Based on the proven AIM-9 Sidewinder, the AAM-97 is a longer, wider version of the same. It takes the capabilities of the AIM-9X and places them in a larger frame, providing a longer range and a heavier warhead. Variants include the lidar-guided AAM-97L [in development; data provided is provisional]; the SAM-97, SAM-97S and UAM-97, guided by IR, lidar (ship-launched) and fiber-optic (sub-launched); the ARM-97 anti-radar missile and its cheaper, weaker cousin the ARM-97D; and the AAM-97H, which uses the Hercules Mk.58 motor to achieve higher speeds and altitudes.
