High Command, Cerberus

Operation: Cauldron, was coming along quite well. In the past few weeks the Prussian General Staff and High Command had become engulfed in the planning for the invasion of Anagonia. The political plan was to force a change of government in the country, one which would be favorable to withdrawing from Stoklomolvi. Then the fascists in Gholgoth could destroy the Communist regime without their strongest ally helping them. For the Prussian military, it would be their first major conflict since the overthrow of Molkte and the reforms that went into it. Once again, the Prussian military minds were asking Lyras for help, some in the Officer Corps were expressing disgust as what they saw as an increasing dependence on their Lyran allies. But the Generals in charge were keen to use the Lyrans to their fullest advantage, especially with the numbers they could bring to bear.

Operation: Cauldron's first step would be to assault and secure the West Islands, a significant military base for the Anagonians. Naturally, the enemy navy would more than likely try and engage the Prussian navy before the assaults could begin, thus much of the early planning was given priority to the navy. The Prussian navy was much larger than the Anagonians, and it would be even easier with much of the enemy navy away in other theaters. For this task, the Fourth Armada had been formed, consisting of roughly three fleets and totaling around three thousand vessels. It represented more than a third of the Navy's total power projection forces, yet this could be spared comfortably. The fleet was consist of well over two hundred carriers, numerous strike vessels, submarines, amphibious landing forces, and logistical vessels. The bulk of the land combat troops would not travel in Fourth Armada, but instead be transported to the front after the island had been secured. For that task, subnamed Plan Blue, the Marines would have the primary responsibility of securing the beachhead. II Corps of the Marines had been assigned to that task, also there was the Army's XXXV Corps, which would land and reinforce the beachhead. When all were landed, around 90,000 troops would be ashore, with the rest of the ground forces just two days away. Proper fire support given by the Navy would ensure that no concentrated enemy assault by land or air could be a success, and the beachhead would remain intact.

Most of the nation's active duty land force had been tagged for the invasion. With a large reserve force and a secure position in Greater Dienstad, The entire ground force was being organized under the Anagonia Theatre, which would consist of at least three Army Groups, and several independent Corps and divisions to be used where needed. This would be the primary invading force and would fall under the command of Field Marshall Adler. A second Anagonia Theater would be commanded by Field Marshal Ackerman, and would be deployed after the landings on the mainland. In total, there would be over nine million combat troops, and many many more logistics troops on the actual front. The Air Force had tagged five complete Air Forces, around five thousand planes, for the offensive. More could be brought, if needed. The divisions going on the invasion would be of the utmost quality, well-equipped, trained, supplied and of the highest morale. Once combined with the Lyran forces, the Prussians would not only have the qualitative edge, but also, hopefully the quantitative edge, as well.

The plans detailed in Operation:Cauldron after the initial assault on the islands were rather loose and open to changes given the situation. However, the plan did call for the beginning of a general air offensive on the coast, with the goal of destroying military bases, coastal defense position, and industry. While many in the Air Force were calling on a broader offensive to target the industry, the plan for now was only the coastal air offensive. Once adequate supplies had been brought to the islands, the actual invasion could begin.

On Monday, the Fourth Armada, under Fleet Admiral Furst, set out towards Anagonia, prepared and ready for war. The large convoy of troop transports and escorts would set out two days later. The deceleration of war was issued, and the men under Furst began mentally preparing themselves for the tasks ahead.

Military Headquarters - City of Imperius, Anagonia

Caster Oblivion surveyed the news from all fronts. Everything looked well for the Chazakain Invasion, and the Fictions Theatre would be moving along smoothly soon enough. He was about to conclude another Theatre to invade when a Secretary burst into his war room, Caster standing in disbelief as the Secretary explained a report that he handed to the Acting Chief Governor. Waving the Secretary off, Caster slumped into his chair. He thought for a few minutes, head down as his fingers stroked his chin. He closed his eyes, wondering what the now-deceased Johnny Standford would do.

A train of thought came across his mind. All the events of Anagonia's history he'd experienced, how the Chief Governor's reacted, how always Anagonia succeeded at keeping the enemy at bay without coming to the Motherland. Yet in all nations history, there is a point when they are indeed invaded and they must prove their worth. He sighed openly, his mind trailing to the fact that this war had cost the moral of the People. Maybe the death of the Chief Governor was a sign that the United Republic was indeed ending it's global time of supremacy? Perhaps now was the time to surrender, to avoid the coming of the storm. Maybe he should surrender.

His eyes shot open. No, he would never do that. To surrender would be the ultimate disgrace to the memory of Johnny Standford. It would be the ultimate insult to everything the United Republic stood for. Her military would somehow defend her borders. Somehow, Anagonia would survive. He briefly made orders for two invasion fleets to return home, noting they'd arrive when the potential invasion fleet from the enemy would arrive. He would deal with the logistics later. He looked in the desk, grabbing the box of cigar's that the Chief General normally used when he was in this office. He found a box of matches, lighting it, deeply inhaling. Exhaling, he had an idea.

The West Islands was the powerhouse of the Military Establishment. Heavily defended on shore and sea, it was the hardest point for any invasion to get to. Numerous platforms of defense including Anti-Air and Anti-Ship Batteries littered the coast. Battleship Cannons and various concrete bunkers provided defense against landing forces. The mountains hid a vast array of radar stations, and the most important Spaceport for military shuttle launches. Currently around the island, near the various sea bases and sub pens, a fleet was stationed and currently active. He could potentially gain time for the fleets incoming by sending a preemptive strike towards the enemy invasion fleets.

Inhaling the cigar again, holding his breath for a moment as he thought, Caster concluded that the best course of action was twofold. First, send out a fleet to meet the enemy and cause as much damage as possible. Second, bolster the homeland defense and prepare for all out invasion. He would make it hell for the enemy to get into Anagonia in one piece. Exhaling, he tapped the ashes into the ashtray on the desk. Pressing a button, a flat screen rose from the desk and a keyboard emerged. There, he issued his orders, finalizing the defense of the United Republic of Anagonia.

