The Drum Beat of Freedom (Closed, attn: Nachmere, New Manth)
Lemnos AFB, Lemnos Island, Lamoni
It was to begin as an average day, but it would soon be interrupted for all.
It started with the air traffic controllers, who directed the landing of helicopters from Nachmere, only to direct the landing and unloading of two hundred fifty C-10 Minotaur air transports, each filled with tanks, APCs, as well as other vehicles and supplies.
The vehicles from Nachmere were lined up into rows on the specially prepared lot, and the troops were organized into Battalions; each Battalion next to a group of buses.
Against this backdrop, a lone figure approached the ranking officers of the troops from Nachmere; being trailed by a retinue of aides. This man was Lt. General Flavian Antonovich; and he was the Liaison Officer for the allied troops that would be trained in, and stationed on; Lemnos Island.
Lt. General Antonovich saluted the senior officers from Nachmere, and said, "Welcome to the Free Republic of Lamoni. We have prepared quarters for you and your men. These quarters are like a college dormitory, so there shouldn't be any problems. When your men have boarded the buses, they'll be taken to their quarters, and the exercises will start tomorrow, after your men have rested, and the contingent from New Manth has arrived."

The Nachmerian senior officer, Brigadier General Tom Grant, returned Lt. General Antonovichs salute. His black beret, the pride of the Nachmere armored corps, was pefectly arranged on his head. His shoes were so shiney they reflected his uniform. The only thing spoiling his appearance was a large scar that went from the right upper corner of his face and across to the bottom left corner.
"We are happy to be here. I am sure what ever barracks you have are more than sufficient, as my troops usually sleep on their AFVs during training. I would like to ask though, what are the smoking regulations here, bcause I havent had one for 10 houres of flight and I am ready to tear someones head off!"
The lower ranked officers behind Grants back smiled openly. They couldent wait for a smoke either. As the Lamonians were about to find out, the Nachmere army has wierd ideas when it comes to protocol and tact...
Lt. General Antonovich smiled at the smoking question. "We are not smoking Nazi's Brigadier. As long as you smoke outdoors, it will be fine. The only reason that we ask that smoking be done outdoors is that we once had a foreign military dignitary accidentally drop a lit cigar into an ammunition storage facility, which caused a fire in the munitions that the cigar was dropped into. Naturally, the facility and a good radius around it were evacuated; but fortunately, there were no explosions, due to the Halon fire suppressant system inside the room. Other than that restriction, feel free to smoke.
If you would like to board the bus, Brigadier, you can smoke inside the bus, provided that the windows are down; and we can get your men settled into their new temporary quarters."
If one were inclined to look in that direction, one could see three platoons of Lamonian troops standing watch in order to be sure that their allies' vehicles were guarded. The AY-144 assault rifles gripped in the hands of the urban camouflaged troopers (OOC: http://camo.henrikc.dk/details.asp?autono=189 ) were gleaming, and the uniforms themselves looked clean, but showed use, while the combat boots were polished to a shine. These three platoons had conducted multiple urban environment drills in the past month, and would likely perform more of them in the time to come.
With everyone on board the buses, they started moving the five kilometer distance to the temporary quarters for the Nachmerian troops. One could be forgiven for thinking that a fire was burning onboard the buses, from the sight of the cigarette smoke streaming from the windows. On each seat of the bus, an MRE and a pack of Yanitarian "Bon Temps" cigarettes could be found. (OOC: http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=5139&st=0 ).
Lemnos Island was a tropical paradise near the beaches, but it also had heavy jungles inland, which made for perfect jungle training conditions. Thus, a lot of plant life could be seen by the Nachmerian troops as they were taken to their barracks.

Finding that their new allies put an MRE and a pack of cigarettes on each seat boosted up the troops moral. As they reached the temporary quarters a conversation could be heard on nearly every bus, but this would be a good example:
"Buildings?!" Pvt. Spitz half- asked half-cried in amazment.
"No way. I heavent slept in a building on training since Armor School" ansawered a corporal.
"Yeah, must be for their HQ or somthing. We will sleep on the tanks, as always" spitz muttered.
The young 1st Lt sitting at the front of the bus said- "Alright you cry babies. Everybody of the bus. Spitz, you stay and clean the bus up, we wouldent want to give our new friends the wrong impression, would we?"
"I'm on it"
Each soldier than picked up his own kit and got off the bus. Some of them were looking at the AY-144s with envy, all the tank crews still carried the now ancient SLC 7.62mm.
"We look like an army from 40 years ago with these stupid things!" a Pvt teased his tank commander.
"Who cares about the rifles, we are tank troopers. The rifle is the backup for the backup for the backup" The TC said, secretly planning to get some shooting done with those modern looking weapons.

