OOC: I figured that since my military is coming into play more often than it has in the past, I should make a seperate factbook for it, as Parsilia and Telvira have done.

Please do not post any comments regarding it here. If you have comments or suggestions, please either PM me or TG me. Thank you.

Early History:

The Federal Armed Forces has existed in its more-or-less modern form since 1892, when General Thomas Filie founded the Federation from the remains of the old Fanboyist Empire. Filie created the Federation in its modern form, though Morocco and the Ukraine would not be brought into the Federation until the Wars of Defense.

The Nationalist Army, a multi-national force that was used to forge the Federation, was the forerunner of the Federal Armed Forces. As the name suggests, the Nationalist Army was composed largely of land forces distributed between the two continents that functioned more or less seperately. Naval components would not find their way into the Armed Forces until 1884. When the Federation was proclaimed by Filie in 1892, the Nationalist Army became the Federal Armed Forces, and was to become the major defensive force of the Federation.

When the FFNAT was finally founded, the FAF had two major branches: the Federal Army and the Federal Navy. The Federal Navy has always generally been the weaker of the two. At this early stage in the FAF's development, the Federal Army was organized primarily at the Regimental level, wherein a regiment comprised 1600 men. The Federal Army could, in times of war, field up to 180 regiments. The Federal Navy comprised three major fleets at the time: the High Seas Fleet, the Gulf Fleet, and the Medditerranean Fleet, each one fielding the basic unit of power projection at the time: no fewer than 7 pre-dreadnought battleships each.

As the Wars of Defense began during the regime of Richard Giles, the Federal Navy was at its strongest: each of now four fleets (High Seas, Gulf, Medditerranean, and Baltic) fielding 9 post-dreadnought battleships were ready for immediate action. However, the long lasting wars, which would span the regime of three Federal leaders, would utterly debilitate the navy, as the heyday of dreadnoughts passed and the fleet failed to modernize, and its capital ships succumbed one by one to combat or mechanical failures. This is the main reason for the rather sorry shape of the Federal Navy today, with mixed modern and obsolete ships, undermanned, and not meant for any type of expeditionary capacity.

The Federal Army, however, has little but a good history. The Army began as a principally infantry force, as even its cavalry functioned as mounted rifles/dragoons, dismounting to fight. The artillery was generally viewed as a supporting arm, though this was to change during the Wars of Defense. As the Wars began, the Federal Army found itself overextended, and suffered severe setbacks, until the number of units was increased, and the main strategic/operational force was shifted to the Divisional level in 1915. With 50 divisions in action at the dawn of 1920, and with early tank and more mobile artillery coming into play, (and with early aerial combat), the FA was developing into a more combined arms force. Two principal division types existed: the armoured divisions, and the regular divisions. Armoured at this early stage, rather than designating units with tanks, rather indicated the presence of Federal "shock troops" who were meant to launch truely heavy assaults. As the late 20's passed and the mid '30s rolled around, however, larger bodies of tanks were integrated into the ADs (Armored Divisions) and they became truely deserving of their designation. From this point foward, the FA would see nothing but success in the Wars of Defense. Propelled-guns, rocket artillery, improved tanks, and integrated air corps turned the Federal Army into a formidable force, which remains largely unchanged at a fundamental level to this day.

When the Wars ended for good in the early '80s, and the FA helped an ambitious young general named Steven Grimmeberger spell the death of the Patricianate government, and a new era of social dominence for the FAF emerged, as well as renewed emphasis on discipline and, as a result of Grimmeberger's anti-Communist policies, a shift to counter-insurgency, which has become the forte of the non-shock troop Federal Infantry. Through multiple insurgencies, the Federal Army has reigned supreme, quelling each with remarkable swiftness and a precision uncommon in conventional armies. With the end of the Civil War in the early 90's, the what is now considered the historical period of the FAF came to a close, and so that is where our history lesson will end.

The Federal Army:
"You can run, but you'll just die tired."
-Unofficial Motto, Federal Army

Modern Organization

The main operational/strategic unit of the Federal Army is the Division. Operations are generally carried out on a battalion level. The highest permanent formation level is the Army. Armored Divisions are named for famous generals or warriors, while infantry divisions always carry the name of the region that the majority of recruits hail from. There is a disproportionate German, Croat, Deep Southern and Penn American population in the army. Roughly 375 divisions are maintained, one in three being an armoured division, and only a third of all divisions being maintained at "active" during peacetime. A further 33% are maintained as "active reserve" and the final third being "inactive reserve." All can be considered "combat-ready" within three weeks of a mobilization order.

