Trenton Academy, 50 km from Osius City, CFUS

The new semester was beginning, the old students returning to meet up with friends and acquaintances, girlfriends and boyfriends and best-friends. The sea of uniforms was spectacular, the boys and girls in their respective red blazers and slacks or skirts for the girls. And dotted among them, equally gleeful, were boys with blue armbands on their shoulders. They seemed just like any other high school students. Unknown to outsiders, these were the Knights, those who took it upon themselves to guard and defend their school and classmates.

At a small courtyard on the rooftop of the library, two figures sat at a table, a tray of tea and biscuits arrayed before them.

"Hrm...I see some fresh faces," said one, a short, youthful seventeen year-old with glasses. His blue eyes shone clear as he looked down at the students, the wind rustling his blondish-brown hair as he sipped his tea.

"Yes, I have their dossiers with me," said a sterner, taller Japanese boy. His jet-black hair also ruffled as he stood and looked down, scanning the crowds with a keen eye.

"Colonel, please sit, I'm sure there's nothing to be too concerned about," said the other boy.

"Yes, Lord Trenton," the Colonel answered, taking his seat.

Meanwhile

James Curtis got ready for class like usual. After his morning run, he showered and got dressed, arraying out his uniform that he'd pressed the night before. He fixed his tie in the mirror, settling his blazer over his shoulders and working his arms through the sleeves. Next, he affixed the blue armband, a pair of crossed swords and a shield denoting his status as a Squire. He headed out the Squire Dormitory and headed off to class.

As he walked down the steps of Knight HQ (ooc: a building set aside and used exclusively for the Knights) he was roughly tackled from behind as an arm was thrown around his neck. He stumbled down the last few steps and turned to see his Knight, Captain Jason Finn, grinning like a madman.

"Ahh, sir?!" James bemoaned. It was their morning ritual, of sorts, and that was his usual greeting.

"Hiya, James!" Finn smiled jovially, finally letting go as they walked off to school together. He pulled out a lollipop, "Want one?"

"N-no, I'm good, sir," the Squire answered. Already, Finn had popped one in his mouth.

"Ready for the new semester, my chivalrous Squire?" he teased, pinching James' cheek.

"Sure, sir," James tried to smile.

Mikuru and her cousin Jerusha arrived in FUS in good time. And now their first day of school. Mikuru above all was looking forward to seeing Adela again. She went on and on about her to her cousin.

"You'll love Adela, she's sweet, kind, and..."

"Easy, Mikuru, you sound like your in love with this girl."

"She's like a sister."

"I know. Well I'm also excited to meet her."

"Hello?" he asked. "Ah, right, I forgot." He turned to Jason. "Sorry, I almost forgot, I'm escorting the Motokatan exchange kids today."

"Oh, right," Jason said. He threw an arm over his Squire's shoulders. "Hey, if there's any cute girls, make sure to get their numbers, okay?" he flashed a smile and a thumbs up. James excused himself and left Captain Finn to harass the trio.

"tell me did three large steel boxes get here okay" Jim asked as he held onto May while Tom went over to Ben

"Um, I did see a shipment," Jason became serious. When it came to business, Captain Finn was down-to-earth. "Captain Rushing with Materiel would know...but I think that's it." He leaned in close, "A new toy, perhaps?" he winked.

ooc: just so you know, since your char is a knight, he should know of capt. finn's playfulness, if not used to it.

Joshua Cloudao walked onto the Trenton campus and looked around. He was visibly impressed as he started walking around the school. It was obvious to people that he wasn't from the country, indeed; he didn't even know where he was from . He used a technique he had learnt while he was in grade school; hunched shoulders and bowed head, making him seem less threatening. Of course, it didn't work, as a large guy, about 18, walked over to him, grabbed him and shoved him against the nearest wall.
"All your money or I'll beat you,"said the guy, balling a hand into a fist. Josh just stared at him for a few seconds, then spat in his face. Naturally, this resulted in a punch to the gut and the call:"FIGHT!"

OOC: This comes from experience; some people will do this.

"Um, I did see a shipment," Jason became serious. When it came to business, Captain Finn was down-to-earth. "Captain Rushing with Materiel would know...but I think that's it." He leaned in close, "A new toy, perhaps?" he winked.

Joshua Cloudao walked onto the Trenton campus and looked around. He was visibly impressed as he started walking around the school. It was obvious to people that he wasn't from the country, indeed; he didn't even know where he was from . He used a technique he had learnt while he was in grade school; hunched shoulders and bowed head, making him seem less threatening. Of course, it didn't work, as a large guy, about 18, walked over to him, grabbed him and shoved him against the nearest wall.
"All your money or I'll beat you,"said the guy, balling a hand into a fist. Josh just stared at him for a few seconds, then spat in his face. Naturally, this resulted in a punch to the gut and the call:"FIGHT!"

