Piracy on the seas of Parilisa (OPEN MT)

PNS Speerspitze was further away from Parilisa than it had been for a long time. As one of the navy’s patrol vessels its main task was to crawl up and down the length of the coast in response to any emergencies. But earlier this week Captain Heer had received a message from his superiors commanding him to track a notorious pirate ship which for the past month had been raiding merchant ships as they came into the port of Exengrad; now he knew its location and was approaching with all speed.

The Bauernfänger Class patrol vessel cut a scar of surf through the cold grey surface of the sea. On board the 25 sailors were preparing themselves for a conflict with the enemy ship, loading up their G100 rifles and taking up position in their respective parts of the ship.

Slowly the pirate ship became visible on the horizon. Nobody was sure where it originated, but for too long it had been a constant menace to Parilisan trade. Larger than Speerspitze, Captain Heer could only pray that the pirates were less trained and worse armed than the Parilisans.

“Now then…” mumbled Heer, watching the pirates in the distance. “Now the moment of reckoning is here…now you will perish at the hands of the Parilisan fleet…”

The pirate ship was a converted private yacht, which was taken by the pirates in one of their earlier attacks. 3 inflatable assault boats were visiable on the upper deck. Diffrent weapons were mounted around the ship on wierd looking sponsons and improvised turrets.

"Yo boss," Yelled one of the pirates manning a 14.5mm machine gun turret, "The navy is after us!"

Non of the crew called Ron Leer captain, although he was the commander of the ship. Standing in the formerly lush bridge of the yacht he looked to where his henchman was pointing.

"Yes, looks like thier in for real. All of you lazy bastards go mann the weapons. We aint going down without a fight!"

The yacht turned towards the navy ship, and the name "Sea Crow" could be seen written in red as it turned. Men were running to the various weapons and athe jolly roger was hoisted over the mast. It was not really needed, but Leer thought it was really funny. What point is there in being a pirate if you don't have a sens of humour?

“They’ve got a bloody pirate flag!” laughed the Captain. “Honestly, these people must be insane. Action stations!”

The ship was suddenly a buzz of activity, with armed sailors rushing about the ship getting to their positions. Trained on the approaching foe, the powerful gun at the fore of the boat was an intimidating presence.

“Prepare missiles.” Commanded the Captain. “Prepare for combat at all stations.”

Still charging forward, the ship had now reached its full speed. A young officer stepped out onto the deck with a loudspeaker and began to address the pirates.

“This is PNS Speerspitze. We insist that you surrender yourselves for arrest. If you fail to do so we will consider you a danger to our security and take appropriate action.”

"Take the helm" Leer ordered one of his officers "And keep advancing. At long range with their missiles they will slaughter us all."

Leer picked up a microphone connected to the yachats speaker system.

"This is Captain Leer of the 'Sea Crow'. WE refuse to be boarded. If you try to board us we will fight. Why dont you just go away and we can all end this day peacefully?"
He was just trying to buy time. He wanted to get up and close to use all of his weapons at once.

OOC: Yeah sure.

“Stop your approach immediately and prepare to be boarded. If you do not comply with my commands we will attack. Our Exocet missiles are prepared, our troops are prepared, the helicopter is prepared, and the heavy guns are prepared. I warn you; if you do not halt your approach we will destroy you.” Shouted the messenger.

Below decks the captain was watching the approach carefully. He knew full well that if the enemy came within a certain distance of the ship he would launch his missiles immediately.

((OOC: Cheers.))

Morgan Sutza frowned. The pirates on their way to Parilisa were idiots, as one of his sources told him. They were flying a Jolly Roger, for God's sake! If they couldn't get a few ships under their control in Parilisa and a bit of heroin an sex slaves into the country, then if the cartel collapsed in Zunola, he would have nowhere to go except the torture chamber...

Morgan decided he would have to send another pirate group to Parilisa, hopefully not as idiotic as the current ones. He could do an oil tanker thing again, hopefully either have it explode or far too much heroin and sex slaves arriving in Parilisa.

* * *

"Sansu!" screamed a messenger of Sutza to the leader of one the pirate groups. "Morgan told me that you and your group should start sailing to Parilisa!

"Why?"

"The current group there is flying the Jolly Roger."

"Right," nodded Sansu on his ship. "How long will it take?"

"Dunno!"

(OOC; Your call, Parilisa. They can arrive now and do a small roleplay over it or we can wait a few weeks...))

Or we can assume your pirates are just random pirates with no connection to Sutza and I have another pirate vessel in Parilisa which flew the Jolly Roger for aforementioned reasons...))

The massive oil tanker arrived in Parilisan waters, swarming through its waters controlled by ten pirates armed with nothing more but Kalishnokovs. They, like all the pirate gangs from Zunola, that some foreign ships would shoot at oil tankers, but just in case they were defeaten by some special forces, they had planted a small but deadly bomb on the ship, which, if it was wired, would result in nearly a million of barrels of oil being spilt on Parilisan waters, creating an enviromental disaster. If they succeeded, however, then more heroin and sex slaves would arrive in Parilisa than one country needed.

There was one man in the room the bomb was placed in, and if anybody boarded this ship, he would wire up the bomb.

For now, the ten pirates were hiding like cowards, hoping to be untouched by the Parilisan vessels...

"We oil tanker from Africa. We bring oil to country. We agreement with government. May enter country? I do not speak language good."

“Look this is a designated area for…” The Captain reconsidered his words. “I think you should turn back. Big fight. Danger. Danger. Go back. Tell me your name and go back!”

Heer realised that if the tanker got in the way and one of the missiles aimed for the pirate ship went towards it, the blast of oil could destroy everything. He needed to make sure the ship did not come any closer and he was going to need help. Quickly and efficiently he got in touch with his commanders at the Admiralty Board.

“Sir, this is Speerspitze, I need help in the pirate crisis. Can you send me sub back up? This is a potential disaster waiting to happen…”

Sansu was confused by the man's words, but the words after his pause revealed it all to him. Time to play difficult.

"Sir, we orders from government sail to near place. Near place need oil and give oil to wider country. We have sail through big fight to get near place to give oil to near place and other country. My name Sansu Jerlan."

Sansu could actually speak English very fluently, but it was easier to play dumb than play intelligent. Not that films glorified that fact.

Sansu could make out a helicopter being prepared for 'take off' in the distance. This was brilliant. This naval officer was falling straight for the Cartel's trap, the idiot. He was even getting angry and repeating his words, as if he thought Sansu was an idiot. How could somebody who singlehandly took over a well defended oil tanker with only a Kalishnokov and his own intellect be an idiot?

"Sir, we not turn round."

The bomb was ticking. The messenger had said it would take three minutes to explode, though there was no 'timer' or any sort on it. It could explode in thirty seconds or ten minutes, who knew?

Just like the Sutfen to wander into trouble. A single gout of coal smoke could be seen on the horizon nearby. It was heading for a port in Parilisa, like most Sutfen ships this one was a tramp freighter. It took cargo from anyone, towards any port.

The sutfen freighter looked like a slow, wallowing, target for piracy. Infact, it looked like a freighter that would be just perfect for a Pirate to take hostage to stop the navy from hitting them.

One of the lookouts waved and pointed towards the many ships nearby. The captain sighed, "Telegraph from the lookout says that there's a Naval ship and a Pirate ship battling it out up ahead. Think we should go around?"

"It'll either be finished or they'll need help by the time we get there. I say we head in, the real question is, should we unbutton?" Mumbled the second in command, who was currently at the helm.

"No, stay buttoned up, stay on course aswell. I'll go about seeing the crew gets to their business." Mumbled the captain.

The steamer continued on it's course, apparantly unable to see the pirates up ahead. However, the crew continued about their duties, with the exception of a number of crewmembers who stayed hidden among the others. Preparing the ship for something.

The helicopter was in the air now, and moving across the water towards the oil tanker. The crew of five, armed with assault rifles and Diablo pistols, would either demand a surrender or seize the vessel. It needed to be steered away from the conflict zone. Mounted in the side sat a soldier with an M60 machine gun prepared to open fire on any opposition on the deck of the tanker.

S-5698, WHS Unity

Deep below the developing incident was the WHS Unity an Oscar-2 Class SSGN. They had been stationed off the Parilisan coast ever since the Parilisa International Incident, running on minimal power to avoid detection, using there passive sonar to keep tabs on the developing situation above them. Up until this point there journey had been quite un-eventful with the only matter of note being a close call when a torpedo had armed itself for some unknown reason in one of the torpedo tubes, that un-eventful journey was about to change.

Captain Clancy, Captain of the WHS Unity strode into the red lit CIC. He had been awoken from his daily nap by a call from his XO due to a developing situation. "Captain on deck!"

Addressing his XO after taking a small sip of coffee "So why have I been woken up? I was enjoying my nap"

Smirking his XO walked over to the sonar station, Clancy following him. "It appears Captain that we have a developing situation between some Parilisan patrol vessels, another small vessel we guess to be a pirate and a large vessel that we have identified as a oil tanker"

"We pick them up as we came up from the thermocline layer?"

"Yeah, what should we do? Drop below the layer, it is particularly effective here, I doubt passive sonar can penetrate it."

Clancy stood thinking for a second, however a sonar operator called out before he could respond. "Sonar contact! Several kilometres out, Bearing 306 ° 52 ' 5.37 '' , Identified as Sutufinai freighter"

Clancy made his mind up with the last bit of information "Well that's decided, we will remain above the layer. Lets see how this plays out. Oh and XO....make sure the forward tubes are loaded"

PNS Unstoppable, a powerful Parilisan submarine, was the first of the backup squadron to arrive at the scene. At 111.7 metres long the Todlich Class submarine was large, but it was small compared to the two Oktober Class subs approaching slowly behind. Within 15 minutes they would join Unstoppable in the arena.

For a moment the Captain of Unstoppable was sure he saw something submarine like flash on the radar screen, but as quickly as it came it vanished and she managed to persuade herself that it was her eyes playing tricks on her. "Sansu, you told me to wire it three minutes it ago, and-"

Sansu shot the bomb wirer twice in the head. At the moment the second bullet penetrated his head, the bomb exploded, creating a gaping hole in the oil tanker, causing crude oil to spill onto the Parilisan sea, nearly a million barrels swarming onto it. This was clearly a natural disaster. Also in the blast was much heroin and dead sex slaves, most of them females though a few males found themselves among them. The pirates were also there, dead like the rest of them. God knew what the Parilisans would do whenever they traced all of it to Zunola.

"Send five of our best pirates to Parilisa, get them a goddamned frigate or a patrol boat from the old Navy. Go, now! I want a session with Kua!"

Three stolen pirate-controlled frigates and two patrol boats crossed into Parilisan waters. They had simple orders, radio silence and sink as many Parilisan ships as they could. Most of the pirates on the ships were former sailors in the Navy, but had turned to piracy for a living. It was a suicide mission either way, but they had been trained to not question orders.

The leading ship was a frigate. It was sailing contently, and had a Parilisan patrol boat in range now. The captain ordered his crew to fire them, and they did. They fired two missiles at the Parilisan patrol boat. The missile was approaching the patrol boat rapidly.

As burning fuel spread across the surface of the water the patrol boat had to turn away from pursuing the Sea Crow to avoid the blaze. As he turned he spotted the new ships; this was quickly turning into an action packed disaster.

The missile from the newcomer tore through the side of the Speerspitze with a crack and a blast. Water was pouring through the penetration in the metal hull as the second bomb pierced another hole below the waterline. The damage was devastating and Heer realised that in a few moments the ship would be underwater and he would be dead.

And the intervention team started to intercept the Sea Crow.

"Multiple sonar contacts! We have got ships coming from left right and centre, multiple foreign battlegroups are approaching! " Called out one of the sonar operators as they dealt with the large number of contacts coming in.

"Looks like the tanker just exploded! Launch transients, we got missile being launched from pirate vessels!" Yet another one called out." That explosion has knocked our passive arrays out for a bit, were blind"

Captain Clancy jumped into action, he knew the dangers posed to his vessel. "All ahead flank speed! Get us out of the way of that wreckage! Begin raising depth to periscope depth! Blow the ballasts!" The CIC crew began following his orders out with a real sense of urgency.

"All ahead flank!"

"Ballasts blown! Depth increasing! Periscope depth in one minute!"

Clancy took his position up by the periscope. "Lets hope that explosion masked the noise we are making"

Heer almost screamed as the side of the oil tanker was blown away in a flash of oil and dead women.

“Submarine backup! Submarine backup! Speerspitze down, I need an immediate attack on incoming pirate vessels, I need somebody to sink Sea Crow and I need you to get a report on the environmental damage to the government. Now for gods sake hurry up and take down those ships.”

One of the frigates stolen from the Navy before the collapse of the government was specialised for anti-submarine warfare, and they had several anti-submarine torpedoes/missiles on their ship. Whenever they picked up the submarines, they were given instant orders to fire their torpedoes at the submarines quickly.

They fired the torpedoes soon after. They headed straight towards the submarines, approaching them at a rapid speed.

Just after they fired the torpedo, the vessel blew up, along with both the patrol boats. They left merely two frigates, one of them anti-submarine. It was a suicide mission. Hopefully the Parilisans would track the Cartel to be behind it. If they did, then, well...

The F-35Cs fired a total of 16 Harpoon anti-ship missiles at the pirate frigates. If that wasn't enough, the F-35Cs were armed with two 1,000lb JDAMs each and a 20mm cannon, both of which could do massive damage to such vessels.

As a comedy of errors, as the Wolf Hold Sub came up to Periscope depth... The periscope popped up and as it swiveled around, it would find the bow of the Sutfen steamer bearing down on it... Even if the Periscope dropped (As most sub crews would do.) the Periscope, and possibly the snorkel, would be struck by the Sutfen freighter.

Prior to this, the Sutfen had been watching the going-ons and had been remarking back and fourth to one another... The main discussion while watching the missiles lance back and fourth however, was; "Think we're out of our depth with this battle?" It was true that despite the amount of Trampers on the seas, very few had ever engaged in active combat. In fact, this tramper here would probably be the first to ever to engage in combat. If however, it could get it's slow ass into that said combat.

The missile annihilated the front of the Leistungi manufactured submarine and the security watertight doors inside began to shut to stop the flow of incoming liquid. Whilst this meant that casualties were minimalised and the boat was still not beyond rescue, it ruined the operation of the submarine.