Lemnos
A number of logistics vessels were attached to the Manthian contingent, chief among them the tank carriers Agios Spiridon and Eolos. Now safely in port at Lemnos Island, cranes were busy offloading the Nakil 1A3HAs of the 551st Mechanized "Lycaon" division, along with most of the other heavy equipment that had been judged better to ship by sea than by air. Meanwhile military transport aircraft and helicopters disgorged light equipment and of course the soldiers of the 551st, as well as men of both the 72nd Independent Airmobile Brigade (Abu 'Ubaidah Brigade) and the 614th Light Infantry "Agios Herodion" division.
While the rank and file were herded onto buses (not without the occasional longing glance towards the coast and its beaches, which had elicited a lot of wistful commentary as the men had passed overhead), the higher-ranked officers had arrived separately by helicopter and now Major General Ahmed Demese, a short but trim bronze-colored man and the senior commanding officer among the three formations, led the group to meet their hosts.

ooc: lamoni we sort of need you your the host...
OOC: Been helping to co-ordinate strategy for the attack, designing stuff, as well as doing college work; which has a habit of eating my time, sorry. But I haven't forgotten the thread. http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/locationlamoni.png Lemnos is the big island to the west of the Lamonian mainland.
IC: With the arrival of the Manthian contingent to the join training, men and material were dedicated to ensuring the smooth transfer of Manthian equipment from ship to shore.
While the Nakil 1A3HA's were known to be good tanks, the Lamonians couldn't help but quietly joke amongst themselves that their own MBT, the M-21A1 Valkyrie (OOC: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=581695 ) was better. Nothing that their Delian League allies could overhear, but it was still there. Regardless, the offloading was handled professionally, and soon; all of the Nakil's had been offloaded from their ships, and being directed to their designated spaces.
Lamonian troops carrying their AY-144 assault rifles (OOC: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13933320&postcount=264 ) were on patrol, in order to make certain that all was well, and every once in a while, pairs of YA-42 Air Superiority Fighters (OOC: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14341427&postcount=340 ) could be seen flying overhead as part of their aerial patrol missions. Even with allied military delegations coming to train with the Lamonian military, operations continued to go as they normally did.
When the Nachmerian troops had reached the barracks; their buses stopped, and the personell on each bus were lined up while a Lamonian Sergeant First Class read out their names, and assigned each name to a room. There were to be no more than two people per room, and the officers all got their own rooms. As promised, the rooms closely resembled those of a standard college dormitory, and each one of them even had a tv, which the Nachmerian troops could use, if they wished. There was even a bank of twenty computers in a large room on the first floor of the five story building, and the Nachmerian troops were welcome to use them in order to talk to home, and surf the web in general. Naturally, some websites were blocked as per military regulations, and this was dutifully covered by the the Sergeants before they started the room assignments (OOC: think of what would be acceptable to access in school, for a starting point); and would be covered again by the Sergeants posted to the nearby buildings intended for the Manthian contingent, where they would find things to be pretty much the same as in the Nachmerian barracks.
The first floor of all of the barracks buildings also held a cafeteria, where troops both Manthian and Nachmerian could get a meal, if they wished. Dinner for this night would be pizza, with each platoon invited to select the toppings that they wanted for their pizzas. Alcohol would also be permitted this night, as long as the people ordering it didn't overdo themselves with the booze. The training sessions would begin the next day, after all, starting with an introduction to the AY-144 assault rifle, and allied training with it, while Lamonian troops would practice with the rifles of their allies.
---
"Major General Demese, I am Lt. General Antonovich. Welcome to the Free Republic." A handshake was offered after the salute as the Lt. General greeted their Delian League allies to Lamonian soil. "Would that your visit to allied soil be done under more pleasant circumstances; but you and your men will be training with our soldiers, and a division from Nachmere. One of the exercises that will be happening during your time here will be between the Lycaon division, and the Nachmerian Armored division. Many other classes, exercises, and simple get-togethers will also be arranged, so as to weave our three contingents together for when the fighting starts. For now, we will be escorting you and your men to their barracks, as it is late in the local afternoon. In fact, we have a DNA-30 helicopter (OOC: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14483754&postcount=9 ) ready for you and your officers, if you'll but follow me."
The Lt. General led the way to the waiting helicopter, and waited while the crew ensured that everyone was strapped in properly before sitting down and strapping himself in. Once the crew chief was satisfied that everyone was ready for the short hop, the helicopter's engines spooled up, and it lifted off of the ground, on it's way into the clear blue sky, which was darkening as it became closer to night.

