To stop the unstoppable - military advisors requested

Fehnmar
02-04-2009, 01:05
Three times over the last eighty years, the Republic of Fehnmar has gone to war with the Protectorate of Lyras. Each time we were defeated, each time more decisively than the last. Now, bereft of ideas with which this trend can be reversed, or at least respectably halted, the Republic seeks foreign military strategic and technological advisors, to answer what some have called the greatest military challenge in the world; halting the Lyrans in a land war, across a shared border.

We face one of the largest and best equipped militaries on NS, controlled by one of its foremost military minds. Any and all suggestions or offers are appreciated.

Here's some advice for free: You're no damn good at war. Seek peace.

RE: Military advisor request

After consultations with Executive Command, this office has ventured to offer a suggestion which, it has been determined, offers far and away the most effective advice for halting any military offensive.

Do not engage in offensive military action against the Protectorate, or its allies.

From the Department of Defense, Azure Road, Capital District, The Romulan Republic:

The Government of The Romulan Republic has observed your situation with interest. Given that your nation shares many ideals with ours, we are especially sympathetic to your situation. However, we are concerned about offering military assistance which would allow you to pursue an aggressive as opposed to a defensive policy, or which might draw the Republic into a broader conflict. However, we would be willing to consider negotiating a mutual defense pact, by which any aggression against one party would be considered aggression against both. Under such an agreement, we could provide military adivsors and equipment to your nation, but would not be drawn into a conflict in which you were the aggressor.

From the Department of Defense, Fourth and Central, Capital District, The Romulan Republic to the Protectorate of Lyras:

As you may soon be aware, the Romulan Republic has extended the possibility of a mutual defense pact to the Republic of Fehnmar. However, we wish to make clear that this is not intended as a hostile overture towards the Protectorate of Lyras. Any hypothetical pact would be a purely defensive arrangement, and would not be activated against your state unless Lyras was the clear aggressor.

I give you a parable.

A man walks up to a doctor and says...
"Doctor, it hurts when I do this. What should I do"

The doctor pondered a second and said.

"Don't do that"

End of Parable.

Well, it would seem, in general, that fighting a military cult sparta style country with unlimited resources and a huge population isent the best idea. Either that or get alot of allies and beat them by noumbers. Unfortunatly Lyras has many allies.

So, like others probably told you...Don't poke the lion.

Up to your old tricks again, Fehnmar? While the Empire doesn't (openly) assist in the petty conflicts of others, we don't see why we should sit back and have the Lyrans take the lions share. We'll send in the 93rd Artillery Division under the command of Commandant Fuller to prevent the Lyrans from succeeding in any counterattacks you may accrue in your brash little dust-up. They won't be yours to command, we'll simply keep them their to act as static defence. If we feel they are coming under unnecessary duress by either the Lyran's or your notoriously bossy high command, we observe the right to extract them as we see fit.

(P.S. - Oh, by the way, we've offered the same courtesy to the Lyran's with the 412th Artillery under Commandant Preczek, a good friend of Fuller's. Wouldn't want to be seen as playing favorites now, would we?)

ooc: your sending your troops to fight on both sides of the war?

Fight? Oh heavens, no, that would be silly. We'll let them fight as bloody a conflict as they like, without Imperial interference. However, we do have a number of economic agreements with both parties, and if their factories are all gone, then what a waste of Credits that would be... We're simply there to protect both nations civilian interests, they can use their armies to fight until every last soldier's breathing blood, for all we care.

OOC:
Lyras doesn't have civilian interests, last time I checked. He has no civilian sector at all, in the technical sense. He's more an army that's arrived somewhere, and decided to stay there inter-generationally, than a state in the conventional sense. Which I think is why Fehnmar is asking for advice.

Historically, when Fehnmar first fought Lyras, Fehnmar was bigger. Then Lyras took 25% of his land, and a chunk of Erukush's as well, making them very similar sizes. Then he lost a further slice. Then he had a secessionist rebellion in his south... which Lyras backed, leading to a third conflict. Which Fehnmar also lost.

Fehnmar, you've certainly set yourself up a fair challenge, that's all I can say.

Honored Fehnmar Republic. Will more respect than is apparently due, we see no reasonable hope for you to engage in and win an offensive millitary action at this time or in the near and forseable future. The evidence clearly indicates that the Fehnmar Republic is inferior to its enemy moth militarily and ecnomically at the current time, and thus cannot prevail in any offensive action, and must be prepared to suffer greatly to succeed in even a defensive action.

For the defense, we would recommend taking a stance of making it simply too costly for the Lyran military to invade your nation. Our best suggestion is to have enough weapons of mass destruction on hand to be able to fire them at major Lyran cities, especially political and industrial targets, as well as smaller theatre weapons of mass destruction that you can fire into the opposing army as it adavances. Biological and Chemical warfare agents might not be ill-advised here.

Should the advancing army actually cross your border in the face of such a thing, continuing the bombardment is certainly recommended, while also at the same time destroying anything your enemy might find useful as you retreat. While it's certainly painful, a destroyed factory or farm can be rebuilt afterwards, the important thing is to deny your enemy the use of it.