Military Headquarters - City of Imperius, Anagonia

Caster nodded, "I understand. But A deal is a deal, I intend to go through with it fully."

A few minutes passed, Caster thanking the person on the other end, hanging up the receiver. He sat back in the chair, sighing heavily, inhaling more of the cigar he lit previously. Diplomacy was hard work, especially when you had to convince your Brethren it was worth the risk. The situation had started when Caster discovered he had another fleet to use, but the fleet hadn't been used before in any major war of Anagonian Origin. He exhaled slowly, blowing smoke across the flat-screen's light as it cast its glow across his features. With this bolstering of units, which would creep alongside the fleet returning from the Pact of Iron Campaign, Anagonia just might make it through this invasion.

The red phone rang, Caster picking it up. He nodded, then was transferred to another call. He smiled, "Alpha Beta? Sure, we can go by that." He took another smoke of his cigar, exhaling as he looked at the flat-screen from his desk. "Yes, I'm sure we can come to that agreement." Caster chuckled, "Of course! Mr. Beta, I and my People always stand beside our Pledges." Nodding again, he laughed. "Oh I know how it is being a secretive person, Mr. Beta. I assure you I will keep my word." Smiling widely, Caster nodded. "No, Thank You Mr. Beta. From all of us."

He replied one more time, then hang up the phone. Caster felt like jumping around the room and dancing for joy. Being Chief of Foreign Affairs and Activities had helped his diplomatic capabilities to the largest degree. He placed both hands behind his head, smoking his cigar, and grinned a toothy grin as he closed his eyes. Probably the last time he'd get to relax. Probably.

"Perfect" replied Alpha Beta. The man behind the figurehead known only as Fighter4u Supreme Hand of Fighter4u,before he hung up his own red phone. Today a huge victory has secured in the way his remembered these conflicts being resolved. Through words and diplomats, not battleships in god awful far away places.

With that note Alpha Beta turned to his computer console and full screen monitors and simply said "Plan Swordfish is a go".

This simple sentence would triggered a massive fleet deployment, but different from any other deployment before. For this fleet would falsely fly under the Anagonia flag in defense of its country. After all, a deal was a deal.

The fleet silently without as much fanfare as could be done simply slipped out of it ports in the dead of the night and for all the navy was concerned. It disappear from the world,only to eventually reappear as part of the Anagonia Oscar Vladinchi's Invasion Fleet returning to the homeland.

Somewhere in the Ocean
The Armada had been at sea now for just over four days. Everything was well with the sailors and Marines, they went about their duties with professionalism and with high morale. All of the men were anxious, however for the upcoming battle. For the Marines, it would be some time yet. But, for the sailors, their trial by fire would come much sooner then expected.

Naval Intelligence had through orbital imagery found the enemy fleet was moving out from Anagonia proper, to feet the fleet somewhere in the ocean. This was puzzling to Furst and his commanders, under such circumstances they would have fought near the West Islands, with support from the shore bases missiles and land-based aviation. But, as the maxim goes, it is best not to interrupt the enemy as they were making a mistake and it was a maxim Furst would exploit to its fullest extent.

Naturally, the fleet had a radar picket that extended more than six hundred kilometers from Furst's flagship that extended in a complete circle. The picket, and the ASW picket after that, would see that any enemy would be picked up long before they reached the fleet proper. Intelligence had been roughly tracking the enemies movements via radio reports and imagery, but a fixed location was impossible to get. During one of these routine patrols, however, the radar picket did end up spotting the enemy fleet, and it was still a good six hundred kilometers away.

Furst now was with his senior commanders aboard his flagship, decided the course of action to be taken. Furst had already ordered the ships to pick up speed so they could get within five hundred kilometers. It was unknown if the enemy had picked up Fourth Armada or not, so it there was still the option of attempting to bypass the enemy fleet. But Fuchs wanted the enemy fleet decimated here, in the unforgiving depths of the ocean, rather then at home protected by shore defenses and aircraft. It was a sound call.

The first attack on the enemy defenses would consist of two waves of aircraft launched from the carrier decks. Over five hundred aircraft would participate in the attack, of which the main objective would be destroying the enemy's radar pickets and air defense ships. Over two hundred and fifty ASF-40 Spectres would protect the other aircraft against any enemy fighters, the main strike against the opposing forces would be one hundred fifty NS-10's Storks and NS-20's Albatross and EW-50 Hawk aircraft. The primary missiles to be used would be the MLSS-21, of which two hundred would be launched. The missile was sea-skimming and stealthy which, especially at the range launched, would make it harder to detect. It was also CIWS resistant, and easily capable of crippling a cruiser. These would be used in a surprise attack against the pickets and enemy AA ships. Following this, a barrage of one hundred fifty AS-62 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13163753&postcount=8)missiles would be launched on the surviving enemy ships, and then, once at a range of 250km, the last of the AS-58 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13163739&postcount=7) missiles would be launched, two hundred of them, once again at the enemy AA ships.

After judging the response from the enemy fleet, a second wave would be launched. Its goal would be either finishing off the enemy AA, or attacking the enemies capital ships, depending on the success of the first wave.

OOC: Did you already attack or was that just a summary of what your going to do?

West Island Command - Island Command Headquarters

Against the protests of his advisers and military commanders, Caster Oblivion flew over to West Island to gain the support from the advanced technology employed at the Command Headquarters there. His arrival was briefly noted, most of the soldiers still in mourning over their lost Commander in Chief from the terrorist attack. Caster respected their loyalty to their past Chief Governor's Memory, allowing them this emotional outlet while they still could. Eventually he'd pull them together with help from his Commanders, whom all understood the need for loyalty to their new leader.