But this was meaningless, as two new submarines cut through the water towards the approaching pirates. Oktober Class Ballistic vessels, the missiles on these huge subs would absolutely shatter the Zunolans once the Parilisans were completely in range.

"Periscope depth!" Cried out one of the seamen who was standing over the depth counter. "Scope up!" Clancy rotated the scope, almost as it did its full 360 degree turn there was an almighty shearing sound. Clancy looked over at the periscope status screen and saw red lights all over the board. Cursing aloud he replayed the tape. "He made out the smoking wreck of the tanker, several foreign battlegroups and ongoing battle with the pirates and then just a ships keel. It was obvious that something had collided with the periscope.

"What was that?" Clancy called out in anger.

His XO, Commander Morris responded with a rather worried look on hi face "Sutufinai freighter sir! Also it appears that the Parilisan had directed some subs towards us."

Clancy's face gained the same look of concern "You are taking the piss! How did we not pick them up?"

"Explosion must of masked there signatures sir! What should we do?"

"Raise the comms array, immediate secure flash to SUBFLTCOM!" Clancy practically threw himself over to the comms desk and hit the raise array button. His fingers moving like lightning over the keyboard, using a pre-set template he typed out the following message.

Slamming the send button, Clancy then resumed his position at the centre of the CIC "Message away! No for the sake of Larka get us below the layer! Emergency dive! Engines to full! Get us the fuck out of this hell hole!"

The crew yet again quickly followed out his orders as the WHS Unity went to a steep dive at full speed, its reactor running to full. Heading for the thermocline layer which should break any sonar locks on the submarine.

The Sutfen freighter jerked to one side as it ran into something. The sub's periscope ripping a gash in the freighter's hull. As the freighter began taking on water, crewmembers tried their best to seal the hole in the freighter's bow from the inside. As light as the freighter was however, the 8,000 tons of refined steel was pulling her down and making the water come in stronger than they could stop it. As the water-tight door was closed... Four Sutfen seamen were drowned. Wireless telegraph began sending out an S.O.S. while the Sutfen radio crackled to life and the radioman began calling out an SOS.

High above the Sutfen freighter a brilliant red flare was shot up into the sky followed by red emergency rockets. It was simple, the collision was causing the Sutfen freighter to go down.

The HMS Elissa (pennant C47), leading vessel of Battlegroup Timaeus, led the formation through Parilisan waters. The Battlegroup had been on ODECON-based operations for some time now, what had been designated the "Airport Incident" had rattled the Parilisans no end. Pounding through the waves, her regular patrol had turned warm rather quickly.

"Staines!"
"Aye Captain?"
"Make full ahead, hydrophones are relaying heading 167."
"Aye Captain. Helmsmen, full ahead, bearing 167!"
"'Sir!"
"Staines, I want the ship on yellow, man stations and prepare for combat. Comms has received reports of piratical activity at 167, and we're moving in to aid the activities. The Royal Observation Corps suggests there may be other activity in the area, so I want full passive searching by all parties, frigates up front of the formation. Give the Operations Command Room a shout, tell them to put a boot up it, too."
"Aye sir. Seaman, prepare yellow alert, combat stations!"

The formation began their turn, a practised manoeuvre and made way toward the conflict zone. The 3 Spitzen Class Frigates moved forward of the cruiser, the pings of the leader heard clearly across the acoustics of all the vessels.

"Captain, sir?"
"Yes Staines, what is it?" The captain was stood above the bridge, normally only accessible to maintenance crews. It was his usual haunt before a battle, where he would, wherever possible, survey his battleground.
"Sir, the Parilisan Navy has reported a surfacing unknown submarine, on our heading."
"Excellent. Ready ASROCs, and get an ROC Officer onto a Fuchs and have two move to observe the situation. Get the helmsmen to hold our position 10 kilometres from the activity."
"Aye sir, right away."

The aircraft director made his final hand signals as the Lynx lifted off the deck. Swinging away, it made a beeline for the now quickly-departing Fuchs class Frigates, it's sole cargo being a specialist ROC Officer. Well-versed in class recognition and wartime communications, his skills would undoubtedly come in useful in the situation unfolding less than 5 miles in front of the ship.

The frigate observed the tower of the Holdian submarine disappearing below the waves, active sonar pinging it as it made it's way down to the thermocline layer. It's captain, one John Thompson, was quick to the mark.

"Weapons Officer, prepare ASROCs. Radio, relay situation back to the Todlich submarines, have them prepare to dive and remove the threat."

Immediately deploying the Lynx helicopter with it's dipping sonar, he immediately set about projecting the path of the vessel.

"International incidents be damned, that cheeky blighter will not make it away from the Royal Navy!"

The other frigate captain, however, was observing the spectacle in front of him.

"All men to stations, we have a sinking freighter. Hail and offer assistance!"

Below deck, 65 marines began pulling on their uniform, ranging from combat overalls to frogmen's suits. They were soon aboard deck, equipment ready to commit to emergency engineering work.

"Sutfel Freighter, you have sustained damage. This is the HMS Islington, offering assistance. We have necessary equipment and reinforcements to arrange a more full repair at sea."

Desperately listening in on his sonar set, not daring to use the active sonar to discover what was actually up there, however after careful consideration they had some details. "I think based on the screw count, we have got two Oktober Class Ballistic Subs and an unknown amount of Todlich submarines"

The CIC became deadly quite as soon as the words active sonar were heard. "How long to the layer?" He called out his voice barley a whisper.

His XOs voice at the same volume level" Passing through layer now......were through the layer"

"Cut engines to minimum, lets see if we can sneak out of here, begin zigzagging to point Alpha-3-Bravo."

"Engines to minimum, beginning manuveres" The silence encompassed the whole submarine as they began to try an creep out of the combat zone.

The Sutfen freighter had begun to list even as the radio call came in as a reply. Sutfen were lowering the two boats the steamer had, but one of the two boats never made it to the water as it was rendered useless by the ship's list.

The other made it to the water and Sutfen began piling into it. The radio operate called out, "Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. However, We are taking on water faster than you can arrive. We are abandoning ship and if you can assist survi-" His voice was cut off when the freezing cold water hit the red hot boilers of the evacuated boiler room...

The steamer shuddered as the steam explosion fractured the boiler and caused an even greater steam explosion. The boilers exploded and blew a gaping maw of a hole out of the upward side of the ship's hull. As luck would have had it, it blew apart the unusable lifeboat. However the explosion also caused the upper deck, and superstructure of the tramp freighter to blow apart in a shower of steam, smoke, and wood. Somewhere in it was the bridge crew, radio operator, and anyone else left aboard the ship.

The blast wave could easily be heard below the water, why?

The freighter had been a "Q-ship". It had moved into the area to assist in fighting the pirates. When the fire from the destroyed firebox hit the ammunition, ti began cooking off. As luck would have it, it also began damaging the timers on the many depth-charges aboard the Q-ship, which fell into the sea and exploded soon thereafter.

These depth chargers would cause hell with submarines, if anything for their sonar. 5 inch gun ammunition began cooking off, and subsequently exploding... .50 caliber ammunition, both tracer and non-tracer began going of with loud cracks...

The Sutfen were desperately trying to get out of the area around the sinking freighter... But there were many wounded and it would seem shrapnel had damaged the lifeboat and wounded a number of the crew.

((OOC: You do know you wouldn't be able to identify it as a Wolf Hold sub, just as an Oscar-2 SSGN))

OOC: Fully aware, but it'd limit it down to a number of nations so our intelligence forces could go about their work.

"Blast, they're through the layer. Radio in to the Elissa, get the Type 23's to deploy the TAS systems out. We'll see if we can't catch these blighters yet."

From the stationary battlegroup now holding position some 10km away, two Type 23 Frigates broke from formation and immediately made for the projected location of the submarine. With the Lynx helicopters now dropping sonobuoys, the net would soon be closing around the escaping submarine. Running silent would limit her speed, her weapons rendered useless by the need to remain hidden - and with sonobuoys being deployed further out to hem her in she would be lucky to make her escape. The Type 23 Frigates were now actively searching the area, the ping a steady regular rhythm against the silence in the submarine.

Aboard the Islington, the marines watched in horror as the ship broke upon, a great vent of steam billowing into the air.

"Shit! Get the Merlins up, see if we can salvage some of those men. Relay the information to the Panoptes."
"Aye captain, I'll relay the information to the hangar."
"Marines! Prepare your vessels for rescue operations, let's move!"

The vessels had almost hit the water when the ordnance began going off. The cries of men hit by exploding shells was horrific, and the Marines could do nothing but wait. It was not long, however, before the first Merlin was in the air. Two marines leant from her rear ramp as the pilot held her barely above the waterline. Makeshift tethers allowed them to lean near-horizontal as they began hauling men aboard the helicopter. Soon joined by the other, all flying regulations disappeared as they flew close, each with it's Marine loadmasters taking on precious, often wounded cargo.

((OOC: Good point, but are you really going to fire without clear identification()

"Weak pings still sir, I don't think they are giving or location away though" The sonar operators continued to monitor the situation straining to hear any trace of a torpedo or sonar buoy. Meanwhile Clancy and Commander Tomlinson were working over a map spread out over the central console of the CIC.

Tomlinson was tracing the line of some deep sea ravine but the both ruled that out as the risks were to great, yet it might make some kind of last resort. Standing up straight and rolling his shoulders Clancy looked over at Tomlinson who was fetching another map. "What would you be doing if you were the surface commander?"

Flattening the next map out on the table, Tomlinsons voice was but a whisper " Try my active dipping and towed array sonar’s, set up sonar buoy nets and try and slowly encircle us."

"Dead on what I was thinking, I really don't see a way out of this one" Looking back over the map the next call out from the sonar operators gave Clancy a ray of hope.

"Contacts, looks like we have multiple explosions in the water, possibly ammunition leaking from a cargo hold of a ship.....we have a large explosion, sonar is useless"

Clancy knew this was his only chance, whilst the hostile sonar was occupied he had to try and get out of there enclosing net as fast as he could. "Dive as deep as we can, run the bottom! Engines to 70%, lets get some speed people, weapons launch a noise maker in a 30 degree direction from our current heading!"

The crew all knew this was there only chance, so even without acknowledgement of his orders, the WHS Unity began to speed up. "Engines at 70%"

"Noise maker is ready! Should we fire?" The weapons chief had the phone in one hand pressed to the side of his head just waiting for the order.

Clancy just gave a brief nod and the weapons chief said one word down the phone "Fire" and with that Clancy’s bid to escape began. The noise maker shot off from the submarine in the direction of the open sea, hopefully it was going to draw the attention of the hostile ASW ships. Then under the sonar black our effect of the exploding ship and munitions of the Sutufinai the WHS Unity began making for further down the Parilisan coast.

He had no desire for a pell-mell battle so close to Parilisa, but he knew that if they could not drive away their opposition Parilisan merchant vessels would remain unsafe in these dangerous seas.

“This is PNS Illustrious to lead ship Adenian fleet. We need identification of the hostile submarine, Unstoppable is in pursuit right now.”

[SIZE="1"]OOC: Unstoppable is actually pursuing the sound device fired by TWH.

OOC: 'kay. And yes, TWH, when an unannounced ballistic missile submarine appears off your coast and you've not been informed by an ally, it can only be one thing. DESTROYED D:<

"This is the Elissa. We'll patch you through to the observer, he'll have more information on the subject."

A brief buzzing was heard, before another man picked up.

"This is Lieutenant Harwell, Royal Observation Corps. From what I could see and the hydrophonics operator's brief, we've got an Oscar-II class ballistics submarine. One of the older russian models, used by every tinpot nation from here to Doomingsland. Too many operators to be sure of who owns it, and it's a swift thing too. 28 knots all out, but in this situation it'll be forced to run silent. What rudimentary tactics I possess would suggest that that's too easy a detection, Captain. I would advise caution. If you will accept them, I can confirm that the Admiral aboard the Elissa will dispatch two Todlich class submarines to aid the chase."

The Admiral aboard the Elissa, however, had already dispatched the pair, half of the four-submarine complement which had been skimming the surface for the past five minutes. The other two had remained where they were, although strain on the crew meant they were limited for how long they could maintain their position. The apparent submarine on the acoustics seemed too easy, almost an admission of defeat. If nothing else it jammed the frequency until it was out of range, which he suspected was it's purpose in the first place. He had made a request to the Admiralty Board to contact their counterparts in Parilisa, requesting maritime patrol aircraft to begin dropping sonobuoys further out than his own complement of aircraft could manage, although they were managing well. Every minute's delay would mean a harder search.

"This is the Elissa to the Perceptive and the Judicious. Make your way along this bearing, full ahead and below the layer. I've reason to believe he's still about. When you reach these co-ordinates deploy your towed arrays, active search. We'll have him yet."

The affirmative came immediately, and the two submarines were soon searching for their prey.

“You think the Unstoppable is chasing a fake, Lieutenant? I suppose that’s a possibility, but I can see no harm in letting her chase it to make sure.”

The Admiralty acted quickly, calling on assistance from the Air Force’s F-17AL Arrowhawk’s to drop sonobuoys in strategic positions along the length of the coast. The organised military of Parilisa were doing their duty, arranging everything almost perfectly. While the aircraft scoured the sea in search of the submarine, a large fleet was deployed from the port of Exengrad. More submarines, frigates and destroyers would soon be on their way to join in the hunt for the rogue underwater vessel.

Meanwhile more sonobuoys were being distributed by a handful of ocean patrol vessels. In harmony with the skilled fleet of Brittannica Adenia, the net was quickly tightening around the shadow submarine.

((OOC: You have a really good point there, oh well:D))

A sonar operator was clearly straining his ears to try and listen to something over the passive arrays, "Sir! It appears that those Parilisan subs have fallen for the trick, they are heading out to international waters. They have fallen for it!" A small whisper went round the room as most of the crew made some sound of satisfaction or joy. Clancy still looked grim, he hadn't been particularly worried about the Parilisan subs. It was the other fleet which seemed to have quite a bit of ASW capabilities.

Clancy walked over to the sonar station and looked over the operators shoulders "What about the other fleet and the sonar buoy net?"

