Xeraph Annexes Four Eagles

"Good morning, this is Terry McSherry coming to you with a Special Report. Early this morning the troops of The Empire crossed the border of the Grand Duchy of the Four Eagles. Armored units of the 6th and 88th Mountain Guard entered the capitol of Four Eagles. No resistance was reported.

General Rick Gorlois, commander of the Imperial troops, met with a hastily-convened Eagle Council and presented the Terms of Annexation to the currently reigning Duke, Antoine Mosca. The Duke asked for, and was granted, a two-hour, closed-door, meeting with his advisors.

After an hour-and-a-half of discussion and deliberation, Duke Mosca opened the doors of the Council Chamber and presented the flag of the Grand Duchy to General Gorlois. The General thanked the Duke for his decision and returned the flag to Mosca.

The Grand Duchy, located in the far southern reaches of the region of Mercenary Lands, had been recently formed from the remnants of the old Empire of Koth, vanquished almost 300 years before by the late Emperor, Alaric Tan'it and Eric Valtane of Verboten Luftewaffe.

The occupation of Four Eagles will be a short one. Duke Mosca has pledged full cooperation with the Xeraphian authorities and will personally aid in the transition of power.

The Grand Duchy has a small standing army of approximately 4,500 soldiers and a dozen tanks. It has in addition a destroyer and a missile cruiser. The airforce was in the planning stages when the annexation took effect. It is not known at this time if the new rulers will continue with the development of the airforce.

According to the information handed me by the representatives of The Empire, the Grand Duchy will be occupied by forces of three of the nations of the Empire:
6,000 Xeraphian Marines
8,200 ShadowGuard from the Tribal Kingdom of Black Shadows
12,850 Serpent Warriors from the Tribal Legions of the Black Katanas

In addition to the Armored Units of the 6th and 88th Mountain Guard, there is to be a small naval task force in place. One battlecarrier, one battleship, and two destroyers will anchor offshore in the Bay of Koth. An undisclosed number of Siren II submarines will patrol the waters.

That is all the information I have at this time. As the situation develops, we will come to you with the updates.

This is Terry McSherry for XNN News. Good day."

Sethanis paced the room like a caged tiger. "Three goddam weeks and no reaction from any nation on Terra? It's unheard of! The last time we did this they were protesting right and left!"

"Chill out, Seth. And count your blessings. The situation will make the annexation of the next two countries all the easier." Prince Vlad of The Grey Phoenix resumed looking over the latest reports from the southern portion of the Empire. "If you want some action, get your ass down to the Four Eagle-Long Knives border. Seems there are some patriotic citizens of Four Eagles getting with some tribal chieftans of the Borderlands of The Long Knives."

Seth glanced at the report. "Doesn't look like anything to worry about. A couple of gunships would take care of them."

Vlad shook his head. "You'll never learn, will you? If we kill 'em all, then we'll have no excuse to push into Long Knives. This gives us one."

Seth nodded. "Quite right. When do we move?"

"Well, John's in charge. Ask him. He's itching to kill something almost as much as you are." Prince John Strickland, Lord High General of the Xeraphian Forces, had been awarded the nation of Four Eagles as his personal domain. "Tell him if he'd like, that he can venture into Long Knife territory and add that country to his new Kingdom."

Seth said, "Are there any other pissant little countries down there we need to 'annex'?"

"Not at this time, no. But we could save ourselves the aggravation of annexation in the future by simply occupying the rest of the southern portion of the region. That'll add about 220,000 square miles to the Empire bringing the total to over 1.23 million."

"Yeah, but if I'm not mistaken, there's a large portion of that area that's just swamp and desert", said Seth. "We still have to deal with that pain in the ass country of Ssyn that Amra's all worked up about."

Vlad smiled. "You dope. It's all connected. The friggin' Kotites were up to their asses in the goings-on of Ssyn over 500 years ago. There's a lot more to this than meets the eye, my friend."

"Okay. Enough jibber-jabber. I'll get with John and we'll move right through Four Eagles and into Long Knives. We'll eliminate anyone who doesn't like it, eh?"

"Sounds like a plan. Go for it."

Thirty-six hours later, air and land forces of the Empire were advancing through the nation of the Borderlands of the Long Knives. Resistance was minimal and quickly dealt with. The capitol was just a day away......

Commander DeMolay peered through the binocs, assessing the enemy's potential to cause him aggravation. The capitol of Long Knives, such as it was, appeared to be virtually undefended. Surely the people of the city knew the Xeraphians were there. How the hell could you miss fifteen thousand Royal Marines, ShadowGuard, and Mountain Command troops? Not to mention the half-dozen Beowulf MBTs and multi-vector VLS batteries? No, something was amiss here.

Turning to his aide, he said, "Major, your thoughts."

Major Chris Younger was noticeably older than his superior. He'd been through many a battle over the years. Had, in fact, fought side-by-side with Alaric Tan'it, late Emperor of Xeraph on more than one occasion. "Well, Commander, I sees it dis way." He stood rubbing his three-day growth of beard. "Methinks we're being spied upon by more of the enemy than is apparent. Methinks we are being led down a primrose path by an enemy who is a wee bit wiser than we are giving him credit fer. And methinks that the one and only answer to this dilemma is to shell the city. Kill everything that is alive down there. Leave no question in the minds of these upstarts as to who is the boss here."

DeMolay glared at the older man. "A bit aggressive, don't you think? It's perfectly obvious that there isn't a hell of a lot going on down there. Why should I destroy the city?"

Younger grinned and said, "Here comes your answer, Commander", as he pointed at he northern quadrant of the bright blue sky. DeMolay followed his aide's finger and saw not one, not two, but no less than four light grey trails of exhaust behind the missiles headed right at his troops........