The Military Headquarters was stationed in the tall mountain ranges of West Island, hidden deep in passages that could be well defended on the ground and nearly impossible to attack from the air. Sea bombardments would be useless here, as any missile launched would slam into the many twists and turns of the mountain passages. Defense fortifications littered the landscape, well defended by mountain outcroppings yet easily capable of returning offensive and defensive fire thanks to the natural cover. Bunkers and hidden underground passages allowed soldiers unparalleled capability to travel from one side of the island to the other. Some of the tunnels were wide enough to allow tanks and vehicles to traverse the many passages, allowing sudden reinforcements to arrive at any point during a campaign.

The launch points for aircraft were hidden in hangers in the Mountains where sliding NBC-Protected Door's made of hard Titanium would allow aircraft the capability to launch without being noticed. Most of the Hangers were well hidden thanks to the natural cover, but a few would be exposed. Those few were not linked to the underground passages for safety reasons, and therefore were one time use hangers since they could be spotted easily. The full compliment of aircraft and vehicles on the island numbered in the thousands, easily maintained thanks to a direct underground tunnel leading to the mainland that allowed supplies to be transported for ease of travel. Surface supply ships had easy access to, with hidden Naval Bases within the island that served as both Sub Pen's, which were located deep in the mountain via natural passages, and artificially constructed bases that took years of planning to get right.

Caster stood in the main HQ of the island. The complex was large and spacious, most of it within one of the tallest mountains and well hidden. The complex spanned deep underground, allowing for many man-made and natural reinforced spaces to be used for various possibilities. The Main HQ was about two-hundred feet underground and looked much like a NASA Command Center with the many technologically advanced wide screens spanning the front of the HQ room. Around him were plenty of stations were officers of every military branch sat and took information about the current state of world affairs. Currently it was being used to Command and Control the Global War, Caster merely a speck in the activity bustling around him.

He looked behind him to see an raised platform with extended consoles and screens used by General's and Admiral's for proper Command and Control. Walking towards there various Officers gave him salutes, which he returned respectfully. Entering the room, he noticed the wording above the entrance stating "Command and Control Headquarters". He walked in, realizing this room was where everything went down. Many Generals and Admirals walked about a large upraised table that served as the central Command Table for Military C&C. It was a touch-activity flat display that could give the user limited holographic imagery should the situation call for it. As Caster took note, on the table currently was a satellite display of the TPF fleet heading towards the West Island in a Computer and Human Projected Course.

One of the General's took note of Caster and suddenly went to attention, everyone in the room followed. Caster quickly returned the salutes, calling "as you were" and watching as everything returned to the normal level of activity almost as if nothing had happened. The General who called attention came over to Caster, pointing at the display. "Chief Commander, we have a plan for striking a blow to the enemy."

"I can see that," Caster said pointing at the display, "But I believe sending surface ships en mass would only dwindle our defensive capability."

The General had a puzzled look, "What do you suggest, sir?"

Caster starting working the display, taking some numbers from the submarine forces and a few surface assets. When he was done, the General went wide eyed, gazing at Caster, then at the display. He then went to pondering, "I believe it could work."

By now a few more Commanding Officers had joined in, all of them agreeing. It was something they hadn't thought of before. They looked at Caster with a new found respect. Caster merely chuckling and opening his arms in a shrugging expression, "What can I say? I've lived beside Chief Governor's all my career. I had to pick up some things."

Somewhere in the Ocean

On the surface, the fleet approaching the TPF forces looked something like a joke. Two BB-61 Iowa Class's defended a lone Eagle-Class Aviation Cruiser (http://hawk.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=Military&action=display&thread=28&page=1#341). Beside and behind were two HOUSTON-class Nuclear Powered Guided Missile Cruiser's and four CROWN-class Guided Missile Frigate's. To the enemy, undoubtedly it seemed as if the defenses of the Anagonia Motherland were too thin to even protect its waters. But the surface fleet was merely the distraction for the hidden hunting packs below the surface.

The United Republic had recently started building the Virginia Class Submarines. It was too slim a number to note, and therefore still in the secrecy of the moment. Only Two Virginia Classes were sent, both miles a part and separated from the fleet to avoid detection as they continued on silent running with thermal layer in mind towards the TPF fleet. Accompanying them was Anagonia's Hunter/Killer Submarine of choice, six Seawolf-Class Attack Submarines. They would be lead by ten Akula Submarines. Each submarine spread far a part, and ready to take the lead.

The surface ships responded to the launch of aircraft and missiles by launching Thirty-Two Missiles as a counter attack, comprised of ten Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles and twenty-two Harthingy Anti-Ship Missiles. The Battleships got off eight Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles before the enemy fleets missiles reached them. Afterward, all hell broke loose. The Eagle-class Aviation Cruiser exploded, half of the ship disappearing in a fireball as a load of missiles impacted at once. Then Missile after missile pounded the fleet. No matter how hard the defenses tried, nothing prevailed. Ship after ship exploded, split in half, or just disappeared due to the huge amounts of weaponry impacting. Eventually even the Battleships took more damage than they could take, sinking in the dark abyss of the ocean.

The submarines, however, continued unhindered. They preferred to sneak behind the enemy fleet and wait it out until the fleet arrived near West Islands. They would go around the fleet far enough a part to not cause a giant signature, and avoiding potential avenues of detection to achieve the element of surprise, continuing on Silent Running at best speed.

OOC With your approval Anagonia.

IC

It was viewed with some derision amongst the Waldenburger elite, the view that the Empire, at its current state of precarious imbalance in both domestic and foreign affairs, should deploy a force to intercede within the quickly escalating ideological wars of the continent. Impassioned speeches within the Council of Bishops pushed for an outright strike and if possible extermination of those responsible for old war wounds. With as much tact as could be summoned however the Emperor tacitly informed the Church that genocide was off the table, for at least the moment. Although in the ever present and necessitated compromise that was required to keep the balance the War Ministry was tasked to look into the affair.