"I see," Colonel Maeda said from their rooftop viewpoint. "I'll take care of it..." The second-in-command dialed his cellphone.

A firm hand landed on the shoulder of the assailant.

"Now then, that's enough," came a firm voice from behind. A couple of other Knights quietly dispersed the crowd before it grew. They flanked the two boys, ready to make it physical if necessary.

"Mr. Adams, let go of him now," said the lead Knight.

ooc2: sorry for taking liberty w. the name. btw, the students respect and fear the 'secret' brotherhood of the Knights because of their all-pervasiveness.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a coin, held it between his middle fingers, then walked up to the guy who had hit him and said:"Wanted some money? Here!" and with that, he punched him in the nose, breaking it and knocking him out. He then backed off and waited to have the shit beaten out of him.

"Pleasure to meet you," the leader said with a slight bow. "I'm Lieutenant Jeffries, these are Lieutenants Michaels and Dowds," the other two waved as he mentioned them. "For some reason, Lord Trenton wishes to speak with you. Will you come with us, please?"

JEffries led the way, his subordinate, Dowds, falling in step with them. Michaels stayed behind to help the unfortunate bully to the infirmary.

The elevator operated off of another key inserted into the panel, and it was soon moving upwards. The doors opened to the rooftop, where two figures were visible. They were sitting at a table, a tray of tea and biscuits arrayed before them. One boy was Japanese, tall and handsome, with strong features and a cool demeanor. The other was shorter, barely 5'5", with blue eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. His blondish-brown hair was ruffled by the cool breeze. He wore no sash on his arm, but his uniform jacket had golden lining and embroidery, and along the collar was golden-leafed designs.

"Lord Trenton," Jeffries bowed to the shorter student, "May I present; Joshua Cloudao."

"Good morning, Mr. Cloudao," the youthful voice of the Lord Trenton greeted him. "You've had an interesting morning."

"Ah...well, I can respect a man who has passion in his craft," Jason said with a mirthful grin. "I suppose I'll head on up and see what Lord Trenton is up to." He pointed upwards, towards the library roof, "He sees everything, you know?" he whispers and adds a wink. "Ta-ta," Finn smiled, trotting off.

As Finn walked away, he caught the comment and chuckled. If there was anything he liked better than being a Knight, it was keeping them on their toes. No one would assume that under the eccentric visage was a cool and calculating intellect capable of immeasurable feats.

Knight HQ was originally the old science building, but had long-since been converted for the purpose of housing and tending the needs of the Knights. The interior halls were plain, but as one entered, the Directory listing such rooms as 'Armory,' 'Training Center,' and 'Barracks' let one realize it served quite a different purpose.

The small group led Josh (ooc:and Jim?) to the Administration wing, located on the first floor. They passed many of the offices of the Knight's leaders, including Special Ops, with Jason Finn's name on the door. The last door was an oak door, with a bronze plaque stating, "Office of the Director: Matthew Durham, 23rd Lord Trenton." Kensuke opened the door and let them in.

Inside the office, they found the type of reception area usually reserved for a Fortune 500 CEO. Expensive carpeting and wood paneling accented the room, with art pieces lined along the wall. In the center of the room was a large red oak desk, a secretary busily typing at a computer .

"Good morning, Miss Paddington," Durham said as he stepped through.

"You've already got a full itinerary and you're late," she chastized him, not looking up from her work. "And who's this then?" her faint British accent demanded. Idly brushing a rebellious strand of sandy-brown hair, she looked up to give Josh the once-over.

"Miss Paddington, this is Joshua Cloudao, he's going to be a Squire."

"Charmed," she gave Josh a dismissive smile. The smile faded quickly. "I'll bring the appropriate papers to your office, then."

"Thank you Miss Paddington, you're one-of-a-kind," Durham replied, gesturing for Kensuke and Josh to follow him. As they walked down the small hallway towards the office, the Lord turned to Josh, "She's a right miracle worker," he chuckled, "Basically runs things, with me just giving the 'ok'," he smiled.

The students already inside had been chatting it up, waiting for the professor to arrive. There was now a scrape of chairs as the class stood in Durham's presence. The boys bowed while the girls did small curtsies.

The professor greeted his class and immediately began on the first lecture.

As Second Period ended and gave way to lunch, Durham stepped out of his Calculus II class. He was immediately met by Miss Paddington.

