Shangri-La, the Community of Equallya

President Taylor, was sitting at his shoddy plywood desk, reviewing some papers on Equallya's neighbor to the south, the Republic of Wessia. Tensions had been rising for years, especially as the only water route from Lake Wintale, to the Ocean, ran through Wessia. They could effectively cut Equallya off from the rest of the world. Of late, Wessia had been threatening to do just that. Taylor was quite concerned, as it appeared as if war were on the horizon. When he reached the bottom of the stack of papers, he fears were realized. Sources in Wessia, stated that troops were moving, and the military was mobilizing. He cursed the fact that this paper had ended up on the bottom of the pile. It appeared to be days old. He needed a secretary, however, that became a paradox, because if everyone is equal, than if he gets a secretary, than everyone, being equal to him should get a secretary, which is all fine and good, until you realize that then the secretaries will need secretaries, and so on so forth. Quite quickly the entire population is working as secretaries to secretaries, and there are still some people who do not have secretaries. It was enough to give him a headache. He quickly picked up his phone, and waited for the operator to answer. "Operator, this is President Taylor, I need you to connect me with the Defense Ministry," he said.
"I am sorry, sir," said the operator. "All lines are busy, if you wish to stay on the line, I am sure you will be connected within the hour."
Taylor slammed the phone down on the desk, and grabbed his coat, he would have to walk over to the Defense Ministry. The streets were quite empty today, the only sound was a distant steam locomotive, part of the elevated train line, that served as a large part of the cities mass transit system. He walked down the block, and across the street, before arriving at the Defense Ministry. He pushed open the double doors, and entered the building. It was a short trip to Minister Halls office. "Why didn't you inform me of this when it first arrived?" President Taylor said. Slamming the paper down on the Ministers desk. The Minister looked it over. He didn't remember seeing it. He checked the date, it had been smeared, and was rendered illegible. "I don't know sir," Minister Hall replied. "I wasn't even informed of it."
"You know what this means, don't you?"
"Yes, sir, the Wessians are planning to close the river to our ships."
"We can't stop them, but we can be ready when hostilities break out. From this point forward, the military is exempt from the ration system, under Federal Code D114A-5b. Triple daily training routines, and double food rations. I want every tank, fueled, loaded, and combat ready. Reinstitute daily pilot training, I want each pilot to be up in the air, familiarizing themselves with their aircraft, for at least three hours a day. Have the navy cast off, get them out of the ports, and into the lake, where they can maneuver, and are not so closely packed." The orders went out, and the Equallyan forces prepared for combat operations. It was more than obvious what was going on, one could not hide the fact that food, and supplies were being diverted away from the public, for military use.

The Wessian-Equallyan war theater

The Wessian military of course noticed the mobilization of the Equallyan forces. Compared to their "primitive" neighbors, Wessia was rich and a paradise. The military numbered barely 50,000 men with 200,000 in reserves. But with their neighbors in state of mobilization, President Luther concluded their northern neighbor were preparing for war. The military was outnumbered for sure, but it was well trained and armed with high quality weapons. Preemptive strike was the only way to stop the certain to come Equallyan invasion. Suddenly orders went out, men on leave reported to their units, a few units of border guards were reinforced by thousands of troops. The few aircraft patrolling the Wessian airspace tripled. The navy reported to their stations. The navy was the least ready for war, but its crew were, if their ships weren't. The strike was to begin at dawn, with a hundred various jet fighters to launch a surprise attack on all enemy air bases, by flying at a low attitude to avoid radar detection. Two Wessian Armored battalions, seven infantry battalions, and one mechanized battalion were to hit the northern part of the border. The navy was to launch patrol boats onto the lake to wrestle control from Equallya. Any enemy naval ships would be met by a hail of Harpoons from the three Pegasus class hydrofoils that were recently added to the otherwise ignored navy. The remaining soldiers, numbering barely thirty five thousand would hit the southern border areas, backed by tanks and various artillery pieces and the few remaining F-4s not used in the air raid. As the attack began at dawn, Wessian spy agencies increased their effort to lay their hands on Equallyan military reports.

This war would be a gold mine, for arms dealers anyway...

Shangri-La, Equallya

President Taylor, sat at his shoddy plywood desk, reviewing tax documents, when his phone rang. Not his normal phone, but the wireless, crank operated military phone he had been given, in preparation for the impending invasion by Wessian Forces. It was early, however, the President liked to start early, it ensured full use of the daylight hours, thus saving him on his electricity ration. He picked up the phone, already predicting what was to come.
"Hello?" he said.
"Security authorization 1255432A-1b. Pack no more than you can carry. You have 10 minutes," the voice on the other end of the line informed him, before the line went dead. President Taylor pulled a large duffel bag out from under a nearby cot, it contained cloths, he had packed the previous night. He then, unlocked the top draw of his desk, and began cramming his hoarded typewriter ribbon, into an attach case along with his stocks of carbon paper, and presidential letterheads. He then unplugged all his electrical devices, closed the shutters on his windows, and hung a "Gone Fishin'" sign on his front door. before locking it. He then stood their, awaiting his secure transport, to a location, even he did not yet know.

