The Free Democracy of Korintar
Geography
Korintar is located on what some refer to as the mythical continent of Atlantis, or at least what's left of it after three magnitude 9.6 earthquakes and a super eruption coupled with subsequent magnitude 8 earthquakes destroyed 15% of the continent between 75,000 and 13,000 years ago.
It is bordered by the mountainous Apostolic Commune of Via Crucis to the north and The Incorporated States of Helini, located on a low, broad plateau, to the west. It is separated from Chazaka by a strait only five miles in length to the south.
The climate ranges from tropical on the southern coast to mediterranean towards the interior with a variable climate in the mountainous north. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and flash floods are common hazards. Natural resources include large silicate, iron, graphite, and silver deposits.
The southern coast, where all the ports are located, is 2400km in length. The total land area 3,840,000 sq km, with Korintar occupying 55% of the territory, while Helini and Via Crucis claim 25% and 20%, respectively.

Note: Atlantean stock is the indigineous racial group of Korintar. They are generally characterised as about 6' 6" tall and about 225lbs with brown to olive bronze skin. Their hair is either black or dark brown and slightly curly naturally. Facial features include bright, open silver eyes and thin upper lip with the lower jaw protruding only slightly. They are also characterised by a high sloping forehead. They are especially prone to IBS and melanoma when compared to other ethnic groups.
They are, in terms of culture, rather libertine, with complex marriage being a common practice in rural areas. There is a general sense of gender equality and harmony in the cultural traditions. Though concensus is encouraged in the culture, decisions can take a long time, as all sides are desired to be heard before coming to any sort of conclusions. This, when combined with a cyclical, infinite view of time can make them seem rather lazy or laidback to an outsider, but they do regard as stupid anyone who does not contribute and with the pareconist traditions already ingrained in some places, social striving is a frequent phenomena in the culture.

Constitution:
Legal System: Torah with Socialist/Common Law hybrid; constitutional interpretation based upon precedent
Executive: Directory; heads of directorates meet as executive council with one serving as Senior Director. All are regarded as heads of states under the principle of primus inter pares. They are chosen by the bureaus selecting those who scored highest on the civil service exam battery. This list of typically 20 per Director are whittled down to the top five by the legislature. Then the general populace elects those they feel most qualified through the condorcet method. Odds of elections being too close to call have been calculated .001%. Elected every five years for up to three terms. Can be recalled or impeached at any time.
Legislature: Bicameral; People's Assembly and Senate. People's Assembly is the lower house chosen by allotment of the general population, about 100,000 members. Term is 2 yrs. Senate, each province gets ten senators chosen through direct election, uses proportional representation. Individual serve 5 yrs. terms, nonconsecutive, limited to two terms. Subject to recall.
Judicial: People's Court of the Inquisition is elected directly through non partisan elections. Pool of candidates are from lower courts. This supreme court has the authority to establish lower national courts and their jurisdictions and to order the arrest of high government officials. Also it has the right of judicial review concerning any law, regulation or plebiscite. Its decisions can be overturned by constitutional admendment initiative. Serves 30 yr terms, subject to recall.
Suffrage: No restrictions, except minimum age to vote in national elections is 21 yrs (also eligible for
any public office at that age). Locally, 16-21yr olds can vote in someplaces, typically as a half-vote. Voting is compulsory.

Korintari Fascist League- outlawed radical group. Atlantic racial supremacy and extreme militarism combined with corporatist economics are the key views of this ideological faction. Suspected that foreign nations fund this group which has been known to commit terrorist attacks and attempt coups. Also known as "Korintari Free Justice Legion". Bespin Tubari, a radical platonist, heads the organization.

Economy
Peacetime Structure: The Korintari economic structure is pareconist in nature. Thus the structure is that a system of nested worker's and consumer's councils make decisions about what should be produced and how. These councils are made up of the entire work force of Korintar. There is remuneration according to effort and sacrifice, thus hard work is rewarded. Furthermore we have balanced job complexes to stave coordinatorism. This happens to apply to our military, btw, as well. Concensus based decision making is key.
Wartime Structure: Wartime Economic Authority referendum states:
A) All civilian, consumer manufacturing must be defer to military manufacturing.
B) Directory proclamations take precedence and can rescind the decisions of the industrial facilitation boards
C) w/c councils are suspended until further notice.
D) All those not currently employed are to be pressed into service either as factory workers or military personel
E) 100hr minimum work week established.
F) Foreign corporations are to be expelled, by force, if necessary, from Korintar.
G) Protective tariffs not lower than 150% of the value of foreign goods are to be immediately established.

