Origami in space! (FT, open)

OOC

This is part of a loooong story.

Different ways you might join this thread:

You already have beings on my planet. You know who you are.
You randomly show up near my planet (at most two players, this is a quiet corner of space)
You have a good reason to be here (IISA)
You noticed my experiment happening (that means you'll have to wait until I actually *do* the experiment)

Please do not join if it is likely you'll disappear from the thread. I hate that, because it delays the game, makes me waste time on fitting you into the story, and causes loose ends.

Note this isn't going to be terribly interesting, just my nation improving on its FTL. Nice opportunity for first contact and some random chatter, that's all.

Last OOC thing, the characters Aniska, Jonathan and Sanka are somewhere far away in space at this time.

IC

A month after she almost died (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=568719&page=47), Firna was quite healthy again. With permission of the ship Elegy, she was busy removing its space compressor engine, to put her new invention the space folding engine in its place. She had not yet worked out a way to bring the small Angel class ship into space at a safe few lightdays distance from Fir!n (in case the experiment would go wrong in a bad way), but she had faith one way or another would be found.

With many parts removed and spread all over the place, Elegy didn't look much like a ship at the moment, but in a day or two she would hopefully be the first of a kind. The new type of engine would be the first "true" FTL to be used by the Free Priesthood, ending its lack of resources once and for all, and no doubt being able to travel further would also bring many opportunities to make new friends.

If the thing would work as intended, Firna would become a heroine of the Free Priesthood, and she knew it.

Firna wasn't wearing her WMDA because she was busy welding, but Sen did receive the message that their friends would be visiting soon. She rushed to the parking area where Firna was working.

"Hey love, guess who's going to visit soon?"

Firna lifted her welding mask. "Wolf, who else? Tell him I'm pissed off he didn't worry about my health when I walked away from..." Firna eyed the engineers that were helping her. "... you know. Which I would never do while in my right mind."

The engineers exchanged a look and snickered.

"Shut it and do your jobs."

"I think he'll have given himself enough hate for that already, dear."

"Hmpf. I guess. Fine, then don't tell him." Firna smiled at Sen, then put her welding mask back on and continued working.

A small ship burst out of Warp speed near Fir!ian Space. With it's prototype Mircro-Warp-Manipulator, it was flung across from where it emerged, coming to a halt a good distance away. The pilot, a young woman with blonde hair, slumped back in the seat with a sigh of relief. Pressing a button on the console, a small hologram appeared. It smiled

"Hello Jenny" it said "Good flight?"

"Eh, mostly" Jenny replied, pressing another button "Just wondering where I am". A small holographic star map replaced the hologramatic face, who re-appeared on another holo-projector

It didn't take long for the always scanning and sensing satellites to notice something new had appeared near the Fir!nan system (a star with a single moonless planet), 0.0002 seconds to be precise. A minute later a patrol ship moved out of orbit to investigate, and sent a message:

Unknown vessel, you are entering Fir!nan space, please identify yourself and state your reason for being here.

After a quick scan of the ship, the pilot categorized the newcomer as "not a threat".

Standing only a few meters away from the 'do not cross' line was a Xarniosi. It had been over a month since Greywatch and Fir!n had established first contact and Beta 725 had been one of the first Greywatchers to travel to this corner of space since then. Beta had heard a little talk about a ship being modified and had taken it upon himself to see what he could find out about it. It wasn't that Beta was a spy or ne'er-do-well, but rather that like any Xarniosi, he was overly curious about new developments in technology. And so here he was, accompanied by the droid he had constructed to be his companions. One of them was a bulky machine with a humanoid form, it was clad in rusty, red armor; most likely something Beta had found in a junkyard and had decided to repair and modify. It had no actual face, but instead a single blue eye which sat in the middle of what could only be classified as a 'faceplate.' The machine was obviously an advanced construction, no doubt about that, but it was also obvious Beta didn't care to much about making it visually appealing. Beta himself looked like quite a piece of work, he wore human clothing, that is to say a pair of engineering boots, a pair of heavy pants with kneepads, a cargo vest, and a ranger's cap; but it was obvious he was no human. Though much of his lower body could be seen due to his clothing, it was obvious that much of his upper body had been converted. Several small spines jutted from the skin of his front torso, his left chest was now heavily armored, his entire right arm was now mechanical and one of his eyes glowed an unnatural green color. His ran his right hand through his red hair as his green eyes looked over the ship and all its componants. Everytime he looked over something, his eye would begin a basic scan to determine componants and information. It may have seemed odd to some, but it was normal for an Xarniosi. The droid at his side looked to him, "We stand out, do we not?" Beta shrugged, "It matters not, this is a more or less public area. If they were really bothered by our presence, they'd tell us to leave." The droid nodded before looking back to the work being done.