There was no means a lack of action to be had and indeed the few battle and exchanges that had so far taken place were the subject of several news programs and at one point a minor riot. Mostly though, especially by senior officers and the nobility, it was looked upon as an affair for foreigners. If they wished to kill one another than why shed one drop of Waldenburger blood for their musings?

To: The Honorable Cheif Governor of Anagonia
From: His Most Gracious Imperial Majesty Wyatt von Waldenburg IV

It has come to our attention that the Anagonian Republic has recently engaged and come under attack. Though we could not say the sources behind this invasion are entirely within the realms of our concern the stability and defense of the Grand Republic is something, which, especially since our treaty of friendship, we take most seriously.

In the past our nations have fought for reasons entirely now separated by time and dare I say a good feeling between our two great states? At any rate it would do us a great honor if our soldiers, our men, of their own free will do for the Anagonians what they did not do for themselves so long ago. We would esteem it a great pleasure if an army could be landed for the defense of the Grand Republic and in the course of this die for the security and prosperity of both Anagonia and the Mother Country, and the friendship between us.

We intend to make right the wrongs perpetrated between our nations and finally, after so many years, redeem ourselves as a people. And perhaps in due time one favor shall follow another, but I digress. Specifics on our landings and numbers are included in the following documents and hopefully, with God and yourself willing, we shall arrive within a few days.

Signed:
His Most Gracious Imperial Majesty Wyatt von Waldenburg IV

“Operation Oberon Your Highness.” A folder thick with ‘top secret’ markings and made lumpy by the hundreds of sheets of paper stuffed into it. “A relieving of the” Vice Admiral Thousis paused as he searched for a word, “situation. Within a matter of 169 hours we can fly in approximately 180,000 men and their respective supplies. Normally they would be shipped of course however with the Ghogoloth situation as it is we have decided against traversing by ocean for the majority of the force.” A semi circle of officers stood or leaned against one of the massive cherry tables set about the War Ministries drawing rooms.

The windows were flung wide open and the sounds of drill were blown in with a light spring wind. Papers rustled and the Vice Admiral slapped his hands down to steady them, “We will only be issuing the force, O Force as it will be called, with three days supplies before each successive wave of transports departs as well as the more delicate munitions. We will be relying on the Anagonians for small caliber ammunition and foodstuffs as well as clothes etcetera. According to our treaty of friendship signed some weeks before these events occurred these could be ours anyway however we will be wiring ahead several million Reichmarks and should the government not feel inclined to provide for us then we will privately assure our situation. Once arrived, we will be subjugated to the Anagonia governments oversight and command.” The Vice Admiral bowed slightly to Prince Peter von Waldenburg, a rather tanned and elderly gentlemen sitting with one leg looped over the armrest of a vast and overstuffed armchair.

“It is my understand your Highness has had some dealings with the Anagonians before, and will be accompanying us in an advisory role.”

The prince nodded lazily without taking his eyes from the swaying leaves of the oak tree outside the War Ministry, “I shot a few of them.” There was a polite wave of laughter, which the Prince did not join in.

Vice Admiral Thousis nodded slightly, and feeling obliged to do so explained, “His Highness was one of the few survivors of Thule and fought in both battles.”

“Indeed. As did my son.” There was not a great need to say more they were old wounds, which ran deep, and many were trying to forget the actions of those few days. “I will however leave my rifle at home, and repel to the best of my abilities the attacks upon the rightful Anagonian government.” The phrase was almost as hollow as Peter’s voice.

“Quite,” General von Gröning, in perhaps one of the most famously refined accents of all time pushed a strand of cropped white hair from his eyes and pointed down to a folder. “And this clause here though states….”

“Leave it general…” Thousis admonished cheerily. “There is to be no declaration of war and as little hint as possible that we are in fact in Anagonia. There is no need for another war so we act quietly and follow orders then we go home. The Minster and Emperor have been most definite about this, and though there will undoubtedly be a certain level of violence, it is to be done as quietly and efficiently as possible. There will be no time for personal vendettas,” an eye was casual darted towards the Prince to see if this had merited a response, which apparently it did not, “or private advancement of any kind. Prisoners will be taken and full quarter given to the wounded; the Church is not running this campaign.” Thousis smiled at this; his cousin, the Cenobiarch had had a most keen interest in this war and proposed a great many ideas. Of course the last war that the Cenobiarch had any sort of oversight in ended with Thousis becoming a wanted war criminal and a hunted man. It was perhaps a relief.

“Gentlemen, Your Highness, the Emperor!” All present in the room shot with more or less grace to their feet and crashed to crisp salutes before the portrait of the slightly dowdy Emperor which hung over an empty fireplace. “The Emperor and Victory!” The moment was held for some time before Thousis felt it safe to check his watch, “the first wave of transports leave in approximately half an hour. And I depart for my fleet in six. I hope to see you all well,” the Vice Admiral began to gather his briefing materials from the desk and slip his cap on, “In Anagonian. How things have changed Your Highness, eh?”

“Not half so much as you think

OOC: Thanks! Will you be rping them or will I?

Headquarters was in a state of confusion. Two enemies were assisting the United Republic in its time of need, now a third whom became a close friend to Anagonia was sending aid. All this action, all this time, all this show of friendship nearly collapsed the hearts of many. Others knew the horrible truth that allowed the first two to enter, but the third shocked and awed their cold emotions. Word was quickly sent to the Acting Chief Governor, whom among the Populace was gaining support to become the Reigning Chief Commander to replace Johnny Standford. Things were indeed looking hopeful, and the Commander's in Imperius hoped the word sent to Caster would ease his pained mind.

