HISTORY

Arandea was once a colony of (Any nation feel free to claim that spot) Until it was granted independence in 1901 after a decade long period of unrest and demonstrations against colonial rule.

The First government of an independent Arandea was closly controlled by the mother country and was basically a puppet under a corrupt regime of President Franco Bravieur until he was overthrown in a military coup in 1909

A military junta controlled the country until 1902 when elections were to be held. The elections were then called off when another coup took place led by General Gregjour Liebedeck who ruled from 1902 to 1924 when he was assasinated by the military

Another military junta then ruled from 1924 to 1929 where the first ever elections were held but they were by no means fair.

Anthony Dinly rigged the first elections and his Arandean National Party dominated the government with an iron fist.
Anthony won the 1933 election and again they were rigged and the opposition were harrased and sometimes arrested.
In 1937 he once again won the election but this time declared himself president for life. In 1939 with foriegn support and funds the military staged yet another coup.

The Military rulers kept nuetral during ww2 but by 1945 it was clear General Anton Aliveras was the head leader who was really in charge.

The Aliveras dictatorship lasted till 1950 where he was assasinated with foriegn aide and multiparty democracy was installed by an international peacekeeping force.

The 1950 elections were reasonably free. And Halem Rivera was elected President.

The first 3 years were quite prosperous and free and then Rivera began sending the states money overseas. He was highly corrupt and he knew he had a lot to lose if he lost the election so he illegally extended his presidential term and the new elections were to be held in 1956.

During this time he began to get military generals on his side gave them priviledges until they were in the upper elite class. He was popular with the generals and so the military followed his orders with extreme loyalty and the opposition began to dissapear.

He won the 1956 elections with ease. in 1960 elections were banned and Halem Rivera was declared president for life. He had a steady the prosperous time ruling until 1978 when he died

The 70's saw massive economic problems. He left no clear successor and factionalism in his Patriotic Party began. To stop the country from ripping itself apart the military took over and disbanded parliament. the patriotic party fled and formed a rebel army and a civil war began in 1979 while the military tighten control.

The rebels were completly eliminated in 1984 and the outside world began to pressure the military to allow free elections. they held off until 1986.
General Murillio Riega won the first election with the support of the army so it was by no means fair. President Riega was a puppet for the old junta but the people had had enough of authoritarian government and in 1989 massive demonstrations and unrest took over the country

By July 1989 Port Antent was seeing extreme disorder. The Military and president Riega stood down and a new democratic constitution was introduced banning the military from participation in the government.

The first TRULY free elections took place in January 1990
It was won by Manuel Daristide.

His popularity was emense becuase he was a dissident of the military regime all through the 80's and the people believed he would bring Arandea into an era of peace and freedom.

The economy was still ravaged and extremly corrupt and the media was never fully free under Daristide and the government and even some within his ruling Arandean Democratic party feared a cult of personality was growing.

1994 the elections were won by Daristide but only just. He really began to tighten his control and the opposition were beginning to get harrased. The economy was still crumbling and stagnant

mass anti government demonstrations took place in 1998 at the news the elections would take place in 2000 and Daristide was pressured by foriegn governments to resign and that they would assist in his exile but NOT grant him political asylum.

On May 1st 1998 he agreed and then on the 4th May he changed his mind thats when the military threatened to topple him and so he fled the country with foriegn help. His Democratic party was put under new leadership but it lost the 1999 elections. insteat the elections were won by Pele Baleros and his Arandean Peaceful Progress Party

Useing his imense wealth and influence he changed the constitution to extend presidential terms to 5 years.

He won the 2004 elections in fair means. it was in his second term human rights began to suffer.

The media were discouraged from critisising Baleros and political opponents were intimidated or bribed to stay quiet or support him.

Violence has increased in the last months with reports of torture and even greater fear spreading around the country