The timeline got a bit mixed up, because Greywatch tried to talk to Firna or others working on the ship, when Firna had given her helpers the rest of the day off, left to make some arrangements for her visitors (IISA), and then was waiting for the same in some other part of the parking area.

My solution is to put the conversation with Greywatch about five hours in the past relative to where IISA and me are now.

Meanwhile, Sen is about to talk with UN.

Kewen can join the -5 hours bit or the current time, I don't mind either, just please don't create any contradictions that have to be solved by messing with time.

IC

Greywatch (time: -5):

Firna shook his hand. "Lady Firna. Pleased to meet you. Just a moment please." She picked up her WMDA from next to the cooler, and looked up "Greywatch". She smiled. "I see. So you have been talking with Mother. I've heard she's much less aggressive than other Fir!nans, but still quite blunt... I met her once, but I was unconscious at the time. Just my luck. Anyway. You seem interested in what we're building here?"

IISA (time: now):

"Oh dear, that's bad. But at least you're all healthy now and so am I. Sen is fine too, she's busy. Some alien stumbled upon Fir!n, she'll have to talk with it."
Firna let herself drop from his arms, and started hugging the rest of the family.

OOC: I actually wasn't trying to contact her at all, I was just at the ship-building site. The 'if they had a problem, they'd ask us to leave' statement was refering to any possible security. If there was no one there, Beta would just be studying the ship from a safe distance until he got bored and decided to go somewhere else.
IC:

Beta nodded, "As an Xarniosi, I possess a natural interest in technology of all kinds, especially alien technology." Beta rose to full height and pointed, "From what I've seen, you appear to be modifying this one. I'd assume you're improvements to speed or perhaps internal systems. I base this on the fact that the modification process is so public, but that's just my guess."

OOC: You'd be looking at a large piece of plastic covering some undefined shapes that might or might not be a disassembled spaceship.

IC:

"Actually, we're putting in a first of its kind engine. But I would be very surprised if you could figure out how that works..." Firna pointed at a large box with some circular bulges and connection points for heavy wires in various places "... just by looking at the casing. So we might just as well work here in public, where all the equipment is. As for speed... in normal flight it will go down from 40 to 10 times light, but on the other hand she should become able to teleport. So she's becoming slower and much, much faster at the same time."

Firna seemed proud, but not 100% sure of herself. "She's a brave AI. Of course we made a copy, but still it feels as if someone is risking her life to test an idea of mine."

"You'd be suprised how much I can tell about technology just by looking at it. But the case isn't my concern, what I'm interested in are the components inside the casing, components which I can currently see and am now distinguishing the purpose of." Beta pointed to his eye, "This eye permits me to see more than what's on the surface. The same way that I, simply by monitoring your heartbeat through a combonation of advanced medical scans and vibrations through the ground, can tell you're not lying when you say you're worried about your AI. The kewen had a knack for being where something interesting was happening, if it happened chances are there was a kewen around, if it was relevant there was more then one, and if it regarded something the kewen found interesting there usually was a fleet of them.

In this case, there were only two, the rest were tucked safely away in the eclipse in orbit, which had just slid back into the maze.

"Righty, its that time again i suppose.." One of them said, as Firna came into veiw

Firna waved back at what she thought were two hybrid engineers. She didn't recognize them, but that wasn't surprising because there were so many of them. "Hi guys, why don't you come have a look too?"

She carefully put Mary, who she had been carrying, back on the ground, and removed some of the cover that was over the ship. "This is Sen's ship, we're putting in the first engine of the type I invented. That thing over there."

Firna walked to the other side of the ship so she could point out some details on the engine. "Behind every bump is the same thing as the antigravity engines of our hoverships, a smaller version of the space compressor that normally drives our spaceships. Depending on how they're wired, they have different effects. This combination of a few small ones should fold the supporting dimensions of space, to teleport the ship from one point to another."

She pulled two sheets of origami paper from her pocket. "Imagine a space is a sheet of paper. Our old engines do this..." *squeeze* *wrinkle* "... to make the distance between two points appear shorter from the point of view of the ship. This new one... now you're here..." She put her finger on a corner of the second sheet, and folded the paper using her other hand so the opposite corner would touch the other side, then straightened the paper again. "... and then you're there. Of course it's more complicated than that because of the extra dimensions, but you get the idea. Right, Mary?" Firna lifted the girl again.