"I think we have cleared them, we are though the sonar buoy net and we are gaining distance from them. Ss far I am not picking up any sonar contacts in between us and our current heading, however I would advise we keep engines at 70% so not to push are luck" Replied the chief operator, the sweat from the last few minutes clearly visible.

Patting the man on the back, Clancy gave a sigh of relief. "Good work Chief, call me if you get anything and I mean anything, if a whale farts, I want to know about it" Leaving the sonar crew with clear grins on their faces, Clancy walked back into the CIC. "Engines to remain at 70%, keep the crew down from general quarters but let them go to the mess in shifts" Commander Tomlinson nodded and sent the announcement to all the departments via the ships phone.

"Weapon crews are first off sir."

With a nod Clancy turned back to the map, "Very good"

10-15 Minutes later

Tomlinson had left the CIC with about half of the CIC staff to go to eat. Clancy was clasping a cup of steaming coffee as he began filling out an AAR for Naval Submarine Command. He thought the current engagement was over, however he had thought to soon as the voice of the young sonar operator cut through the CIC, it was full of panic. "Sonar contact! Two towed arrays on active to starboard and port! We have more sonar buoys both active and passive! Also picking up hull signatures, two possible fleets! Unknown size!" The CIC crew were frozen in horror but for only a moment or two. Clancy jumped up and hit the alarm button on the central console and picked up the ships phone.

"General quarters! General quarters! Active sonar and multiple sonar contacts, all hands to general quarters! Engines to 20%, immediate dive, run the bottom!"

The sun began to bank towards the bottom of the ocean as they tried to evade the latest set of contacts.

((OOC: You do know you wouldn't be able to identify it as a Wolf Hold sub, just as an Oscar-2 SSGN))

OOC: Just for the record, this isn't necessarily true -- if you've replaced the aged reactor and props on the Oscar-2 with more modern ones manufactured in the Wolf Hold, BA would be able to identify the frequency as one unique to Wolf Hold submarines. If you haven't, obviously, you're quite right, but since I think you use western equipment (?), I would imagine the eastern-bloc propulsion system would have been replaced.

If no one objects, I'm going to have a submarine of my own operating nearby. Basically just so that I can say "transient" and "ping" a lot, honestly, but if anyone objects to the RP getting a little off-topic, I'll just go on my way.

Her Majesty's Submarine Perceptive, Todlich Class SSN, S28

"Captain, hydrophonics reports engine noise ahead of us!"

The captain smiled. Almost exactly where she was expected to be. Their prey had panicked, a rabbit in headlights.

"Ready tubes 1 and 2, load Spearfish."
"Aye cap'n. Load Spearfish, tubes 1 and 2!" The shout echoed through the bridge as the lights dimmed and the submarine began to slow.
"Weapons officer, you know what to do."
"Aye sir. We have a lock, they're diving."
"Continue."
"Fire program uploaded. Equalised. Muzzle opening. Permission to fire?"
"Do it."

The water rams engaged, forcing the two Spearfish Torpedoes into the ocean. Propellers engaged, they began their journey to the submarine at an impressive 80 knots. Less than 2 kilometres away, the HMS Judicious made the same manoeuvre, in a well-versed technique. They each banked gently away, as the tubes were purged in anticipation of another salvo. Though the enemy would undoubtedly know where they were, if it came to it, they could be as quiet as any other submarine - just as quick to vanish as their prey.

Her Majesty's Ship Kettering, Fuchs Class Frigate, F37

The Lieutenant had been liaising with the hydrophonics crewmen aboard the ship, and had come up with an...interesting discovery. He had insisted upon being put through to Captain Dexter, eventually being able to relay the news.

"Captain Dexter, I have some rather...interesting news. I have further researched the origin of the Oscar-II submarine we're chasing, and it appears to originate from the Wolf Hold. Propellers and reactor stats match out."

“The Wolf Hold?” exclaimed Dexter. “They have subs on our coast? First they attack our airport, now they crawl around our sea…”

He knew that the consequences of this could be terrible. For the past week or so Parilisa had been nervous about relations with the country following the embarrassing fiasco at Prezdorf Airport. The incident had ended with Marshall Cain of the Wolf Hold forcibly removed from the state as a persona non grata.

“I’ll have to contact the Admiralty immediately. Do you have her pinned down?”

The Illustrious sped towards the area where the Adenian submarines had caught up with the illusive foreigner.

A Parilisan fleet under the command of Admiral Amherst will be arriving shortly. This enemy submarine must be destroyed.”

Dexter had sent a young Lieutenant, Yule, to contact the Admiralty, and he did so as quickly as he could.

“Lieutenant Yule, PNS Illustrious to Office of Admiralty.”
“Go ahead Illustrious, Admiralty receiving.”
“Allied ships have confirmed the discovery of the hostile submarine. But there’s something you should know…”

Yule paused; what if the Adenians had it wrong, what if they weren’t Holdian after all? This would cause anarchy, and there was still a spark of doubt in his perceptive mind.

“Illustrious?”
“Sorry, sir. I have to tell you that an Adenian expert has suggested that the submarine is from The Wolf Hold.”
“The Wolf Hold?”
“Affirmative.”
“Thank-you Illustrious. Do your duty.”

"Transients! Fish in the water! Fish in the water! We got two hostile Todlich Class SSNs" Cried out the sonar chief who had retaken his place at the sonar station. Clancy had been afraid of this, they had fired and now he had a potential international incident on his hands, quite possibly a tipping point as well. Resolving himself he decided his men’s lives were more important then any political relations.

"Do they have a lock on us?"

"I believe so captain!"

"Engines to full, hard to port, continue dive! Weapons fire of torpedoes on converging vectors, shoot down those torpedoes! You are cleared to fire at will! Navigation find me a deep sea channel, find me anything that can help us escape this nightmare"

The weapons chief was already on the phone to his department. "Yes captain, swordfish in tubes 1 and 2 loaded......tubes doors open. Tubes 1 and 2 launch! Tubes 3 and 4 loaded.....doors open....launch!"

"Okay load tube 1 and 2 with more swordfish load noise makers into tubes 3 and 4 with noisemakers" The weapons chief nodded and relayed the orders. Meanwhile outside the sub the torpedoes were set for collision courses for the hostile torpedoes, whilst the Unity tired to lose the torpedoes lock.

"Damn. Load 3 through 6, officer, same load."
"Aye skipper, 3 through 6!"
"When you will, officer."
"Aye sir. Equilibrium, muzzle, firing. Fish away, sir!"

Four more Spearfish, wire guided on a specific course around the anti-torpedo weapons and above the enemy submarine this time before their acoustic homing would be activated, were dispatched. The Perceptive's crew could smell the kill.

The Judicious, however, lost her lock as the Unity found her way down and to port. The cursing could almost be heard in the Perceptive as the captain issued immediate instructions to "hunt that damned bastard submarine."

The torpedoes registered their location and began acoustic searching, finding nothing but the noise maker. The first to reach it obliterated it, leaving the other three to presume search patterns. The next launch would alert them to the submarine's position, and would spell the end of her.

On the Perception, however, movement was afoot. Active searching was still underway, and the with the sudden "disappearance" of the Unity, it could mean only one thing - a deep sea channel.

"Presume search patterns helmsman, she can't have gone far. The Judicious will no doubt mirror us."

They began their movements, zig-zagging through the sea, as the Unity cruised quietly below. The next move was theirs, but their time was running out.

"I think we have lost those torpedo locks, I have three fish on what appear to be search patterns! No further transients, it appears that the two Todlich Classes are searching for us, I got active pings all over my scope"

"Thank you chief, lets hope it stays that way. Navigation how are we going with this deep sea channel?" The set of navigators clustered around a navigation screen. They were drawing lines on the map with red marker, mapping possible routes out to sea. They seemed to reach some general consensus, and in the end one line was left on the screen

"That’s are way out Cap'n, we follow that line out to sea, it zig-zags quite a bit, but we should be able to navigate it. It already seems to have given us respite from those torpedoes" Clancy relaxed a bit more now he knew they had a way out into the open sea. Once there he could easily evade the submarines and he also would probably stumble across a fleet friendly to The Wolf Hold.

"Okay lets make this as quiet as we can, engines to 30%, keep dive planes steady, weapons reload the noise maker just in case"

The chorus of "Aye Cap'n went up as the CIC crew went about there appointed tasks.

WHS Fire & Steel, Typhoon Class SSBN, Wolfpack 054-1

The towers of the eight Typhoon class submarines were clearly visible in a wedge formation in front of the Nachemere fleet. The lead submarine, the WHS Fire & Steel, was the flagship and the only submarine to have people on the observation deck. Wolf's Admiral Keating observed the Nachmere surface fleet behind him, he was silent as a courier passed him a message which had been sent to the Nachmere carrier group. A veteran of three decades of submarine and surface warfare, Wolf's Admiral Keating had never given up on a submarine or ship for that matter and he didn’t intend to start today.

"Tell Admiral Fox that he is to keep advancing and to stall those pesky ODECON ships, I know the unity is around here and we will find her" A Naval rating snapped a salute and hurried of into the submarine to send the message. As the rest of the command crew climbed down the ladder, Keating took one final last look at the open sea and then closed the hatch above him.

A few minutes later he arrived in the CIC absent of the coat and gloves he had been wearing on the observation deck. Returning the CIC crews salute he let them get on with there tasks. Walking up behind the communication officer "Connect me to the pack" The comms officer just hit two switches and nodded. "Thank you" Walking over to the central console he picked up the communications hand set. "This is the Flag to all ships, begin pre-planned dive and manoeuvre, activate active sonar, four ping break, Flag out!"

On the surface the towers of the eight subs disappeared under the grey surface of the sea as the dived to the pre planned depth and activated there active sonar, using it in four ping burst, it was a signal to the Unity. A signal telling them there were friendly forces out there.

"Tell all Captains to prepare for battle. I want them to all be aviable for a confrence call in 10 minutes. In the mean time the CTF will continue its current advance. And most impotently I want some of planes in the air. ASW and Fighters. That will be all"

20 minutes later the Captains were already done talking to the CTF Commander. All of the CTF was at ful alert. Missiles were ready to launch, Infact targets have been selected. ASW helicopters were looking for prey behind, infront and on the side of the group. More importatntly at high altitude 6 INF-2000N were giving the group air cover.

"Very Well. Send out an ODECON-wide shout, red alert. Get one to the First Lord Admiral's Office, and have a diplomatic confirmation of the incident sent out."
"Aye, Admiral. Right away."
"Gentlemen, as of this moment and for all intents and purposes, we are at war. I want those aircraft removed, and I want all point defences online and ready to go. Gentlemen, for queen and country. Huzzah!"
The chorus was instantaneous, raucous, and tremendous.

"Huzzah!"

Aboard a Type 45 Destroyer assigned with the fleet, Aster-30 missiles were primed, three for each fighter in the air. The aircraft had been targeted on radar almost as soon as they had been launched. Alongside them, every ship in the fleet was preparing Aster-15 missiles for point-defence, with all point-defence systems brought online.

"Weapons Officer, at your call."
"On my mark. Two, one, fire one, fire two, fire three, fire four..."

18 Aster-30's screamed off into the air, Mach 4 reached in seconds as they powered toward the fighters. On another, more Aster-30's were being readied for attacks on the searching anti-submarine aircraft. Screeching as they left the launcher, the wave of missiles would soon be on top of their targets.

Jaeger Class Destroyers were readying their 64-cell launchers. Over 500 mid-range missiles, and 60 more long-range missiles lay ready, their operators willing at a moment's notice to condemn a target to oblivion by fire.

A final radio message was sent to the Nachmerans -

"Admiral Fox, turn yourself about. Your actions have now provoked international incident, and believe me, you will want no more losses than you are about to sustain. If you leave now you will save yourself a great deal of trouble, and the loss of many members of crew over a needless and fruitless search. Your submarine is not here, Admiral, and I repeat, you are now trespassing, and force has been authorised by my superiors. I repeat, turn about and remove yourself from Parilisan waters immediately."

"Well, chaps, that was all I could do. Sound the red, and we expect every man to do his duty. And women, of course, you shan't escape Lieutenant Oswald." The Admiral's wink was enough to cause a wave of laughter throughout the crew. They were in jolly spirits, considering the situation. Confidence abounded throughout the crew - duty was duty, after all, and one could only hope to serve it as best one can.

WHS Unity, Oscar-II Class SSGN, S-5986

"Roger that control, dipping has confirmed location. Moving into position."

Active sonar was a noisy thing, and it was unsure to the Captain aboard the frigate just why they had decided to so publicly announce their presence. His orders were swift and decisive - remove them. Within seconds of the order being dispatched, four AugustaWestland AW101 helicopters, each armed with 4 Sting Ray torpedoes, were en-route to the group of submarines. They were fast, deploying the torpedoes immediately as the two nearest Fuchs class frigates each dispatched 8 ASROCs into the water - the Typhoons wouldn't last long.

Aboard the Perceptive and the Judicious, however, the story was much different. Orders were the same on both vessels - passive searching only, run silent. They couldn't afford to be found. All it would take, however, would be for one vessel to pass above the trench - and given the fact that they were looking for one particular trench, it wasn't long before one of the operators picked up the sound of a propeller echoing about the walls of the trench. The Spearfish were instantly alerted, diving down to their prey. The Judicious was soon to follow, two more Spearfish in the water and chasing their prey.

Sutfen Q-ship Wreckage

In short, Only half the crew was able to be picked from the roiling waters and wreckage of what was once a Sutfen Steamer. Of those 21 Sutfen, 11 were critically injured.

In the end, the Steamer would slip into the waves, never to be seen again.

"Sir, we just got a shout from BA. Sounds like some fascists are skirmishing with ODECON forces is Parilisan waters," a petty officer reported.

"Do we have any task forces in the area?" asked his superior officer.

"We have a Carrier Strike Group about eight hours out, sir."

"Any modules?"

"No, sir."

"Very well, order them to head towards Parilisa and assist ODECON forces."

ORIGIN: Zinairian Naval Base NB-NW
TO: ODECON Forces

MESSAGE: A Zinairian Carrier Strike Group headed by the Triumph Class carrier ZSV Bishop has been dispatched to aid ODECON forces off Parilisa. The group's ETA is eight hours.