ooc: my forces include the 6th Light Armored Division and the Parliament Guards (PG) Air Assault Brigade.
Devoid of much to do once they knew where they sleep, eat and shower, the Nachmere troops found themselves a bitt bored. Soon singing of unit songs could be heard from every building. These were not official songs, they were songs written by the trrops and for the troops. Every unit sang songs about how good it is, and mainly how bad other units were.
From the brracks area of the PG there was complete silence, as the men spent their time cleanning their precious SLC-2000s.
"Why dont you sing, you bunch of spoiled SF wankers!" A young soldier from the 62nd Armored brigade shouted at the building.
A handgrenade flew out of the window, sending the young soldier on a panic run for cover. He ducked and counted to 4, than looked at the handgrenade and saw the blue colour of a traning inert grenade.
"Next time we'll throw a real one! Bugger off!"
This time, it was a Lamonian Captain who knocked on the door of the Nachmerian Special Forces Barracks.
When answered, he only had to say this. "I am Captain Jonathan Stokes. If you men will follow me, we'll be going to the firing ranges for practice with the AY-144 and LAAR-5 (OOC: http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=4979 ) assault rifles.
The firing range was as simple an affair as one could imagine. The metal target plates were firmly placed in front of a dirt berm, which was backed by armored hull sections from old Cruisers. A Lamonian soldier was standing at each station of the firing range, ensuring that full safety measures were taken; as a casualty here would do no one good.
The first rifle given to the Nachmerian special forces troops to fire was the LAAR-5, and the range safety personell had given each trooper a short instruction period in how to use the rifle before allowing them to fire it.

The PGs were not used to bullpup rifles. At first the results were ammusing to the Lamonians. Soo they got the hang of it and were doing well for first time users. They seemed impressed with the rifles. They offered their allies some a chance to use the SLC-2000(http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=5521) carbines they carried. These were much simpler cheaper guns but far lighter than the LAAR-5s.

"It's a pleasure to visit no matter the circumstances." Demese replied smoothly. "May I introduce my colleagues, Major General Dimitris Kosoulidis in command of the 614th Division and Colonel Muhammed Maziq of the 72nd Independent Brigade."
After the salutes of the two others and the senior staff the group followed the Lt. General to the helicopter.
***
Neither pizza nor beverages like beer were common fare in the Greater Economic Union, still less so in the Atrean domains where the majority of the Army was generally stationed. Still it was an uncommon soldier who turned up his nose at hot food, even less so at free drinks, unfamiliar or not, especially among the two non-Muslim dominated contingents.
The singing was another matter, once strains of song began drifting over from the Nachmere barracks a certain competitive spirit began to take over and rival songs started being shouted from the windows. The noise went on some time in the night, though a few groups eventually dominated, including one man of Agios Herodion divison who, apparently trying to trump all competition, belted out Greek songs in a voice probably better suited to a drill sergeant than a private.
Some of the Lamonian troops took up the offer to fire the SLC-2000. Once they'd adjusted to the weapon, they were doing quite well, and a competition began to see who could shot better than whom. In the meantime, the Nachmerian PGs were told that they could keep the LAAR-5s, if they wished; as they would be a gift from the Lamonian government that would help allied logistics. Then there was an offer for the PGs to test fire the AY-144. The Lamonians figured that their allies wouldn't refuse the chance to try out such an excellent rifle.
---
Lt. General Antonovich shook the hands of the group of Manthian officers. While on board the helicopter, the Lt. General continued to talk to Mj. General Demese, and the others. "How much do you know of the Strator threat? I know that our government will most enthusiastically share all relevant Lamonian intelligence with your country, but it would be good to know how much that you already know about the situation.
In the meantime, your men will be well taken care of while they are here, but the exercises will be the best that we can devise. Only the most rudimentary data are available for what conditions will be like in Strator, so we are going to push for training in as many different climates and conditions as we safely can."
Conversation would become harder once the helicopter's engines came up to power, but it wouldn't be impossible.

ooc: oops. we got two diffrent time frames in the same thread...
The PGs were very pleased at the idea of keeping the weapons. The PG was made of three divisions. The Counter Terror and Counter Insurgency brigade, the Heavy Armored Assault brigade, and the Airborne Assault brigade. The men here were of the Airborne Assault brigade. They always envied their brothers in the counter-terrorisem unit, because that unit had many diffrent firearms issued. But even the stuck-up bastards of the counter-terrorisem division dident have these nice rifles.
Meanwhile at the barracks, the soldiers of the 6th Light Armored were going through their rutine of AFV maintanance. Each crew was taking care of its own Tank or APC. An order was issued to wait with maintanance that requires AFV movment until the Lamonians made clear of their regulations and orders. No one wanted to step on the toes of the very generous hosts.