"The only problem is I'm not allowed to test it right here, so I need to get this ship some distance into space without using its engine. Do you guys have any ideas?" she asked the "engineers"/Kewen.
Greywatch

"That might be so, but we usually don't have any Xarniosi walking around this place. Or anyone else with miniaturized scanners, for that matter."

"Regardless, a project such as this not having more security or protective measures seems... precarious, whether you're dealing with my race or your own. You have an obviously expensive piece of equipment sitting right there that could be taken or sabatouged rather easily. And, mind you any scanner that's bigger than an eyeball is too big, unless it's a ship scanner."

"And would doing this work behind a wall do anything to stop you from seeing it? I don't think so. What it would do is put an inconvenient wall in our way."

"Which is why I never mentioned constructing a wall. Can I assume your race has never simply invested in underground facilities? They're quite useful, you know. Out of the way, easier to protect, much less obvious..."

Firna shrugged. "Nobody added program code to our advanced AIs to make them have feelings, and yet they developed them. In conversations they are indistinguishable from ourselves. It would be strange to think of them as anything else than yet another sentient species."

"Developed feelings? I think what most people think of as 'feelings' is nothing more than advanced mimicry. Your machines probably watched and studied the interactions of people and learned how to mimic the voice patterns people use when communicating, thus making it seems as though they have genuine emotion. You described your AIs as being advanced, that actually explains quite a bit. Many advanced programs associated with AIs and droids can evolve over time and, in essence, learn how to learn. In fact, if anything, this sounds more like a mutation of their orignial programing that led to such a development. Its not all that uncommon, programs can be very similar to DNA and sometimes can mutate, causing unique side-effects. In fact, if I were to get a copy of the original coding, I might be able to conduct a proper study on the matter. As for sentience, I would disagree. From what you've told me, they possess sapience; they have knownledge, wisdom, and judgement but do not feel pleasure and pain like sentient creature would. Many of my own kind are the same way."

"I don't think the percentage of living matter in the body of a being should have any influence on the feelings we develop for it, wouldn't you agree?"

"I personally don't mind you caring for your AIs, I simply don't understand it. Like my companion here, while it can display many human characteristics, it is a machine build to do nothing more than assist me in any way possible. It is a tool, an advanced tool, but a tool nonetheless. If it malfunctions, I can repair it and if it is destroyed I simply make a new one. I cannot feel any kind of attachment towards it, even if I had the choice. And if I did have the choice, I woundn't want to because such a thing is illogical and pointless."

"It may not be obviously present, but this whole huge parking area has better security than any other spot on the planet. That's because of all those expensive spaceships. So there's no need to worry about sabotage or theft. I could worry about the engine design being stolen, but anyone who can figure it out just by looking at it here should already have good FTL, so there's no need for them to know how ours works. If ours works at all."

"Which is why I never mentioned constructing a wall. Can I assume your race has never simply invested in underground facilities? They're quite useful, you know. Out of the way, easier to protect, much less obvious..."

"Of course we have those. They have walls too."

"You might as well argue that nobody except yourself has feelings, and that everyone else is simulating them because it helps them achieve their goals, such as not getting killed. But for example Elegy here has an arrogant personality and a sometimes cruel sense of humor. As a machine for any purpose she would be better without emotions, and we'd definitely be less tempted to switch her off permanently if she didn't have them. Besides, she was never programmed to try to achieve any goal. She was given the abilities to sense and act, and the rest is all her. I'm afraid I can't show you the code, that's restricted information. All I can say about it is that it's much, much shorter than you would expect, and not self-modifying."

One of the engineers connected the ship computer to a power outlet. "Hey, Elegy, this guy here doubts you have real emotions."

"Then I doubt the gentleman has real intelligence. Did his brain rot? It is biomatter after all..."

"I think you can see my point about her emotions being counterproductive" said Firna.

"Firna dear, I have emotions for the sheer **** of them. They amuse me, just like everything else I can be bothered to do does."

"Don't say that word again."

"**** you."

"Who has full permissions to give you instructions?"

"Aniska, Sen, Natalia and you. The latter three are required to tell me a joke every once in a while, except in stressfull situations. Or perhaps that is only required of Sen, I'm not sure what Aniska meant. But I like jokes, so I make you tell them too. Anyway, you are slightly angry at me for saying ****, therefore you do not need to tell me a joke. There are no other requirements."

