The grass was wet with dew. It was cold. She didn't mind, even though the back of her dress was now soaked and stained; such an unfitting thing for such a pretty white dress. The stars were bright, this night, and they mingled in the sky with the larger orbs of light that were the moons. Only two of them could be seen this month, but they were beautiful and blue, and illuminated the land in the absence of the sun. She loved coming here. Nobody ever came here at night, it was only during the day that the ruins were populated.
Ruins was, perhaps, not really fair. They were old, and moss covered, but they were made of a strange material not yet identified, and seemed to be incredibly complex. Smooth shapes that hid some specific purpose. A team of archaeologists, employed by Crescendo, a high-end shipper of rare artifacts and historical items, had worked almost an entire month now, attempting to excavate the place. They hadn't had any significant breakthroughs in identifying anything about the things, much to the dismay of their employers, but had been able to satisfy them and continue their work due to having uncovered several strange stones buried in the area. If anything, they would make pretty jewelry.
"Hey you!" Kara jumped to her feet upon hearing the husky voice. "What are you doing?" the guard demanded, moving the beam of his flashlight into her eyes. "Oh, um...I'm sorry, I'm leaving!" She quickly turned and ran back towards the colony. "Damn teenagers" snapped the guard as he continued his patrol. Still, he thought, it's the most excitement this job has given me so far. Who could steal these things when they're rooted to the ground, or better yet, who would want to?
"Jones, you there?" came the lazy voice from his comm. "Something going on in sector 7, check it out will you? Boss doesn't want anyone else drawing on these things." Clicking a button on his helmet, the guard gave a curt reply and began heading in the direction of the giant half-arch type thing. Who knew what it was. As he came into view of the area, he stopped, awed at the sight of electricity jumping between the ground and the top of the structure. "What in the hell.."
