OOC-first off, this thread uses tech from the early 1900s. Think World War One tech, minus tanks. This is character RP, you can RP as a rancher, Hijim, or whatever.
Quick Backstory-Before independence, Comorostan was called New Samara, after the colonizing nation (Samara). The main form of colonization was large ranches or plantations, using native Hijim labor. Small bands of marauding Hijim commonly attacked ranches/plantations before the army defeated them.
Map of Comorostan- http://i546.photobucket.com/albums/hh415/CptL/MapofComorostan.jpg

IC-Markus Jones was one of the first of the colonists to come to New Samara after the smallpox had started killing off people. He had taken advantage of the offer by the Samaran government and set out. Upon arrival, he was given a large cotton plantation for free and some money to help him start up. Now he was one of the biggest plantations north of Muirek. He was sitting in his parlor with his wife, Mary, when the noise began. A combination of whooping and horses hooves. "Honey," asked his wife, "what is that racket?" "I don't know," he replied, "I'll check it out." He glanced out the window and his mouth dropped. "Dear Lord." Outside, Hijim tribesmen rode across his cotton fields, torching his barn and the laborer's quarters. Several rode for the house. "Mary, get some food, some money, the essentials. Put 'em in a carrying case and get out through the back. It's the Hijim. I'll be right behind you." As he spoke, he loaded and cocked a double-barreled shotgun. Slipping additional ammunition into his pocket, he stepped out onto the porch, took aim, and fired. The blast knocked a Hijim off his horse and onto the ground, clutching his stomach. Markus went back inside, ran through the house, and out the back with his wife. When they finally stopped running, their backs were illuminated by the burning remains of their house. "We'll head for Muirek," grunted Markus, "There we can tell the baron what's happening." They started down the road, the war cries of the Hijim pain in their ears.

ooc: This sounds interesting. However can you give me some more background. How far along is it colonization wise? Is this frontier the whole country or just a region? I'm guessing this is going for and old west theme right?

OOC-yeah sort of. the colonization is pretty much: all the cities are large, the countryside is undeveloped except for its dotted by large ranches/plantations. The colonial government controls everything through barons, dukes, people who have been given titles and control over the land. They raise the regiments for the colonial army. so its large cities, the rest is undeveloped except for the ranches/plantations, and the occasional Hijim camp. But most Hijim are working on the ranches/plantations

IC:
Jack Fisher was a resident of the city of Muirek. He was a relatively wealthy man, young, and owned a small shop. Above the shop was a room that he would often rent out to anyone that could pay for it (and the rent wasn't too costly, and Jack would often drop the price if someone really needed the room). The previous tenants had been kicked out the day before when he found out that they were not only stealing from the shop, but were also planning to rob the local bank and skip town. Jack chased them out with his shotgun, but not before breaking one of their noses. Now he had set up a new sign: "Room For Rent, See Store Owner For Details."

Jack's wealth did not come from his store, however. He had started out with the money his Uncle James had left him when he died back in Samara, and foolishly gambled it all. Fortunately, he won, and increased his wealth to a decent level. He invested it in a number of businesses, most paying off but a few leading to a large loss of money. Ultimately he moved on to buy a ranch, and personally lived and worked there for about five years. Now, at the age of thirty-four, he still owned the ranch, but no longer lived or worked there. He hardly made any money off of it, but between the ranch and his store, plus his investments, he had a fairly large amount of money. Despite his wealth, however, he was not married (the last of his family, in fact), and in fact never intended to be.

He walked into his shop early in morning, as he always did, and flipped the sign to OPEN.

Captain TJ Rosner was commander of the Samaran Army garrison in Muriek, he resided within Fort Johanson, not so much a fort as a compound. It had 3 dorm rooms, a mess hall, an arsenal/magazine(the only stone building), a bathhouse, a headquarters, a stable/motor pool and the commander's single story home. The perimeter was a timber palaside wall with an elevated walkway on the interoir side and one gate pointed twoards town also there was a blockhouse in each corner of the fort. He commanded a relatively strong garrison of 150 men, 15cars and 25 horses, the job was relatively easy and the only concern being the Hijim tribesman. and in any case the benefits outweighed the risks, free room and board for him and his wife Anne, and a garunteed plot of land from the government when he left the service.

TJ's train of thought was interrupted as one of his officers came in, "Sir" he said as he saluted "We have a problem, a runner from the Jones Plantation said the Hijim were torching the place". "Good God" replied TJ "rally 50 men and tell them to mount up on the cars and we'll go beat down those Hijim animals!"