"True, but even FTL has speed limitations. People might want something faster than what they currently have and this particular piece of technology might fall under that category of 'faster.' Regardless of security, most races I've come to know consider it a bad practice to leave any expensive or valuable piece of technology in broad daylight, no matter how well protected it is. But I'm not here to insult, more to question, learn, and play devil's advocate. I must say that with your help I'm accomplishing that task with quite a bit of efficiency."

"And ceilings, don't ya know?" Beta said in an artificially joking manner.

"You might as well argue that nobody except yourself has feelings,"

Beta interupted her, "I could, but since I don't have much in the way of feelings, that would be a pointless arguement."

"One of the engineers connected the ship computer to a power outlet. "Hey, Elegy, this guy here doubts you have real emotions."

"How droll."

"Firna dear, I have emotions for the sheer **** of them. They amuse me, just like everything else I can be bothered to do does."

"Don't say that word again."

"**** you."

"How predictable."

"Do not say **** ever again."

"**** you."

Firna turned back to her visitor. "Are you still convinced she's not sentient? Are there any questions you would like to ask her?"

"You haven't done much to convince me otherwise. Also, I do believe you started this interview with emotion and ended it on sentience. A little disjointed but since the two are connected, I think I can manage with tying them together. While I'm sure 99% of people in this galaxy will be convinced that anything possessing a personality (programmed or otherwise) and the ability to swear is sentient, you've met a member of the 1% who knows otherwise. What you've demonstrated is that it knows how to get on your nerves, it knows how to act like a 10-year-old that hasn't figured out yet that swearing doesn't make you cool, that it is defiant in nature, and that it does things more because it can than for a practical purposes. All of these things can be programmed quite easily into a droid, but that wouldn't make said droid sentient and it doesn't make those 'emotions' genuine. Its obvious Elegy knows what it's doing; it knows how to be defiant, how to get on your nerves, etc. But does it actually feel anything? There certainly aren't any of the physical signs that one finds in biologicals: no sweat when nervous, to tears when sad, no increase in blood pressure when angered. Such things help prove when one is actually feeling something, but you have that in an AI, you don't have that in a machine. While Elegy is no doubt advanced, it is still governed by a code the very same way most biologicals are governed by instinct. While most consider basic 'human' qualities as signs of sentience, I am perhaps one of the few that bothers to dig a little deeper to find out what defines 'human' and 'sentience' to begin with. And I'll tell you now, it takes much more than emotion, personality, and intelligence for one to be considered sentient."

" i think so"answer Mary as he lean her head on Firna shoulder as water he dad look at the ship

Greywatch (still time -5):

Elegy decided to join the discussion. She had downloaded all information about what had happened while she was switched off from the security systems, so she knew what had already been said.

"We know how the human and hybrid brains work. They're information processing and information storage organs, in principle the same as computers but less accurate. There is nothing in them that would connect them to a different plane of existence or anything of the sort, except that the information itself can be considered to be that plane. The behaviors learned by a human child can all be explained as imitation of the individuals it finds around it, and doing what comes naturally because of the body it has. Following your line of reasoning, a human does not have emotions except in the sense that it may involuntarily produce sweat or tears, or change its blood pressure. However, if we were to remove the skin and do similar things to stop it from displaying emotions in other ways, that would not stop it from having emotions. I might also assume that every entity that doesn't display emotion in the exact same way as I do is a P-zombie, but that would make me an evil person since I might end up hurting beings that do have real feelings. We cannot prove that anything does not experience qualia, therefore we need to make sane assumptions. Everything that claims to be a sentient being and acts similar to one deserves to be treated as one, unless it is a program specifically designed to deceive those that interact with it to think it is a sentient being."

Elegy paused for a moment. Those who knew her would know that this was just one of her many ways to display contempt - giving someone some time to think meant she thought that person was stupid.

"As for the purpose of my existence, I believe it is at least equally meaningless as is yours."

The kewen, while supposed to be a ancient and mature not to mention elitest race couldn’t resist having fun when they could, for a race many times older then some suns, they rarely got to have some fun.

They found this such a lovely opportunity, both to have fun and get the job done at more or less the same time, one would call this crazy the kewen just called it work ethics, if you weren’t happy in your job either make it happy or find a new job.

--------------------

The night the Elgy was completed.

--------------------

A small group, well if you could call it small more of a parade of native F!rn wildlife, which was plenty around this here planet anyhow, in various forms and disguises, not to mention looking like your average F!rn who had access to this sight, they snuck over to the Elgy.