Air Force (often a substitute for Navy) 12.5 million personnel
Defenders: Main military vehicles, armed with heat rays (currently in development by US mil, btw), jamming devices, laser and sonic weapons, along with conventional lethal weapons. Can be equipped to fire nuclear, biological (Ebola, Anthrax; Small Pox), and chemical weapons (primarily VX nerve agent). Has rotating shielding to protect against attack, but takes 1 hr to completely refigure. Crew of 150, top speed is Mach 3.7. Can reach altitudes of up to 75,000 ft.
Transports: Self explanatory as towards purpose. Armed with basic late MT+3 anti-aircraft weapons, beyond that it has minimal protection. Relatively slow; Mach 1.5 is the top speed. Can hold up to 200,000 soldiers plus needed equipment. Max altitude 35,000 ft. Not really fuel efficient, but improvements are always made.
Axex Helicopters: Think Apache helicopter in 2150 and you get an idea of what these vehicles are capable of. Often used to transport high-level diplomats, government officials, and rescue teams.

Notes: First of all Korintar's military is mixed tech as not all branches developed at the exact same rate. The local militias, despite being massive, are armed with PreMT to MT weaponry, while our regular army is equipped with weaponry that is generally late MT to early PMT technology. Navy is basically MT, soviet quality, due to lack of development or use as the air force was developed sooner in Korintari history, but after its destruction in the last war it is recieving a serious update. The new fleet will be based upon a strategy of sea denial, although it will be equipped with advanced weaponry, including railguns. Air Force and Space Defense Corps are definitely PMT.
Secondly, the structure of the armed forces, with the exception of the natikodi, is very democratic, thus the lack of reference to ranks or divisions per se. It is democratic in the sense that each city has volunteer forces that train on a regular basis and those forces elect officers to facilitate discussion and moderate disputes. These officers can be recalled if they fail to do their duty. All the officers meet as a council to meet and discuss matters and to elect a senior officer that will supervise the meetings, this senior officer has no authority to command soldiers not under his direct charge and has the same role as other officers. Most ships have their own constitutions or charters for how the ship is governed. The navy is ultimately governed by a council of ten admirals which report directly to the Security Director. Air force bases act fairly independent of each other and coordinate activities with the Security Director acting as a facilitator. Furthermore interbranch activities are coordinated by the councils under the guidance of the Security Director.

History I, Pre-Korintari Era
Prehistoric: From 74 mya to 22 mya the Cerymbasic and Atlantic continents were unified into one massive continent. During the mass extinction at the K-T boundary, medium sized reptiles that would later evolve into the Draconis family of reptiles in Atlantis sought shelter in the caves of the northern mountains. Around 22 mya the continents proceeded to split into two land masses, isolating the dragons from the outside world.
Ancient: After the great earthquakes finally severed Cerymbasia and Atlantis, early humans began to settle the continent 17,000 years ago. This early culture has come to be known, in the West, as Atlantis. Now Plato's description was a bit inaccurate for the Atlanteans were never, truly, unified into a single nation, nor was earthquakes and tsunamis the cause of their downfall. Instead, as these nations grew and developed they expanded into new territories seeking resources, and conquering native peoples. Then 5,000 years ago a prolonged drought occurred, cutting the population to a third of its size. Also due to hyperextension, their navy was obliterated by disgruntled natives from the Mississippi River valley to the Nile River in Egypt.
Dark Ages: for nearly 3,500 years Atlantis slipped into a "Dark Age" as little literature was produced and military might slipped. Atlantis split into several tribal regions and city-states. One of these was Korintar.
History II, the Rise of Korintar
Monarchy: The Kingdom of Korintar arose around 490 A.D. as a collection of six city states and 8 tribes unified under one ruler, King Smrikon I (491-537). By all accounts Smrikon I was regarded as a great leader who unified Korintar with Confederation of Psaduin in 501 A.D. He implemented a parliament, similar to the one used by Psaduin and removed the powerful nobles from the government, thus allowing the people to govern themselves on a local level. His son, Iruskao, continued his form of governance for 74 yrs. His brother, Karisul, succeeded him. Karisul's reign was one of terror and he was assassinated 15 yrs into his reign. Following him was Smrikon II, actually a young noble man. Under Smrikon II Korintar converted to Christianity. Though Smrikon II was a respected ruler during his reign, there has been much to suggest particularly violent palace intrigues. He ultimately abdicated his throne after 65 yrs. to Espuri, a weak man who could not command the respect his predecessors did. He ultimately committed suicide as the stress drove him to insanity, thus ending his 27 yr reign. To his benefit, it was during King Espuri's reign that dragons were first used in warfare by heavy cavalry, setting the stage for the modern Korintari airforce. Thus began a 248 year period of warfare. The peasants, seeing the intrigues of the nobility, grew agitated and overthrew their masters in the Revolution of Fire in 966 A.D.
United Socialist States of Korintar: After the Revolution of Fire the leaders of the communities realized that to avoid conquest by their neighbors a new government must be formed. Using the old monarchical government as a guide these bishops agreed that wealth based power led to intrigue, thus bad governance. As a result they established a socialist republic, the United Socialist States of Korintar in 987 A.D. This system involved a president elected by the state legislators and a Senate made up of the governors elected by the legislatures along with two representatives of the people to hold the Senate accountable. The right to initiative was given to the people, but tyranny was just around the corner.
coup- In 1437, it happened. A military coup ousted the USSK government and established a communist dictatorship. This government, run by Asapu Oriko, suspended the constitution and ramped up the armed forces and pressed every citizen into service, thus unifying the whole island under one government for 250 yrs.
restoration and secession- In 1688, the junta fell as its nationalized infrastructure began to crumble and people started protesting and resisting. Famines compounded the problem. Thus the USSK was restored as a result of the Ecclesiastical Revolution led by Bishop Myastik Uliz. Even though the country was restored the peoples of Helini and Via Crucis Mts grew restless and had chafed under the rule of the junta. As a result the Republic of Via Crucis was established in 1702, as an explicitly Christian Socialist state. Fighting erupted between the two nations which continued for 65 yrs. Helini, on the other hand remained a part of Korintar for another 120 yrs, until it too seceeded in 1867. Unlike the events surrounding Via Crucis' departure, the events involving Helini were suprisingly peaceful. In 1883 the three nations signed a mutual defence and priority trade compact, thus a sign of unity between three, often opposing, nations.
Free Democracy of Korintar: After so much unrest, it was realized in 1912 that a new constitution was needed as the old one was ineffective and allowed for too many power plays and too little freedom. The current constitution was ratified in 1946.
Rukmen-Korintari conflict, betrayal- Sabadin Mylxnori, Korintar’s former Security Director conspired to commit treason and seize control of the government. To do this he, working with a young Rukmen terrorist, promoted conflict between Rukmenistan. It should come as no surprise that this man was descended from Asapu Oriko. Mylxnori was ultimately executed by nitrogen asphyxiation and succeeded by T’blis Oltavi.
Mewsland Incident- This war, in which Korintar played a minor role, witnessed the end of one era and the start of a new era as Korintari Sr. Dir Zakir Myosin Sezadu III retired from public office and T’blis picked up Sezadu’s mantle as Director of International Affairs.
Grand World Order vs Stoklomolvi Conflict has been brewing between communists and fascists for quite some time now. It finally came to a head in the World War. Korintar was officially neutral in the conflict, however paranoia gripped the nation as it too prepared for warfare. By mere accident a Korintari merchant ship the Prosperity crossed into Chazakainian territory and it blew up over Chazakainian waters due to mysterious causes. Chazakain was allied with Grand World Order, a fascist nation, at the time, and Korintar recently joined United Worker’s Republic. Needless to say fighting ensued due to the fact UWR was a leftist organization that was backing Stoklomolvi. Though casualties were relatively few; it was the first time in Korintari history that Korintar had been attacked on its own soil by a foreign military.