Six CV-90 APCs of the 34th RCT moved forward to the Xeraphian front lines.
Captain George Hardgrave commanded the small unit. over his headset a voice was heard. "Owl 3 to Owl leader, I don't think we are supposed to get this close to the front Sir. According to my GPS we are about 2 miles ahead of our halt line."
"Roger Owl 3, just want to get a closer look at the city. I know we are only observers but we have not seen any action in ages. Besides no one is shooting anyways."
"Not shooting My ASS, a missile just missed me by about 2 feet. I am taking fire repeat I am taking fire."
"Roger that, Attention all Owls. Button up and return fire, repeat button up and return fire."
With that order the APCs began returning fire with their 40 mm cannon.

Demolay began barking orders, rapid-fire. "All VLS units! Take those missiles out! TanKorps Commanders to move forward into capitol of Long Knives. Ground troops follow at five-mile interval. I want a squad of Rattlesnakes to strafe major activity centers of that town, Pythons ready to drop payloads at my command."

The enemy missiles were taken care of in short order, and it was noted by Demolay that the Tarlagians were in secure control of their sector. "Captain, radio the Tarlag commander that we are appreciative of their actions of this day in the face of the enemy and request that they proceed to within 1/2 mile of the walls of the enemy capitol."

"Sir, I have a small group of enemy soldiers headed this way." The comm-worker frowned. "Sir, it is a group of six, two of which are leaders of the armed forces of Four Eagles. The are on horse-back waving a white flag."

Demolay stared incredulously. "On horse-back? Who are the others with them?"

"Apparently officers of the army of Long Knives, sir."

"So, elements of Four Eagles are aligned with Long Knives. Send a dispatch to HQ with this info, captain, and get a Hummer down here. Have a squad of ShadowGuard and a couple of Spiders ready to roll in ten minutes. I'll personally meet with these people."

"Aye, sir."

The Prince waited patiently for someone from Xeraph to come forward. He and his entourage were thin, bedraggled and weary. They had been harassing the enemy occupying forces for almost a month, to virtually no avail. Their robot-troops were indestructable, relentless, and were now ringing the walls of the capitol city of the Borderlands of Long Knives.

The Prince had brought about three-thousand troops of Four Eagles with him, soldiers who could not live with the thought of being 'annexed' by a foreign power. They knew they hadn't a chance against Xeraph and their robots. He looked around at his soldiers. The Knives were not much more than nomads, sitting around camp-fire councils and deciding what the next move should be. The city was a left-over relic of the old Kothite Empire, destroyed by Xeraph around 400 years ago.

A scout interrupted his thoughts. "My Lord, someone approaches." The Prince looked up and saw a small contingent of heavily-armed troops following an armored vehicle. Two of those accursed eight-legged robots flanked the contingent.

They pulled up just thirty feet from the flag-waving Eagles. The Prince slipped off of his horse and stared at the Xeraphians for a minute. "To whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?"

The Commander leaped from the Hummer and walked directly towards the Prince. When he was ten feet from the rebel leader he said, "My name is Jaques DeMolay of the Xeraphian Empire. I am commanding the troops you see behind me." He paused. "Who are you, and most importantly, do you surrender?"

The Prince's initial urge was to run this peasant through with his sword. He remained calm, however, and with a good deal of composure replied, "I am Prince Guillaume von Krassner, heir to the throne of Four Eagles. What you ask is impossible, as my cowardly government has already surrendered our sovereignty to Xeraph. I will turn myself over to you provided you do not harm any more of my followers. Do I have your word?"

Imperial Lady Irene Milano had been observing events of this international tension, and she was worried. She turned to her scribe and said,

"This political shift worries me. But this is also a great time to step into the world stage. Contact the leaders of Xeraph and the Four Eagles. I would be interested to know if they would like to establish a treaty, maybe here in the republic"

"My lady," the scribe started "Will the Senate approve?"

"I think so," she added. They trust me with re introducing our nation to the world, this act of diplomacy can only help. Send the message"

Captain Hardgrave walked over to where the leaders of the two sides were talking. Thanking God that his screw up did not cost any lives and that the Xeraphians thought his move was a desire to go on the offensive instead of just observing.
Moving to the back of the Xeraph contingent he waited for their leader to accept this mans surrender before speaking.

DeMolay relaxed.....just a little. With a barely discernable grin, he turned to the Lieutenant in charge of the Xeraphian forces and said in a low voice, "Put the Prince in chains. Kill the rest."

He strode back to the Hummer, hearing with a grim pleasure the shots that killed the Prince's retinue. He reached into the vehicle and grabbed the comm-mic. "Captain McElroy. Commence the destruction of the enemy forces in that wretched city. Do as little damage to the infrastructure as possible. I want the people dead, the city intact."

A voice crackled over the line. "Aye, sir. Assault to commence in twenty minutes. We should be done in less than 12 hours."

DeMolay tossed the comm-mic back into the Hummer and grabbed a four-foot length of galvanized pipe. He turned to see the Prince being dragged towards him, chains around his ankles and wrists. As he was dropped into the dirt, he gasped, "I thought you Xeraphians were people of your word. Why have you done this?"

The commander signaled his men to stand the Prince onto his feet. "For one thing, Your Highness, I never gave my word about anything. For another, you are a treacherous son-of-a-bitch. Your government gave THEIR word that there would be no resistence or repercussions concerning the annexation of your nation. And now because of your treachery, not only will your fellow rebels die, but all of the pathetic soldiers in that town, Eagles and Long Knives." He walked to the Prince's side and took a swing at his legs, causing Krassner to fall to his knees.

DeMolay spoke. "By the power invested in me by the Regents of Xeraph, and in due consideration of your admitted rebellion against your rightful leaders, I do hereby act as judge and jury and to further hereby condemn you to death. Sentence to be carried out immediately."