ZSV Bishop

"We've just gotten combat orders!" the strike group's commander announced with excitement. "Take a heading N 83º W. Full power ahead. Prepare to engage enemy surface ships, air assets and, possibly, submarines within the next eight hours."

At the officer's orders, the sixteen ships of the strike group took the new heading and proceeded at full power towards Parilisa.

Sky above the Nachmere 3rd CTF

The RWR systems on the INF-2000Ns beeped all at once.
"Red Flight Heads up! Incomming missiles!"
The 6 aircraft turned and dove. A few seconds passed as each pilot fought his own private war with 3 missiles. Flares and Chaff were fired. 2 Aircraft were hit, one pilot ejected and the other went down with his Haribon.

The 3 ASW Helicopters were not as lucky, all were hit and destroyed.

CTF Operations Room, RNS "Anghele"

"They fired SAMs at our aircraft."
"Casualties?" Asked Admiral Fox.
"2 Haribons and 3 ASW helicopters"
"I want cruise missiles in the air two minutes ago. Launch whatever we have on the flight deck, arm the rest for anti-shipping and tell me whn they are ready. I want the Cruisers and three Frigates to close in, maybe we can make some use of those 16 inchers."

With in a minute each Battleaxe class ship launched 4 LY4050 missiles. Each 4were aimed at another ship in the enemies fleet. The Massive cruisers than went to full speed in an attempt to get in range for their 16 inch guns.

Each Hatchet class also launched 2 LY4050s each, and three of them rushed ahead of the Cruisers to keep them safe of air threats and incomming missiles.

The two well aged Sa'ar 4.5s launched 2 Harpoons each, and were also advancing to get in range for their shorter ranged Gabriel missiles.

The Nimitz class "Anghele" with 3 escorting Hatchets and the Type-209 turned back, to get distance between the carrier and the enemy.

The Eerie class subs were already several miles infront of the CTF, and were quietly getting in to torpedo range.

Sutufinai Navy: FLEETRON1

The Sutfen Navy had deployed one of it's 3 Naval Squadrons to trail the Q-ship. Why? The same reason they'd deployed a Q-ship. Sutfen Steamers had been harassed by well armed pirates, so the Sutfen unit had decided that they were going to do something about it. Fleet Squadron 1, wouldn't even count as a Destroyer Squadron for most Navies as the three "Clemson" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemson_class_destroyer) class destroyers came steaming over the Horizon. Their combined stacks, all 12 (4 stacks per vessel) of them, were spouting coalsmoke and sparks as they pushed their engines to the limit.

The difference between Sutfen Navy and Q-ships, were the fact that not only did the Navy have designated "Naval" units... But they were significantly better maintained. Which of course allows them to press their engines and turbines faster to pull more speed.

As the Clemson class destroyers cruised at a sustained 35 Knots, their propeller wash causing a roiling mass of foam behind the three ships. The deep thrump of the massive steam engines would designate their nationality to pretty much any sub out there.

OOC: I just noticed, I can't claim I see the "oil slick" from my Q-ship because I use coal... lol

IC - again:
Seeing the wreckage in the water, and the Wolf-Hold submarines going under because they are under attack. The fact the Sutfen Destroyer unit was here late, and didn't see a damn thing... One thing led to another, and General Quarters was sounded as the three destroyers... Outclassed by even a modern Corvette, started steaming towards the battle.

To any observer, you could swear to god see the Sutfen on the bridges using -semiphores- to communicate between ships, as well as signal flags. The saddest, or possibly bravest, thing was the fact their guns were medium-range line of sight weapons. Knowing Sutufinai, their torpedeos were duds half the time because of how old they were.

However Sutfen were dutifully taking up their positions and guns as they cruised into the aid of the Wolf Holder subs. That the 'apparent' hostile vessels that caused the destruction of the Q-Ship.

And Nachmere is not facist.

The Parilisan fleet under Admiral Amherst made straight for the combined Wolf Hold-Nachmere fleet with one intention; to aid in their absolute destruction. Threats to Parilisa’s sovereignty would not be tolerated by the nation, and the navy would do its best to get this point across. If necessary that would mean death, destruction and desolation, but so be it.

Above the fleet a squadron of F-17AL Arrowhawks screeched, flying at top speed towards the ships of Nachemere. All the pilots were trained to dodge missiles and other incoming fire, but they knew that their chances of survival in going head on with an enemy fleet were slim. Their main aim was simply to do as much damage as possible and to disrupt the enemy approach, giving enough time for the Parilisan fleet and her allies to get within range of the attackers.

As they came within firing distance the converted aircraft released their missiles, sending them spinning towards the enemy ships at full speed. Forcing their engines to their full speed they vanished as quickly as they came, ready to return and reattack.

As the F-17ALs launched their missiles and turned to run, the Hatchet class Frigates already launched 12 LY4031 missiles at the aircraft.
The flight deck of the "Anghele" was overflowing with planes and people. 8 INF2000N were already flying at a low altitude carrying thei anti-shipping load. 4 joined the 4 survivers of the SAM strike and were now flying low as well, fearing a repeat of what had just happened.

The 8 approaching missiles skimmed the sea and the Nachmerian vessels were trying to protect the carrier. 3 missiles were shot down by anti missile missiles fired by the Frigates. 1 other missile was destroyed by the CIWS system of the Sawar 4.5 class "Falcon", but she was struck by another missile and severly damaged.
The two remaining missiles were headed towards the RNS "Anghele". If the flight deck was hit while loaded with aircraft it would be a disaster. One of the Hatchet class frigates was located in the flight path of the missile. It launched decoys and 6 RIM-116 missiles. The two incomming missiles were destroyed.

A collective sigh was sounded in the operations room aboard the flagship. A rescue helciopter was sent to assist the "Falcon" with her casualties. The fire onboard the small frigate was already under control, and she reported that the hit was on deck, above the water line. Her Harpoon launcher was damaged and several men were killed or wounded.
Salzland
20-04-2009, 22:26
With the escalation of events off the coast of Parilisa, and an ODECON-wide request for assistance, the Armed Republic of Salzland's military arm leapt into action. While it would take fleet assets the better part of a day just to enter weapons range, the land-based heavy bomber force maintained by Salzland could operate without such restrictions. The Baltic Sea was less than an hour's flight from weapons range for the Lyran LY-589 Hellion (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=13525984) cruise missiles carried by Salzland's massive B-22 "Zeus" heavy bombers.

After an emergency scramble, 50 Zeus bombers were in the air, escorted by several hundred F/A-84 Shadow stealth fighters. While the risk of interception so close to mainland Salzland was relatively low, at the very least the escorting pilots would gain experience in guarding a large bomber formation. Such experience was valuable, as the Salzland Air Force was still relatively unexperienced with operating a "Zeus" formation, having only one opportunity previously to field the bombers.

Once the formation entered within 1200 miles of the Baltic, each bomber swung its massive bomb bay doors opened and released a half-dozen cruise missiles. A grand total of 300 missiles, guided by a combination of GPS, space-based RADARs, the missiles' own computer guidance systems, and datalinked information from the Parilisan and Adenian forces in-theater, sped towards the hostile forces in the region. It would take two hours for the large number of sea-skimming warheads to arrive at their targets, but once they did the results would be catastrophic. None of the vessels deployed were large enough to maintain over-the-horizon RADAR systems, meaning that they would be unable to detect the bombers. Additionally, the small, low-altitude cruise missiles could not be detected until they were at best within a half hour of their final targets, giving the enemy precious little time to respond. Should any hostile forces survive the opening salvo, further bomber raids could proceed almost hourly, given the relative proximity to their home bases in Salzland.

The Parilisan and Adenian fleets in-theater would soon receive an overwhelming quantity of support fire.

"Were being pinged! Sir.......that’s a..." Clancy was already running to the CIC, he had been listening in with his own set of head phones. The repeated four pings was the Wolf Hold Navies submarine code for something called Code Aqukinda. It was a code that could only be used during a state of war. Clancy ran into the CIC and using the ships phone transmitted the code to the whole submarine. "Code Aqukinda! Code Aqukinda!" The CIC crew looked shocked for a second know the implications of that code. Resolving themselves to their fate, they carried out there appointed tasks, each knowing off by heart what he had to do.
"Engines to 100%!"
"Dive planes 90 degrees"
"Reactor cooling offline!"
"All warheads armed!"
Clancy nodded to his men and saluted, "Men it has been a pleasure serving with you" As the crew thought it was there lot to go out with there task complete, the reality was to be otherwise. In the hurry to complete Code Aqukinda, they hadn't heard the call of "Transients! Fish in the water" The two swordfish made contact with the submarine, blowing the whole rear end of the submarine. This explosion touched off the forward magazine filled with torpedoes, the resulting explosion was clearly visible on the surface.

WHS Fire & Steel, Typhoon Class SSBN, Wolfpack 054-1

The Sonar cheif called out "Multiple Transients! Multiple fish in the water, I think we got both torps and ARSOCs Skipper! They are comming straight for us!" Admiral Keating knew that it was the end, there was no way all of his submarines could survive this, all he could do was call for the near bye battle groups which had hopefully reached there staging locations, all Keating had been was a distraction. "Time to impact?"
"Two minutes!"
"Comms depth! Raise comms attena!"
"Comms ready, broadcasting on all allied frequencies!" Keating picked up the hand set and pressed transmit. "This is Wolf Pack 054 to all nearby allied battlegroups, we request immediate support, we are under heavy ODECON attack. Request immedite naval support!" Slamming the handset down Keating bgean bellowing orders.
"Wolf Pack weapons! Fire cruise missiles at will, target Exengrad"
"Missiles firing!"
The eight Typhoons launched their RSM-25 SLBMs, 160 of the SLMBS arched into the air, targeting the Parilisan city of Exengrad. However this would be the last blow of the Wolf Hold submarine force as the torpedos and ARSOCs crashed into the Typhoons, utterly obliterating them.

As the Sutfen Naval ships closed with the Nachmere (Whom I'm guessing isn't accepting Macross Missile Massacre (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MacrossMissileMassacre)?) Naval Units, the old radios began literally crackling and squealing to life before they called over...

"Nachmere Vessels, you are ordered to stand down your weapons and come to a complete and full stop. You have fired upon Wolf Hold fleet naval units. cut your engines and prepare for boarding."

As Nachmere made no remark about my fleet moving towards the battle... I am guessing that you paid no heed to my three destroyers running up your ass a 35 Knots. As such My destroyers have managed to enter engagement range with their 3 Inch guns. While the gun crews are under orders not to fire, the few guns they can bring to bear are pointed in the correct direction and the ranging is hopefully correct.

(OOC: During the 1930s, Radar range finding was not invented. Which is why the 3 inch guns, while medium range, are still line of sight weapons. As they use optical range-finding to hit targets.)

Task Force 102
Baltic Sea, 1300km from Parilisa

The dark blue waters of the Baltic parted lazily to make way for the grey hulks of the Leistungi task force, originally dispatched for anti-piracy duties in Parilisian waters but now joined by a Streitwagen Class light aircraft carrier, bombarded by SATCOM messages from the Adenian fleet already in the vicinity. Flanking the light aircraft carrier was a flotilla of four Jäeger Class destroyers and six of the Falken variety, all falling in behind the flagship at fixed distances, long range active radar systems switched off for the time being. An additional eight Spitze Class frigates followed in tow, their impressive arsenal of surface-to-air missiles resting quietly below lightly armored decks.

Though three AWACS buzzed overhead high above the clouds, ODESTAR reconnaissance satellites had already provided target vectors with minutes-old sweep data, and aerial attack was considered a non-issue for the time being. At this point, secrecy and stealth was considered more important, and as any hostile fleet would, at this point, likely be sweeping with active radar, they would be picked up quickly and efficiently, giving the task force more than enough time to plot firing solutions. As the recon satellites continued their sweep, a flight of Etoilian F/A-38B fighters scanned the surrounding airspace, providing aerial cover for the AWACS as the task force neared Parilisian waters.

Away from the center of the task force, submarine patrol aircraft launched from the BMS Sigiswald, the carrier attached to Task Force 102, accompanied ten Warhammer and four Fuchs Class frigates in their ongoing search for hostile submarines, breaking into kill teams to scan the seas independently of the fleet as eight SSNs and two SSBNs screened the task force’s advance through international waters. Messages, both from fleet command in Hafenstadt and ODEFLE command in Stevid, streamed in at a steady pace now as the battle escalated further. The final message relayed between the ships and submarines before radio silence was established was perhaps the most disturbing, however.

ooc: i really feel bad for this.

"They are brave idiots" sighd Captain Grail of the "Racer", a Sa'ar 4.5 frigate. He thought he's ship was too old for this crap, let alone those ships.
"Launch a Gabriel and a Harpoon at each."
"Aye Aye Sir!"

6 missiles flew towards the outdated ships, and though he was about to sink the first ship in his career, he was not happy.

ooc: I hardly see the point of that post. You want to RP or just shout "I n00k you, you die"? Because 500 bombers firng 3000 cruise missiles basically means no fleet in the world could survive. You also claim you can repeat this operation quickly again. In short, I call BS on that post.

OOC: I maintain well over 2,000 heavy bombers. I launched 500 of them in the first wave. I am located less than 2,000 miles away from Parilisa. The range of the missiles that I launched is equal to just about 2,000 miles. I could've just had my bombers take off, launch, land and repeat. I could've just launched them from ground-based platforms as well. Or naval units in port. If it'll make you feel better I'll split the missiles up and fire a hundred or two from my bombers, and the rest from ground or ship-based launchers.

I fail to see how having less than a quarter of my bomber fleet on alert and capable of launching within two hours (NS time) is BS, especially considering the fact that, if an actual nuclear war broke out, any bombers on the ground after two hours would've been utterly destroyed. Taking two days to launch a large bomber formation kind of defeats the deterent value of such a force.

The point of my post was to say "Don't come into the back yards of two ODECON members, attack one of them with a tiny fleet, and expect to live."

"Shit! They have weapons moving towards us!"
...
There was only a time of 2 to 3 seconds, One ship never had a chance before the missiles we launched. The two that did, a total of 2 3 inch shells managed to go on the way, one gun was crewed by an inexperienced crew that managed to fire justb ecause it's gunner had an itchy trigger finger. The "Inexperienced" gun landed way to short to even be a worry. THe other pure HE shell, might possibly hit, but there's a 30/30/30 chance whether it will just bounce off, explode off the armor, or actually cause of damage.

