History

The history of modern-day Reijvajik can be broken up into three main sections: The Empire, The One and One Year War, and Modern Reijvajik.

The Empire of Reijvajik

It was predominantly in the late 15th century that the Empire of Reijvajik began to have any influence in its region at all: before, being a small collection of city-states and nomadic tribes-people. Under the reigns of Ovarsky II and Ovarsky III, Reijvajik underwent sweeping changes in its economy and its civil rights status - what had, before, been essentially an anarchy was swiftly and mercilessly reformed with a large police force; bringing a Reijvajik into a period which would last ninety-two years, known as "The Great Void." The economy, on the other hand, became noticeably less regulated; and instead of having a positive effect, life became greatly harsher. As one philosopher, a man by the name of John Auhvis, stated,

Rotting, fly-ridden gristle was sold at the markets, replacing the physical state of the regular cuts of meat, and yet the cost remained largely the same.

During these times, the tension between the growing poor population and the aristocratic noblemen grew, until finally, on August 11th, 1582, a riot erupted at the palace gates in the capital of the time, Tabatha.

The One and One Years War

The One and One Years War is named so because it lasted for exactly one year and one day before the ruling monarchy was overthrown. The "Rvolptn" [or Revolution, as it was called] was lead by a slave by the name of Yuring Arcus. A brave and spirited man, Arcus lead a mob of around two thousand militia to the gates of the Verne and proceeded to attack it. Caught by surprise, a small platoon of around 100 was sent to defend the walls of the castle, but it was obviously too little too late. The Rvolptn easily overwhelmed the guard, and stormed the Verne, and setting it alight.
Over the next few months, the militiamen raided various government bases, gaining support in the process. In all, around seven hundred were killed in battle, however, with the loss of the main centre of government and several military bases, the Empire was unable to rebuild, and the Republic of Reijvajik was founded at the Town Hall of the new capital - Wysken.

Modern Reijvajik

Up until 1866, Reijvajik consisted of only two islands: the "Big Island", on which the economic hubs of Wysken and Whitehall are situated, and the "Little Island"; housing the old capital of Tabatha. However, an absolute collapse in the economy of the neighbouring islands of Dwarne lead to the Republic of Reijvajik acquiring the land on June 17th, 1866 at the signing of the Treaty of Dwarne. Over the next thirty years, large amounts of government funds were pumped into the small colony of islands in order to stablise its economy and promote growth; although success was initially limited. Although the vast majority of the inhabitants of Dwarne today enjoy a good standard of living, the area still remains one of the lesser developed regions of Reijvajik, which shows in the population of its most populous city, John Symonds Creek: a mere 86,438.

In 1966, a military coup d'état was staged after the election of Meretha Don Savlesi, who, after entering office, attempted to use the police to assassinate several major people in the ministries of Defense and Social Welfare, and through corruption and scare tactics passed laws banning homosexuality and marijuana, among others. In a cooperated effort of parts of the National Police Force, the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th and 11th Battalions of the Reijian Army, and the Reijian Air Force, Savlesi's office was stormed. He was arrested and tried for high treason, however committed suicide before sentencing. A year later, another election was called by special legislature, with the longest running President to date, Sylvester Aninston, being elected, and staying in office until 2006.

Government

- President: Olimar Seukle-Vian Kanbrinsky
- Representative of Defense: Ardon Wyjsten
- Representative of Foreign Relations: Micahel Vaughan
- Representative of Social Policy: Maria Davis
- Commander in Chief: Whelks Smith-Ivanhart

Reijvajik has maintained a minimal government since its founding, today consisting only of three ministries: Defense, Foreign Relations and Social Policy. The head of state, the President (Olimar Seukle-Vian Kanbrinsky), is chief of the ministries of Defense and Foreign Relations, however has no regular duties besides signing laws into practice. Each of the ministries, instead, is usually represented by an aptly named "Representative", elected every two years.
While statewide education and healthcare are now all private, the Ministry of Social Policy still somewhat funds them via what are called "Supplements" - handouts of money distributed to eligible citizens at the beginning of each year to help pay for these services.
The Reijian Constitution has been written twice: the original was scrapped for a new, stricter one, which regulated the size of the government as well as restricting the types of policies which may be put foward.
Elections are held every two years, in which the President and Representatives are elected. Another round of elections, named "Sub-elections", are held every five years, in which advisers are chosen. Participation in both is optional.

Geography

Map of Reijvajik.

Reijvajik consists of seven islands, named, in order of size, Grynwich, Sabine, Warne, Dyveri, Saneiaens, Ruble and Tomophos.
The majority of the land in Reijvajik is tundra, which covers around 75% of all land mass. Glaciers cover a further 10%. About 84% of the land is vegetated.
Of the roughly 1,480 species present in Reijvajik, only three are native land mammals: the Dubouarsky's Sheep, the Arctic Wolf and the Sabine White Rat. There are only about 800 known insect species: an extremely low number, though not surprising when the country's unforgiving climate is taken into consideration. Too, there are no reptiles, and only one amphibian: the Aninston Frost Frog, named after former president Sylvester Aninston, who had a passion for ice swimming.
Vegetation in Reijvajik consists primarily of grasslands, grazed on by livestock. The island of Dyveri is famous for its autumn colours, in which thousands of the native maple Acer roiss turn red. Often, snow will fall before the leaves detach from the trees, creating an effect known by locals as "icing sugar." The highest point in Reijvajik, also on Dyveri, known as Blak Myse [Lit. Blood Mountain] is named for this phenomenon.
The coastline of Reijvajik is usually formed by sharp cliffs, which often create fjords, the largest being Newark Sound, near Everton Pass.
Reijvajik is subpolar, with the rocky mountain area around Vaughan being the coldest. The highest recorded temperature is +28.6ºC, the lowest being -41ºC. The average temperature of the capital, Wysken, is around 18ºC in summer and down to 22ºC in winter.

Demographics

The people of Reijvajik are predominantly of Nordic descent - the first inhabitants were believed to have been a fleet of sailors who were blown by a freak storm to the around Tabatha. Population growth in the last five years averaged about 4.8%.
In a survey in 2008, 11.8% of Reijians were born overseas. Around 4.7% had foreign citizenships.
The native language of Reijvajik is Ancient Reijian, a language believed to have dated back to around 800 BC. It uses characters derived from the sounds of Old Norse, which today can be linked to most of the letters in the French alphabet. French and English are also official languages, and are taught in the secondary school system. Danish is also widely understood.
The majority of Reijians are atheist, with Judaism having the major part of the minority. The 2009 census revealed no Buddhists or Muslims to be living in Reijvajik permanently.

Military

The Military of Reijivajik is small and modernised. It consists of the Reijian Army (RJA), Reijian Navy (RJN) and Reijian Air Force (RJAF). The President assumes chief command during times of crisis; at other times, the Commander-in-Chief and Representative for Defense assume this role. The military currently has 490,000 in active duty. Service is voluntary, though conscription has been initiated in times of crisis.
The defense budget made up 7% of last year's budget, totaling just under $16bn Reijian Dollars.
