Summary
Name: The Imperium of Man
Government: Autocracy with appointed advisory council
Capital: Terra
Population: Unknown; the majority of the population lives in Hive Cities where accurate census taking is nearly impossible

Background
The Imperium of Man is the work of a single Terran warlord rumoured to have been born in Anatolia circa 8,000 BC. After a long period of prosperity and technological advancement, an AI rebellion combined with a mysterious and devastating event in the Immaterium at roughly M20 caused the total collapse of what little cohesion existed between Terra and the many human colonies across the Galaxy. The millenia-long age of strife that followed would be known to the citizens of the fledgeling Imperium as Old Night, looked back on as a time on unimaginable suffering. Terra did not escape unharmed from the collapse of her colonies, and quickly fell into a period of barbarism and war. The advances of the past age were forgotten, replaced by roving bands of techno-barbarians and petty tyrants vying for power in the ruins of dead civilisations.
For millenia the horror persisted until some time shortly before M30, when The Emperor founded his Imperium on Terra. He lead his genetically enhanced warriors in a brutal series of campaigns known to future generations as the Unification Wars, a conflict characterised by the widespread use of chemical, nuclear and (rumoured) warpcraft. The conflict raged, and time and agin The Emperor proved himself in battle at the head of his formations of power-armoured warriors: fierce and merciless in battle, but gracious in victory his power of oratory allowed him to win over the conquered populations with a minimum of additional killing.
Finally, after years of combat, the last petty tyrants capitulated or were slaughtered without mercy. The shipyards of Luna were retaken with a show of force, and shortly after The Emperor set foot on Mars to accept the surrender and nominal annexation of the Adeptus Mechanicus who had sprung up on Mars during Old Night. The young Imperium could now pause for breath and prepare for the long days of consolidation and reconquest ahead.

Culture
The Imperium as it stands (Terra, Luna and Mars) is incredibly diverse. The various tribes and hive-civilisations of Terra are barely recognisable as the cultures that once inhabited their lands, and innumerable tribes of tecno-barbarians had developed many divergent traditions. The predominant aesthetic and cultural values seen in Imperial Government are a mix of ancient Greek and Roman. With the Unification, art and science are recognised as a laudable and necessary civilising influence on a population so recently scourged by war and tyranny.
The official creed of the Imperium is that of Imperial Truth: a ruthlessly secular set of beliefs where the highest possible trust (if not faith) is placed in science, and religion is decried as a brutalising influence harmful to the well-being of all.
Though not necessarily a matter of government policy, The Emperor's presence is strongly felt in Imperial culture: his arrival brought to a relatively swift end the worst horrors Terra had ever seen, and his appearances across the globe were often chronicled by the startled barbarians of Terra in terms of a visiting god coming to save his people.

Military Overview
The military of the Imperium consists of two branches: the Imperial Army and the Adeptus Astartes. The Army acts primarily to support the Astartes.

Imperial Army
The Imperial Army consists of a number of Regiments of 4,000 men each, most of which date back to the pre-Unification era and many of which practice genetic and cybernetic modification. Each Regiment is attached to a transport and a varying number of escort craft. Currently the few capital ships are relics operated by the Saturnine Fleet, a semi-independent force that operated all throughout Old Night, now nominally under the control of the Imperial Army.
Total Strength: 100 Regiments

Adeptus Astartes
The Adeptus Astartes are the vanguard force of the Imperium
, genetically enhanced warriors clad in towering power armour equipped with the finest quipment Terra can provide. Terra has 18 Legions of Astartes, each Legion numbering 10,000 men plus a small army of indentured servants (who maintain the vast stocks of vehicles and equipment the Legions require to function).

Sounds good, I suggest a crusade of great proportions.

He could try but there's a lot of people out there who are big. It'd be more difficult than the 40k Great Crusade. I'm Eldar, so I'd like to rp in this. It'd be nice to meet the Imperials before they were crazy fanatics, although they'll still hate my xeno guts. Easier to manip-I mean talk to.

Suffer not the Fascist, the Alien and the Furfag

(OOC: Not really. I have a policy against picking smaller NSes for the sake of dickwaving. I only fight against threats which are either nearly as or more powerful than my NS.)