Flag of War - United Republic of Anagonia

To: His Most Gracious Imperial Majesty Wyatt von Waldenburg IV
From: Caster Oblivion - Acting Chief Governor of the United Republic of Anagonia

In this dark time it is wonderful to see past enemies, now brought together in friendship, form an understanding to assist one another.

The moment your letter arrived to me in West Island Headquarters, I nearly dropped to my knees in honor of your gracious comments. I am humbled, and shall forever remember this day on behalf of my People. I must clearly state that I am not the Chief Governor that represents the People of Anagonia. That right was given to Johnny Standford, whom perished in a Fictionese Terrorist Attack on our capital. I am merely his automatic successor, chosen to lead this Country in its darkest hour. As that chosen Leader, not by the People but by succession, I give my thanks.

I will tell you that undoubtedly when the news hits of this letter to me, the People shall remember Waldenburg forever. To die for someone who you barely know is the noblest deed of all, and for that I extend an offer to return this act with my own Blood. I assure you that the Military shall act accordingly, even the People, to defend your lands. I can call you now Comrade Brethren, the closest thing to an Anagonian's heart besides his blood family. Your People are our People, for you have shown wonderful courage and friendship in our time of need.

Your military is most welcomed, and we will await your arrival to assist our Motherland with open arms. I cannot wait to talk to Prince Peter von Waldenburg, to engage in discussions about how much has changed since our forces last met on the field of battle. Indeed, it would be an honor, and if West Island stands the attack we shall welcome him with open arms here. If not, then somewhere more safer and secure.

With Deepest Respects and Highest Honors,
Caster Oblivion
Acting Chief Governor of the United Republic of Anagonia

"Perhaps one day," said Caster as he sat in the Meeting Room, "we can repay this favor."

"I believe we must," said one General as he casually gazed at the widescreen display on the far wall, "It is imperative we repay this act of goodwill and honor." Caster nodded at the other side of the rectangular table, merely looking over the recent battle reports for the fleet sent to engage the TPF forces. The casualties were expected, but each death pained him greatly. A few minutes passed, and he gazed at the General after sighing. "Am I doing a good job, Robert?"

Robert Manning looked up from reading a report from another theatre, lifting an eyebrow. "Sir?" Caster slumped forward, using his elbows for support as he hid his head in his arms. A moment later he rose his head, exhaustion gripping his features. "I mean, am I doing the right thing?"

Robert slowly sat the open folder down on the desk, crossing his hands and fingers as he adjusted himself in the seat. He sighed softly, looking down for a moment. "I don't think I can judge that, sir." Caster placed his head into his arms again, "I just don't know anymore, Robert. I've always been second to the Chief Governor's, never first." Robert moved his eyes upward to gaze at Caster, "I think your doing fine, sir."

Caster shook his head, "I sent over three thousand people to their deaths. All for a diversion." His shoulders jumped, a sound of whimpering from him. "Johnny's dead, the Capital building destroyed, civilians dying, and now were under threat of being invaded." Robert hummed to himself for a moment, never having seen a Chief Commander in Caster's emotional state. He felt kin to him, though. His emotions were flaring, but he had enough training to contain the. "I don't think you can do anymore than your doing, Caster."

Caster looked up at the formal statement of his first name, an eyebrow raised. His eyes were red, suggesting he'd been shedding tears. Robert gave a half grin, rocking back and forth in his chair. "Waldenburg is helping us now, and two other enemies joined in to defend our existence." Robert tilted his head slightly, "I think your doing a fine job considering the circumstances."

Caster raised himself, gaining composure again, then nodding slowly. "Thank you," he said as he looked away and at the screen, "I really appreciate yours and everyone's help." Robert gave a short chuckle, standing and grabbing the folder to leave. Before he left the room, he caught Caster's gaze. Robert bowed his head, "That's our job, sir. Keeping you Commanders going." Caster smiled, looking down at the folder before him, and began reviewing the document again.

Parade March of the Ever Victorious Third Army (http://www.marsches.narod.ru/deutsch/Altpreussischer_Parademarsch.mp3)

With sore feet and an aching back, for the plane ride had been in excess of sixteen hours Peter von Waldenburg undid his fastener and eased himself slowly to his feet. No matter what spacious quarters were provided, no matter the ornamentation and upholstery of the seats there was only so much any one man could take. And the Prince, so accustomed to the desert and thousands of miles of sand on either side felt entirely too cramped.

“Savor it boy.” Across the cabin senior officers were rushing to their feet and gathering up their coats and hats to depart the plane and greet the Waldenburger troops even now assembling in parade formation. “You only get one.” There was only one person that would attempt to speak to a prince as such and Peter had not even noticed him amongst the braid and brilliance. “And then once you’re there,” two arthritic fingers were raised to eye height and a snap was attempted, “It’s gone. No more glory, just the guts.”

“General Smithy,” he was the oldest member still in service in the Imperial Army and had worn his uniform for over sixty years; now almost blind and with wandering mind he had become a personal friend and confidant of the Emperor, as he usual forgot anything he was told by next morning. His age excused him from most formalities and he would often be found at the Imperial table demanding to know who stole his fork while the remainder of the family was in silent prayer. “I did not know you were accompanying us on this mission.”

“I wasn’t,” the old man smiled revealing a set of surprisingly perfect teeth, “but I haven’t taken any leave in thirty seven years. This is my last little fling before the grave. But this isn’t my first,” he smiled again, his eyes closed either from blindness or tiredness Peter was unsure, “walk slowly. Remember it all, every stitch of the flags, every glinting saber, and the sound of the jackboots on cobblestone. And, with any luck you will never have to be reminded of it.” Smithy lapsed into silence and his head slumped against his chest.