However, the "Closer" destroyer actually managed to get a pair of torpedeos off, one during the Nachmere fleet's prep to fire... anbd one while the missile was in mid-air. The second Torpedeo was in-mid-air out of the tube when the Harpoon slammed into it's mothership. It was thrown off target and when sailing fort he bottom of the sea. The first Torpedeo however managed to stay roughly on course.

(Roughly being a Relative Term, their 1930s grade torpedeos, are unguided, and even if they do hit... there's a 50/50 chance it's going to "Thump" your hull and be a dud.)

Two of the destroyers were thrown like pitiful ragdolls, litterally going airborne from the explosion, no crew survived the explosions. The third had it's bow blown off, and was going down fast, However it's crew (What was left of it.) Could be seen leaping overboard.

ooc: actually we dident attack anyone. wolfhold was intruding into to national waters, but he dident fire a single shot beofre he was attacked. I also only asked for the wolfhold sub to be left to escape, and again, you fired first.

Now, if you want me to make a post saying 400 missiles were shot down and the rest tore the battle group to pieces and end this thread there, im cool with that. or we could just RP what a naval battle would look like. As for having a quarter of your aircraft on alert at all times, if you think that any rational nation dose that, your wrong.

OOC: The United States' Strategic Air Command not only maintained a majority of its force on ready alert (and I mean majority, not the less than 25% that I maintain) during points of the Cold War, but actually had a hefty portion of its aircraft in the air at all times. Why, you might ask? Because maintaining a nuclear-armed bomber fleet as a deterrent that can't get off the ground before it gets nuked is utterly pointless. And my military is presently at a high state of alert, so with reports of a missile sub in national waters, an overwhelming display of force would certainly be in order.

But if it's going to kill the RP then fine, divide everything I put up by 10, and pick off what you will.

Putting a ballistic missile submarine in national waters, however, is most assuredly an act of war, so pointing fingers about who fired first is ridiculous.

The 3 inch shell hit the front of the Sa'ar. It smashed quite a bit of gear and one crewmen was badly injured. The torpedo was engaged with a decoy and exploded at a safe distance from the frigate. A cheer was heard from the fire control room as the 3 enemy ships were sunk.

ooc: ok, thats more than fair. I like compromise.

RNS "Anghele", CTF operations room:

"Sir, we have major incomming! Looks like 450 cruise missiles heading our way, about 25 minutes to impact!"

"Holy shit, as the saying goes. Recall our ships, I want the hatchets and Sa'ars between us and this flying hell. Get what ever aircraft we have to try and shoot these missiles down. All the captains need to come up with evasion plans ASAP. And start praying."

The fleet had to break off its intent to engage the enemy surface ships and focus on surviving what seemed like a very fatal blow. As the frigates were being moved between the threat and the larger vessels, 8 INF-2000N were flying at low speed carrying 6 AMRRAMS and 2 Sidwinders each. To launch the AMMARAMS at this altittude would mean very little chances of making kills, but they couldent get too high up for fear of SAM fire. 48 AMMRAMS flew off towards the incomming cruise missiles, with the 8 aircraft closing in to use their Sidewinders and even guns if needed. 20 of the missiles managed to find thei targets, while the pilots already launched their Sidewinders. Of the Sidewinders only 7 hit targets. still more than 400 missiles were heading for the CTF.

"Thats not good enough. Send any fighter we have airborne." Admiral Fox was now very worried.

After much effort the fighters launched managed to shoot down a total of 52 missiles. The rest flew on into the carrier task force. As the Hacthet class and Sa'ar 4.5 launched huge ammounts of anti0missile missiles the noumber of incomming missiles was down to 350 soon. Decoys were launched and CIWS fired like mad at the rain of incomming missiles.

It was a very brave effort, but it was pointless...
The first 4 missiles hit one of the Hatchet class frigates togather. The ship was torn to pieces. Some missiles exploded on decoys in the water and air, but 5 more hit another of the Hatchet class ships, and it too was blown out of the water. The Sa'ar 4.5s, both already damaged, fired everything they had, but both took hits that caused them to litteraly dissapear. Another Hatchet Class was hit by a single missile and was severly damaged, most of its crew killed or wounded. Than came the turn of the 3 frigates closes to the carrier. One of them was hit by a missile and lightly damaged. The other two managed to escape unharmed.

Only 55 or so missiles passed the last line of three frigates and headed to the cruisers and the carrier. The big ships had their own CIWS, but these were swamped by the incomming madness. 8 missiles hit one of the Battleaxe cruisers, and it broke to two pieces and started sinking. 3 more hit another cruiser and it lost all engine power, most of its weapon systems, and much of its crew. The third Battleaxe was only hit by one missile, which exploded on the water near it. It suffered minor damages. The "Anghele" was hit directly on the rear of the flight deck, by 2 missiles. Another exploded on the water just 70 meters from the ship. It lost 35 men and some systems.

Admiral Fox was shaken, but mostly mad at how small a force he now had.
"Order the survivers to turn and withdraw. We cant waste time on rescuing, or we will loose what ships survived this. Oh...And order all remaining ships to fire all of their possible weapons towards the enemy force."

"Aye aye sir!"

50 missiles were fired towards the surface ships facing the Nachmere fleet over the next 3 minutes, as the Nachmere fleet turned to run.

"We might at least kill a few of the bastards" Fox muttered

OOC: Nachmere, please re-read my post.

ooc: ahh, not that it matters after the complete shit-hitting-the fan defeat...either way a Sa'ar 4.5 is probably faster than a 1930s torpedo.

OOC: Not gunna press the issue and force you to take any hits. Just FYI, the Type 93 Torpedo had a range of 13.67 miles at a speed of 52 Knots/60 Miles per hour. And the American WW2 torpedeo: 6,000 Yards at 45 Knots.

While modern ships may be able to out run them, torpedeos are up to speed nearly instantly. Whereas a ship may have to get up to 45 or 52 knots over the course of minutes or longer.

OPEN COMMUNICATION FROM THE DESK OF HER IMPERIAL AND SERENE MAJESTY, EIRENA IV OF NEW CHALCEDON.

Circulated to all parties invovled in the conflict currently involving the Armed Republic of the Wolf Hold and the Armed Republic of Salzland.

To all parties involved in this conflict;

It has come to Our attention that forces holding allegiance to Our true and trusted ally, the Armed Republic of the Wolf Hold, have come into conflict with forces holding allegiance to Our friends of Salzland. This is a lamentable state of affairs, and one that the Crown offers its services as mediator to bring to an end.

For the sake of regional peace and stability, We urge all parties involved to contact Us and stipulate terms under which Our offer of mediation is acceptable.

Your Excellency,

It has come to Our attention that, once again, Our nation's sometime allies of the Wolf Hold have provoked other nations into hostile actions against them. We perfectly understand the needs of the great nation of Salzland in this matter, and would be perfectly willing, in light of the support that the Armed Republic of the Wolf Hold has expressed for Our treasonous sister in our struggle (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=590114), to reconsider the Empire's position as a member of the CIN - and possibly apply for membership of ODECON instead, with all the military alliances that entails.

Of course, such realignment is contingent upon Our regaining of Our rightful throne, and although Our armies are sweeping all rebel resistance ahead of us, We would most certainly not forget aid rendered from those who wish to be considered true friends of the Empire in her time of need. One last note: please do not allow this communication to fall into the wrong hands.

Cyaxares Melepotas, newly-reinstated President of the Republic of New Chalcedon, saw the possibility of a lifeline here. He had risked all to come back from exile at the behest of a handful of his once-colleagues and attempt to restart the idea of a New Chalcedon free of the antiquated trappings of monarchy.

But the expected rallying of the people had at best only happened half-heartedly. Despite the fact that a dynastic war was tearing the Empire up, the name "Palaiologos" still carried with it a mystique that couldn't be so easily overcome. And the armed forces were the worst: only a small fraction of the armed forces had elected to serve the Republic, rather than the Emperor or Empress.

Still, he reminded himself, that was an advantage. His forces may be tiny compared to his opponents, but that meant that they didn't take him seriously. And whilst he dared not strike directly at one or the other - for fear of tipping their uneasy balance of power - he could send what forces he posessed to garner support from abroad, the better to match his enemies at home later.

He sent for Senator Maria Opthalamea, his chief foreign policy advisor, and the two of them drafted a few letters.

The Republic of New Chalcedon, unlike the splintered Imperial factions, stands ready to swiftly honour our treaty obligations to the Wolf Hold in this conflict - with a carrier task group.

However, such aid is contingent upon the Armed Republic's recognition of the Republic as the sole legitimate government of New Chalcedon, and the consequent withdrawal of WDC forces currently propping up the Imperials.

Your Excellency,

The Republic of New Chalcedon is a new polity. We are unbound by treaties entered into by the corrupt Imperial governments, and are therefore prepared to aid the Armed Republic of Salzland with a carrier group against hte Wolf Hold.

However, this offer is contingent upon the immediate recognition of the Republic as the sole legitimate governing authority over New Chalcedon, and the provision of forces sent to our side to aid us in restoring order after the depredations of the monarchists. Your Highness,

I must sincerely thank you for your expression of support in this troubling situation. It is our hope that, at this time, that a diplomatic solution might be reached. We must, unfortunately, wait to discover whether the missiles our surveillance satellites detected being launched by alleged Wolf Hold submarines against our allies in Parilisa carry conventional or nuclear weapons.

Mr. President,

Having received your message, I must thank you for your offer of support in the current incident involving the attack on Parilisa. Your offer to provide a Carrier Battle Group to assist us is extremely generous, and one which has been received with the gratitude due to it.

While the Armed Republic sympathizes with your cause, as the establishment of stable, democratically-elected governments are in the best interests of all who desire the spread of freedom and civilization throughout the world, Salzland is not able to recognize your government as the sole and legitimate holder of power in New Chalcedon.

It is the opinion of the Armed Republic that, only through all three parties working together to re-unite the Empire, will the ongoing civil war be resolved in New Chalcedon's best interests. Were we to back your faction over the others, we would most likely serve only to unite the Imperial factions against your own, and the Armed Republic does not have the capacity to engage both. Were we to back one of the Imperial factions over yours and the other, it would most likely drive supporters of the faction we supported into the camps of the others. We are not entirely ignorant of the potentially disasterous consequences presented by the type of wide-scale foreign military interventions that would be required to settle this conflict in a rapid and relatively bloodless manner.

Thank you again for your offer of support, and please rest assured that your message and this reply will be held in the utmost security and confidentiality.

1300 Nautical miles from battle

The Longsword-Class (http://http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=551930) SCGMC dwarfed the rest of the fleet, at one kilometre long and 200 metres in width. There weren’t many ships in the world that could measure up to it for sheer destructive fire power and physiological effect. Sailing next to the Fell were two Marshall-Class (Queen Elizabeth-Class) Aircraft Carriers, four modernised Iowa-Class battleships and eight Ticonderoga class cruisers. Finally in a circle around the WHS Fell was a ring of Type 23 frigates ensuring complete ASW protection around the battlegroup.

3rd Wolf's Marshall Decker was leading the battle group. Unlike the 1st Wolf’s Marshall and the vice-Wolf’s Marshall, the positions of 3rd and 4th Wolf’s Marshalls were more operational command positions. Standing at the centre of the Fell’s CIC he watched the display screen’s and listened to the various officers call out reports as they came over the radio link.
“SLBMs en-course for Exengrad”
“3rd CTF appears to of suffered heavy casualties and is withdrawing!”
“Battlegroup reports full combat readiness! All ships report general quarters!”
“Combat Air Patrol”
Pleased that the battlgroup had responded so fast, Decker now had to make a decision that could have drastic consequences. Hold the battle group here or commit to the offensive. After a moment of deliberation he decided.
“Hold the battle group here in international waters, continue the missile attack”
"Aye aye Wolf's Marshall"

At the same time the 160 SLMBs continued there flight path towards Exengrad.

Although most of the aircraft were fast and nimble enough to avoid the incoming missiles, one was critically hit and, flames bursting from its engines, began a painful and fatal descent. Realising he was heading directly for the deck of a busy ship, the wounded pilot took the opportunity to look down his blood spattered scope and spray the deck with a fierce barrage of machine gun fire. Then, with a sickening crunch and an almighty crash, the fighter came spinning onto the deck in an explosion of flame and torn metal.

WHS Unity, Oscar-II Class SSGN, S-5986

WHS Fell, Battlegroup Fell

3rd Wolf's Marshall Decker heard the last broadcast of the Wolfpack. His battlegroup had set full steam from Port Palla Naval base as soon as the sub had gone of the air. Now all he had needed was that request.
"Flag to the battlegroup, full speed"

“This is Admiral Amherst, of the emergency defence fleet, to Naval Command.”
“Command receiving Admiral.”
“We have reason to believe that a Wolf Hold ship just launched warheads at Exengrad. I repeat; affirmative missile launch against Exengrad.”
“Can you confirm strike number?”
“We believe it to be above 100. There is a possibility that this is a nuclear strike.”
“Fuck.” Came the reply, in a cold voice. “Fucking bastards.”
“These fucking bastards have to be stopped. Stop the bombs. I’ll go after the enemy. You have to stop those missiles. The future of Parilisa is in our hands. There is no time for hesitation.”

PNS Invincible

Under Amherst’s instruction the entire Parilisan fleet changed course, heading towards WHS Fell and the surrounding Battlegroup. Victory, Amherst had decided, was not the sole aim of this manoeuvre; vengeance had priority. He had to do the maximum damage in the minimum time. To aid in his attack he called upon the Arrowhawks who, although disorganised after their attack on Nachmere, would be another thorn in the Holdians sides, with their missile and combat capabilities.

Exengrad

There were soldiers in the streets, rushing everyone they could into the underground rail system in a primitive attempt at shelter. They had to act fast in the limited time that was allowed to them before the missile strike hit, and their tactics were far from foolproof, but they had to do their best in the emergency. In Prezdorf an Emergency Defence Council had been called by the President in response to the developing crisis, but at the moment they were unaware of the incoming missiles.

