Riverstone Avenger Released

Blackhelm Confederacy

Recent conflicts with foreign powers have shown the Confederate government that reliance upon its wooden rockat stockpiles alone is not sufficient to protect the nations coastline from masses of enemy ships. The conventional missiles werefound to be easily shot down by CIWS and other anti-missile systems as they came close to the enemy. The solution to this was simple. A massively long ranged torpedo which would be able to dive under water, and avoid the systems used for regular weapons. Riverstone took their Cormorant missile, and adopted it to become the Avenger, which carries a CJ-1 torpedo.

The torpedo drops into the water at sixty kilometers away from the vessel, and makes its way to impact the target. This gives the missile enough distance to avoid oncoming anti-missile fire.

The Blackhelm Confederacy is expected to place an order for several thousand of these missiles, and the will be going on sale for $600,000 a weapon.

How is it guided in the sixty kilometres it travels under the water?

If I am correct, it sounds like this missile could be classified as an "Ordinance delivery Vehicle". I'm not sure about the terminology. But you could say, it's in the same idea as a n ICBM. the rocket launches and flies across the water at low level before dropping the Torpedeo...

And then, I'm also guessing the torpedeo uses a combination of Active/Passive sonar combined with a GPS guided gyro and navigation unit to get to the projected area of the enemy ship before it starts pinging to find the correct target.

Anti-ship torpedoes are a rather shallow-running type of weapon. Their higher than "Periscope Depth" for a submarine, which is required every 12 hours for the submarine to log it's position and to report it's "Alive" to the satellites. So I'm guessing it wouldn't be a major jump to satellite target a ship, and guide the Torpedo in before the torpedo activates it's active and passive units.

Does anyone know what I just said?

I follow, and the concept is sound. Just wasn't in the write up. That and the stated 'sixty km out' point is interesting, as many anti-missile systems engage at greater ranges than that, especially in NS.

So basically it's an ASROC that targets surface ships?

I was talking primarily of CIWS.

Yea, exactly.

[OOC: It's a sound concept; I, and many other old-timers, have had things like these for years. Well, not literally years in my case because SARN's only been in existence as an OOC entity for a couple of months, but they've definitely been used before, usually with some success.

Okay, occasionally someone comes up with something that drops a "stealth supercavitating" torp 250 km away from the target, which then dives to the "sea floor" and then curves back up when it's right under the keel (and is still somehow traveling 600 knots), but fortunately that doesn't happen often.]