"Personally I am not an expert on Strator, Lt. General," Demese replied, "and so although I've been studying what information is available since we got involved, I couldn't say much more than what's generally available. I do know that the Union Navy has been watching the current fighting in Strator with, ah, high interest," he smiled briefly, "They stay at a discreet distance but nonetheless I am told they are gathering quite a Bit Of INFORMATION AND I'M SURE YOUR COMMAND WILL HEAR ABOUT WHATEVER WE LEARN."
Demese settled back into the seat as the chopper lifted off.

At the quarters assigned to the higher ranking Nachmerian officers, Brigadier General Tom Grant approached a lamonian officer who immidietly saluted him. The Brigadier returned his salute, and asked “Where can I find Lt. General Antonovich?”
OOC: As I told you both by TG, my net was down for almost a week, so here we go again. I'll try to get the two separate timelines into one.
IC: One enterprising Lamonian 2nd Lieutenant; Micheal Jameson, overheard the Nachmerian order to suspend maintenance work on their AFVs. Realizing that this could be a minor but easily solved problem, the 2nd Lieutenant reported on the issue to his Colonel; Col. Marius Dennison. Thus, a paper with the Colonel's signature was given to the 2nd LT by the Colonel, which stated that the Nachmerian troops could maintain their own vehicles in Lamonian AFV maintenance facilities on base. This was part of the policy of making their guests feel as valued as possible while not sacrificing Lamonian security.
Either way, the 2nd Lt gave the paper to the first Nachmerian soldier that he found near their vehicles, and suggested that he give the paper to his commanding officer. Thus, one problem was solved.
---
The Lt. General nodded to indicate that he understood what Demese had stated; that being easier than yelling to him. In any case, it only took a few minutes to reach their destination, which they came to before the Manthian troops did, owing to the faster speed of a helicopter over a land vehicle. The Yanitarian built DnA-30 helicopter landed on a nearby helicopter pad, and the officers proceeded to walk the fifteen feet to the barracks; the Lt. General leading the Manthian party to Demese's private quarters. By this time, you could see Lamonian and Nachmerian troops firing assault rifles on one of the firing ranges below.
---
The Lamonian officer in question turned out to be Col. Marius Dennison, fresh from giving the 2nd Lt the note that allowed the Nachmerian troops to use Lamonian maintenance facilities for maintenance on their vehicles, after he had walked over to the Nachmerian barracks on a walk around the base that was intended to check up on how everyone was doing.
"Lt. General Antonovich is currently in conference with Major General Ahmed Demese of the Manthian contingent. If you wish, I can take you to him, Brigadier."

A very nervous fresh-out-of-bootcamp Soldier from the 62nd Armored Brigade was handed a paper by a Lamonian officer and given an order to give it to his commanding officer. Unfortunately for him he was indeed quite green, and also not the brightest crayon in the box. He turned around looking for his lieutenant and saw the brigade commander. He walked up to the colonel and saluted. He never spoke to a colonel and was very excited, so his salute was as sharp as a knife.
“Easy there, son, you’ll pull a muscle” said Colonel Jack Ram, and returned a very relaxed salute. “Now, what is it that you want?”
“Sir, I was given this paper to give to my CO, but he is not here.”
Ram took the paper and read it. “Very good son, you just saved all of us a great deal of time. Go back to your work” he then turned to his assistants and said “Take this to the Division HQ and the other Brigade commanders. And tell my Battalion Commanders I want the vehicles and men to be ready for my inspection in 8 hours. I want the equipment to look like it came out of the bloody factory! Get on it.”
Brigadier General Grant smiled at the Colonel and answered- “Yes, that would be very kind of you. I need to get the OK to bring in some more equipment, and also some air support. I would also like to meet the New Manth people and see what they are like. Please, lead the way.”
Colonel Dennison led the Brigadier to his personal M-20 B Hamsher IFV (OOC: http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=4168), which was driven by a Captain. Normally, officers would go around in a helicopter or LY83 Fox, but the Colonel liked the feeling of even minor protection offered by the AFV. The drive to the Manthian barracks totaled just over a minute, and had the Colonel showing the Brigadier where some of the vehicle maintenance facilities were on the base.
When the pair reached the door to Mj. General Demese's quarters, Colonel Dennison knocked on the door, waited for the word "enter," and let the Nachmerian Brigadier enter the room before he himself entered, closing the door behind him.
It appeared that the Lamonian Lt. General, and the Manthian Mj. General were just settling down to business when they had been interrupted by the knock on the door.