Since the Middle Ages Parilisans had been aware that Exengrad’s strategic position meant it was an imperative defensive asset for control of the sea and the nation. That was why defences had been built here since ancient times; but the anti-aircraft guns and missile defence system was much more effective than the castles of ancient kings. The system, PARDEF, had the capability to stop the incoming barrage, but the question now was if it would.

As the missiles sped across the Bay of Exengrad the system was activated, and a host of anti-missile ballistics tore from their holds in the sides of the bay. The water beneath seemed to blaze with fire and explosives as the weapons collided with fierce explosions. Those that go through the first level were halted by the second. In the chaotic carnage that followed nearly all the enemy weapons were destroyed and in their control room the operators of PARDEF let out a sigh of relief.

But their relief was short lived. A missile had survived the attack and continued speeding towards the city.

In the streets the soldiers paused and looked up, mouths wide open. They had not expected to see a missile fly through their homeland in their lifetimes.

The explosion woke them to reality; a loud bang and crash of debris rang across the almost silent city. An office block on the main street had been hit and was teetering on the brink of collapse; bits of damaged masonry were showered like shrapnel through the windows of adjacent buildings and littered the road like a barricade. There were dead in the wreckage, of that there could be no doubt.

The cold blue glare of the WHS Fell's CIC lit up Decker's face as he stood in the centre observing all the crew members who were busy carrying out their duties. From one side came the voice of the seamen he had detailed to keep track of the SLBM attack on Exengrad.

Albeit the Sutufinai had died due to a mistake on both Nachmere's and their part, Decker believed that ODECON was responsible for the miss-hap.
"Wolf's Marshall! I have Parilisan fleet re-directing towards us, main fleet seems to be holding near Exengrad but a small force, aircraft included is heading straight for us" It was the XO of the Fell, Wolf's Commander Shaw, he normally would command the vessel when it was not in use, the Fell had been on routine patrol recently so Shaw wasn't happy that he had to get used to following orders again.
"Very good Wolf's Commander, show them the error of their ways, no one messes with my Battlegroup, feel free volley them with a few thousand missiles" Decker merely looked at the radar screen and watched as the Parilisan Fleet approached.
"Very good Wolf's Marshall!" Snapping a salute Shaw was now in his element, he was in command of the most powerful ship in the area. "Weapons get me firing solutions for the LY4045 anti-ship cruise missiles, ready the Port and starboard arrays!"

"Weapons ready, firing solutions plotted! Number of missiles is all I need Skipper"

"Two-thousand LY4045 should see them off, fire arrays! Take those bastards down!"

"Aye Aye, Skipper!" As soon as the word fire was heard the weapons chief slammed his fire button. On the front of the Fell flames leapt into the air, as the 2000 missiles ignited their main boosters and sped off for the Parilisan fleet.

Official Press Release From the Ministry of Defense

Effective as of 2200 Greenwich Mean Time on April 21st, 2009 elements of the Salzland Navy will be deploying for fleet exercises in the area known as the North Sea. These exercises have been scheduled in advance, and are in no way a response to ongoing tensions off the coast of Parilisa. The exercises will continue for an undisclosed amount of time and will include live-fire weapons testing. Due to live-fire weapons drills, transit through the North Sea will be highly restricted for the duration of the exercises in order to prevent accidental damage to foreign shipping.

Task Force 102
Some distance from the Parilisan coast

A mass of rid blips appeared on the BMS Sigiswald’s passive radar array as the Wolf Holder missiles left their launch tubes and shot into the afternoon sky, smoke trails not visible from the Leistungi task force’s position. The first mate of the [/i]Sigiswald[/I] immediately notified friendly fleets in the area via satellite link and turned to the Captain for orders, the bridge suddenly quiet as all eyes turned to the aged man.

“Unless we’ve been identified visually, Captain, they cannot possibly know our location,” the first mate stated brazenly. “Our fire control and search radars are not functioning in active mode, and our AWACS have switched off their long range search radars for the time being – I suggest a counter-strike before the enemy has time to find us.” The captain turned, his grey eyes and unkempt beard giving him the appearance of, ironically, a wolf, as he barked orders to the various stations around the vessel.

“Agreed. Contact the Chemnitz and order an immediate retaliatory strike against whatever massive ship launched that last barrage – LM.39Hs, at least thirty-two of them, and make sure the warheads are armor piercing. If the Chemnitz is unable to comply, the Konigsberg will assume command of the situation.” The orders were relayed hastily to the two destroyers and within seconds the thirty-two missiles had launched, smoke obscuring the decks of the destroyers as the missiles' metal frames hugged the water. Simultaneously, the three circling AWACS engaged their search radar, picking up the missiles in flight and assuming control of midcourse guidance.

At sixty kilometers from the target, the missiles would separate from their turbofan engines, rocketing to Mach 2 on solid-fuel boosters and reaching an altitude of ten thousand feet. With the missiles’ guidance being controlled by the AWACS, the vessel would have no warning whatsoever until sixty kilometers out—and by the time the missiles reached altitude, there would be a mere forty seconds time to respond to the threat—hardly enough time to organize anything serious, at least in practice. Once altitude was reached, the booster would jettison, releasing chaff on its way to the water to fool anti-missile systems, and the missile’s ramjet would propel it to Mach 4.3, the one thousand kilogram warheads and armor piercing shaped charges penetrating up to two centimeters of armor before detonation in the superstructure of the ship.

To: Wolf Hold Central Command
From: ODECON Office of Foreign Affairs

Having recently received word of a missile strike against the Parilisan port city of Exengrad and a potentially ensuing naval conflict, we are greatly concerned for the nations of Parilisa and the Wolf Hold, their civilians, and their fighting men and women. As such, I write a plea for Wolf military assets to withdraw from the waters immediately surrounding Parilisa and for them to return home. There is no need for further loss of life.

As you may or may not know, there is word that a missile circumvented the defense structure around the port and has destroyed a civilian target. It is with no good conscience that I could simply ask for complete withdrawal from the vicinity. Therefore, I must also request the nation of the Wolf Hold make recompense for the lives of the innocents lost as result of the strike against Exengrad. The actions of your military may be forgiven and we may all stand down from this boiling point -- I have no desire to see more wasted lives and materiel as the result of the careless action of the submariners who crossed into the waters of sovereign Parilisa. What fortune that the vessel involved was not nuclear armed, for I fear that would have been a point from which there would be no return.

Here and now, however, there is. Call off the forces in and around Parilisa, cease hostilities, and we may all live in peace and prosperity beside one another. I need not remind your esteemed leadership of the aid that one of our members has offered to your nation during its past troubles.

I appeal to, and trust in, your intellect and reason.

HMS Elissa, Sovereign Class Cruiser, C3

"Sir, we have missiles en-route. I count 28 tangos all told."
"Sir, we have 3 ships moving away from the fleet. Cross-section indicates Battleaxe class cruisers. I'm also picking up Jacks, 6 in a covering formation."
"Battleaxes, eh? Easily dealt with. Ready counter-measures, instruct one of the Jaeger destroyers to give them a sufficient salvo to put those missiles out of action, followed by a Horizon volley - half standard, half systems-denier. Give them an 18-missile volley of the A-900's, and we'll seal the deal properly. Weapons officer, prioritise as necessary. Let's get this done, folks, and be ship-shape about it."
"Aye sir!"

64 Aster-15's left the decks of various Jaegers, making immediately for the incoming missiles. High-accuracy, and with a 100% success in their initial testing providing a confidence-boosting reputation if nothing more, more than half the missiles were eliminated. Ships began to scatter, deploying countermeasures and engaging with point-defence missiles and guns. Culminating in the sinking of one of the Type 23 frigates and further crippling one of the Jaeger class destroyers, the attack was largely unsuccessful. The Adenian reply was immediate, and determined. 18 A-900 missiles, effective and deadly, were launched - 6 for each of the the Battleaxe cruisers. Added to this deadly-in-itself salvo were 48 Horizon AShMs, groups of four aimed at the "jack of all trades, master of none" Hatchet class frigates. Half of these were systems-denial weapons, designed to split into submunitions and target exposed radars, VLS systems, and naval guns, aimed at ensuring that there would be no countermeasure. Their superior speed would ensure the frigates would be hit first, the A-900s soon following to destroy the Battleaxe cruisers.

B-Amiizkl, "Zeke", AugustaWestland AW101 Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopter

"Contact, contact!" The operator was urgent as the dipping sonar showed two targets on his screen.
"Location and bearing, Zeke?" The Fuchs class frigate was already preparing her ASROCs."
"I have two contacts, bearing directly at the Elissa. Co-ordinates on your screen."
"Roger that Zeke, ASROCs enroute."

2 Mk.41 VLS systems fired off their cargo, and two ASROCs screamed off toward their targets, "Zeke" keeping a close eye on their position hovering just above the sea.

"Sir, RADAR is tracking a large force moving into the North Sea. Estimate over 70 surface contacts. Electronic emissions from the new contacts indicate the presence of at least two super-capital ships, most likely Longsword class. Orders?" asked Electronics Technician Jake Wilson.

"Very well, let's get this show underway. Broadcast the message, and inform me when we have a reply. And supplement the Combat Air Patrol with our Alert Five fighters," answered Fleet Admiral Frank Davidson, commander of the Salzland Second Fleet. Publicly, the Salzland fleet was participating in scheduled live-fire weapons tests in the North Sea, which had no connection to the ongoing events in Parilisa.

In actuality, the fleet's orders were to strictly limit the transit of naval forces through the North Sea, and especially the Skaggerak Strait. With multiple ballistic missile launches against a firm Salzland ally, and the appearance of nearly a dozen hostile ballistic missile submarines within Parilisan waters already, FLEETCOM wanted the situation to be de-escalated immediately. That meant blocking the flow of potentially hostile reinforcements, before events escalated into an actual nuclear confrontation. That meant control of the North Sea, and the Skaggerak Strait.

Having detected the approach of your large force of surface ships, I must inform you that you are approaching a live-fire weapons testing zone, and must halt immediately. At this time a large quantity of anti-ship missiles are being evaluated by the Salzland Navy, for potential incorporation into the fleet. We do not want to risk an accident occuring, which could incite a larger conflict, over a publicly-declared live fire weapons test.

Should your forces continue to willfully and knowfully advance into the live-fire weapons testing zone, we require that your host nation accept liability for any accidents which may occur.

OOC: 2000? I think that’s slightly unrealistic. Could you consider amending the number slightly?

Amherst was horrified by the terrifying sight of hundreds of missiles heading towards his fleet.

“Launch defensive missiles!” he shouted. “All ships should launch defensive missiles.” As usual his order was carried out instantly, with all available sailors throwing themselves to their duty with the zeal and dedication the Parilisan Armed Forces were famous for. They might not be the most numerous, well equipped or finely trained professional fighting force in the world, but they certainly had the passion and strength of spirit.

The Admiral’s ship, a Blitzschnell Class Destroyer by the name of PNS Invincible, was the fastest to act, launching missiles into the oncoming onslaught of weaponry just as the Port of Exengrad had done moments before. Although far from perfect, the Admiral was confident the defensive measure, now taken up be the rest of the fleet, allowed him enough time in which to fire on the huge enemy ship.

WHS Fell was the main target; Amherst knew that the ship was worth over $1000billion, and therefore reckoned that its destruction would be the most damaging action he could take against the enemy. He also knew that the crew aboard this ship was so populous that he would be hard pressed to not take plenty of enemy lives.

Missiles had broken through; five continued spiralling towards the ships. One landed with a blast upon a small OPV, not part of the fleet, which had been relaying important messages back to Exengrad. The small boat stood no chance against the missile, which left it sinking as an empty shell of a vessel. With great talent the gunners of two of PNS Blitzen and PNS Thunor managed to stop another two missiles with their accuracy.

Two missiles, however, did considerable damage to the fleet. One struck PNS Valiant and the other PNS Wilhelm, two of the fleet’s most well manned frigates. With a large explosion the helm of Wilhelm was severely damaged, leaving a gaping hole in the metal flank of the ship through which thick billows of smoke twisted and turned. Valiant was hit bellow the waterline and water quickly started to gush through the penetration, causing the ship to sink a little in the water. Although the boat was designed so that the water could not spread to the rest of the ship it made it considerably slower, and it began to trail behind the rest of the fleet. Wilhelm was difficult to steer due to the lack of vision which the dark cloud left the sailors of the boat in, and the navigator had to find his way using only the machines at his disposal.

“Send them to hell, Captain!”
“With pleasure Admiral. Load torpedoes! Prepare SS-N-22 missile. Fleet will follow suit and engage the enemy.”

Four of the powerful SS-N-22 missiles were now being prepared by the fleet. Some of the most dangerous missiles any ship could face, they would hopefully be difficult to intercept and would almost certainly do considerable damage to Fell. One sailor, who had received news of the attack on Exengrad form an officer, found a piece of chalk usually used to mark supplies. Carefully he found a space on the missile and wrote in huge capitals:

FOR THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF EXENGRAD

“The bastards won’t be able to read it,” he mumbled to himself. “But by God they’ll feel it.”

Meanwhile the Todlich Submarines were loading their torpedo tubes with missiles. 1000lbs of warhead would be launched from each of the fleet’s 56 tubes towards Fell and the surrounding ships. The rest of the fleet were also preparing for battle in their own ways, sorting themselves out with the benefit of years of experience.

One by one the ships radioed Amherst with confirmation of their preparation.

“Fleet…” said Amherst, pausing for a moment to see stare in horror at the wreckage caused to his fleet by the enemy blasts. “Fire!”

The order was repeated on every ship in the fleet, and as one they released their missiles. The most powerful of these were the SS-N-22’s, but the supporting barrage would contribute to damaging the colossal ship. Amherst was used to the noise made by this amount of missiles, but the sound still surprised him and the knowledge that beneath the surface of the water 56 more missiles were shooting towards their target sent a thrill through his heart.

“Avenge Exengrad.” he said, as the weapons tore through the sky.

Office of the Hegemon, Sumguaia:

Mary Basset sighed as she read the papers before her. Reports continued to come in about a naval incident in Parilisian waters which was now escalating with a recent missile attack upon a Parilisian city by Wold-Holdian ships. She ran her hands through her hair, and opened a drawer of her desk to take out a small box.

