I've decided that a RP based on the RL Cod Wars could be good change of pace to all the massive wars on II these days and wanted to see if there was any interest.

The basic premise is that the massive Tolvanic fishing fleet is straying close to another nation's waters as the strict fishing quotas in place to prevent overfishing in Tolvanic waters has cut into the fishermen's profit margins. The offended nation will deploy it's navy or coast guard to combat the illegal fishing and the politically powerful fishermen will pressure the Tolvanic government to deploy ships to protect them. This will lead to some stand-offs diplomatic wrangling and maybe a few small skirmishes.

Anyone interested?

I'm pretty interested. The Cod Wars were...unique. Plus, we need some good diplomatic wrangling on these forums.

The odd thing about it is that my 'state' formally is just a consortium of corporations, with a lot of de facto power. So, that will be another wrinkle to throw in.

The most likely spot would be in the Macclesfield Bank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macclesfield_Bank); another alternative would be along the Chatham Rise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chatham_Rise).

I'd start it off with a new law being passed by the (CoDC-backed) Chinese or New Zealander government handing over rights to the fishery that will be at the hub of the dispute to Pearl Foods, for it to operate and manage exclusively; enforcement is to be handled by the company's private security force. Pearl wants to focus on managing the fishery's stock, so it limits the amount of fishing using the sale of yearly individual fishing quotas (mostly to employees), which are based on estimates of the total fish population and are meant to maintain a stable fish population. Trouble is, its enforcement abilities are strained already, due to a (temporary) lack of funding (and the accessibility of the area (if it's the Macclesfield Bank) to ships and boats all over the Confederacy).

Also, no reason this couldn't be happening in multiple countries.

I don't typically like to RP with RL nations, however if one of the others who expressed interested is ok, I have no problem with you doing much the same as you mentioned above with their waters.

No, I know, and I was just joking around.

I'd join the whaling thread too if I could come with a plausible IC reason to do so. There's not a lot of demand for whale meat in a nation located in the Carribean, I can just run down to Antartic Waters if I want.

Since we have multiple people interested, I see no reason why we can't involve multiple nations in the RP.

I'd be interested in helping the offended nation(s) or possibly being the offended ones.

All right then, here's where we stand:

Chazakain and myself will supply the encroaching fishermen.

Ursava will be one who's fishing grounds are being encroached upon.

Novus Prosperitas will back Ursava.

Stok will send a small group of trawlers if he wishes.

If this is acceptable to everyone, I'll start working on getting the IC thread up tomorrow or so.

I hope you don't mind, but I decided to take the initiative and write NP into the storyline early. My thinking is that it would only be possible for me to play some direct role if I had already established a presence in the region and initiated relations with Tolvan or Ursava.

As I am keen to be on Tolvan's side (and this would probably make the most IC sense given Tolvan's background and NP's own), I thought I would begin with a goodwill visit by a Prosperitan naval frigate to the Home Islands. From there NP can get dragged into the conflict with Ursava.

However, if you would rather I take Ursava's side, I can re-write my post. Or we can figure something else out.