Without further comment, DeMolay brought the length of pipe down upon the exposed head of the Prince, cracking his skull open, blood and brains splattering those standing nearby. Before Krassner even hit the ground, the commander brought another vicious blow to Krassner's jawbone, splintering it into a half-dozen pieces, many teeth falling into the bloody dirt. Incredibly, the Prince was still alive, making horrible sounds of intense pain.

Breathing heavily, DeMolay said, "String him up by his heels and let him bleed out." He threw away the length of pipe and glancing over to the waiting Tarlagian said, "You wanted to see me?"

Lady Milano,

On behalf of the Regents of the Barbaric Empire of Xeraph, I take note your concern over the situation between us and the nation of Four Eagles. We have lawfully and without prejudice annexed that country, and are in the process of assimilating their neighbor, the Borderlands of the Long Knives.

We of Xeraph do not make treaties with enemies. We either assimilate them, or destroy them.

I appreciate your offer. I would make a counter-offer: please allow us to establish an embassy in your nation. We will reciprocate. Being an ally of Imperial Xeraph is a far better way to enter the world stage than by backing a tenth-rate, newly formed Duchy.

Please let us know of your decision.

regards,

Sethanis, King of Black Shadows, Regent of Imperial Xeraph.

Irene looked over the telegram nervously and gulped.

I can't afford to make any enemies. I don't agree with the violence in which they used on Four Eagles, but I have no choice.

She sent a response letter:

Sethanis, King of Black Shadows, Regent of Imperial Xeraph,

I can see that you have this situation under control, and the annexation was completely lawful. You have every right to Four Eagles, and any resistance from them would be unlawful.

As for your embassy offer, I would be honored to have an embassy from your nation in the Republic, but our senate is still trying to decide where the embassy sector will be, so I must place your offer on hold. In the mean time, I personally invite you here to the capital of Cen du Alderon, as a personal guest of my own. We could tour the nation of have a conference, I would be happy with Either.

Captain Jenkins hesitated for a moment. "M'lord, you ARE aware who, or rather what, Khoratth is?"

Sethanis eyed Jenkins balefully. "Of course I know what Khoratth is. And yes I know that his kind are rarely seen outside of his country. But, he IS a Duke in his own right, a hero of the Essenian Wars, and is famed throughout the Empire. Why wouldn't he be adequate for the job?"

"M'lord, he is the Duke of the most vile, hideous, and blood-thirsty tribe of his people. He is a hero of the Essenian Wars because he and his Warriors killed more of the enemy with their bare hands than any other tribe. And I believe the word should be 'infamous' rather than famous. His atrocities were too much even for other Warriors of Vhammpyr. Had it not been for Prince Teii's intervention, he would have been executed."

"Come, come Captain. That was over a hundred years ago. People change."

Captain Jenkins sighed. "Very well, m'lord. Your'e the boss. Khoratth it is."

Sethanis chuckled. 'Yes', he thought, 'the vampire Warrior-Duke will be a perfect introduction to the new Xeraphian Empire. She'll not forget Khoratth and his men for a very long time....'

They have 12 hours to get to a point two miles west of the city in the vicinity of the farmhouse near the edge of the forest. The Four Eagles

King Viktor Alphonse Krassner was livid. He paced the length of his throneroom with a sword in his hand, slashing at anything he came across. His servants, terrified and scrambling for cover, had never seen him THIS angry. But....his son had been murdered by a Xeraphian soldier.

"Summon that pig Who calls himself the Governor of my nation! Now!"

In less than fifteen minutes, John Strickland, former High General of the Royal Xeraphian Forces, now ruler-by-decree of the dual ancient Kothite nations of Long Knives and Four Eagles, arrived with a dozen Vhammpyrian Warriors in tow. His visage grim, he said, "Your Majesty wished to see me?"

Krassner pointed a long, bony finger at Strickland. "That filthy swine DeMolay killed my son and did so in the most humiliating way......I want vengeance!"

Strickland looked at Krassner impassively. "Or what, your Majesty?"

Krassner stood, furious at the Prince's attitude. "Or else I will see to it myself that DeMolay is brought before me and executed for the murder of a scion of the Royal House of Krassner. DeMolay butchered my son and has left him hanging upside down from the walls of Turnae. I want justice!"

Prince John studied the King for a moment, then spoke with measured tone. "M'lord King, your kingdom was annexed by Imperial Xeraph. It included a missive that any and all nations which had relations with any other nation in this part of the region was also summarily assimilated into the Empire. Your son chose to rebel against his new liege, Amra of Xeraph along with the entire city of Turnae. Turnae still stands, but the people are all dead, save the women and children General DeMolay allowed to leave at the behest of the Tarlagian representative. Your son was tried and found guilty of treason against Imperial Xeraph and summarily executed. Any further action on your part will be construed as treason and/or rebellion and dealt with accordingly."

Strickland turned on his heel and made to leave the throneroom, Warriors following. He stopped, faced King Krassner once again, and said, "And just to let you know, YOU do not ever again summon ME. I am the ruler here now. You exist at my pleasure." He continued his way out of the throneroom, the large, ornate bronze doors closing behind him with a hollow sound.

Krassner sat down heavily. He signaled weakly at his Seneschal. "Djinn, call my nobles. Call the Chieftains of the Outer Lands. Call who...or what...is left of the soldiers of Long Knives. Call all who would be free of this insufferable Xeraphian presence. I have had enough."
The Four Eagles

All around the long table sat the nobles, generals, and Peer of the Realm of Four Eagles and Long Knives. The tribal Chieftains were slow to respond, but respond they did. They came in all of their rustic grandeur, fur capes and tapestried tunics festooned with various symbols of their past victories.