Markus and Mary, after hiding in the hills, doubled back to the plantation. They grabbed any food that hadn't been stolen, and piled into the car. Then they roared out of the garage and down the road towards Muirek.

And he was relativly successful.
His cattle had a large land to graze, and his pigs where always fat.
He never bothered with politics, the only time he worried about the outside world was when cattle prices dropped...

But today was a good day, he managed to sell his chickens eggs for a good sum, and decided to treat them with a large dinner.
"Here you are ya crazy hens." He smirked as the hens scrambled for the grains, when he was finished he called out:
"Marcus! Are you done washing the clothes?"
"Yes Pappa!"

TJ and his motorized column roared up to the Jones Plantation, this place was at best a disaster area. Most of the fileds were burned or still burning and the house had been ransacked. TJ sent out foot patrols to look around for the Jones or the Hijim. He was concerned, since the Hijim didn't often release prisoners, well alive at least. "Sir, over here" called a private by the garage. "Tire tracks Sir, the Hijim must have stloen their car" "Not likely Private" replied TJ "the Hijim can't drive and wouldn't have enough gasoline to keep it running. This is a good find though it means the Jones escaped" he said patting the private on the back. "Men, mount up we'll had back to town and make plans for a punitive expedition" Yelled TJ as he climbed into his car. Once all the cars were loaded the column headed back to Fort Johanson. And across the large field, deep in the treeline several angry pairs of Hijimi eyes watched them.

The Jones' car ran out of gas just outside of Muirek. They got off and trekked into town. Markus knew a person with a room for rent. It would do until they could go back to the plantation. After a few minutes of walking they came to the store. "Markus went inside and approached the owner. "Hello, Jack! That room you got still for rent?"

OOC-for the record, planes are now allowed, just not armed planes. unless your character wants to take a shotgun up with him

TJ's column rolled through town his car stopped while the men headed back to the fort, and headed off to Jack's shop. "Sir how do you know the Jones would come here?" asked one of the privates trailing behind him. "Well, the Jones know Jack and he's the closest room for rent in Muriek, so it's just logical they'd go there" TJ left the private at the door and walked into the store. "Hello Jack, have the Jones' been by recently?"

ooc: I think I could join this.

Freidrick Strauss, a Major in the army and a minor noble from Samara, was sent by the government of Samara to inspect the military and stability of the region, plus map out the area, and report back to them every so often, he would be in the colony for at least a year. He only had two companies of cavalry under his command numbering at 150 Cavalrymen. He was stationed inside the port town of New Knisa. He is a man known for his bravery and loyalty in Knisa and he intends to maintain this reputation in the colony.

He was kept in a modest two story home on the outskirts of the city, he was in the colony only for a week and was still settling in when he heard of the attack, it would go into his report. He gathered his cavalry and began his first expedition into the countryside. His men all carried rifles, plus sabers, but little of anything else making them light moving, supposedly ideal for these conditions.

He rode onto the scene, most of the fires now smoldering. He held up his hand and the column stopped in unison. After a few quick glances around the area to check for anything unusual then with a quick flick of his wrist, his men fanned out and began to ride in a line towards the farm, combing the area for evidence. If he could make out how they conducted attacks, he might be able to understand their tactics and motives better. The first thing he gathered was that they were not interested in conquest, secondly, that they their intention may be simply to scare off the plantation owners. He took out a note pad and scribbled his thoughts onto it and continued to ride.

"I think we can afford whatever you're charging," said Markus, "we brought most of our money with us. What's you're current price?"

TJ's column rolled through town his car stopped while the men headed back to the fort, and headed off to Jack's shop. Then TJ walked in. Markus recognized him from militia training. "Captain Rosner! It's good to see you again. I've got bad news, though. The Hijim are on the move again. They burned our plantation just a few hours ago. They rode off towards Old Kinsa." Markus looked out to see the cars loaded with soldiers. Jack answered casually. "About $50 each month. If that works for you, I'll help you take your things upstairs." It was then that TJ walked in.

"Hello Jack, have the Jones' been by recently?"

"Yes, here they are," was Jack's reply as he motioned to the Jones', who were currently just out of the Captains view. He stepped aside to let him see them.

"Though by the looks of things, I suppose you knew all that already, right?"

Jack frowned. "That doesn't sound good. You can stay here for as long as you need to."

The Hijim crept up unobserved. This was a war party of 25, one of the smaller bands of Hijim. But deadly still. They attacked in traditional Hijim fashion: they surrounded the house, then on a signal from the leader, they all leaped out of the brush and ran at the house screaming the traditional Hijim war cry. They were armed with hatchets, javelins, and bow and arrow. They would kill anyone outside the house, then torch the house and anyone in it.