Peter took this as his sign to leave, and after a polite moment, donned his peaked cap, fastened the command cloak around his neck and walked towards the boarding hatch.

From the chair one last grunt erupted as the old man angled his head and spoke one more time, “Your cousin, the Emperor, wants so much for change. He wants it so very much, and he has always been a dreamer. Take not one step back Peter, but walk carefully.”

Martial music could be heard from outside as the first Waldenburger regiments began their parade. Peter stepped out onto the tarmac, and despite himself began to take in every detail just as was told to do. In studying every face, he found a sullen defiance, of odds or orders he was not sure but with parade smartness they formed their regiments and battalions. An honor guard, sabers raised, formed an arch under which the Prince walked. A thousand eyes were trained on him as the army came to crashing attention.

With a stoicism he did not feel, Peter returned the salute then continued at a much brisker pace to a small outbuilding. The West Islands had been a natural destination, it seemed the war would peak on this spit of land and Anagonia would need every man that could stand to fight. “Captain,” he waved to a dazzled officer who in turn scampered to his side. “Go and find this Chief Governor or someone in charge. Some sort of policy meeting is in order; I also wish to meet this man privately at some point; there is so much for us to discuss. “ The captain jogged off, fighting for space between three APCs that angled for the limited path off the runway.

A small crowd of other officers gathered about a small folding table and studied a small set of field maps while snapping at one another in Waldenburger Latin. Peter approached and caught the eye of General Gröning who nodded wearily before slinking over and whispering, “We shall have to purchase abut forty native vehicles. I’m afraid all our staff cars were shot out of the air as well as several of the ambulances and movers.”

Peter waved this away and took a studied look at the map on the folding table, “we shall need a house or something for a headquarters. By the waterfront if possible, would you arrange it. We might be having visitors later.”

Near The Western Islands

After the initial contact report and subsequent destruction of the small surface fleet sent to oppose them Furst had been quick to chaside and punish those operators who had mistakenly thought a whole fleet had been arrayed against them. Such mistakes could be very deadly to pilots and sailors, but thankfully nothing had occurred to harm anybody. Now, as the fleet came ever closer to the islands, all activity and thought was focused on the upcoming amphibious assualt.

Before the amphibious attack could take place, the enemy island would need to be cleared of hostile aircraft and anti-shipping missiles. Thus, the armada had close within two hundred kilometers of the island. This would give the combat planes adequate range to attack, but also place them under the protection of the armada's anti-air defenses. For the amphibious land to succeed, most of the enemies aircraft, anti-air defenses, and shore defense would have to be destroyed. The air offensive would last twenty-four hours a day, and, in combination with cruise missile strike decimate the enemy.

During night, the first waves of aircraft launched off the decks of the carriers and towards their targets. Most of them were fighters and electronic warfare craft equipped with HARM missiles. Once an enemy SAM radar was detected, the HARM missiles would destroy the radar, and then a cruise missile or bomb would follow, destroying the launchers and ammo themselves. AWACS and the shipborne radars would be careful to look where enemy aircraft vectored from, and then recon UAV's would be sent to identify the airfields. Furst and his commanders were expecting heavy losses especially in the first days of the offensive. But they were confident that the enemies air-defense abilities would be destroyed and the landing could proceed. Any sign of the enemy fleet would be met with a full offensive, so with that thought in mind Furst listened to the radio reports carefully as the first warplanes crossed into the islands airspace.

OOC: I take it you landed on West Island's then? Also TPF, I managed to scrounge up the info on West Islands. Lemme get it up here.

West Island - Airbase Alpha

The United Republic had grown since its founding two-thousand and nine years ago, now in relation to the size of Modern Russia in relation to land ratio. The West Island could easily be placed inside the State of Pennsylvania in relation, considering the dimension relations of the country and island as a whole. The one thing that many people don't realize about the West Islands, and few even consider, is that even despite its size it was capable of defenses in small pockets and large open spaces. Lush, green, dense forests surrounded the mountainous region of West Island where most of the military installations resided; the forest hiding the secret passageways and extensive military defenses from both orbital and most ground observations.

At the end of the Forest line was a large expanse of fortified concrete about as high as the tree-line. This defense had taken forty years to complete, many of those years spent redoing old construction techniques. Parts of the Wall, as it was known, were weak and in need of repair. However either through operations or reconstruction, most of the Wall managed to be well maintained and served as a protection looking onward to the large expanse of beaches that served as both tourist recreation and military pass-time. The defenses of the wall included various Anti-Air and Anti-Sea platforms, radar installations including Cannon Emplacements to repel boarding ships. Most of these defenses were protected by the extensive thickness of the Wall, allowing for survivability long enough to produce desires defensive results.

To the Southwest of West Island lay Airbase Alpha, fully constructed in a small piece of the land still above water. Here an open airbase was stationed, most of the command capability underground for further protection. This was where the Waldenburg Forces had been directed to land, and where Caster Oblivion had been directed to meet with the Prince. Welcoming for the Waldenburgian Forces was warm and polite, with offerings of command space and bunks for the troops. Supply's that were lost to the Waldenburgian Trip were indeed going to be replaced by Anagonian Assets, therefore continuing the friendship between the two forces.

A helicopter promptly arrived after the wandering Waldenburgian officer had informed the Anagonian Command of the need for the Prince to talk to the Acting Chief Governor. Caster Oblivion promptly exited the Black Hawk, realizing time was short, and went about inquiring the Prince's location and the need for urgency.

West Island - Tactical Defense Response

West Island had been constructed just for this type of situation. As the Fortress of Anagonia, it was to keep the Motherland from Harm with the capability to bring an enemy invasion force to its knee's quickly and efficiently. Obviously the original constructors of West Island never concluded that a total of 2,130 enemy ships would be knocking at its doorstep. Yet the islands inhabitants were well prepared for what was to come. Radar Installations on the island were protected by various defenses, including varients of the ALQ-157M infra-red guided missile countermeasure's and the SLQ-32 shipboard ECM package system. However, during the first stages of the war the Radar Installations were overridden and Homeland Radar installations jointly acting with Satellite and Orbital Optics would provide the information needed to West Island Command to coordinate the defensive strikes.