The tribes of this area were ancient, direct descendants of the peoples who lived here long before the Kothites arrived and enslaved all they could. Most of the tribes never succumbed to the Kothite regime, remaining a thorn in their side.

These tribal Chieftains were an anachronism, thriving peacefully in a land torn by rebellion and factions. Krassner brought all of the warring tribes together and forged a kingdom out of chaos. Now, Xeraph had come, bringing an unwanted, Imperial peace to the land.

The King stood and all conversation ceased. "My lords, loyal Generals, and most honored Chiefs. I thank you for coming today. We have dire circumstances to discuss." He moved away from his seat and continued. "As you know, this Amra of Xeraph has annexed our kingdom. Whether lawfully or not, the fact exists."

From a seat far to his left, he heard, "YOUR kingdom, Krassner. Not ours." Krassner looked sharply to his left to see a huge Chieftain, Chtilt by name standing. "We never recognized you or anyone else as our King. We simply stayed away from you...you stayed away from us. And now you want help against an Empire that can crush us without a thought?"

Krassner forced a smile. "M'lord Chtilt, I thank you for your words. Obviously we cannot endevour to fight Xeraph out in the open. But we can do so by stealth and subterfuge. I want nothing out of this but vengeance. Vengeance for the outrage perpetrated upon my family!"

Chtilt stood silent for a moment. "We of the tribes are adept at guerilla tactics. We will join whatever you decide to do, but I want to know what is in it for us? I don't give a rat's ass about your son."

The King felt the anger growing, but held his tongue. "Whatever you manage to take is yours, m'lord. What else would you want?"

Chtilt never hesitated. "Land, O King. We of the tribes grow in numbers each year and are beginning to feel a bit crowded. We need new lands so that we may continue to grow."

"There is plenty of land north of here. Use what you will," said Krassner.

Chtilt snorted. "I am not speaking of those desert wastelands, where serpent and drought reign. No, I am speaking of the mountain lands, where the rivers and lakes run clear and clean, where the game in plentiful, and the black soils lies thick upon the plateaus. I speak of those lands where you and your nobles have their pleasure homes."

Most of the nobles stood in protest, exclaiming their outrage. Signaling them to silence, the King spoke. "M'lord Chtilt, even though those lands belong to my Barons, Earls, and Counts, I can promise you that if you aid us in this rebellion against Xeraph that you will be richly rewarded with lands and treasures beyond your wildest dreams."

Chtilt looked around at the other Chieftains. There was no sound nor signal, but Chtilt said, "My brothers agree. War it will be with Xeraph."

The King turned and pulled down a map of Mercenary Lands, the region organized by Alaric of Xeraph hundreds of years earlier. "As all of you can see, this Empire is large, tens of millions living here. What we need to do is be selective in our attacks. Harass their outposts, attack and quickly retreat. And we must make the occasional terrorist outrage upon their sacred and holy institutions. Here is what I want to do as a 'first-strike', an attack that they will NEVER forget...."

THE DUKE'S CONFERENCE ROOM, ORLAND'S KEEP TARLAG

Grand Duke Ozgood sat listening to his morning briefing. As he listened to the brief on the Rotivan situation in Crete a call came in over the intercom.
"My Lord Duke, Paladins Hazen, Stormhand and Moonshadow request entrance."
Hearing this the Duke sat up in his chair and turned to the man on his left General Gayland Cox. "This can't be good a visit from the Three Bitches."
"A visit from one is bad, two is worse and three means someone really fucked up, my Duke." replied the General of the Armies.
"Admit them and after they come in seal the doors. If you hear screaming and bloodshed just ignore it."

A moment later the three women entered the room lead by the eldest of their number Lady Leenara Moonshadow a woman who appeared to be in here eighties but was much older. " My Lord Duke, General Cox a pleasure to see you both." The older woman said as she bowed her head to both in turn."

"Lets cut to the chase Ladies, for the three of you to pay me a visit some one has done something very bad so lets hear it so I can get back to work."

"It's Xeraph they have annexed Four Eagles and are preparing to wipe out everyone in one of their cities, for no reason. We can't let then do that. The bastards have to be stopped." Paladin Jessa Stormhand said as she stepped forward.

" I have the report right here Paladin Stormhand" replied General Cox "The City was in open revolt against Xeraph and they even fired on one of our units who were observing the action."

"All they had were a few unguided rockets and small arms hardly an open revolt and the response is way out of proportion. one of the Regents beat a man to death with a pipe for Gods sake. You can't support this Ozgood."

"My Duke, They are sparing their women and children and any of the in firmed."

"The only reason they spared anyone is that one of our people asked them to that is the only reason I demand you do something NOW!" Said Jessa Stormhand as she leaned on the conference table over the Duke.

"Everyone just relax, yes this looks bad and the Regents may have over reacted. But Xeraph are our closest allie and I won't endanger that over this incident. So just back off Paladin Stormhand" The Duke said as he stood up and tried to stare the woman down.

Leenara Moonshadow stepped forward and interposed herself between the two. "Please this will solve nothing, I am concerned about our friends their as well as their current government. The Regents have held power since Alric died and the emperor to be may not be able to rest power from them when the time comes."

"What do you propose that we do then?"

"I and one or two others will meet with Amra and see for myself what kind of man he is and express our governments concern over their most recent actions."

"Fine have Minister Sweetwater arrange it and see what is going on their. also dispatch Paladin Stromhand and a unit of Knights to Four Eagles to help direct the evacuation of the woman and children I want them on transports." and brought here."

Gorlois, DeMolay, and John Strickland sat around a small table under the wisteria-covered portico of a tavern in Turnae, recently the capitol of Long Knives. It was quiet...eerily so, as the population had either been killed or evacuated before the attack upon the rebel stronghold. The three sat silently, as if contemplating the consequences of this situation.