Lake Wintale

The first line of defense, against the approaching bombers, were the ships of the Equallyan Naval Service. Which consisted of 5 Oslo Class Frigates and 62 Snøgg class patrol boats. The five frigates were on constant watch for enemy aircraft, and were the first to pick up the approaching bombers, and warn the mainland, before launching their RIM-7M Sea Sparrow missiles, at the aircraft. When they closed range, the frigates opened up with their Bofors 40mm/70 anti-aircraft guns, soon joined by the patrol boats. The low altitude of the aircraft would make it much easier for the AA guns to hit their targets.

Cape Neologism Air Base

With the reports of incoming enemy aircraft coming in from the navy, land based interceptors were launched. Fifteen Su-15TM interceptors from Cape Neologism, a coastal base near Lake Wintale another twenty from Latent Air Base, near the northern boarder with Wessia, and 10 from Kinkier Air Base, near the southern boarder with Wessia. Preparations had already been made at other airbases in Equallya, whether this meant laying down camouflage netting, or moving operations from conventional airbases, to caves in the central mountain region. The latter of which proved quite costly, as many pilots crashed attempting to land at the mountain bases.

Shangri-La, Equallya

Civil Defense teams were deployed, to man air-raid sirens, and bomb shelters. While the nation of Equallya didn't have much, one of it's top priorities, other than putting a television in every household, was to ensure that every citizen, had a spot in a bomb shelter.

Northern Wessian Boarder Region

The main attack from Wessia was expected to come through the north, where the vast, and fertile plains lay. Therefore, that was where a majority of the Army was focused. Tunnel networks had been hastily dug through farm fields. It was a generally ineffective effort however, as no real planning was put into them, and they formed a maze, with many tunnels simply stopping, for no apparent reason. 40mm Bofors L/70 AA guns dotted the countryside, though ammunition was in short supply. Of the 100,000 active ground troops, 70,000 were in the northern boarder region, with the remaining 30,000 in the southern boarder region, and an addtional 150,000 reserves defending their local communities across Equallya. Most active troops had TKB-022PM, though roughly 15%, or 15,000 were equipped with M1E5 rifles. Mostly the M1E5 rifles would see service in the southern region, not the northern however. Hiding the many T-34-85M, was nearly impossible in the open countryside, however creative solutions were found. Some were hidden in haystacks, some in barns, and still others were covered in camo netting.

Southern Wessian Boarder Region

Few troops were stationed in the southern boarder region, as the vast swampland, made travel outside of the roads nearly impossible. As there were few roads, there were few points that needed true defending. The three main highways in the southern region, were heavily guarded, with roadblocks set up, and fortified positions hidden just off of the roads, hidden well by the dense foliage.

Shangri-La, Equallya

President Taylor was only waiting outside for a few minutes, before a military truck arrived. A soldier helped him climb into the back, and stow his luggage for the trip ahead. The high ranking officials that made up the executive branch of the Equallyan government sat in the back of that truck, with 4 armed guards, as the truck drove out of the city, north towards the mountains.

The fighters, now about to encounter enemy AA guns, quickly lifted off to high attitude to avoid the AA guns. Three F-4s had been armed with Harpoons for this purpose to blast any enemy ships out of the water. Six Harpoons were locked on each frigate, the extra Harpoon for one of the targeted frigates. The first death of the invasion was a F-4 pilot, who's parachute failed to launch, so the pilot died with his fighter.

Meanwhile, the Wessian navy sent out their best ships, the three hydrofoils and six Visby class corvettes to counter attack. All of them were launching Harpoons and RBS-15 AShMs timed at the same time as the F-4s launching them. Ten modified Fremantle class patrol boats were behind the Wessian advanced vessels, keeping an eye out.

Northern Border

With wide open plains, completely flat areas, this was an ideal place for moving around, and tank fighting. The armored and mechanized battalions took the lead, send its firepower on one area, so it can achieve a breakthrough and hopefully be in Kitezh by the end of the week. Thousands of Wessian infantry were advancing behind the armored division. Some began firing mortars and self propelled artillery themselves were firing at the barns. M1A2 Abram tanks armed with TOWs locked on enemy tanks and began their firing. This would be the beginning of the battle in the north. Soon, twenty thousand reservists would arrive, but for now, they were on their own.

Cape Neologism Air Base

The remaining F-16s broke their formation and went after the Su-15TMs, firing Python 5 missiles at the approaching enemy fighters coming up to intercept.