These defenses also protected the Anti-Air and Anti-Sea assets, joining in with the Anti-Missile assets that littered the Island. To respond first to the threat of air invasion would take time, therefore a waiting period would be needed for the aircraft to get closer. During this period, Salvo's along the interior of the Island opened and began launching Tomahawk Cruise Missiles designed for Anti-Ship Offensives, numbering in the hundreds as they lifted from the island and began to fly towards the enemy fleet far off in the distance. Along the Islands exterior Mountain Ranges were stationed Patriot TMD (PAC-3) Anti-Missile defensive installations (http://www.fas.org/spp/starwars/program/patriot.htm) that coordinated with shore-based information and satellite feeds. If and when the cruise missiles activated the exterior defensive perimeter provided by long range active/passive pulse RADAR from the Homeland Shore, they would begin launching the Single-stage, short-range, low-to high-altitude missiles once the Cruise Missiles breached the 15 Kilometer range mark.

Anti-Air defenses consisted of a variety of Anti-Aircraft missile installations jointly coordinating with both Homeland-based and Space-based Logistical Assets. The MIM-72/M48 Chaparral Forward Area Air-Defense System (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/chaparral.htm) mounted in fixed positions provided the mainstay of the short-range defenses of both the Wall and interior forests. A few of the installations littered the Mountains, protected by both man-made and natural cover. Extending the Anti-Air defenses were HAWK surface to air missile system (http://www.fas.org/spp/starwars/program/hawk.htm) which was effective against electronic countermeasures. These installations served as the second volley to the Cruise Missiles, if launched, and therefore launched hundreds of missiles in response to the Aircraft being launched, specifically wanting to target the AWAC's assets.

Both exposed and internal mountain airbases were protected by these assets, making bombing extremely difficult even for the most advanced Counter-Measure system. Aircraft, as the fleet would undoubtedly notice, would not have launched at this point. The entire defense of the island was with the First-Stage Missile Response, and would follow with another response before allowing aircraft to actually fly in defense of the Island. In total, the Tomahawk Variant Missiles numbered around two-hundred, each self-guided and coordinating with Orbital Assets to target mainly the carriers of the enemy fleet seen from Space and on Ground. The HAWK surface-to-air missile defense installations primarily targeted the aircraft, numbering near a thousand first responding missiles as they individually targeted AWACS within range and aircraft within range. The MIM-72/M48 Chaparral Forward Area Air-Defense System, guided by self-radar, would not activate until the aircraft approached within 1,000 yards of each installations. Therefore, these installations remained dormant until Command issued defensive orders to the computerized units.

Over The Islands
Furst jolted his head up in surprise as klaxons started blaring inside his command vessel. Running over to the radar station, he nearly tripped over some loose wires and immediately curse loudly for somebody to get them fixed. Furst was known for his temper, but he was also known for staying remarkably cool and collected under pressure. Squinting at the radar he saw the cause for alarm. Several hundred enemy cruise missiles had been launched from the mountainous region of the islands and were now accelerating towards the fleet. Quickly, the WarZone BMS system, based off the Cromwell II of Lyran-fame, worked with the air-defense umbrella to address the new threats. It wasn't long before the various units in the umbrella had their assigned targets. Town-Class cruisers unleashed one Sea Sabre missiles for every enemy cruise missile, intercepting them hundreds of kilometers away from the main fleet, then, CAP fighter aircraft let loose an additional missile at the enemy cruise missiles. If any survived, they could easily be destroyed. Fourth Armada would literally need to be saturated by thousands of advanced cruise missiles to be seriously hurt, or a much more complicated attack then missile spam.

Radar had also quickly triangulated the launch sites of the enemy cruise missiles, and quickly, Hellion cruise missiles equipped with penetrating warheads were launched from the Battleaxe cruisers. The information was also relayed to the AWACS, which gave orders to the warplanes over the island to divert some of their combat power to an attack on the silos. Meanwhile, several squadrons accelerated towards the enemy airfield where UAV's had spotted Waldenburg troops landing. An attack now, when they were still milling around on the airfield and tired from the long plane ride, would have a devastating effect. One hundred Hellion cruise missiles were also launched at the airfield, equipped with crater-making munitions to ruin the airfield and cluster bombs to make repair impossible and inflict damage on the enemy.

Safeguard AWACS' also detected radar lighting up all over the mountain ranges, as HAWK missiles fired towards several aircraft making runs over the mountains. Captain Kirk Jacobs was one of these pilots, and his heart rate spiked dramatically as his HUD starting blaring "Missile Lock-On." His wingmate had also been targeted, and they activated the afterburner and countermeasure systems. But they had been flying too close to the mountains, and the HAWK's slammed into the aircraft, turning them into a bright fireball in the night sky and ejecting wreckage all over the mountain sides. Quickly, squadrons nearby targeted the enemy radars with their stand-off HARMs. Since they could be launched from over 100km away, the planes were safe from retaliation from the SAM's. Once the radars had been destroyed, strike aircraft accelerated at maximum speed over the mountains, initatin an attack run and dropping GPS-guided bombs and cluster munitions, decimating the enemy launchers.

The attack, so far, was going well. But the first casualties reminded everybody involved that this was a serious conflict, one with real death and all pilots felt themselves tense a little more at that thought.