Strickland spoke first. "You know that there's gonna be a strong reaction from the 'do-gooders' around the globe. We just executed a Prince and slaughtered his rebellious followers."

"Hmf," snorted DeMolay, and we should care...why?"

Gorlois fixed him with a glare. "We should care because what YOU did was the equivalent of killing a flea with a hammer. Overkill, to say the least."

"I simply obeyed Amra's order. He told us, I believe, to 'contain the situation'. The situation is contained, no?"

"That it is...that it is," replied the Prince. "And now we are probably going to have a REAL rebellion on our hands."

"So what. As you may recall, 139 years ago, three nations rebelled against Alaric. It was over in two weeks. All the ringleaders strung up, beaten, and gutted. We should worry about some tribesmen and an old King?"

Gorlois cracked a smile. "You know, your'e right. We are Imperial Xeraph. They are nothing."

Strickland said very softly, "Yes, but even those who are nothing to us can wield a sword, or deliver a poison, or fire a shot from a mile away and kill any one of us. We are going to have to kill every one of them...an extermination. Xeraph has never in all of it's history carried out genocide. And it's leaving a bad taste in my mouth."

As if on cue, a high-powered slug whizzed by Duke Gorlois's head, so close that it tore off a piece of his ear. They all dived for the floor as another bullet slammed into the Duke's chest, sending him tumbling backwards, a gaping, bloody hole the size of a grapefruit spewing blood and entrails all over the other two.

DeMolay tapped his commpin. "OBP 3IIa, three to beam up, STAT!"

The Duke was dead. He lay on his back in the comm-center of the Orbiting Battle Platform 330 miles over the lower portions of Mercenary Lands, blood cooling and congealing on the metal floor. Before he died, he wrung a promise out of Strickland that he would be avenged.

DeMolay tapped his pin. "All unit commanders. The Prince, the Duke and I have been attacked by an unknown assailant. The Duke is dead. Prince John has directed me to temporarily take his place as military governor of Four Eagles and Long Knives. I want both cities surrounded: no one in or out. I want six teams out looking for the sniper who killed the Duke. The Mountain Commandos and a single team of DarkWings should find the bastard forthwith."

The Mountain Commandos were the Empire's crack team of stealth soldiers, adept in all of the arts of tracking, interrogating, and killing the enemy. The DarkWings were a vampire death squad. They were comprised of the tribe of Vampires who had wings. They would be valuable in that they could cover more ground more quickly than the Commandos.

The general continued. "I want them found! I want them brought here, alive if possible." He turned to the comm-officer. "Open a channel to Krassner." He waited a few seconds as the royal palace of Four Eagles was hailed. "Channel open, sir."

"King Krassner, this is General Jaques DeMolay of the Empire of Xeraph. I will say this once, and only once. If you know who perpetrated this assault on us, you will turn him over at once. You have 12 hours before we start killing your people. Wherever we find them, in whatever capacity they serve you, they will die. All of them if necessary. Response?"

There was about 20 seconds of silence, then a voice full of anguish and anger filled the small comm-room. "Go fuck yourself, DeMolay."

The General bowed his head. "So, that's the way he wants it. Very well, contact Amra and see what his thoughts are. Prince John and I await his decision."

Two thousand miles away, Amra of Xeraph sat musing over a message from Duke Ozgood of Tarlag. It seem that a few of his people wanted to chat about Xeraph's involvement in the annexation of Four Eagles and the executions accompanying it. Turning to Captain Tennille, he said, "Captain, please inform the Duke's government that I would be honored to have the ladies here. But let them know that it has tobe within the next five days."

"Aye, m'lord. Sending message."

The ancient DC-3 was flying low over the Xeraphian landscape preparing to land at the capitals main airport. The passengers sat in the old fashioned but very comfortable passenger compartment. Leenara sat in her customary well worn leather seat and spoke to her companions.

"Remember we are here to get a measure of Amra and get his feeling on the actions of his commanders not browbeat him." She said staring directly at the woman across from her, Jessa Stormhand.

Shooting back an angry look the younger Paladin spoke. "How are we going to find out unless we question him?"

"Your version of questioning some one is beating them senseless and asking what you want to know when they wake up. Hardly what we want to do the the future ruler of our closest allie Jessa." Replied the woman sitting next to her the striking Malvina Hazen.

Leenare sighed and sat back in her chair. "Enough both of you, you will give Jada here a bad impression of how Paladins of Ironhold act. I will do the talking and both of you will just observe. Jada dear, I will introduce you and see how he reacts. He was expecting us not the Duke's eldest daughter.
You are both about the same age and you above the rest of us could see what kind of young man he is. If you can get him alone for some privet conversation so much the better."

The forth member of the party a striking tall blond woman in her early twenties nodded her head and responded. "Father was quite taken with him and thought he would be a good friend to Tarlag. Even with what has happened in Four Eagles. I believe you all are making to much of this. One of the Regents just let thing get out of hand nothing more."

Leenara smiled at Jada "Child I hope you are right but some of us feel the Regents have gotten out of control and we want to see if that is the case. If it is then we will help this young man to take his rightful place and you will be the key."

With that statement the pilot announced "We are landing folks so strap in."

As the cold rain poured down his face, Amra glanced at the message given him by his comm-officer. "Shit. I forgot the Tarlag reps were coming." He was approximately 1855 miles from Ravennii organizing his military forces in the Four Eagles-Long Knives territory.

There had already been two sniper attacks on him and his retinue in the past six days. No one seriously hurt....just a flesh wound aquired by his secretary, Jhane. But THAT had really pissed him off.

He'd heard about the death of Duke Gorlois, but was sure that Strickland and DeMolay were handling that situation.

"Captain, what else have we overlooked?"

Capt. Hardings looked around. "Well, m'lord, it seems we've covered all the bases. I don't think a friggin' tick could get through these lines."