Southern border

Wessian troops were cautious. The lead units were special operation teams who were trained to fight in swamps and coastal areas. Artillery pieces began bombarding the road blocks on the road as tanks waited way down the highway for some results. Hundreds of Wessian soldiers waited to launch their quick lightning attack on the north most highway in the swampy areas.

With the sheer number of anti-ship missiles approaching, the 5 Oslo Class Frigates, had little to no chance of avoiding them. One by one, missiles pounded the ships, two of them suffered major subsurface hull fractures, resulting, in the ships rapidly taking on water, and sinking almost immediately, while the others were heavily damaged and taking on water at a slower pace. None survived on the first two frigates, however, the other three, that were sinking at a slower rate, managed to get many of the crew into lifeboats. Meanwhile the Snøgg class patrol boats, maneuvered into position, and started launching their Rb 12 Penguin anti-ship missiles at the approaching Wessian Navy.

Northern Border

As the Wessian tanks approached the shoddily dug, but well concealed trench lines, they found quite a surprise waiting for them, when a good portion of the Wessian spearhead was in range, the order went out, and hundreds of Equallyan troops, popped up, from under hay, straw, and camo netting, and quickly launched a barrage of M72E9 rockets at the oncoming tanks, before dropping back down into the now exposed trenches. Nearby barns exploded. Some had hid T-34-85M tanks, which were now piles of scrap metal from the impacts, while others simply contained cows, horses, chickens and pigs, which became splatters of flesh and blood. The T-34-85Ms, that were exposed, only managed to get off a few rounds before they themselves exploded, from the impact of TOW missiles. Some tank crews attempted to bail, before the missiles impact but few survived, those that did, were sure to move away from the frontlines, as the anti-tank mines that had been laid down, had been placed hastily, and no one knew for sure were one might run into one, that is other than they were before the trench network, atleast they were supposed to be, but even those digging the trenches, didn't know where the trenches would end up when they were finished, one crew had actually dug up some anti tank mines that had just been placed there. The entire defense network was a mess, however, leadership skills, and tactics were well planned, even with the other short comings.

Cape Neologism Air Base

When the enemy aircraft increased altitude, to avoid the AA gun fire, they began popping up on RADAR, and when they neared Cape Neologism, the the camo netting, hiding the Nike sites, that provided it's air defenses, was stripped off, and Nike-Hercules missiles, were aimed at the approaching bombers. The SU-15MTs, also fired their Kaliningrad R-98M1 missiles at the F-16s. While the R-98M1s were slower than the Python 5s, they had a slightly longer range, allowing the Su-15MTs to fire first. Two were launched from each Su-15MT at the F-16s, one semi-active radar homing, the other infrared seeker, giving a greater chance of a hit. It was not long after, that most of the Python 5 missiles hit their targets, however, two of the Su-15MTs, survived, through great skill from their pilots. One of the pilots pushed himself and his machine to it's limits, at one point blacking out for a few seconds. Of the other 13 Su-15s from Cape Neologism, only two pilots successfully ejected. Of the two, only one's shoot deployed properly. The other had a short time to curse the person responsible for the failed shoot, before he blacked out, and sequentially died.

Southern Border

The roadblocks were heavily shelled. Few of the soldiers manning them survived, none of the equipment, or fortifications did either. However, the roads were also damaged in the process. In places, the two southernmost roads, were so severally damaged, and hadn't been of the best quality in the first place, that their foundations failed, and they sunk into the swamps. It would be quite difficult to use them now, without some improvised repairs. The northern road, however, had been built stronger, meant to be the primary road for military deployments in defense of the nation, which this was. It would be slow going for the Wessian special operation teams, moving through much of the area, entailed wading through 3-4 foot deep swamp water, infested with leaches, and other nasty creatures. The parts that were not submerged would be treacherous to, as the ground would be soft, and muddy.

Lake Wintale

Three of the corvettes sank almost immediately, but small patrol boats dispatched by the Wessian navy picked up most of their crews. The corvettes and hydrofoils continued their missile bombardment on enemy patrol ships.

Northern Border

The first of the Northern Border battle had already claimed dozens of Wessian troops lives. Tanks and anti-mining vehicles continued their advance. This time Apaches and two F-4s were used in the counter attack on the Equallyan troops hiding in the trenches. The trenches would be over-run and men buried alive in them. Artillery pieces started firing, most of them at the farms and retreating tank crews, presumably setting off a few anti-tank mines.

Cape Neologism Air Base

8 F-4s were shot down, the F-16s behind them were already heading back to base after, they fired more Python missiles.

Southern Border

Wessian engineers worked crazily on the southern roads while ahead of them Wessian troops in few IFVs that made it through the swamp started attacking the roadblocks manned by the the Equallyan troops that survived the artillery bombardment. The artillery switched aiming and fired at the northernmost road road block. concentrating as much as possible, while Special Operation teams began infiltrating the area.