"Oh, hello," he sighed.

"You have a full itinerary after lunch, and only a few minutes to eat as-"

"It's the first day," Durham lamented, "How much could there possibly be?"

One thing Josh would have noticed is the large dais separated from the rest of the tables. Each regular table was round, with silverware and seatings for eight, and with fresh linens as well. It looked more like a five-star restaurant than a school cafeteria. Though it was packed, it was orderly, and the servers were expertly handing out the food, which was served on fine china bearing the Trenton crest.

The large dais was the exception. It was a long rectangular table, and all those who sat were Knights and Squires. All of them were happily eating, talking and conversing jovially.

"Come along," said a voice behind Josh. It was Durham. "Pardon if this is a bit fancier than you're used to," he smiled warmly, waving Josh to follow along, Miss Paddington close on their heels.

Durham guided Josh through the lunch line, which was serving today Balsamic-Marinated Radicchio with FreshRicotta (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Balsamic-Marinated-Radicchio-with-Fresh-Ricotta-352870). After gathering their meals, Durham led him to the dais, where he instructed him to sit at his left hand as Durham sat at the head of the table. The Knights all stood for the Lord before he seated, and all resumed their seats once he had.

"It's okay," Durham noticed Josh's uneasiness. "You'll get used to it. Not all who attend Trenton are high-born, after all," he explained. "Several of our Knights come from more...normative backgrounds, but they've all adjusted well."

As they began to eat, a murmur began at the cafeteria entrance. Students began to part like a wave, and it wasn't long before Durham noticed the reason for their reaction. An entrourage of young ladies was approaching, all dressed in a school uniform that was not the Trenton uniform. At the head of these girls walked a girl with stately mannerisms, a lofty but kind gaze in her eyes, and a grace almost unheard of in this time. She wore flowing robes of fine cloth, and Durham stumbled to his feet, walking over to greet her.

"Oh, this is gonna be interesting..." Miss Paddington chuckled to herself.

"Milady," Durham bowed, which triggered all the rest in the room to do the same. The girl offered her hand and he took it, as if a treasured gift, kissing it lightly. "To what do I owe the honor?" he asked.

"Milord," the girl smiled kindly, her voice soft, commanding and sweet. "You do me much honor. Does a Lady need a reason to visit her fiance? Especially when both have been parted for so long?"

Durham visibly blushed, an unusual sight.

"Queen Graciella, I am always ready to host my one and true love," he arose from his knee, guiding her to sit at his right-the seat of honor. "I always have this seat reserved, lest you grace us with your presence."

The other Knights waited until Graciella had been seated before seating themselves. The Queen's eyes roved and met Josh's.

"There seems to be an unfamiliar face at this table," she said, more to Durham than to Josh. "Who is this rougish young man?"

"He is Josh Cloudao, my Squire," Durham said, turning to introduce them. "Josh, this is my fiance, Queen of Prospect Prepatory, Her Highness Graciella Spollini."

"A pleasure," Graciella said warmly, waiting for his response.

"Nice to meet you,"said Josh, seeming less unsure of himself after what Durham had said.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too," Graciella said with a warm smile. "So, your first day and already a Squire...and in the service of my Dearest, no less," she continued, much to Durham's chagrin as he blushed once more. "So tell me, kind sir, what type of boy becomes Milord's Squire?" she asked.

"I'm trying to work that out myself,"said Josh.

"Well, you certainly picked the mysterious stranger-type," Graciella smiled at Durham, who'd basically gone from Lord to pudding.

"Yes well, I do have high expectations for the young man...and he seems up to the task," he answered.

"I only wish I had Milord's faith in the boy," came a new voice. It was Colonel Maeda, his own Squire at his heel. He stood at Graciella's right, ready to seat himself at her right shoulder. "Con permiso, nosto rena," he bowed.

"Granted," she smiled as he and his Squire seated themselves. Her attention had turned to the crowd, and a wide smile crossed her face. "It seems our new Squire has already caught the sight of some delicate flower," her eyes indicated to whom she meant. "Have you met this girl?" she asked Josh.

Kensuke arose from his seat, and again the room went deathly quiet. It was a wide-known fact not to cross the Trenton Samurai. He walked over, his face one of quiet contempt, still beautiful-but deadly all the same.

"And what? You think just because this is a nice school, with elegant settings, that you can just leave your things strewn about for others to clean up after?" he gestured at Josh's abandoned plate and food.

As Josh headed back out, Kensuke now gone, a familiar figure walked alongside Josh.