Robert Stevens opened the door of the Hegemon's office. She, poring over a document as a thin cigar in her mouth was leaving a faint trail of smoke in the air, did not appear to notice him. He walked to a chair sitting in front of the desk and sat down, smirking. "I wasn't aware that you smoked, Mary."

"Normally I don't." She replied, not looking up. "I was given a box of cigars as a gift by some Zinarian company that manufactures them. Since then I usually smoke one or two a month, when situations as stressful as the current one arise." She leaned back, looking up. "But you are not here for us to talk of such things; we have important business to discuss."

Stevens chuckled. "Never a spare moment for the Hegemon, eh? I am all ears, milady."

"The Holy Empire has need of the Commerical Federation security forces, Robert." Mary began. "There has been a missile attack upon a Parilisian city by ships of the Wolf Hold, and there are ongoing naval skirmishes in Parilisian waters between ODECON forces and those of the Wolf Hold and Nachmere. We wish to contract a fleet of warships from you to accompany a naval taskforce to Parilisian waters, for the purpose of protecting our ally from any further threats to its mainland. We will pay half of the fee upon the fleet's launch, and half upon its return."

Stevens smirked. "Milady, we would be more than happy to accept your offer, and are honored that the Holy Empire has chosen us to assist in this operations. Now, let us talk specifics."

Sunlight gleamed upon the hulls of hundreds of warships as the combined Commercial Federation and Hegemonic fleet made its way through international waters, headed for Parilisa. The sailors looked forward to what would hopefully be merely a vacation in Parilisian coastal cities.

It is regrettable that civilians lost their lives in the missile attack on the city of Exengrad, we wish to assure you that the missiles were targeted for military instillations inside the city, however as is the nature with such weapons that it missed and regrettably killed civilians. However such is conflict, whilst the death of every civilian is regrettable we must move on.

Whilst we admire your attempt to ensure peace, we wish to point out that all are forces within Parilisan waters are dead, the battlegroup currently being engaged is well within international waters so I see no need to have my ships withdraw. Whilst your attempt is admirable, whilst your fellow alliance members continue to attack our assets in the area, we see no reason to stand down.

We do not forget the assistance your humanitarian society rendered us during that dark time, however in matters of this scale the acts of one NGO can have no bearing on the policies of a nation.

How interesting it is that all blame for the continuing conflict has been placed on ODECON, while it was in fact the Wolf Hold which had a ballistic missile submarine parked in Parilisan waters during peacetime, and the Wolf Hold which fired a mass missile attack against uninvolved civilian targets in Exengrad.

Why should your ships withdraw? Because international waters are not a place to lounge unmolested after one has attempted to raze a major allied city! Should we sit back and allow your fleets to continue menacing off the coast of Parilisa, knowing full well that another strike on a major city may be imminent? Your "assets in the area" are nothing more than enemy combatants, reinforcements for forces forward-deployed to sow devastation across the cities of Parilisa, for no reason other than to inflate the egos of the Wolf Hold's military leaders.

We have made our offer plainly, and considering the alternative, it is extraordinarily generous. We ask you once more to reconsider, before the conflict escalates further and more lives are lost. If the terms are unacceptable for any reason, we would welcome a conference to further discuss them, to be held in Osterwieck, Leistung, at the headquarters of the Coalition.

Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy
Letter to the office of the Prime Minister of Stevid
Delivered through Delian League channels

Dear Sir,*

I write on behalf of the Office of the President to inquire as to your own position and that of Stevid with regard to the recent hostilities between ODECON and the nations of Nachmere and the Wolf Hold. So far as we in Manth are aware, vessels from either the Wolf Hold, Nachmere, or both were found in the territorial waters of Parilsa and an immediate strike was launched to destroy them; shots were then fired in retaliation and the intruders were driven out with damage done to both sides. Intelligence about the beginning of the conflict is admittedly somewhat incomplete at the moment and if there are any holes in this basic picture of the situation, please forgive myself and the Denomination of Strategy.

The Union fully recognizes the rights of ODECON states to patrol and defend their own territorial waters, but we do feel worried about the idea - given both by ODECON nations' fleet movements and deployments, and those public communications that have so far been released by ODECON member states - that ODECON may be planning to expand what started as a conflict over an unexplained intrusion into Parilsan waters into a larger international war. I do not ask you to reveal any information that ODECON may be keeping to itself about its plans, but, if it is consistent with Stevidian policy, I would ask that Stevid exert its influence within ODECON in favor of a swift and peaceful solution if at all possible, or at least in favor of ODECON allowing some time for diplomacy to defuse the conflict before further pressing its attack. In addition to the more general prospect of a widespread naval war and the direct suffering and destruction it would cause, as well as the disruption to commerce and prosperity both for belligerents and uninvolved nations, there is also the possibility of disrupting future military operations in Strator aimed towards the end of the slave trade in that state, operations in which both Nachmere and the Greater Economic Union of New Manth are involved. Though Manth maintains no other ties to Nachmere and our nations are co-belligerents, not allies, with regards to Strator, we are nonetheless loath to see a situation developing which could hamper our efforts to end the Stratorian slave trade.

There is also a certain concern within the Denomination - shared, I admit, by myself - that further escalation of conflict could also drive the Government of Nachmere towards greater reliance on the friendship and protection of Anghele. We in Manth would prefer to see the Anghelese influence in Nachmere decreased, not increased, but it is the fear of the Denomination that expanded hostilities with ODECON would have the opposite effect. The reasons why we would not wish a blatantly oppressive and frankly evil state to expand its sphere of influence are, I trust, quite clear.

The Union has contacted the government of Nachmere to determine whether that government would accept an immediate truce and armistice if offered by ODECON, and if the answer is positive we are eager to know whether it would be acceptable to Stevid and to ODECON as well.

Kind regards,

Ismail Fahmy, Director

Letter to the Government of Nachmere

Sirs,

Putting aside concerns about the cause of your nation's current conflict with ODECON, I would like to inquire whether your government would accept a proposal of a truce and armistice with ODECON in order to prevent the expansion of hostilites from a limited to a general level, if such an agreement were offered by the ODECON side.

The Union has been in contact with certain ODECON nations to determine whether such an offer would be possible, and we in the Denomination of Foreign Diplomacy, as well as our colleagues in the Denomination of Strategy are hopeful that if ODECON can see its way clear to making such an offer, the Government of Nachmere would be willing to accept it and end the current hostilities between Nachmere and ODECON.

Somewhere between the fleets, in international waters

An aging, rusty four-hundred ton fishing boat flying the Sortmarker flag was busy bobbing up and down between the three or four enemy fleets. It had not yet left the area mainly because, since the engine hadn't worked for ten years, the boat was moved by a jury-rigged sail mast and the top speed was about three or four knots. The fact that the radio was seventy years old and only worked sporadically probably hadn't helped either. That the crew only spoke Karelian and a little broken Russian was just icing on the cake.

They had been stubbornly swearing at the calm winds and praying for a bit more speed ever since fighters and missiles started flying around and the occasional explosion was heard in the distance, on one side or another.

THE REPUBLIC OF PARILISA

TO: Marshall Cain, The Wolf Hold
FROM: President Klein, Parilisa

Dear Marshall Cain,

Once again, it would seem, the armed forces of The Wolf Hold have convinced themselves that it is acceptable to threaten Parilisan sovereignty. At a time when relations between our nations are tense, to say the least, you see fit to command the presence of a highly dangerous submarine in our national water, in the full knowledge that such an action is utterly illegal. That you seek to blame ODECON for this shows either your ignorance of international convention, or your belief in the nobility of deceit. You simply cannot have submarines of that kind in a nation’s waters without expecting a dose of resistance.

By far the most atrocious of your crimes, however, is that you have knowingly launched a missile at a civilian target in an attempt to seek some sort of victory from this battle. I tell you that this is unforgivable and must not go unavenged.

I do not, however, seek further loss of life. I do not seek war. I demand, insist and command you to remove all Holdian naval presence from the area immediately. It seems wise to meet you face to face to discus the terms which will keep peace, but until then it is important that you comply with our wishes peacefully and without resistance.

We are not afraid of you and your mindless aggression, we will never be afraid of any international thug who believes it is usual conduct to attempt to bully his way into power across the world. I advise, as I have said, that for the benefit of my nation and yours that you seek a swift and speedy peace.

Yours Sincerely,

“What the hell is that?” said Amherst, observing the two ships bobbing about uselessly in the middle of the conflict. The boats were a comically tragic scene as they floated at the mercy of the wind and the sea, surrounded by chaos and destruction.

“Foreign shipa, that’s for sure Admiral.” Replied Captain Brandt. “Certainly not Parilisan, by its design and shape anyway. We’d never have anything like that in Exengrad!”

“Send the poor buggers an offer of help, we don’t want any more casualties than are necessary in this petty battle.”

As such, we shall be dispatching a naval taskforce to rendevous with allied forces. While I of course wish for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, and urge all sides to call an armstice and attempt to find a more diplomatic end to the conflict, it does not mean that I shall leave friends alone in battle, should it come to that. Delivered by Hand by a Court-Appointed Messenger of Her Imperial Majesty Queen Amelia I

To Her Royal Majesty, and Her Royal Majesty's Government:

Your addition of further materiel to this conflict is highly counter-productive to the aims at hand - we remind your Majesty that The Wolf Hold is a needless aggressor in this situation, as outlined in the recently-released report and statement by one of our Admirals.

Adenia seeks only peace in this situation - we too have lost men due to the needless actions of a foolhardy few, and we wish this upon no-one else. The Wolf Hold, whether it likes it or not, holds full responsibility for their actions, and further incentive for this needless and disruptive conflict to continue is unneeded.

We respectfully ask that you withdraw your deployment - Adenia has no wish to further deploy ships herself in order to protect her already at-risk assets, and we regard all attempts to deploy further ships by all parties an unnecessary risk to any all peace processes.

You claim to wish for peace - peace is better served with the removal of arms, not the injection of them.

With Kind Regards,

WHS Fell, Longsword-Class Super Capital Guided Missile Cruiser, Battle group Fell

The atmosphere on the CIC was very tense as the crew waited for the damage assessment of the volley of missiles launched at the Parilisan fleet.
"We have got hits! Confirmed hits on two Parilisan ships! Estimate moderate damage!" Called out a radar technician his eyes glued to the screen.
"Parilisan fleet launching missiles! Sonar contact as well! Identified as SS-N-22 'Sunburns'! Brining CIWS systems to bear!" Wolf's Commander Shaw called out, he had been looking over the shoulder of the radar technician. As he practically ran over to the weapons chiefs, Wolf's Marshall Decker was brining the battle group to readiness.
"Flag to battle group, inbound missile attack, re-direct CAP and fire on my order!" Placing the handset back down, Decker kept silent as the well trained crew of the Fell carried out their duties. As the Cromwell II fire control system began working out firing solutions for both the airborne and seaborne weapons. With the powerful processing suite onboard the Longsword-class the firing solutions were transmitted to both the entire battle group and the forty INF-2000 Interceptors flying above the battle group. However there was to be another complication.
"I am picking up three AWACS, just activated their main array radars!"
"Are we tracking any missile heading towards us from that direction?" Asked Shaw.
"No sir, no missile as of this moment"
"Keep an eye out then, but concentrate on the Parilisan missiles!"
“Aye aye, skipper! Weapons, battle group and CAP have firing solutions”
“All weapons fire! Flag to battle group fire!” Decker yelled over the battle net.

With the entire battle group linked up in one system, it took less then two seconds to transmit the data across it. The battle group responded almost immediately after the command to fire was given, the jets of fire streaking from the VLS and SAM launchers on the ships. First to open fire were the Type 23 Frigates, launching there GWS-27 Sea wolf AAMs towards the Parilisan missiles, next was the Ticonderoga class cruisers launching their own rolling airframe missiles to the cloud of anti-missile fire. Finally the Fell made its voice clear, adding volleys of LY4031 interceptor missiles, from both is port and starboard arrays. The coup de grace for the Parilisan missiles was delivered in the form of missile launched from forty INF-2000 interceptors vectoring in above the missiles.

The missiles collided 30km away from the battle group, the resulting explosion was spectacular to observe. The large amount of anti-missile fire had completely destroyed the incoming Parilisan missiles before they had even entered CIWS range. The crew of the CIC let out a small sigh of relief as they believed the threat was over, there were sorely mistaken. With all there time put into concentrating on the Parilisan missiles, any chances of detecting the L39.Hs early had gone out the window. The first sign the battle group got was when they appeared on their radar screens.
“Missile contact! Forty seconds out! Cromwell II bringing CIWS to bear.”
Decker cursed loudly and activated his link to the battle group again. “Flag to battle group fire at will, take those bastard missiles down!”

The skies surrounding the skies of the battle group lit up like a forth of July celebration, as all 164 35mm naval auto cannons onboard the Fell opened fire simultaneously, the Cromwell II battle management system guiding each shot. Due to the increased reaction times provided by the Cromwell II BMS, the rest of the battle group opened up much faster then possible. The 30mm CIWS mounts of the two Marshall-Class aircraft carriers added their own burning tracers into the air. The skies above the battle group was full of flak and tracers as the CIWS tried desperately to kill all of the incoming missiles. It was inevitable though, missiles would break through. In this case three of the L39.Hs broke through the wall of flak and tracer fire, two were still on course for the Fell whilst one had been knocked of course and had re-acquired the WHS Carlson one of the Marshall class aircraft carriers. One last lucky shot from one of the auto cannons knocked one of he L39.Hs slightly off course, this missile detonated as it passed the side of the ship, destroying 36 of the naval auto cannons and damaging the VLS cells. The other missile shot straight for the superstructure, cutting through the armour at the base of the superstructure and detonating, causing a massive tear in the side of the ship.

