Scientists at Battleford University's Department of Advanced Applications of Fission announced today the success of the PDUHR-1 experimental pile. The PDUHR-1, Photodisintegration Ultra HEX Reactor was described in the words of Dr. Howell, head of the Spizanian contingent of researchers: "Imagine a subcritical breeder reactor...That doesn't run on any conventional nuclear fuel. "
The reactor, explained to this reporter in the simplest, unclassified terms possible, works by decelerating a 300 MeV beam of electrons (generated by means of a Ausserordentlichhochgeschwindigkeitelektronenentwickelndenschwerarbeitsbeigollitron) magnetically, causing the production of ultra high energy x-rays, interacting with a thin liner of depleted uranium . The resulting cascade of "slow" neutrons works something akin to alchemy to materials placed in this "drum" of materials. Professor Popov (Battleford, PHD Advanced Nuclear Science '67) went on to explain a little further.
"We can even breed tritium with the external water radiation slash cooling jacket if we want. Honestly if it wasn't for Spizanian expertise in these areas and Juuman funding this wouldn't have happened." However, he warned somewhat ominously: "For reasons of security and proliferation laws we cannot reveal too much of the background of our research, however the need to have a large and expensive breeder reactor complex for the purpose of constructing atomic weapons has possibly come into conflict with a new generation of subcritical breeder reactors, far easier to construct and operate stealthily then anything before."
When asked about rumours of high level talks between program members, the office of the Imperator, and elements within the Chazakan and New Tipperite governments, a two word answer was given.
