The Four Heatons

Stuart White stepped down off the Bus onto the Tarmac. He was at Fort Hood, Four Heatons Army Training Facility. The sun was shining and there was a slight breeze. As he stepped aside to let the rest of the bus off he looked around. There we’re barracks buildings and lots of other buildings obviously for other means. Behind the bus was the Main gates to Fort Hood which was manned by armed Guards. From one of the buildings a man walked over. Dressed in Disruptive Patten Material the Badge on his Beret glinted in the sunlight. He stopped a few metres from the bus load of people.
“Get your Lazy Arse’s into one straight line!” He suddenly shouted the assembled men and several women. The group launched into movement and twenty seconds later they were in a ‘more or less’ straight line.
“I’ve seen better of the Police” The Soldier snapped as he walked down the line “Atten-tion!”
The More intelligent of the group figured that they needed to stand to attention, as they’d seen off the TV and movies. Off the entire line Stuart was the only one who had the correct Attention Stance.
Stuart had been a member of the Recruit Training Corps for five years, and had turned twenty four weeks ago and had enlisted in the Four Heatons Army. He had recognised the rank insignia on the Soldiers uniform to be that of a Captain. As the Captain walked past him he raised his right hand to his head in a salute.
“What was that?” The Captain asked him, stopping walking.
“It was a salute sir” Stuart replied realising he had the sideways glances of the entire line.
“I know what it was” The Captain replied “Why?”
“Your an officer sir, it’s respectful” Stuart commented.
“Hmm” The Captain said moving on. Stuart let out a breath as the Captain moved on along the Line.
Having inspected the ‘new recruits’ the Captain was satisfied that they’d at least try.
“Dismissed” He said standing to the side. When only a few people moved he sighed.
“That’s army for get moving” He Snapped at the ones that had remained still.
Two Sergeants came over from the building and led the group towards the nearest building. Once inside all the recruits were given, combat boots, DPM trousers, T-shirt and Jacket.
“Over to the Barracks!” The Sergeant ordered. The Other sergeant took them over to an empty barracks block and gave them each a cot and a locker. Once the Sergeant left the group got about changing from their Civvie ware into the uniform they had been given.
“How did you know he was an Officer?” One of the Male recruits asked as he pulled of his Civvies T-shirt.
“RTC for Five years” Stuart replied “I’ve had that drilled into my head for years”
“I thought he was going to hit you” One of the Females commented.
“So did I” Stuart admitted.
“FALL IN!” The Captain called from outside.
“That means get in a line again” Stuart told the room and they all rushed outside and lined up.
“Well at least you all look the part now” The Captain said dryly taking a box from a nearby Corporal, he threw a Beret from the box to each of the recruits.
“Now as hotshot here” The Captain continued pointing at Stuart “Showed us earlier, I am An officer and you shall salute me and any other officers that are on base, you will be provided with a briefing kit by the Corporal”
The Corporal went around and gave each recruit a folder.
“Alright, you are all to be out here in twenty minutes” The Captain ordered “We’ve got some training to do, FALL OUT!”