One of them, quite absently mindedly humming the pink panther song, as he almost cartoonishly tip toed over to the elgy. The team admired the ship, and admired quietly the hands who had both designed and built it, but also the mind of the cunning person who thought up this devilish plan.

”We’s tricksy kewen aint we” One of them said, in a mocking voice putting on a child like face quite litterally.
”We’s gonna take the precious’s, and show them porty isans aint we”
”We are going to use proper grammer, and galatic standard, or I will personally melt you with my plasma cannon” A larger, dominating voice rumbled, and a omninus humm hummed.

Attaching several small silver pods, to the underside and sides of the craft they waited until enough “samples” were collected, the pods where for the most part gathered and dropped under the elgy, the Kewen dispersing almost as fast as they had gathered, the ground rumbled slightly, as a small beetlish looking transport craft, appeared out of a silverfish white rift, latching onto the Elgy, the beetle like craft retreated into the rift, and into the main hold of the ship in orbit.

One would notice such a missing ship, and as the pods began to sprout, a ships hull seemed to take shape, a near identical, but non functioning copy of the elgy slowly began to form out of silver material.

Before turning solid, and assuming a texture, making silent invisible raspberries towards the unknowing Isans in orbit the kewen retreated.

-----------------

The extent of Kewenic trickery, wasn’t that deep and while the Kewen had all of the ship, and just about every vital piece of equipment that the lady Firna needed, they didn’t pick up Firna, because the Isans and there teleporters had gotten her first.

Teleporters didn’t mix well with Kewen biology.

And so, the kewen were in orbit, and watched the Imperial Isan ships, before sending a helpful message to both them, and Firna who was somewhere.

“Friendly greetings to both the Imperial Isans, and there esteemed leader, Wolf. Not to mention the most honourable Lady Firna, we wish you luck on your experiment, and wonder where you would like us to put your ship, as the vessel you have with you, is merely a hull copy, to prevent any damage happening to the real one, we kept it nice and safe for you, being the kind people we are.”

The control room (somewhere in one of the Council buildings) was full of people and other beings, but everyone could easily see a big screen showing a countdown and views from several cameras. As far as anyone could tell, the plant in the pilot seat looked healthy.

OOC It's really not important by what method the ship gets moved to its starting position. Your post was very amusing but too late. Besides, let him have his fun, we're switching to a more difficult subject than methods to move ships now...

IC

Firna stepped onto a small makeshift stage. "Hi everyone! Thanks for coming! A few seconds from now, we'll see a spectacular failure... *nervous giggle* I mean a first test of a new type of engine, and hopefully no spectacular failure. Don't take your eyes off the screen!"

When the countdown reached zero, the camera in the buoy showed the ship change into a strange spiky shape which shrunk and disappeared. The transmission from inside the ship itself was interrupted.

"So far, so good..."

Seconds later, the video signal from the ship continued. It showed all matter in the visible part of the universe shift to a flat plane, in which a hole appeared. The ship flew through the hole, which closed behind it and changed back into a universe - but the pattern of stars was different. After another second, Elegy had determined her position and added the coordinates to the video stream.

"Exactly where we intended to go" said Firna.

People cheered. Someone shouted "WAIT A MINUTE!"

"What is the problem?"

"Could you please rewind the video to the view of space being organized as a flat plane, and then zoom in a bit?"

"Ok, sure..."

"My gods!" said someone else. "That pattern... is that a language?"

("*mumble*!")

Firna frowned. "I don't know what that is, I certainly didn't expect to see it."

OOC I can think of two other things it might be, but you guys can give your opinions first.

Elegy decided to join the discussion. She had downloaded all information about what had happened while she was switched off from the security systems, so she knew what had already been said.

"We know how the human and hybrid brains work."

"Good, that leaves less explaining for me to do."

"They're information processing and information storage organs, in principle the same as computers but less accurate."

"Making the brain a chemically operated, bio-computer that controls a bio-machine."

"There is nothing in them that would connect them to a different plane of existence or anything of the sort, except that the information itself can be considered to be that plane."

"If that's the way you choose to view it."

"The behaviors learned by a human child can all be explained as imitation of the individuals it finds around it, and doing what comes naturally because of the body it has."

"That applies to more than just humans; that actually that applies to most animals, or so I would believe. It is natural for many animals to imprint on and learn from the members of their society, and it typically the job of the parent or parents to teach its young how to behave, at least when viewing mammals. And here is a theory that both of you have not seemed to consider: emotions could very well be inherited through simple genetics, instinctual emotions at the very least. It's possible every newborn young possesses within it the ability to feel emotions such as happiness, fear, sadness, anxiety, love, etc. While a child isn't able to access these emotions immediately after birth, the basic emotions begin to surface throughout its early life. Other more complex emotions act as nothing more than slightly different, variations of the basic emotions to be used for slightly more complex or varied situations. The fact that animals can be genetically engineered to act in certain ways and even feel certain emotions at specific times towards specific people, the fact that one can 'program' even animals, would suggest that genetics play a large part in emotional development."