Lake Wintale

The patrol boats, were small, fast, and agile. They also greatly out number their adversaries. Three of them were hit, and very little remained of them, nothing and no one that was even recognizable. Meanwhile the other boats continued to fire their anti-ship missiles at the enemy ships.

Northern Border

As the helicopters, and fighters moved in, haystacks came to life, throwing anti-air fire into the air. the AA guns had been strategically hidden, so as to take the enemy by surprise in just such a situation. On the ground, tank shells, and artillery rounds were landing left and right, and as often as not, setting of anti-tank mines. Panic struck the troops in the trenches. Many attempted a retreat through the tunnel networks, however were continuously coming up to dead ends, or finding that an artillery round had caved the tunnel in, and created an exit to the surface, which some times would put them in an even more exposed location then they had retreated from. Luckily most of this was happening underground, and what the enemy would be seeing above ground, would indicate a someone well prepared, and calm enemy. However, that was only because those troops on the front lines, hadn't turned around to see their comrades in arms had fled, or known the horrors of the poorly connected tunnel networks. The front lines continued to pound the enemy with anti-tank rounds, though many of them were dying in their efforts.

Cape Neologism Air Base

More missiles brought down more Su-15s, however, the enemy was retreating, and so it was counted as a victory. The remaining aircraft, returned to their bases, and were replaced with MiG-21bis aircraft.

Southern Border

When the artillery shelling started, the road blocks had been abandoned, thus, the enemy began attacking unmanned fortifications, whilst they were doing this, Equallyan soldiers, were flanking them, in the swamps, using local knowledge, to avoid natural perils. The northern most road block was nearly completely obliterated, half of the road slid into the swamps, leaving only one lane passable, and almost all of the fortifications were destroyed.

To: President Luther, representative of the nation of Wessia.

Subject: Assistance

Good day, Mr. Luther,

I am writing to you on behalf of several groups who are very interested in the outcome of this war, including such upstanding members of the military community, in all branches, of la Yanitarie, such as myself. At the moment, none of us see any extraordinarily appealing aspects of either country, but perhaps if, in the future, Yanitarian business interests might be given what some call... an unfair advantage... then perhaps some form of aid can be given, and we can make a few deals.

While we cannot guarantee anything, we are willing to gather up aid in the following form:

15 YA-42 "Corsaires" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14483745&postcount=7), which will have to be returned in the future.
60 Am-22 "Boucaniers" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14483748&postcount=8), which may be kept after hostilities subside.

240 WeM-30 "Sunburn" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13717541&postcount=242) missiles
--
300,000 AY-35M (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13933305&postcount=263) rifles, in varying configurations, including the machine gun variant, and chambered for either the 6.5mm JMC, or 7.5mm Yanit.
50,000 ATMY-1M (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13499310&postcount=150) Anti-tank grenade launchers, with a supply of 9 missiles per launcher.

Should you require more or less of anything, or have any specific requests, we are absolutely sure we can accommodate. Additionally, we are willing to provide advisers to train your servicemen in the use of these weapons, and, in cases such as the submarine, to covertly operate the extremely complicated equipment, while wearing the uniforms of your nation. It is imperative that these men are not discovered, or captured.

In terms of payment, we will require several measures in order to fully aid my associates in gaining the sort of business they require, in the following industries:

Arms Manufacturing
Ship Building
Aerospace
Steel working
Construction
Mining
Software Development

We will require that your government put an uncomfortable amount of pressure on these industries, locally, while rewriting the tax code to exempt companies meeting certain requirements, which we will contact you with at a later date, so that my representatives can conduct business in a less competitive manner after the war. If you are concerned that vital businesses in your post-war nation will suffer, we offer you our assurances that the transition will be quick and painless.

Should this be acceptable, deliveries via An-225 are already being loaded, and are awaiting the order to move. The first aircraft can arrive with in 2 days.

Sincerely,

Lake Wintale

The Wessian ships did everything they can to stop the anti-ship missiles from coming. Electronic jamming was taking out missile after missile but still three coastal boats sank with all hands.

Northern Border

One of the F-4s was shot down while the other F-4 launched everything they had on the now exposed AA guns, which were also being targeted by 155m artillery pieces. Two armored battalions were setting off anti-tank mines in the attempt to attack the flank of the last trenches. Two Apaches were also downed, but the rest targeted their fury on the exposed enemy.

Cape Neologism Air Base

The F-16s simple ran out of things to fire, so pulling back was not a bad idea. Wessia fighters were soon in the air again after arriving at one of the Wessian air bases and were joining the battles.

Southern Border

The Equallyans were not the only ones with local knowledge. The Wessian troops pulled back from the fortifications in case there was an ambush being planned. Wessian special op teams melted into the swamps as the battle went on. Swamp warfare would be a nightmare.