"Yeah...that's what Gorlois thought, too. At any rate, check 'em again, and then just to be sure, check 'em again. Got it? I'll be back in a day or so."

"Aye, sir. Uh, who's in charge?"

"Lord Sethanis is around here somewhere. Look to him if you need anything."

"Aye, sir."

In less than a minute, Amra was TransBeamed back to his palace in Ravennii, just in time to be advised that Lady MoonShadow and her entourage were circling for a landing.

Shrugging out of his wet clothes, he asked, "How many of 'em are there?"

"Four, m'lord. All of them of warrior status. And the one is the Duke's youngest daughter." His aide stood there with a stupid grin on his face, eyebrow cocked.

Amra noticed. "Get your mind out of the gutter, sergeant. This is an official visit, not a picnic."

"Hmm, yes, quite right sir." He still had a grin on his face. Amra was very much like his father in many ways, and his way with women was no exception. In all probability, he already had a number of potential heirs spread all over the Empire.

"Sergeant, I'll meet them in the smaller hall. This may be official, but it doesn't have to be formal. Have a light lunch prepared."

"Yessir. Anything else, Amra?"

"Yeah....wipe that grin off your face."

Jada looked out the small window of the DC-3 and noticed the Tarlagian vechiles that started to surround the plane.

"Leenara what is up with the APCs? I hope Father is not trying to be over protective."

"No child, I ordered them sniper attacks have broken out all over the place since the Prince was beaten to death. This body is a little old to stop bullets any more."
Just before the party exited the plane Malvina Hazen handed the young Duchess a package. "This is for your protection."

Jada unwrapped the small bundle, in it was a snub nosed 38 " You have got to be kidding, if I wanted to stop a mugger this would be fine." With that she opened her briefcase and removed a military style holster. Opening the flap on the holster she removed an FN-57 pistol and then loaded a magazine into
it. Checking the laser sight she put it back into the holster and then belted it around her waist. "Father always took me to the range."

The Women exited the Plane and got into an armored limo. in a few minutes a small convoy of the limo and three LAV-25s sped towards the palace.
A short time later the convoy entered the palace grounds. Exiting the limo the group entered the building.
With Lady Moonshadow in front the group entered. greeting a guard Leenara spoke "Please let Amra know we are here."

Captain Hardgrave looked over the refugee camp that his people had set up.
"Sargent Billings We need to get these people on the road in one hour. The navy has sent transports to get them out of here and I don't want them to miss the boats."

Amra looked down at the Tarlagians from a vantage point far above the entry to his palace. He knew from a historical standpoint that the women of Tarlag were every bit the warrior as were the men. Still, he'd had limited experience dealing with the female of the species when it came to diplomacy.

"M'lord, the Lady MoonShadow and her retinue are here", Jhane, his secretary announced.

"Yes, quite. Are they comfortable down in the hall?"

"Actually, m'lord, they seem quite anxious to get on with this meeting. MoonShadow and StormHand apparently don't like to be kept waiting."

He grinned. "Is that a fact? Well then, I guess we'll just have to scurry our asses right down there and relieve their impatience, eh?"

Jhane paused. "As an FYI, Amra, theyr'e armed to the teeth. Should I order extra security?"

"Not necessary, Jhane. The Brujah are never more than a heartbeat away, and the ShadowGuard are there. These are not our enemies, but rather one of a half-dozen of our oldest and most loyal friends and allies. Shall we?"

Jhane walked two steps behind him as they traversed the halls leading to the Hall of Greeting. Two ShadowGuard snapped to attention and pulled open the massive bronze doors as the Seneschal, Earl Robert DaVenci, made the announcement.

"M'lord Amra, the representatives of the Duke Ozgood of Tarlag are present." Turning to Lady MoonShadow, he said, "M'lady MoonShadow, may I present General Lord Amra Tan'it, High Commander of the Royal Xeraphian Legions, heir to the throne of Imperial Xeraph." Bowing low, the Earl backed away as the two warriors stood face-to-face. Amra smiled, gave a short nod of his head, and said, "Lady MoonShadow, I have heard much about you over the years. It is my pleasure to finally meet you," he swiftly turned to face Jada,"and your lovely attendants. Please, be seated."

Amra waited for the ladies to be seated, then stood at the head of the table. "M'ladies, I am told that you have some...misgivings...about our handling of the Four Eagles annexation and their rebellion. Would you mind elaborating about your concerns?"
Tarlag
10-03-2009, 15:58
"We have two major concerns. Our first is the over reaction to the limited revolt by one of their Princes. A few men with small arms and a few unguided rockets try and protect their city and one of your Regents response was to beat the Prince to death with a pipe then order the cities population exterminated. If it was not for the intervention of one of our officers that cities population would of been wiped off the face of the map." With that Leenara sat back and let the young Duchess continue.

"You must understand the political fall out from this. Members of Tarlags Commons are quite frankly disturbed at these actions. They feel that the Regents may be out of control and you may not be able to reign them in."
The young woman opened her briefcase and removed her laptop.

"We are also concerned that this action may turn an all most bloodless takeover into a full scale revolt. Our Tactical Forecasters have predicted that the current ruler of Four Eagles may now be fermenting attacks against your people. Unless the correct steps are taken then you may be looking at a long and bloody gorilla war for no gains on your part."
Xeraph
12-03-2009, 12:43
Amra paused for a second before answering. "My Lady, you need to know that we have the situation well under control at the present time. The rebels were handled in such a manner because the Empire has gained a reputation throughout the world as an entity that is a bit too gracious and merciful. When my father ruled, he let too many things go that should have been punished. The result was always another war somewhere down the road. I intend to act differently."