Education
Length of School Year: about 240 days long
Divison of School Year: Trimesters (first Trimester begins the first non Sunday after New Year's)
Compulsory Age: typically 5-17 yrs old, special circumstances can allow for 7-15 yrs, minimum (rarity).
Daily Schedule: Block Scheduling, most Korintari students have no more than five classes a day; each class is two to three hours length with average schoolday being about 8-10 hrs long.
Student/Teacher ratio: 15:1 (considered a large class in many schools)
can be as small as 5:1 in some schools' advanced courses.
Requirements for Graduation:
Language: ability to read, write, and speak fluently in the three main languages of Korintar, fluent is defined as the ability to pick up any novel or textbook in any of the three languages and be able to explain its contents in any of the three languages.
Mathematics Proficiency: understands order of operations; uses whole numbers and fractions properly; grasps concepts of prime factorization and mathematical postulates, and uses them to solve complex problems; understands basic logical operations and notation; and understands basic concepts of geometry and trigonometry.
Religion: Comprehends tenets of the three Abrahamic faiths; shows understanding of history of relationships between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity; is able to explain the role faith plays in politics, esp, at the local level.
Phys Ed: meet fitness goals for size, gender, and medical conditions, as described by the student's physician; mastery of basic health concepts (organ systems, structure and function; nutrition; importance of exercise; puberty; dealing with conflict; emotions; relationships; and hygeine); and understands one or more martial arts at a proficient level (in other words able to keep oneself alive) and can wield a knife or other weapon to defend oneself.
Civics: can describe characteristics of the following: Monarchy, Democracy, Imperial Republic (aka presidential/congressional republic), Parliamentary Democracy/Republic, Aristocracy, Anarchy, and Meritocracy; understands differences between confederacy, unitary, federal, and federacy structures; understands and can differentiate between the following economic systems: socialism, communism, social market/social democracy, capitalism, laissez faire, corporatism, participatory economics, syndicalism, mutualism, and cooperative economics. Can comprehend basic Atlantean geography (able identify capitals, major rivers, mountains, nations, climate, major cities, et al.) Can explain Korintari gov't, politics, and economics to others.