The CIC crew had been knocked to the ground by the blast, Decker lay on the floor limp and un-responsive a large cut on the side of his head. Wolf’s Commander Shaw came round to find the CIC full of smoke, the crew sprawled on their consoles or on the floor. Clambering up to his feet, he managed to shake some of the crew of the large CIC to their senses. Coughing loudly as he yelled over the sound of secondary explosions from the WHS Carlson “Get on the horn to damage control, we need to put this fire out before it gets anywhere near the magazines.” The scared sailor snapped a half salute and ran off to a free comms station and began contacting the damage control teams. As more of the crew came round, teams of EMTs came in to the CIC through a side door and began checking the crew for major injuries, there were multiple broken bones and the majority of the crew had a cut of some sort, however they just got up and carried on with their jobs, subduing the pain with jabs of morphine. As Shaw passed between them getting an assessment on the crew, the ship and the battle group as a whole he noticed Decker being carried out of the CIC in a body bag as the EMTs walked solemnly to the ships sick bay. A black fire burnt in Shaw and the CIC crew now, the deaths of so many onboard the Carlson as the missile had hit straight through its flight deck and into the forwards magazine, sending the ship up in an giant fireball. However every man and woman in the military had the utmost respect and adoration for their leaders, the Wolf Marshalls, those four people commanded the respect of the entire nation, they would do anything for them and seeing one of them dead caused a spark of anger and hatred which none of them could suppress. Shaw was humbled slightly by the fact that he had command of the battle group now and that all of these men’s lives were in his hands.

“Flag to the battle group, cease all offensive fire, withdraw CAP to the vicinity of the battle group. Keep defensive armaments active and prepare to leave the AO. All planes belonging to the Carlson flight group are to fly as far as they can and we will try and find a place for you to land.” The CIC crew looked shocked especially after the Marshalls Death. Shaw knew he could face a mutiny if he didn’t play this right. “The Marshalls death has us all baying for blood, however we must pull back and regroup, we have pilots without a carrier, we have a gaping whole in the side of our ship and we need to bury our leader. We will be back to make these ODECON bastards pay dearly, if it wasn’t for the need to return the Marshalls body I would reduce Exengrad to rubble here and now. We will return have no fear!” The crew of the CIC remained silent, yet he knew they were on his side as they all went back to their tasks with increased vigour. Shaw knew he could leave them to do their jobs, he picked up the radio handset that Decker had held just previously, setting it to broadcast to all of the ODECON, CIS and other fleets in the area.
“This is Wolf’s Commander Shaw, acting CinC of battle group Fell, we are beginning to withdraw in the interest of preserving the lives of the Wolf Hold and Nachmere fleets, if we detect a single missile launch we will retaliate with extreme force and reduce Exengrad to rubble under weight of missile fire. Battle group Fell out”

The battle group was indeed withdrawing as the Fell still spewing smoke began to turn the rest of the battle group following it. The communications suite intercepted the Void Templarian message and passed a copy on to Shaw, “Too damned late! However at least they came, unlike the rest of our supposed allies” Shaw said to himself, as he replied personally to the Void Templar.

"Hmph. Is that so." The Admiral had already authorised an extra serving of rum for the seamen, and his officers had a banquet fit for a royal occasion being prepared in the mess. For those unlucky enough to be on duty, their meals would be brought to them at their station where possible.

"Ensign, relay this message..."

"Commander Shaw, considering the situation you are in and the luck you have allowing your fleet to leave, now is not the time to make idle threats. I wholeheartedly suggest you make full speed for the North Sea lest your quick tongue find you in further hot water." A pop was heard, and a clinking of glasses - champagne had been released on the bridge. "Godspeed, Commander, and goodbye." The beginnings of a cheer, then silence.

The celebration was short-lived, before business was back to priority. Damage control, and the assessment of casualties was the order of the day, along with the preparation of many reports to both ODECON and to Admiralty Command.

We find it a good sight to see nations calling for peace for once instead of war. We have contacted the Wolf Hold Government and urged them to accept your offer. We also wish to inform you that we are putting our Navy on High alert. We assure that it is mearly a pre-cautionary measure, taking into consideration the dangerous situation. As Parilisa is an ODECON member, we offer to help with the damage caused by the Wolf Holds missile attack and to pay any compensation for the civilian casulaties on the Wolf Holds behalf.

We have kept ourselves informed of the situation through a variety of sources. With the information we have, we recommend that you accept the Leistungi offer to sort out a peace settlement. If there are any conditions you have before you will attend, inform us through the secure lines of communications between our nations, and we will try to meet them. We also wish to assure that we have our Navy on high alert and will, if necessary, help you militarily if it comes to it.

We feel it necessary to state that war has always been the last thing on the minds of the leadership in ODECON; indeed, the sheer number of meetings in the halls and conference rooms across the alliance and in the headquarters has been astonishing, all dedicated to cross-party organisation and co-operation in pursuit of peace. We have always maintained that war is a last resort, and that shots should only be fired when absolutely necessary. Naturally, this can all have been avoided had necessity not been forced upon us.

OOC: VT; we've decided on peace OOCly, so there's no need to enter another fleet. That would, after all, only make things worse and you would struggle to get past Salazland's closure of the Baltic.
OOC: Bugger. I always arrive too late, heh.

To: Approaching Void Templar battle group
From: Wolf’s Commander Shaw, Acting CinC of Battle group Fell

We are glad we have reinforcements, however the recent battle has left the 3rd in command of The Wolf Hold dead and we need to withdraw so we can return his body for a proper funeral. We would appreciate if your fleet could provide escort for both our fleet and our ally Nachmere as we witdraw from the battle zone

To: Wolf's Commander Shaw
From: Admiral Varlam

Sorry we didn't arrive here earlier, commander, and our condolences on the loss of your 3rd Marshall. We'll escort you out of here.
---
A number of CFA-44 interceptors were launched, and headed over to the Wolf Hold and Nachmere fleets while the fleet manouvered into position, main arsenals inactive but the decks still buzzing with life. The 5 dreadnought's main guns stared suspiciously at the possible hostiles, but stayed well out of firing range.

“Have a comfortable journey Commander Shaw.” Said Amherst into the radio. Although Shaw would not be able to see the grin on his face he would almost certainly be able to detect the hint of delight in his sarcastic tone. “And as my Adenian ally has pointed out, a ship in surrender is not the best ship to be making threats against the innocent of Parilisa.”

“Gentlemen,” he cried to the officers in the mess. “The bastards are withdrawing. ODECON was a little too heavy for them. I think they lost an officer; the idiot who sent the signal was an acting leader. A glorious day for Parilisa!”

“Glorious indeed!” said Captain Brandt. “A spot of damage, but minimal lives lost in the fleet and maximum damage done to the foe. I advise you to withdraw our fleet to the edge of our national waters, so as to avoid escalating the situation any further.” There was a hum of agreement from the several other men and women in the room.

“Yes, send the order for the fleet to withdraw a little. I had better be getting to Prezdorf to issue a report to the Emergency Defence Council. And you should send a message to Exengrad, Brandt, tell them the conflict is over and security can be reduced for a while. Lieutenant Cullmann, tell the men of Invincible that they shall be drinking extra tonight. Tell them that Parilisa thanks them for their admirable courage in the face of a threat.”

Brandt and Cullmann went to their duties whilst another officer scurried to get in touch with a smaller vessel to take Amherst back to shore. Amherst himself sat at the table with a weary sigh, taking of his hat and placing it in front of him.

“What will this mean, sir?” asked Lieutenant Drewes. “What will this mean for Parilisa?”

“Bring me some wine and take a seat Lieutenant.” Said Amherst with a smile. The Lieutenant was young, but he had shown great courage and ability. “This will mean that Parilisa will be on high security for a while. War seems unlikely; not even the most deluded and ignorant of international leaders would start a war against ODECON. But we must be vigilant, because war is a possibility. We will avoid it, most certainly, but we cannot deny that it is a reality we may have to face.”

“The EDC will be taking defensive measures, of course sir.”

“Most certainly. The DEFCON level has been raised and the EDC called in Prezdorf. We will be purchasing more weapons, repairing our fleet, organising coast guards and probably calling up emergency troops.” Replied the Admiral.

“A war footing, with no war?”

“War is a reality…” the Admiral paused. “What is that?” There was a sound coming from the ship, like a collection of tuneless voices united in some semblance of a song. Amherst stood, placing his cap on his head again, and opened the door.

“For he’s a jolly good fellow, for he’s a jolly good fellow,
For he’s a jolly good fellow, our Admiral Amherst.
Our Admiral Amherst, Our Admiral Amherst,
For he’s a jolly good fellow, for he’s a jolly good fellow,
For he’s a jolly good fellow, our Admiral Amherst.”

As Amherst walked onto the deck a great cheer went up from the sailors.

“Now now, less of that ladies and gentlemen. We’ll have a cheer instead for ODECON; Brittanican Adenia, Leistung, Salzland…” He continued to list the nations who had come to Parilisa’s aid in the unfortunate battle. “Without whom there would be no victory. Come, a cheer.”

The sailors of Invincible lined the port and starboard sides of the ships and saluted their allies on all sides. Soon other ships of the fleet, including those who had been injured, began to follow suit and as Amherst shouted “Hip-hip” a great “Hooray” spread across the fleet.

A bunch of survivors from one of the sunken Sutfen destroyers floats/drives over (With the Landing craft) over and offers 20 cases of Vodka and a tow if the Sortmark fishing boat will carry the rest of the Sutfen to shore....

A group of fishermen were gathered around the jury-rigged mast, watching the sail. There wasn't much else to do since the boat was moving at about three miles an hour - at this rate they might reach a shore within a week or two.

At least there were no more missile tracks streaking past overhead, or fighter jets. Then, one of the fishermen stood and pointed with an excited exclamation at a slow-moving dot, which gradually resolved itself into the shape of a boat as it came closer.

One hairy blond fisherman stood and yelled at the approaching boat.

"Terveh!"

"Привет? O.... Спасибо?" another queried, managing to horribly mangle the pronunciation.

A third cautiously added,

"Antiksi? Missäon Veliki Novgorod? Holmgardr?"

in a questioning voice.

However when the foreigners held up cases of vodka, all hesitation vanished, and the men were quickly welcomed on board and surrounded by grinning, bearded old fishermen who quickly relieved them of the drinks while pouring out a torrent of Finnish, Karelian and the occasional bit of mangled Russian.

Meanwhile as the Parilisan ship hailed the Sortmarkers, one fisherman noticed words coming from the radio and blinked in surprise. He banged it once or twice to stop it hissing, then said, "Привет? Привет?"

The Parilisans would hear more of a static-filled screech, though, with those words barely audible through it. The radio was old.

OOC: Bit late but this is almost a reference post in case of any follow up conflicts that might up up in the region involving ODECON.

IC:

HMB Port Wychwood, North West Stevid

The largest fleet the Holy Empire had put together during peacetime for nearly twenty years made speed with its support group fleet out of Port Wychwood and was heading for the Baltic Seas. The ships had seen action themselves since the Golden War of Succession but time hadn’t aged them badly as the gleamed in the morning sun almost as knew as they were when they had rolled off the naval production lines. The Empire was still highly militaristic what with Greater Dienstad still not completely stable even this long after the war that had engulf the entire eastern region, new ships, support tankers, tanks, aircraft- all still being mass produced to a fine quality. The quality in the ships in the Royal Navy task force was visible for all to see for many miles.
The flagship was gargantuan, a true monolith of power and could project this power both visually and physically through firepower. The largest class of ship in the fleet, the Farseer class Supercapital, was leading the task force that numbered of two hundred ships all bound for the Baltic. The ship itself was the first of her batch, the HMS Farseer and it was her first deployment to any hot zone. In fact the Empire had never sent a Supercapital into a hot zone until now, not less and actual active war zone through fear of actually losing the vessel to enemy fire due to the amount of fire she would soak up during combat. But what with the piracy activity dieing down in the Baltic and the conflict involving The Wolf Hold and her allies verses the power of ODECON (of which Stevid is a member), the chance of hostile engagements had fallen and thus prompted the Admiralty to actually send in a large fleet to provide Parilisa additional protection coupled with a Supercapital ship.

Stevid had actively participated in the war despite pressure from ODECON members to do so, a Stevidian Admiral who used to be the First Sea Lord was head of ODEFLE and ODEFLE and ODECON security offices being located in Stevid also put the government under due pressure- but non interference seemed to have been the correct tactic. The government had thought and suggested to ODECON that the presence of a huge ODEFLE/Stevidian fleet would have brought more countries to Wolf Hold’s cause. Stevid could have taken on the job single handily and would probably have won due to the sheer size and strength of the military. But fighting on multiple fronts and escalating the situation would have brought Baltic region to its knees. ODECON forced a ceasefire and a broader conflict was avoided. Now was a better time, a safer time, to bring in the fleet and provide and iron wall of security that no nation would dare take on. Coupled with the HMS Farseer were several fleet carriers and a few light carriers. With them was the Empire unique class of vessel the Command Battleship and with them too were escort cruisers, destroyers and frigates. Several specialised classes were also present as well to add more spice to the fleet. Not one, not two, but three Defiler Class Command and Control cruisers were with the fleet providing unparalleled radar cover, sonar imaging, electronic warfare and fire control weapons co-ordination, and interfleet and external communications. It was probably the best informed and high-tech naval fleet at sea in the entire world. With them were several Hanover Class frigates providing unique electronic jamming and anti-missile protection; and finally there were four Dweller Class destroyers equipped with state of the art space tracking systems and anti-satellite missiles designed for knocking over enemy satellites be they military, civilian or defunct.

The fleet was huge and it was impressive. Equipped for anything and everything, even amphibious assault carriers were in the mix to give the fleet an infantry and armour ground attack element. Multipurpose in every way and it was all bound for Parilisa waters in case ODECON enemies tried their luck again. This time the Stevidian Royal Navy would be there and this time there would be no contest. ODECON was flexing is muscles and the Holy Empire represented two bulging biceps and the six pack. Stevid was ready for war and was certain no one would challenge either them or ODECON in the region again- those who did would soon regret it.

The landing craft had a motor and a reasonable amount of fuel. A rope was thrown over to the Sortmark boat. The real question however was... Why the heck were 20 cases of Vodka even onboard a Sutfen ship? (Sutfen ships you see, were completely dry.) Infact, prior to the spotting of the Sortmark ship the discovery of the Liquoer cases would have simply been to throw them overboard.

When the rope was tied off, the Sutfen in the water climbed up aboard the Sortmark ship and safely out of the water. Vodka was given to the Sortmarkers while the Sutfen began towing the fishing boat, and all the Sutfen survivors in addition to the Sortmarkers.... Out of the battle area while the Sortmarkers seemed to fall in love with the twenty cases of Vodka the Sutfen were physically incapable of drinking.