He stood and walked over to a map of the world, looking at it for almost a full minute. He turned abruptly and said, "Prince Krassner was killed because an example had to be set. His father agreed to our demands, papers were signed, and the annexation was carried out in a civil manner. The Prince chose to ignore our rights. He attacked my people, causing a fair amount of damage. Duke Gorlois ordered General DeMolay to assess the situation, which was done. The Prince admitted his wrong-doing, and was summarily punished. Gen. DeMolay acted upon my direct orders to publicly and expeditiously execute the Prince in as brutal fashion as possible. He did so. And now we have a wide-spread rebellion on our hands. Which was exactly what I needed to happen."

He pointed at the map. "M'lady, the world is growing more violent every day. There are brush-wars, rebellions, and acts of terror almost daily. I needed a violent act to let me know where the violent people are. A number of them have surfaced as a result of the Prince's execution. I know where they are, and I am going to see to it that within 72 hours they are no longer a threat to peace-loving countries."

He glanced at the map. "I'm willing to bet that you and the Duke are not even remotely aware that there are secessionist elements in Tarlag. But theyr'e there. And there are numerous other groups both within and without the Xeraphian Empire." He halted his speech for a moment, then continued.

"My father was a great man. He forged an Empire out of the howling wilderness that was the Kothite Kingdom. He fought them to a standstill, then all but destroyed them. The ones that got away are the focus of my efforts."

"As I said, Xeraph has been known to be tolerant of things that have always injured her. This will stop. I am not nearly as tolerant, merciful, or gracious as Alaric of Xeraph."

"I am aware that King Krassner is about to launch an offensive in several of my Imperial Nations. He will be stopped. I will personally execute him, his supporters, and his family, no matter how many they may be. This is in response to the lawlessness that has gained an upper hand in the world."

Again he paused. "You need not fear my uncles, the Regents. They did as they were bade by my father as he lay dying. And now the reins of government have been handed to me. I will be coronated Emperor in a week or two. Then, the REAL work of cleaning up this planet will commence. Questions?"

Jessa Stromhand's mouth opened preparing to verbally lay out the Xeraphian ruler but was stopped by a wave of Lady Moonshadows hand.
With an all knowing smile The elder Paladin spoke. "Amra that is a bold claim taking out all your enemies within 72 hours. One thing I have learned over the years that no plan no matter how good will survive the heat of battle. Someone may come along to upset your plan and the cost of this may be more then you bargained for."

The Elder Paladin leaned towards the young ruler and continued. "Let me tell you of someone with a similar plan to yours, our last Grand Duke, Ozgoods older brother Arnold the Younger. He was a great warrior just like his Father. Arnold decided that he would draw his enemies out and finish them once and for all. In this case it was the near by nation of Teramon. Everything had gone according to plan right down to the land invasion of their territory.
Their military was in full retreat and their capital had surrendered with out a fight. As our Grand Duke was surveying his conquest was shot down by a lowly Teramon army cook with a combat shotgun. The man did it because he saw his unit butchered by our forces.
The lesson is simple an act of butchery caused a person who was no threat to become one. this is what may happen here."
Jada interrupted "If I may, the blood has all ready been split. I believe the correct action now is how best to defeat the ones who rally to the defense of this slain Prince. Lady Moonshadow, Lord Amra the question I will pose to you both is how best can we help to defeat Xeraphs and Tarlags enemies with out creating more?"

Amra allowed himself a smile. "Not ALL of my enemies, m'lady. Just those who are presently annoying me. The armies of these rebels and their tribal chieftains will be utterly destroyed. Yes, I will suffer some losses. That is the way of war. But you have to agree that these buffoons do not stand a chance. And not to worry....I will not be out there myself directing this campaign. I have dozens of perfectly capable commanders who can begin and end this little war without much effort. Krassner and his allies haven't a clue as to what is going to befall them."

Amra walked over to the open window. "M'ladies, if you look out across this city and beyond, out to the woodlands and deserts of this Kingdom, you'll see that there are limitless possibilities for a nation such as Xeraph to expand and control a good deal more than it already does. Our region of Mercenary Lands which contains all of the nations of our Empire is about 837,000 square miles in size. We have an abundance of every conceivable trade-good, a perfect climate, and, at least right now, relative peace. Xeraph is allied to a number of large, powerful nations, yourself among them. We are the Protectors of several nations, not the least of which is the region of Avignon, over 700,000 square miles of the most fertile land on the planet. We have holdings in the Constellation Tau Ceti: two Expanses, dozens of solar systems, thousands of planets. Sixteen of which have been claimed and settled. Our Planetary Fleets, both military and mercantile, are presently roaming the universe and making discoveries that do nothing but enhance our standing in the world."

He stood for a minute, silently taking stock of Xeraph's greatness. "M'Lady MoonShadow, as to how we are going to protect ourselves from enemies within and without, I have a proposal that I'd like you to take back to Duke Ozgood." Amra strode over to his maps, shuffled through a few, then pulled one out.

"I have here a map of our lands, and their proximity to Tarlag, Mandalore Prime, and one or two others. What I am going to propose is some sort of Alliance between our nations. An EXCLUSIVE Alliance. One made up of only the most loyal and stalwart friends and allies of us all. Yes, yes, I know that we are already allies, but this is going to go one step further. This proposed alliance is going to exist for one major purpose: to export our way of life to all those who want it. I am proposing we build a Systemic Planetary Imperium, all linked together by the common bond of peace and friendship. What do you think?"

Lady Moonshadow sat back in her chair a thought for a moment then she turned to the young Duchess and posed a question. "My Dear, What do you believe our governments reaction to this will be?"