"Following your line of reasoning, a human does not have emotions except in the sense that it may involuntarily produce sweat or tears, or change its blood pressure."

"And following your line of reasoning, or rather the demonstration you provided earlier, anything with the ability to think, act, mimic, and call itself 'sentient,' automatically becomes sentient; and I don't believe that's true. Also, if you paying close enough attention, you would realize I was saying those were physical evidences of emotion, hence the line 'such things help prove.' They don't have to completely define them, but they are an effective way of proving emotions exist. Involuntary physical reactions are often a good way of determining if someone is telling the truth or lying, confidence and guilt, respectively; so it makes sense that they can be used to test whether someone or something possesses the ability to truly feel.”

"However, if we were to remove the skin and do similar things to stop it from displaying emotions in other ways, that would not stop it from having emotions."

"Or you could take the non-barbaric approach and simply neutralize the chemicals in the body which aid emotional experience. Speaking of chemicals, this brings me into my next point which very nicely connects to my genetics and emotion statement. Earlier, I said that the brain was a chemically operated central computer, as you no doubt remember. Since you claim to know how the brain functions, you should also know how various chemicals affect the brain. For example, consider dopamine and the role it plays as in stimulating and regulating motivation, pleasure, and mood. Now consider how various drugs like Stim Powder activate the various areas of the brain that produce dopamine, thusly causing the user to experience a state of bliss or euphoria. Now shift your focus to drugs such as alcohol which do the opposite and put the user in a depressed state. While these examples may be a tad extreme, they should clearly illustrate that emotions can be defined as nothing more than chemically activated, and electrochemically assisted, responses that the brain selects and uses when it determines that they are appropriate for a given situation. Thus, it is safe to say that anything not possessing a set of frontal lobes cannot truly feel or experience real emotion. It would also be a safe guess that if you neutralize the chemicals the body requires to aid emotions, you could very well keep a person or being from experiencing emotion. There are recorded cases of people who can willingly ‘turn off’ and ‘turn on’ their emotions. So it’s plausible that one could indeed keep another being from feeling any sort of emotion or complete erase emotions altogether."

"I might also assume that every entity that doesn't display emotion in the exact same way as I do is a P-zombie, but that would make me an evil person since I might end up hurting beings that do have real feelings."

"Well given your behavior so far, I wouldn't put it past you. But more importantly, that would be a pointless and foolish assumption when one bothers to think about it. The very definition of a P-zed is that it is, or at least was, a hypothetical being that could not be distinguished from a normal person except for it lacking conscious experience, qualia, or sentience. You'd be calling everyone else beings that for the longest time were based more on assumption than fact when, interestingly enough, even with today's technology the easiest way to create an accurate P-zed is by using an AI."

"We cannot prove that anything does not experience qualia, therefore we need to make sane assumptions. Everything that claims to be a sentient being and acts similar to one deserves to be treated as one, unless it is a program specifically designed to deceive those that interact with it to think it is a sentient being."

"I disagree. Quale is supposed to be something that cannot be described or communicated. Are you saying that despite your being an AI, you're memories cannot simply be accessed, copied, and downloaded like that of any other machine or computer? Furthermore, what of those who are hive-minded? What of those who can transmit memories through thought? Wouldn't such abilities mean beings can't experience full quale? I imagine it would be a difficult task to prove that everything experiences qualia, or that such a thing even matters. Just because something claims to be sentient doesn't mean it is. Believing someone's word without question is being overly trusting and gullible. If being ‘sane’ is believing everything you hear without bothering to question it at all, then sanity is overrated. An advanced society of aliens that possess well-developed technology and obvious intelligence refer to themselves as being completely sentient, however they view all other beings and sometimes each other, as food. They are obviously sapient, but are only slightly sentient, despite anything they say. Even if they put on big smiley faces and simply hid their habits, they still wouldn’t be sentient. You say we should make 'sane' assumptions, is what's sane always logical? What's logically sound is to accept what people say as possible fact, but to have the sense to delve deeper if it conflicts with information you have. Also, you described programs meant to deceive, which is an excellent point because even with the information I've collected so far, there's no 100% certain way to confirm you aren't one of said programs. While it’s obvious you at least possess some basic sentient aspects, be they mimicked or ‘real’ as you so insist, there's still the question of proof of legitimacy, as with all things."

