Chief scientists log - CE 0XXX
It has been only a few days since we arrived on the Crystal planet, it is a unusual plane with a breathable atmosphere but void of life where we have landed. Initial tests have yet to come back but based on observation alone I can guess these crystals are more then it would appear. There green in appearance and some of them rise meters into the sky. In the area infected by the crystal we can’t find anything but crystal by digging. We suspect that the crystals are absorbing organic compounds from the surrounding area allowing them to grow.
Day seven
It’s now been six days since we landed on the planet, our base camp has been completely covered over by crystals. We have already been told help is on the way and to continue on research in the mean time. Test’s have shown these are no ordinary crystals, the posses qualities that defy all laws of both chemistry and biology. All matter, organic or not feed these crystals, several members of the team have inhaled microscopic crystals into there bodies and it seems to be having various effects on there bodies.
Day Nine
We’ve lost another four members of the team and the ones who fell ill first are getting worse. They are no longer able to communicate they just lye there all the time with there eyes open all the time. There skin has hardened to the point needles cant break the skin. Those of us still up and about are beginning to worry about what’s going to happen next.
Day Ten
The situation is worse then it would seem, the rescue party has informed me that we are now under a kilometre of crystal and the have began digging. On our side it seems that this illness is one hundred percent fatal with long term exposure. The ones who fell ill only three days ago just experienced the final phase. Many of us were there when it happened, her torso jerked up like as if she was in pain, then crystals grew all over her body over the course of two hours, consuming her before shattering with the lightest touch. It looked very painful but we seem to be not infected yet. We now wear full bio gear all day long. In hope that we can find a solution before it is to late, the psychological effects on all of us is almost at it’s limits of stress and anxiety.
Rescue Team Log - 14 days after last contact
After using high explosives in combinations with orbital strikes from the rescue fleet we have finally been able to reach the research out post. However when we arrived there was no one left alive, just bodies from those we thought survived. Something had killed them we can’t tell if it was each other or not but all of there bio suits had large cuts, slash marks and stab marks. Blood evidence on there suits suggests that they were all murdered by something or someone. We can’t find any evidence of life after recovering all the logs and information from the computers we left back to the fleet. As per protocol we left a high yield anti-matter bomb which destroyed the entire research base.
Present day - 15 days after last contact
The rescue fleet was preparing to leave orbit around the strange crystal planet as it had been called. Crystals now covered roughly 50% of the planet and was expanding by the day. Everything seemed normal enough despite the fact that the entire research team was gone, some murdered. On the bridge of the lead ship the officers were deciding what to do “Captain if I may be able to say these crystals do have similar properties to Dragon Crystals which power our ships, why don’t we try to get a harvest team in here to see if these can work to, the research teams documents show that just a small amount of this crystal could power a cruiser for just about two thousand years not to mention increase the power output of our weapons”
“It’s to dangerous, that crystal eats everything that goes near it, you saw what happened to that team down there”
“Captain, sensor contact, unknown entity”
“What!”
“Distance 20,000, its coming from the planet”
Before they could even respond to the situation a large crystalline creature emerged from the planet at high speed coming towards the fleet. The creature got closer to the ship and when it did it fired some sort of energy beam right into the hull causing a massive explosion. The ship rocked violently from side to side from the explosion, and then a ominous message was received by the ship
“Annihilate everything, destroy, everything will become one with us”
The fleets FTL quickly fired up and they got the hell out of there. However the damage was done and it would seem not just them but the entire galaxy was in danger of being consumed by this new crystalline life form which seemed to want nothing but destruction.
After the incident the damaged ship limped back to home port at the planet Zeffer in the mid rim territory. The planet it self had heavy strategic importance for the ZAFT forces as it was the location of one of ZAFT all important fleet yards. Once it reached Zeffer a report on the incident was given to the upper echelons of the military. The report had to many holes in it but it was disturbing for the higher ups “So your telling me this crystal is self aware and has now attacked one of our ships?”
“Yes sir, I am prepared to take full responsibility for allow a ship of the ZAFT navy to be damaged”
“Given the circumstances no punishment is in order for allowing your ship to be damaged, the situation was unexpected and unpredictable, tell me this though captain what do you think we should do?”
“I say full quarantine of the system to isolate this crystal”
“For once we are in agreement, dismissed”
Ninety Six Hours later
Quarantine line established twenty four hours ago
With the isolation of the system now in full effect nothing was to be allowed to enter or exit the system at all. At the far end of the system the frigate Thoroughbred was making its scans on its section of the line. Since the ship arrived everything was normal and it made the crew think nothing was actually there and it was all just a over reaction “Captain is there really something out there?” one of the bridge officers asked
“I’d like you to find something else that can punch a twenty meter wide hole into one of our ships”
“Very well sir”
“Sir something on sensors………..wait never mind must have been a glitch”
“A glitch? Can’t be……..Quick give me a full spectrum scan!”
“Aye” the crewmen said before getting to work. The captain suspected something was in fact there but he didn’t know what just yet. When the scan was complete a short time later the crewman at the sensors was alarmed “Sir there is something out there”
“I know that but what is it crewmen”
“But sir it started at about two hundred meters off the port bow but then…………. Sir something’s extended from it and is wrapped around the ship”
“What the hell!? Can we get it off with a main cannon shot?”
The captain then called down to one of the weapons control centres and asked them to target were the thing attached to the ship was coming from. Seconds later a blue beam came from the ship directed at what seemed like nothing but it hit something. The energy from the blast caused what ever it was to become disable again. It was some sort of crystalline structure dark green in colour with a tinge of red. All of a sudden a sound echoed through the ship, the sound of something trying to crush the hull “It’s trying to crush the ship? Set main battery to auto fire, set all missile to remote detonation and time it to a core overload,” the captain ordered. After that the few guns the ship had kept firing at the crystalline entity, they began to blast parts of it off little by little however it had already begun converting and absorbing the ships hull “Status!”
“No use sir we separated the link between us and the object but some of it is still attached to us and absorbing the hull it almost seems”
“Damnit!” the captain said smashing his hand down on the console near him “Never in my life would I expect to give this order, however XO transfer detonation commands to one of the drops ships, all hands abandon ship” he ordered. The entire crew was shocked that the order was given, many thought that there must have been a way. However his order was final and the crew began to evacuate the ship. The captain and several others escaped via three Heaven class drop ships in the hanger while the rest of the crew took escape pods. As they escaped the crystalline entity attacked and destroyed three escape pods. The others quickly sent out a distress call alert all nearby ships, the captain then initiated the ships self destruct. Just as the hull began to collapse in a brilliant explosion the ship went up and took the entity with it. Later on the crew was rescued, seven were confirmed dead out of the 32 member crew. However the entity was not gone after the situation had calmed down and every one was gone the small crystals left became active attracting each other and the surrounding debris to them. Within minutes it had assembled into a massive crystal ship which then went into hyper space towards some other system. When it emerged some time later it placed it self in a asteroid belt to let it self grow, and wait for a more tasty target to come by.