"Wow...that was something," Gwen said, trying to be conversational. "No one's ever stood up to the Colonel before...his name is the Trenton Samurai* you know..."

"Well, most students here would say otherwise," she answered. "Once, last year, he broke up a fight," Gwen explained. "Despite being trained in all sorts of martial arts, the Colonel refused to fight until the very end...and even then, the only thing his opponent suffered were bruises and a few sprained joints." She looked over at Josh, "Of course, he also has a reputation of being a bit of a prude," Gwen smiled at Josh.

"Well, I meant it as a compliment, actually," Gwen giggled in response, pausing at the door. "My next class is starting soon, and it's at the other side of campus, so I'll see you around. Ciao," she smiled, trotting off with a wave.

"Bye,"said Josh, waving, before opening the door and stepping into his next class.

The classes ebbed and flowed, like tides upon a beach. At Knight HQ, there was a flurry of activity as classes let out, the job of a Knight extending after school hours.

After class, Josh stepped out and walked towards Knight HQ.

Jim and Tom were packing three small boxes into the back of the M-21 War Hog that was parked in front of the Knight HQ

Finn noticed the two loading weapons onto a vehicle, but since the Lord had given them almost-free reign to develop weapons for the Knights, he dicided not to press it, instead walking in to head up to his dorm.

At the office, Miss Paddington was still working away at the desk, barely acknowledging Josh's presence except to announce him through the intercom.

Josh shrugged, then leant against the wall outside the office and waited.

Durham poked his head around the corner.

"How was class?" he asked, walking into the reception room. "Ready for more lessons?"

"Now that we've stimulated your mind, we must transform your body," he chuckled, "Erm...I mean, now we'll have training." He led Josh out, telling Miss Paddington to hold his calls.

The Lord led Josh through the corridors, to a room labeled Training/Gym. Opening the door, one half was clearly set up as a gym, with the other half set up in an Asian dojo-style.

"This is the Construct," Durham waved his hand around. He chuckled, "Actually, it's just our dojo...I just like to call it that," he smiled wide. "I know you can fight...but I'd like to see for myself." Two Knights approached, carrying training uniforms. "Care to see how you match against me?" he asked.

Durham ducked under the blow, locking Josh's arm in a vice-like grip as he tossed him deftly aside.

"Good," he smiled, "Again."

Durham ducked underneath the kick, grabbing Josh and pulling him into a Judo pin.

"Having fun yet?" he asked jovially.

"Yes,"said Josh, somewhat angry.

Durham released him, stepping back into a fighting stance.

"Let's see how well you defend..."

With that, Durham let out a loud 'kiai' as he began to attack, his fists moving in a blur.

"Nice one," Durham smiled. He raised his fist, his leg shooting out to hook Josh's and send him toppling to the ground. Knocking away Josh's defenses, Durham got his Squire in an arm-bar, giving Josh just a few seconds to think that he'd really end up with a broken arm. Letting go, Durham stepped away.

"That was good," he rubbed his side, "Adaptiveness, improvisation...a true street fighter. Good qualities for a Knight," he patted Josh's shoulder. "Ready for the real lesson?"

"Yeap, sure. Hold on,"said Josh, before walking to his carry bag. Reaching inside, he pulled out a glove, then slipped it on his left hand. Walking back over, he then said:" Ready."

"If you need some consideration for your...condition," Durham said, "Let me know. Now, time for class." He waved his hand, and a divider revealed the dojo to be larger than was previously thought. Two rows of Squires stood barefooted and dressed in gi on the mats, with a tall figure in front. It was obvious the figure was Kensuke.

"Colonel, sorry that we're late," Durham said, "I trust we didn't miss anything important?"

"Er...no, sir," he answered, visually miffed that Josh was there. "My service is to you, of course."

"This looks fun,"said Josh, clenching his left hand rapidly.

"We had just begun our warm-up," Kensuke said.

"Then I shall leave my Squire to your careful administrations," Durham answered.

"Of course, sir. Anything to please you," the Japanese boy bowed.

Durham turned to Josh, "He's a far better instructor than I. Despite his...unique outlook of your situation, he won't do a thing to disappoint me. Have a nice lesson," the Lord said, patting Josh's shoulder as he walked off.


"Ready?" Kensuke asked, his eyes narrowed. "If so, join the other Squires on the tatami mats."

"Sensei, rei!" said one Squire, the line bowing towards Kensuke, who bowed in response.

"Now then, we'll stretch it out first, and then begin our first lesson. We'll be doing Ikkyo and Nikyo techniques today," Kensuke briefed them as he began his own stretching warm-up.