The 5th Hijim Hunters Cavalry Battalion moved up the road. Lieutenant Colonel Trey Wilson, the CO, led it towards a house, burnt to the ground. Dead civilians were scattered around it.

"It looks like a war party, Colonel," said one tracker, Robert Wooder. "About 30, I'd guess. They went north."

"How do you know?" barked a sergeant. They could've gone anywhere, and anyway, you're a private, and have nothing to say!"

"Shut up, you drunk!" he yelled back.

"Both of you girlies, be quiet!" called Wilson. "Let's go north!"

As the cavalry rode on, a wandering band of about Hijim (not the same group) spotted them from a distance. Sensing a chance for battle, they hurried towards a large sand dune on the roadside. When the cavalry was right in front of them, they struck, launching arrows and hurling javelins. The few with rifles stayed on their bellies and fired, while those armed only with close-in weapons charged down the dune at the cavalry.

"Draw and fire at will!" the CO screamed. The Hijms continued their firing, but slowly retreated and rode away. They were not equipped to take on a fully equipped battalion trained to fight them.

"God! I thought we were hunting them!" one soldier yelled.

"We are, you idiot! Now let's chase them down!" replied another.

"What about the dead?" said the first.

"The dead are to be left!" yelled Wilson. "We need to chase them down. They need to be slaughtered!"

The battalion rode up the dune, following the war party, passing 9 dead Hijms along the way.

The Hijim (the ones who were being tracked) continued onwards towards Old Kinsa. They had no real strategy; they were simply headed in the direction of what they knew was a large concentration of wealth and loot. (Old Kinsa isn't really that big, it's kind of a minign boom town). They had heard the sounds of the trackers skirmishing, but thought nothing of it: one less group to share the loot with. Nonetheless, they sent 10 warriors back to ambush them. They knew they couldn't stop them; they just wanted them slowed down.

The regiment rode on, not knowing what lay ahead, until a small forest was ahead, which looked like a perfect site.

"Sir," said Wooder,"should some men be sent ahead to check for an ambush? It seems what a Hijm would do."

"No. All haste must be used." the troops rode right into the ambush.

16-03-2009, 22:22
The Hijim attacked. This group was better armed then the last; all opened up with rifles of some sort. Some ran out of ammunition after three or four shots. They threw down their guns and ran at the cavalry, scimitars raised.

"Draw swords, and fight!" Wilson yelled. Though the Hijm were good at fighting, the Hunters were better trained, and outnumbered the Hijms over 20 to 1, not to mention the rifles. Most of the ambushing troops were shot before they finished their charge, and the rest were stabbed. A quiet fell over the field.

"Casualties?" said the Colonel.

"13 dead, 31 wounded," one man said.

"Damn. 16 dead, 45 wounded on the mission so far." Colonel Wilson's numbers were already down to 189 men able to fight. This, though, could be an adequate number of troops to take down 15 Hijm raiders. They were an effective force, still, because he saw a pile of smoke a few miles forward...

Old Kinsa. Very old Kinsa. More like rotten old Kinsa, possibly fossilized Kinsa; the city was in such a state of disrepair it almost merited a capital D. Not really, though, since 'capital', as a word, definitely could not describe anything that had to do with the mining town. Maybe capital punishment for whatever bloody idiot was able to do this to another human being. Alan Morrisey pulled the knot tight on the last of the series of what would probably make nasty scars after it healed. The form on his operating table stirred and stifled a cry of pain - however, that was it.
"We're done here, Mrs. Laroche," he said, washing his hands. "Lying on your back will not be a good idea for a few days, but after we take the stitches out, you should be all right. The spine's OK." The woman sat up a mite too fast and yelped as the threads pulled on her skin. "It will be a few unpleasant days, I admit," Alan added and turned around to face her.
"Thank you, doctor Morrisey," she said, apparently without meaning it too seriously. Dropping a few coins in the payment box, she swept - as much as the arrangement of stitches on her back, now hidden under a dress, permitted - out into the daylight.
Mugged on the street. And whipped across the back. Granted, it was one of the streets where Alan would tread with... well, either with a private army, or not at all. But that was beside the point. This desperate place made people go savage. He didn't know how much more he could take. He also knew that returning to Samara would not help things much; the prospect of a federal prison wasn't very endearing.
He sighed as he washed the few surgical instruments that helped him get by here, well under the radar of whatever residue of law enforcement there was. Shine like the sun. Well, there certainly was shining in that place, but not much of it involved the sun... He shuddered at the recollection, wiped his hands and started unpacking the fresh boxes of meds.
