Short story interest thread (ooc)

Something I tried to do a while back was to get together a nice little collection of NS short stories that showed a side of a nation that normal rps don't often showcase, I didn't bump it much because I wanted it to just have a strait run of single post stories so maybe it got a little overlooked. Also I didn't announce it I just posted the idea and my own short story so that probably didn't help.

With three stories and 79 views I can't help but think that it could have done better. Hence an OOC interest thread to encourage more short stories. Anyone interested should put together a story that can be told in a single post, somewhere between 150 and 1,500 words seems about right.

Post any queries here; and whilst the old thread is aging it seems a shame to start anew when its potential is unspent so unless there are objections please post your story here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=566057)

Remember to put a title at the top of the story (if you have one) so I can include it in the OP contents post.

Well, I'll definitely be posting something sooner or later. I have my own story thread that I only ever had one story for, but it's solely about the history of a single family, so some other aspects, especially modern ones, could be written and posted in your thread.

Dunno when I'll get to it, though.

You should link to the individual posts, by the way. I know it's not necessary now with so few posts, but if there were more (especially 2+ pages) it would be useful to have the links.

I will definitely be posting. This sounds like a good idea, please inform me when there is an actual thread set up.

Sound idea, and good to hear that I'll get another story to read. I'm working on another one myself but I don't really want it be a thread where every other story is one about Sarrowquand. Variety that's where its at! Now to work out that internal linking thing.

(edit ok I think I got the post links set up right. Thanks alot for mentioning that now, three posts was quiet easy, fiffty would have been such a pain)

There's already a thread, http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=566057 and glad to hear your going to write a story, the more the merrier.

Will post something soon! Sounds like fun, may post many.

There should be somewhere where people can respond, to other people's stories, this is to learn about other's nations and such, there should be feedback, be it critiques, or questions. Right?

I was thinking that this OOC thread could be used to leave feedback etc whether its about writing style or the contents of the story, that way this thread won't just be totally contentless when it gets bumped to advertise the main thread, which is likely to have a slower post rate.

Starting now, also this will be set before, the current ongoing war, against our southern neighbor of Wessia, just wanted that info out there.

Defiantly a good idea, I'll get to writing a story.

You say anywhere between 150-1,500 words, would be alright to do more, or to serialize the stories?

Oops, sorry, slipped into Pidgin for a second there. I mean, that looks like a good place to tell you everything I know about Fatatatutti - even if I have to make it up.

Any story about your nations and its people really. I'm hoping that this is a good chance for people to showcase parts of their nation and culture that are hard to convey during the normal intercourse that is II.

The word count are just there for guidelines. I'm not sure what you mean by serialisation though? Could you give me an example of what you had in mind.

That's great I'd really like for this thread to be full of stories for people to flick through and I'm looking forward to the different writing styles.

I never thought of II in such terms, that is interesting.

Serialization, is when you break a story up into smaller sections, like the episodes of a television series, they are smaller parts, that make up the greater overall series, at least that is what I think he means, I could be completely wrong, just going on the meaning of the word.

Well then, get ready for a nation, consisting entirely of people age 16 and under.

I'm very interested. But I'm wondering whether or not there is a timeline you'd like the stories to fit within? PMT, PT, FT, etc. or even some historical moment in the nations history

Any time period is fine, historic moments are fine, you could even recount one of your culture's folk tales or legends.

I was looking for what kind of serialisation. I think some kinds might work with this concept, like if each chapter is a self contained story or if one story references and fits around another or is of the same event seen from another perspective.

Other kinds might be better suited to a different kind of thread then one that's aimed at short storys.

Well I was planning on making an episodic account of my countries Civil War, but I guess you're right, that would be better for a separate personal thread. Rest assured I'll think of something...

No kidding I had something similar in mind myself (not for the short stories thread though) I guess if its episodic it would be fine but I think that you'd benefit from putting a project like that in its own thread.

Excellent idea, Sarrowquand. Really, really good. One thing though--is 1500 the limit? Some of my longer posts have topped 2200, and if this is a, "one-shot" so to speak, I would recommend not putting a limit on it.
Sarrowquand
15-03-2009, 02:58
Just a guideline to think about, I'm not going to object to longer stories, still there is a point where it stops being a short story 2200 certainly isn't a problem.

15-03-2009, 04:04
Ha! Hierphil's got such a vibrant history, so many stories. This'll be great to show a few. I must say however that it isn't likely that anyone will want to read that 2200 word post. Just saying. It may the most amazing post ever written on jolt forums, but still who has that time? I'd recommend writing a novel instead if you want to go that indepth.
Sarrowquand
15-03-2009, 05:42
I can see people reading longer 2000-3000 word stories if they're already warmed up a bit and in the mood from reading shorter 150-700 ones.

First story of mine posted - a bit lousy, but it's a start. I may flesh it out, or tell it from other angles, or tell more stories involving the narrator and/or Jiang. Or perhaps all of that.

Second story put up - a little vignette, touching on a thin slice of the underworld in the Confederacy. Also, title of the first story changed. I think I'll do one story for each of a bunch of major and minor cities in the Confederacy.

Good to see some new stories, I've updated the index. I've got to say I'm liking it. DC the idea for writing up a short story for each of your cities is quite the project, it will be quite interesting to see how it turns out.

And VT your short stories are very good.

I'll have to finish up my own second story soon.

Keep them coming guys and we'll have a great thread.

I think it makes sense to place links to other story pages in the first post under the short story index, so if people want to post there story page links here then I'll add them to the main thread; that way people who are looking to read more stories can find them.

This is a very good idea, you can expect a couple from me. Are folktales/legends okay?
