Map-making programs

I currently have plans to make a good looking maps of various regions of my country,but PAINT is't very good program to make a good,realistic and geographicly good looking map.I tried with Corel too,but still the results aren't very good.So does anyone know is there any Map-making program on the internet.I also tried to search on the net but still didn't find anything satisfying.Anyone with any experience and advice ill be very gratull.

well for cities I use RPG Citymap Generator (http://www.download3000.com/download_20638.html)(linky but not originally where i got it so)

IIRC the GIMP has reasonable fractal map generator.

Other than that msot of the maps I've seen have been "hand drawn" using the lieks of paint, the gimp or photoshop


There is terragen, i'm not sure how good it would be for making actual maps