IC: Lt. General Antonovich recognized Col. Dennison, and Mj. General Demese solved the mystery of the name of the Nachmerian Brigadier's name, as the Lt. General rose and saluted Brigadier Grant. Now that everyone knew each other's name, it was time to see what had brought the Brigadier to see them.
"Greetings, Brigadier Grant. Is there something that we can do for you? We were about to call for a senior Nachmerian officer when you arrived; so that we could explain the first exercise in greater detail. If you all would like to sit down, we can get started."
Nachmere
29-03-2009, 10:42
“Well, I seem to be the senior Nachmerian officer on this island” Said Grant with a smile. “I will naturally sit with you to discuss the exercise. I would like to first ask permission for 8 transports carrying some very vital ammunition for my tanks to land here in 8 hours. And if possible, our air force asked if they could send 50 INF-2000 fighters over so they can join the training. “
OOC: I'll try to get a workable line-art of the place up soon.
IC: "Permission granted on both counts, Brigadier. I think that our Air Force would enjoy seeing how their YA-42 Corsaire Air Superiority Fighters would fare against the INF-2000. And it's perfectly permissible for you to bring ammunition for your tanks.
Now Generals, we shall discuss our first exercise. This is going to involve a Nachmerian division (the Lt. General gave a shifty look as all present knew that there was only one Nachmerian division present), against a Manthian division of their choice."
The Colonel in the room had brought a map of the exercise area with him, and laid it out on the table. On it, a map of a rock strewn valley; approximately ten kilometers across at the widest point, narrowing to 7.5 km at the narrowest, and then widening again over a length of fifty km.
"This Gentlemen, is the Karamorkum Valley, in central Lamoni. The idea of the exercise being that the Nachmerian division will defend against an attack by a Manthian division trying to cross the valley in order to reinforce the front lines. With the size of the boulders in this valley, nature itself will provide cover for your tanks; but remember that this works both ways. Another point to consider is that both sides will be using MILES gear to simulate the impact of their weapons. So both sides will need a clear shot in order to score a kill. Questions and comments?"
Nachmere
31-03-2009, 09:43
Brigadier Grant didn’t look concerned about only one division.
“Seems like a good format to me. Usually the attacker would have numerical superiority, but considering we are putting Nakils vs. Foxes…”
Lt. General Antonovich smiled. "This first exercise will also allow both sides to see what the other is capable of, as well as giving us a benchmark to use when planning future exercises. Lamonian UAVs will monitor the exercise, and both sides will have a dedicated encrypted radio frequency for safety. We are here to FIGURATIVELY kill each other, not literally.
As might be expected, the Manthian objective will be to push through the Nachmerian defenses, and transit the valley. Nachmerian objective will be to push the enemy elements back until Lamonian observers determine that the remaining Manthian force is incapable of completing their objective.
The exercise commences in three days, which will provide time for the selected units to reach the designated exercise facility."

The Manthian generals leaned over to study the map. Demese was the first to speak up.
"Since we will be in the role of the attacker the 551st Mechanized would be the most appropriate formation. That is my own division, Brigadier Grant, so I think it will be the two of us going at each other tomorrow."
The other two gave nods of concurrence. Of the other two Manthian formations, the 614th division was mountain infantry, less suited for a maneuver battle with Nachmerian tanks, and the 72nd Brigade lacked the size and firepower for the task; it was a formation with a relatively narrow specialization - heliborne assault - which was not particularly suited to the terrain and scenario.

ooc:Holy crap, that a big division. Only fair as one division never attacks one division in real life. I touched up my obat a little, nothing too dramatic, jut aded some stuff i forgot about like combat engineers and division echlons.

Definitely has more dismounts and a bit larger range of stuff in general... I guess it is the difference between a light division and what's aimed to be a heavy mechanized one.
Oh, and back to IC - or at least a one-line placeholder...
While the other two studied the map, Demese passed the Nachmerian general the information he'd asked for, and glanced over the Nachmerian division's order of battle in turn.
OOC: Like I said, let me know where you want to be on the map, and i'll update it.

IC: The Lamonians in the room were watching the Nachmerian and Manthian Generals as they plotted and planned where they would either make their stand, or attack. This exercise would prove to be instructive about the armies of both sides, and their commanders.
Neither Lamonian said anything, but simply observed as the others worked.

Brigadier Grant was pleased with the size of his opposing force. The 6th division was meant to defend mountain passes and valleys just like this one in face of a large enemy. He only wished the plan to add air-defence to the light divisions was comleted before he left.
"This should be very intresting, this is exactly what my division was built for"
ooc: As i said my first line should be around the big curve. I will send lamoni my operation plan as soon as i get back home( two and a half days).