Formations and their CO rank is as follows:

11 men - Squad - Sergeant
55 men - Platoon - 1st Lieutenant
110 men - Company - Captain
440 men - Battallion - Major
1760 men - Regiment - Sgt. Major
25,660 men - Division - Major General (Note: an armoured division will have 250 MBT's and 24,900 panzergrendadiers.)(all divisions have 36 attached propelled howitzers, and other artillery, in 3 artillery battalions)
151,800 men, 252 MBTs (4 IDs, 2 ADs)(regular) - Corps - Col. General
455,400 men, 756 MBTs (3 Corps) - Army - Field Marshal

The Federal Regular Infantry
"Into the breach once more!"
-Unofficial Motto, Federal Infantry

The infantry is by far the most prevalent and strongest part of the Federal Army (being 3.3 million strong). Counter-insurgency has a special focus placed on it like in few other nations. The standard issue weapon is the Stalwart Arms K29 assault rifle. The standard sidearm is the Colt Combat Commander. "Dragonhide" body armor is the norm for infantry body protection. The SH-41 is the standard helmet, with communication equipment built in, offering solid all around protection, and with anchor points for a gas mask. Most Federal Regular Infantry are mechanized at a squad level.

Panzergrenadiers
"You sorry bastards are fucked!"
-Unofficial Motto, Panzergrenadiers

"Join the Panzers! Meet new people! Learn how to kill them at least 23 different ways! Maul the enemies of the Federation!"
-Recruiting Poster, Panzergrenadiers and Federal Armored Forces

The Panzergrenadiers of a Federal Armoured Division are the successor forces to the Federal Shock Troopers of early in the Wars of Defense. The Panzergrenadiers
are selected for exceptional toughness, marksmanship, and intelligence. The Panzergrenadiers are issued the FN SCAR assault rifle, rechambered to the 7.22mm round and modified to a telescopic stock. Panzergrenadiers generally still carry sword bayonets as last-ditch weapons, in addition to the standard knife bayonet on the SCAR. Grenade-launchers are a standard attachment on the standard longarm. Panzergrenadiers are issued "dragonhide" body-armor, as well as kevlar-reinforced camo overshirts. The upper-legs, shins, feet, and upper arms are all protected by kevlar-reinforced equipment, including more "dragonhide" on the upper arms and upper legs. The SH-44 (Stahlhelm, Type 44) is heavily reinforced (in tests, the SH-44 withstood a 9mm pistol round at 100 yards), in addition to containing communication gear and a place for a gas mask to attach to the helmet itself (for extra attachment security). Panzergrenadiers are all mechanized at the squad level. The Panzergrenadiers are generally considered the elite of Federal infantry forces.

Armored Forces

The primary MBT of the Federal Army is the Lamonian LAIX Arms M-21A1 Valkyrie MBT, which has given excellent service in the Defesian campaign and the Oil Province Campaign, as well as during Operation Inquisition, Operation Red Purge II and Operation Red Purge III. Talk of a planned MBT, produced by Innsbruck Armour Works are thus far unsubstantiated, and have thus far been denied by the Federal government. An Armored Division maintains 250 MBTs in six battalions.

Artillery

All divisions have attached "Artillery Battalions" with propelled howitzers and modular rocket artillery, usable with AA, AT, and other rockets. 36 propelled howitzers and 72 rocket artillery platforms are distributed to each division for support.

Military Education:

There are two primary academies for the Federal Army, one in Tuscaloosa (for America), and one in Zagreb (for Europe). An additional two are planned for Jerusalem and Inneville. The Army Academies are considered among the finest educations available in the Federation, and are especially prided on their engineering schools.

There are two naval academies, one in Ghent (Europe) and one in St. Henry (America). Again, the Naval Academies are considered excellent higher education.

Paramilitary Organizations (Note: we WILL NOT be counting Scouting organizations within the Federation!):

The Grey Coat Militia

The Grey Coats are an innovation of the Grimmeberger regime: they were unheard of during the Patricianate. Grey Coats are famous for their intense resourcefulness, having defeated relentless enemies while using out of date, second-hand equipment. The Grey Coat uniform lacks any proper armor, though a few have rigged flack-jackets for themselves (ineffective, to say the least). The uniform consists of a grey great coat (hence the name), an FN M1949 rifle, two "Hitler's Zipper" grenades (stick grenades), shin-high boots, reinforced gloves, trousers (often enough blue jeans). The Grey Coat artillery units tend to use old AT guns, towed howitzers, and the like. MG42's are the standard SAW.

The Greys have an excellent service record, having put down every major rebellion against the Grimmeberger regime to date, suffering fairly low losses in each campaign.

The State Special Police (SSP) - The SSP is the Federation's "secret" police force, though the designation "secret" is misleading: the government officially acknowledges its existence, and keeps very detailed records of its activities, just in case. The SSP is headed up by James Derkins. The SSP generally only responds to the threat of true rebellion and violent riots, while protests are allowed to commence peacefully (thought the SSP will usually keep an eye on their leaders, just to make sure). Due to the relative freedom in the Federation (for a dictatorship), the SSP is generally only used in taking down the more dangerous criminals: treasonous government agents, crime lords, slavers, mass murderers or serial killers, or particularly dangerous revolutionaries or dissidents (high potential to start mass rioting or revolution is the definition of "dangerous".) They also perform an espionage role in foreign countries where delicacy is required.

The SSP has largely disintegrated at this point because of the revolt of many of the fascist elements of the force (which happens to make up roughly 86% of it) as well as Derkins himself. It is estimated that only 12% of SSP personnel reported for duty as of April 11th, 2009.

True, but this one is only for my military. I already had one for the rest of the country.
