. If she could not reign with Scarlet alongside her then she would never reign at all.
When the soon-to-be Queen's train had pulled up right at the station, there had been quite the commotion as Princess Nymira had expected, and as she daintily walked out of the train in her elegant gown, one surely befitting a woman of her rank, the people who were gathered there immediately bowed and gave their support, as if she were already the Queen. Nymira smiled, while Vara followed as best as she could. A motorcade had been waiting for the duo - flanked by members of the Royal Guard - who began following as soon as it began to drive through the street. The people who looked upon the motorcade would stare and mumble amongst themselves about it. Nymira's presence in the capital seemed to be something pleasant, a load off their minds and a burden off their hearts.
While the motorcade drove through streets of Olyan, the Baron Soryana and other ministers of Ravana's government were waiting for their future monarch to meet them. It must be said that they were willing for the most part to serve the new Queen although some of those who served Ravana resigned for various reasons such as personal loyalties. Some believed that a lesbian Queen would not have been a problem and so they resigned. When the motorcade had finally arrived at the Palace, the Baron and other ministers greeted her and swore that they would continue to serve the Crown........
Prince Espar had - by then - already sent himself and his family to a seaside resort not only to give them a good time but to also get out of these political debates that were still raging all over the nation. As he sat around, examining the sunlight shine upon the water in the pool while his wife swam with their growing children, Espar thought to himself - until he recieved a letter from his sister in which the messenger explained that Espar had been invited to attend the coronation, to which he replied simply: "We'll be there."
It was to be a few days later that Kageb would have a new Queen, Nymira remembered, as she found herself in the bedroom formerly occupied by Ravana during her reign. Nymira grinned as she thought about all the things that had been done in this single room and then decided to stare out the window and look at the moon shining above them, congregations of stars encircling it. Nymira smiled while standing in her nightgown, Vara having left sometime ago to deal with some work, her crystal eyes examining her surroundings. "The spider weaved its web in the palace, yea, until it was squished."
Nymira laughed at her rendition of an old saying and then turned to her reflection in the massive mirror that stood in the room. She imagined herself as the Queen of Kageb - dressed in the regal robes and adorned with the Crown Jewels. That night, as invitations to attend the coronation were sent to people all across the world - especially to Bianca Venturini and others - Nymira began to feel a surge of happiness flow through her veins. What would she be like as Queen - this sultry and ruthless nymph of a lady?