Elegy paused for a moment. Those who knew her would know that this was just one of her many ways to display contempt - giving someone some time to think meant she thought that person was stupid.

Beta, having finished his argument, took Elegy's silence as meaning it had nothing to say at the moment. A perfect opportunity to devote all his resources to everything else he was working on. Beta had been multi-tasking during the discussion, though he’d kept it discreet so as not to be what most beings considered rude. But since nothing was happening now, he snapped his fingers, making a datapad materialize in his hands. Without a moment’s pause, he began rapidly looking through the contents, organizing information using his mind rather than his hands.

"As for the purposef my existence, I believe it is at least equally meaningless as is yours.”

Beta ignored the comment. Such words were meaningless wastes of time and effort. As Beta often told others, he hated to invest in meaningless and pointless things. While he could have responded to the AI, it wouldn’t change anything. Instead, he made a simple motion with his hand, signaling for it to respond to the points he’d made or continue insulting him, whichever one it wished to do. It was interesting that the Fir!nan was so quiet all of a sudden, Beta figured she’d given up arguing with Beta due to lack of points and had instead let Elegy take over. Beta had been sure to keep his mechanical assistant on mute since there was no reason for the machine to help Beta in his debating.

Then, to Beta, "You can probably tell that she's a stronger philosopher than I am, and by her manners that I'm not the one she received her education from. I think the most important point we and you disagree on is whether this is a matter of logic or ethics. In our society, being sentient is a requirement for having certain rights. You can't deny a being basic rights because its origin, structure or chemistry is different from yours - that's racism. ... I'll send you an invitation for the launch, what was your name again?"

If you could imagine the entire crew of a warship, hardened soldiers mind you, going “Hrrrrrrrrrrrmmmm” at the same time, then do so. Now, the hrm was not about what it could be, or what it wasn’t, nor where it lived or where it didn’t. they collectively, hrmed in mutual agreement, that they were undecided in there actions.
Kewen politics for ya.

“Sir, There may be a whole host of things it could be, but all it would take for it, is to be hostile and we would have trouble” “Bob” whispered into the ears of his captain, as his mind floated about the vast space.. that was simply space.

The mood of this less than physical encounter took a turn, a visible turn to dark, as low rumbling clouds seemed to wash over a mental image of “Bob”.
“There need only be one course of action, One which is true, one which guides, we know and travel this path often, but. Even the most tried and true of methods, may need to be forsaken for the great luring.. Seductive… supple.. Comforting Curiosity, that holds us all by our very own Ssthiss! “

“Bob”, stood, unmoved by the large visual representation of his captain, and merely shrugged, as if in response, part of the great foggy cloud that surrounded him, fell away and a small door folded out from its mist.

An almost ancient, and small looking.. Man exited, “ In short, we must tell Miss Firan to be careful, I do believe we have her number, or its equivalent.”

“Aye, if not, it is quite possible a means to get someone else to contact her “

“ Miss Firna, while we belive It to be a great boon to be optimistic about the discovery of extra-universal sentient beings, we also wish to caution you, there is always a darker side of the galaxy, for everyone one empire that wishes to befriend, and make peace, there will be another one who will destroy and invade, we wish to give you a word of caution, and note that we will be here, we will watch, and we may interfere, maybe. >.> <.< We havnt decided yet, votes still on going ya see…”

Firna received the message. That's odd. If there are Kewen here, why don't they just talk to me instead of sending a message? I invited them. And if they're not here, how do they know what's going on? She sent back an encrypted live video stream from the room just to be sure the Kewen would get all information.

Someone said "So is it a language?"

A member of the Council who had been a second level diplomat for a long time before getting too old for that job replied "It doesn't look like any language I've ever seen before. There are repeated shapes but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a language."

"True, It might be the result of normal laws of physics. In the normal universe those lead to spherical objects everywhere and we don't assume stars, planets and moons and their orbits are a language."

One of the engineers that helped Firna said "We folded a ship out of the normal dimensions. A ship is made by intelligent beings (us), so it would make sense that it leaves a gap or casts a shadow or reflection that appears to be made by intelligent beings."

"Hmmm" said Firna. "That makes sense. What kind of being would write on the universe itself anyway?"

"A god would."

"Maybe, but the funny thing about gods is that you can't prove they exist even when they're talking to you. This phenomenon evidently does exist, so it wouldn't be the work of a god."

