OOC: I proudly ask a DUMB question!

I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I am a virgin to this game and all others like it. I am intrigued by this game but I have one question that I can't figure out, and remember, I have never participated in a game like this before. My question is, could someone explain to me or point me to a doc that will explain role playing outside the game, for example war?

Believe it or not I have never heard of this before and would like to learn about it. It looks as though people take their role playing pretty seriously so I thought I would ask in the general forum. If I asked anywhere else I thought I might get shot! :)

The place for virgins is International Events. And in the game.

Gameplay is the proper forum for these kind of queries. However... there are some topics up in the International Incidents and Nation States forums that will help. Also, you could post this query in either of those role playing forums just add a OOC: before the main part of the title.

And see those "We declare a war on XYZ for no reason other than our racism" threads?

Those are a perfect example of what NOT to do.

OOC: There are some threads that are at the top of this forum and on the NationStates sub forum. We call them stickies. They have helpful suggestions on roleplaying, including links where you can learn more.

They really run the gamut from introduction to NationStates roleplaying to (relatively) advanced treatises on military strategy if you're so inclined to learn them.

Here's what I hope is a helpful suggestion on what to do with a declaration of war. Start your declaration of war thread with a post in which your legislature or your cabinet debates the issue over whether or not to declare war. An alternative is to roleplay your national leader's declaration of war or his or her speech asking your legislature to declare war.

As an example of the debate in the legislature I suggested, I propose a post I wrote (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=441069) for my 2005 war against Pantera.

And I will be the first to say that there is far more than just war and or nations that can be role played. In fact just look at the name: Role Playing- taking / making a character ( and yes a nation ) and bringing them to life.

The stickies at the top of the forum are very helpful as has been mentioned, but there are also any number of Games running that have nothing -or not much -to do with war or national interests- you might want to take a look at :

Tom Clancy, Robert Heinlein and many other others have written books that deal with the theme of war, but which have decent, good and sometimes memorable rosters of main characters. Likewise, war RPs don't have to be limited at describing things from a Bird's Eye View and posting lists with the numbers of ships, soldiers etc being deployed(which are called ORBATS). It's not easy to have both, but character, nation and war RPs are not mutually exclusive. I started cliché one-dimensional redshirts in rip-offs from war movies scenes to "Silent Hill meets Saving Private Ryan", and although I cannot really call what I did original, it's in many ways more rewarding than setting an unnecessary divide between war and character RPs.

Fall Schwarz (http://forums3.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=558258) - MT tech War/Character RP

Aiming for Heaven though Serving in Hell (http://forums3.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=564685) - Mixed Horror and MT War/Character RP

The easiest way to combine both is to have a general as one of the main characters, thus allowing the details of the conflict to be informed when they are relevant.
