President Martin to step down, Elections to be held

Chris Delgado for the Hemel Tribune | February 23rd, 2009

HEMEL - To a shocked and disappointed public, President Hernando Martin, just four months away from celebrating his 69th birthday, has announced he will step down from his position as President of the Republic of Aprika. The much loved reformer and maverick who is lauded as saving the nation from falling into poverty and irrelevance, spent his nearly thirty-one year term in office as an enemy of corrupt tyranny by majority and the socialist menace of Europe, as well as reforming Aprika's military might and economy into a world class force unmatched by corrupt European and North American nations.

While the move to step down and hold elections comes as a surprise, the great leader assured the nation that his motivation for stepping down is entirely that his work is done, and with the prosperity of Aprika assured and his advanced age, it is time for him to move on. At his press conference he also reassured the public that the elections would not be an opportunity for Aprika's remarkable twenty five years of stability and strength to fall, stating that his government will regulate the elections and prevent any undesirable circumstances.

"I believe that my life's work, to bring Aprika peace and prosperity, has become complete with the progress made in the last thirty years, and even more so in the past fifteen years, and I believe that as such, it is with great honour and pride that I can step down and peacefully allow transition to a new Aprikan government", Martin said on the subject during the press conference. At the same conference, Martin's 25 year old son, widely assumed to be the intended successor to the Presidency, declined to run, citing his lack of experience in politics. Martin again staunchly denied widespread rumours of his failing health as well at the conference.

In absence of a clear front runner, Field Marshal John B. Carlisle, the top Army commander and Minister of Defence since 2003, has announced his candidacy for the election. Early reports have stated that President Martin has endorsed Carlisle. A leftist movement supported mainly by a rabid online fan base and the anti-government radical organization "Democracy Union of Aprika" (Currently under heavy monitoring by the government intelligence agencies for possible illegal activities) is pushing for Aprikan diplomat Micheal E. Keller to declare a candidacy as well.

Public opinion has been one of disappointment but understanding.

"There is a feeling of uncertainty, but in the long run I feel the prosperity will not go away... Which makes me feel hopeful and willing to look at the future", Luis Torres, a 29 year old factory worker from Branston said. When asked who he supported however, his answer was less clear.

"What is the difference between them? No one knows yet, so I want to know more", he said.