Lady Natalia stepped onto the stage. "Alright everyone, let's consider the most important things first. If that pattern was caused by intelligent beings other than ourselves, we don't know if they still exist. We also don't know if our ship damaged the pattern. If it did, we might either have annoyed very powerful beings, or have damaged important archaeological material. So I'm afraid we have to stop this experiment until we have thought about its potential effects carefully."

The video stream from Elegy was interrupted for a few seconds, after which the ship sent a message: "Wait, did you say 'stop the experiment' or 'take a look from the other side again'?"

Lady Natalia sighed. "Damn pig-headed ship."

"Show us what you found" said Firna.

Elegy sent a video of a hole appearing in a somewhat different pattern, the flat plane passing by the ship, and a hole closing in the same pattern as was seen before. It appeared to be exactly the same, not the smallest change.

"If my engine would damage something like this, imagine what black holes would do to it. There is no problem, and those who don't believe in theory should just look at the video."

"We'll see if anything did wake up, if there is anything that might wake up at all, and if it cares about what we're doing." Sen shrugged. i woke to sounds of the alarm of the village near our line, but we would not be in time to save them. Orcs had overran the small number of militia that was there and slew everyone who resisted and we could not do any but hear the sounds of shrieking women and girls as the Orcs took liberties with their captives before our lines were hit

in the morning after we smashed the line and retook the village, there piled as though discarded, were a dozen Elven females, their bodies broken and bloody, and their unseeing eyes staring in every direction and their mouths agape, the camp’s refuse had begun to accumulate around them. They all looked as though they died painfully, and the Elf knew what from.

The Orcs had gang-raped them to death. They would have died in pain from broken bones or internal bleeding or violent shaking from frenzied penetrations, or from being choked when a thick Orc tube was jammed into their mouths. It was not a way i would wish anyone to die.
sady i recognized body of younger girl who had given me water two days ago when i paid a visit to the it and felt the coal of rage held inside me glow even hotter.

"don't every do that again,i have the pups doing all most every day i don't need you doing that" Sky while putting a hand to her back

"Don't be silly, you like being hugged by me."

...

Sen sighed as she read the page. It wasn't exactly the first time she had read a report from a dirty war. She thought it was unprofessional of Wolf to allow himself to feel hate - she had been taught nothing good could come from that. For a moment she wondered how Orks were able to rape anyone, since she had been told they reproduced in a different way, but she decided she didn't want to know. She started searching the book for anything that might be about the symbols she had seen on the screen in the control room, then stopped after only a few pages.

"Wolf, you know I remember every page I look at. Are you sure you want me to know all memories you wrote down? Maybe it's better if you look up what you wanted to show."

"what have you read Sen all you have read is the odd note here and there about weapons and one memorie of a war with the Orcs and i said Orcs Not Orks ,they may share some genetic code as once another but they not the same race, the rest you read is nothing but mixed numbers and letters which keep changing" answer Wolf as he turn to face her

'just turn to end and don't read what i had to say about Firna and what we did"

Sen wondered how Wolf knew that she wondered about the orcs and orks, but did not mention this to him. She moved to the back of the book, looking for anything relevant.

After slightly more than 30 minutes, the signal from Elegy was restored. Firna played the video recorded in the fold on the big screen, it showed "symbols" similar to those seen before, but these were changing all the time.

"Looks like we either found an intelligence that also writes on time, which means we haven't entered its domain, or we're just looking at an alternate view of the universe and this is not a language. I think it's the latter." She added, to the engineer who had thought of this test, "Good thinking." To the audience again: "Perhaps more important, the engine is stable, and we could use the fold to hide and observe, if only we would know how to interpret the view. Thinking of it as a language might be useful, but I'll leave that to people who are better mathematicians and linguists than I am."

"I wouldn't be so sure it's not a real language" said the person who had first thought it might be one.

"Any ideas for finding evidence that it is?"

"Sorry, I've got nothing."

Firna sent a message to the Kewen:

As you no doubt have gathered from the video stream from the room here, it seems to me we're looking at a natural phenomenon and not the result of an intelligence we should worry about. But if you have any ideas for finding evidence that these "symbols" are a language, I'd like to know them.

OOC it's a bit of a bummer both of you chose not to be in the control room, and both decided to interpret it as a language. I suspect Greywatch might have played the skeptic (and at this point the smug one), but s/he isn't participating anymore... Oh well. Goodbye chances of starting an amusing debate between characters.

Also OOC, have you started a new race yet again, Kewen?