"Father will surly approve of it. He has always sought closer relations with the Empire. Prime-Minister Santo will take some convincing but he should come around to the idea if Tarlag is given some incentives, say access to higher technologies. The House of Commons on the other hand are going to take some major convincing. they have been doing everything in their power to keep us off the world stage. The members also seem to have a built in mistrust of the current Xeraphian ruler ship. They have even gone so far as to draft a recommendation to the Duke that we break off our relationship with your Government Amra."

The Elder Paladin gave the young woman a slight smile and spoke. "Not as precise an analysis as your Brother would have given but you are showing improvement in your political skills child."

Pausing for a moment to gather her thoughts she turned towards Amra. "Unfortunate your take over of Four Eagles has given your government a black eye in the view of the Tarlagian people. The House of Commons sees this and are acting on it. We need to soften the image of you Lord Amra and your government. If the people see what kind of man you are then I believe that their opinion of you will change and pressure can be put on the Commons to change their minds so they will be receptive to your proposal.
If you were to come to Tarlag on the arm of a certain young Duchess and give your proposal to the people then I am sure that after the details are worked out then your Idea will be accepted by our people."

Amra didn't quite know what to say for a second or two. The blatant inference to his being an escort to Duchess Jada raised the hair on the back of his neck. The potential outcomes were mostly unacceptable to him.

On the other hand, he wanted Tarlag in his camp on this proposed Mega-Alliance. What would it hurt if he played chaperone to this....little girl?

"M'lady Jada's analysis, however elemental, is a refreshing departure from the political claptrap I all too often have to put up with. Direct and to the point." He gave a short nod to the ever-so-slightly-blushing Duchess and then turned to Moonshadow.

"M'lady MoonShadow, I'd be delighted to attend to some sort of state function in Tarlag and address both your government and your people. You should bear in mind, however, that I am not as yet officially Emperor of the Xeraphian Empire. That isn't going to happen until this little sortie against Krassner and his rebels is concluded." He looked down for a second, then came up with a bit more of a stern look on his face.

"As regards this situation with Four Eagles, I can sympathize with the "doo-gooder" element in any government. The annexation has taken an unanticipated twist, and I must deal with it. But....make no mistake. I WILL deal with this upstart rebel as I see fit, international opinion notwithstanding. Xeraph, both as a member-Kingdom of the Empire, and as the Empire itself, does not bow to pressure from anyone. I believe in a sovereign nation's right to legally pursue expansion, and to defend itself when arms are taken up against it. Surely, your Congress must understand this."

He paused, a smile back on his face. "But, now, please let's drop this unpleasant topic and have some lunch." He offered his arm to the Lady Jada, who, blushing furiously, took it and allowed herself to be led to the head of a long table, taking a seat next to the soon-to-be-Emperor of Xeraph.....

She is currently attached to the 7TH Aircav Regiment as a Air Group Commander."

"Nothing so important Lady Moonshadow I direct a squadron of Super Cobras that provide air support to the transport choppers in the Regiment. I am nothing but a glorified air traffic controller."

"Stop being so modest child I have seen your commanders reports concerning your ideas on how the Aircav can be used to put down insurgents like the Empire is facing now. I sure I can arrange it that your unit can be sent to one of the hot spots in the Empire to put your ideas to use. Captain Hardgrave looked over the motley collection of buses, trucks and cars
that were making up the evacuation convoy from the Long Knives Capital.
"Damn Grover, we have to get this lot to the coast with this lot of junk."

Captain Grover Mills looked over the assembled group of transports. "Just remember you were the one who opened his big mouth, the Commander was pissed you got involved in the first place."

"Yea, so pissed he would not give us any trucks to help. I am suprised he sent you and your boys to help."

"You did not hear? Some one back home heard of what you did and ordered some support for this operation. Col. Hara is still pissed about the whole thing but orders is orders."

"Looks like the first group is ready to go get them to the coast and get back here with the buses so the next group can move out."

With that statement Captain Mills saluted and turned towards his waiting CV-90 APC.

Amra listened to MoonShadow's description of Jada's abilities and thought, 'Fuckin' great. She's beautiful, built like a brick shithouse, and can fire the big guns.'

That's what he THOUGHT. What he SAID was, "Well, m'lady Jada is an accomplished warrior. Will wonders never cease. Such delicate beauty belies the fierceness of her nature."

A commotion near the door caused him to break away from the lovlieness of the Duchess. "M'lord....trouble down south. The Tarlag forces escorting the Turnae refugees to safety has been attacked. A battle is raging and our allies are holding their own, but it is touch and go."

Amra spun around. "M'lady Jada, would you care to accompany me to our southern territories and show me what you can do against rebels?"

Duchess Jada looked over at the three Paladins almost with a look of asking permission. With a quick nod from Lady Moonshadow the Blond Duchess spoke. " Lead the way however this dress is not what I usually where in the field."

Lady Moonshadow smiled and quickly spoke into her com unit so softly no one else could hear. "This is why I am a Paladin and you are but a Duchess child. A change of outfits and something a little better then these side arms will be coming in in just a moment. With your permission Amra the ladies and I would like to chaperone your first date. Lady Ellen her Mother would never forgive me if she did not return with her virtue in tact."

With her own smile Jada turned to Amra. "I hate to disappoint my Mom but there is not much virtue left to loose."

Amra was now all business. "With all due respect, M'lady MoonShadow, I'd hardly call this a 'date'. Your forces are being attacked by vicious tribesmen who'd just as soon kill their own people to get at your troops. Let's leave the niceties here and get to the battle, eh?"

Turning to Jada, he said, "As far as your outfit, m'lady, by the time we arrive on the outskirts of Turnae, you'll be adequately provisioned." Amra tapped his commpin and said, "Major Pavros, two to beam to those coordinates we spoke about earlier."

As Amra and Jada faded from view in the smoky, fiery blue oval that was the TransBeam, the Paladins rose quickly and prepared for their own trip to the scene of the fight.........
