[OOC: Okay, I've had a lot of false starts at getting back into NS, but I think I'll actually stick around this time. 'Openish' in the thread title means diplomatic messages to Misley, Caelapes etc. that will start this storyline won't require invite or anything but depending on how things evolve I might close the thread to new parties.]

CAELAPES CITY, DEPARTMENT LAPES
EXECUTIVE BUNKER, UNDERNEATH PARLIAMENT
10:59 A.M.
3 YEARS, 7 MONTHS AFTER BEGINNING OF MISLEYAN REBELLION

“Three, two…” the cameraman held up one finger and then pointed, indicating that the live broadcast had begun.

“Good morning, Caelapes; world. I suspect my face is an unfamiliar one, and I imagine that the thought of an unknown man coming into your homes and shops via government television override is a worrying one. I ask you, good and fair people of Caelapes, to stem your concern. I am Jordain Clement, General Secretary of the Vanguard of the People’s Voice and your new Prime Minister.

“Over the past three years, the Libertarian government has done much to damage this nation. By mishandling a struggle for independence, the Libertarians have betrayed their true cause and brought a shadow of despair to our lands. We are separated even now from our brothers and sisters in Misley—not because the people of Misley or the people of Caelapes wish to be apart, but because men in suits deigning to assert their representation of the will of the people have willed it so. The political and social elite of this country, so driven by their greed for land and capital, have betrayed the foundations of government almost irreparably. It will be many months, many years, before the wrongs of the Gati-Dolard-Rylander Libertarian government are righted.

“But despair no longer. Together with the Communist Party of Caelapes, the Progressive Party, and even the Conservative Party, a vote of no confidence was passed and the Libertarian-majority Parliament was dissolved. Now, three months later, the true results of the nation’s first general election in seven years are results that the people of this nation can truly be proud of.” Clement smiled into the camera and continued.

“There are many pressing issues that deserve the attention of government,” he began. His brow drew down and his forehead wrinkled with concern, “but none as urgent as the war of aggression against Misley. Though the Misleyans are our brothers and sisters, literally for some of you watching and figuratively for all Caelapenes, it is no secret that the—to be blunt—‘fuck you, got mine’ policies of the Libertarian government drove the suffering labor population of Misley to desperation. It pains me greatly that the Misleyan people saw no success in any other avenue of action, and I am ashamed for the government’s unwillingness to cooperate with Misleyan negotiators.

“Effective immediately, Caelapene aggression against Misleyan targets will be halted. All Caelapene troops are to stand down and return to Federation territory at once. Caelapene diplomats have offered an olive branch to Misley—an offer to return to the Federation status quo antebellum with focus on improving relations, infrastructure, and social programs in the war-torn department. I understand that this may not be a tempting offer to the provisional Misleyan government, which is why I am also prepared to declare Caelapene recognition of the sovereignty of the State of Misley and to open positive diplomatic channels with the Misleyan government.

“Caelapes has existed as a nation for centuries. Our existence has been hard-fought, our institutions have been tested, but the good of our people has prevailed and will always prevail. Our national motto, dum spiramus tuebimur, is Old Caelapene for, ‘while we breathe, we shall defend.’ I solemnly swear to the people of this nation, to the people of Caelapes and our brothers and sisters in Misley; to the people of the world and realms beyond our own: While I breathe, I shall defend. I shall defend this nation from internal strife. I shall defend this nation from foreign aggression. I shall defend our legacy as a compassionate and understanding people. I shall defend the rights of every man, woman, and child in Caelapes regardless of race, color, creed, class, or status. Together, we shall march into the vast uncertainty of tomorrow and chisel the vibrancy and life of Caelapes into the stone of history.”

A moment after his last words were uttered, the picture cut to the Great Seal of Caelapes and, across the nation, loudspeakers began playing the Federal Hymn.

[OOC: Yep. Second semester of my senior year and half of my classes are music classes, so I have time to do Nationstates again. I'm going to assume that you're messaging Caelapes because it wouldn't make much sense for Dr. Hodz to be getting all up in Misley's grill.]

Caelapes City

Dr Hodz,

When I was informed that this Government had been contacted by the Lord Protector of Akimonad, I immediately summoned Rachelle Kentwood, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Akimonadi Mission. She and I discussed the nature of Akimonadi-Caelapene relations at length with Foreign Affairs Minister Simone. I understand that the alliance between Akimonad and Caelapes was forged at a time when Caelapes was ruled by the Libertarian Party and may have therefore reflected the economic, rather than social, goals of our nations at that time. I also understand that the emergence of a socialist Caelapes may threaten the alliance between our nations.

I hope this is not the case. Though we may not agree with the other nations' economic system of choice, the bonds formed between our people over the course of time should not be so tenuous that a change in government would be enough to break them. I look forward to renewing diplomatic communications with the Akimonadi state, something even the Libertarian Party ignored in the past few years as it waged war on the Misleyan people.