West Islands - Tactical Defense Response Phase II

Around the Island, Patriot TMD (PAC-3) Anti-Missile Defensive Installations came to life to launch counter-measures against the incoming cruise missiles. For each Cruise Missile, two Patriot PAC-3's were launched to ensure a quick kill, resulting in around fifty installations coming to life. Most of the installations surrounded the Airfield where the Waldenburg troops were currently stationed, resulting in a display of mach-speed missiles flying into the distance with the assistance of triangulated guidance systems. It would be extremely hard to detect exactly where and how these PAC-3's were launched due to the outstanding counter-measures built in. Furthering the defensive capability, a Counter-Measure was activated to "ghost" the missiles and create more accurate signals for enemy RADAR, making targeting the actual missiles slightly difficult.

Countering the incoming HARM missiles was an array of defensive installations situated at the base of the mountains for extended cover. These installations adapted the SM-2 Extended Range (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/missile/sm-2.htm) Counter-Measure Defense Systems for ground base installation protection.The array's were arranged in a particular fashion, with a defense perimeter initiated by both RADAR and Joint-RADAR from the Homeland. Targeting the incoming HARM's, multiple Standard-2 missile's were launched as the first wave of protection for the installations targeted. One missile launched for each missile incoming. Twenty-six installations with multiple launch silo's were activated for Missile Defense.

The Cruise Missile Silo's that had activated numbered around fifteen, and therefore proceeded to protect the guided nuclear ballistic missiles that was stored deep underground. Thankfully only the Tomahawk Silo Launchers were available to be decimated, all fifteen suffering heavy damage and further unable to launch cruise missiles. However, as soon as the aircraft dared over the mountains, twenty six HAWK surface to air missile system's and MIM-72/M48 Chaparral Forward Area Air-Defense System's activated to engage and destroy the aircraft. A total response was two missiles, one from each installation, for every aircraft that flew past detection and flight ranges.

The original HAWK surface to air missile system's that launched the first volley against the incoming aircraft numbered around thirty, all placed within the forested and mountainous ranges. If these were destroyed, it would place a minimal blow to the defenses. Firing off another volley towards aircraft approaching, numbering around five hundred this time due to the lessening of enemy aircraft, the HAWK platforms went inactive as counter-measures started to activate to protect the installations from destruction.

The HAWK installations within the mountains could not be defended from bombing runs, and therefore were heavily damaged or destroyed. The Installations that were destroyed numbers around eighteen launchers, and therefore bringing a minimal gap in the Mountains Air Defenses.

Islands

"Now things were becoming interesting." Thought Furst, as he gathered the latest reports from his commanders. The enemy air defenses were now lighting up the radar screen like a Christmas tree, as at least fifty new Patriot installations were spotted. The Hellion cruise missiles were soon also attacked by enemy SAM's, the intelligent missiles soon diverted some of themselves to attack the installation, and the Hellions also activated their ECM and flare and chaff countermeasures. Despite these measures, most of the Hellions were destroyed by the highly accurate Patriots. Only a few managed to get past the enemies air defense. Furst knew that most of the SAM network would need to be destroyed before more cruise missile strikes could be launched.

ELINT aircraft and signal intelligence were now also busy conducting electronic missions, attempting to locate holes in the radar coverage of the island, as well as monitoring radio from the enemy and jamming their radars. It was hoped that enough of the enemy radar would be jammed now for a successful attack.

Given that the enemy was defended against long-range HARM strikes, the warplanes were ordered to execute an attack on the Patriot sites via a high-speed, low-altitude attack mission, using cluster munitions and H-23 bombs, modified version of the Hellion designed for bombing use. At least four planes were detailed for the attack runs. Given that the enemy had no AAA around their missile sites, it meant that the attack runs under the radar would devastate the enemy sites without taking casualties. Or at least it was was the hope. It was a deadly mistake for the enemy to make. Along with the cluster munitions, the planes would drop H-23's equipped with WAGV's, equipped with MEFP's, the thermal imagery sensors would detect the erector launchers and radar sites, and decimate them accordingly.

A greater problem emerged as newly found HAWK batteries activated and launched missiles at the aircraft sent to take the old one's out. The high-speed, maneuvering, electronic measures, and countermeasures helped to reduce damage, but fifteen aircraft were hit or destroyed, more than half of the two squadrons sent against the batteries. More squadrons would follow behind now, destroying these new-found HAWK launchers.

Aboard Furst's flagship, morale remained high even as the latest casualty reports filtered in. The enemies air-defense network was slowly, but surely being destroyed, and so far casualties had been much lower than expected. New bombing runs, cruise missile strikes, and electronic warfare elements were concentrated on three large beaches. Furst had given the go for the Marines to land in the early morning, given the enemy response so far. Despite that, Furst and his commanders still had several hours of air action to worry about.

From the Mainland, three E-3 Sentries had taken off prior to the start of Phase II of the Tactical Defense. They initiated protocol and started to circle behind the island to provide the RADAR systems that were blocked with more uplink to Satellite Capable Jointly Operated Systems (SCJOS), enabling a fixed ranged for the defenses and counter-acting the ECM measures from the enemy with heavy ECCM measures. Protecting them, and eventually to be found, was a Carrier Task Force that had previously stayed from the battle. Unknown to the enemy fleet as of present, the task force was the remainder of the naval units currently stationed to defend the Motherland. Various Fighter and Interceptor aircraft provided defenses, with Cruiser's locked to Anti-Missile defenses for the Sentries. They stayed out of the main battle for the Island, preferring to lay back and wait the situation out.

The Battle for Anagonia would be played out in West Island, all depending on the defensive and offensive capabilities. Phase III initiated with the Island hangers and underground launch facilities releasing a virtual armada of F-35 Lightning II's equipped with AIM-120D Advanced Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile's that could attack an enemy aircraft from 165 kilometers away. The VTOL version took off quickly, numbering around sixty-three, from underground hangers surrounded by Anti-Missile Defenses that were previously covered. The mountains launched the Non-VTOL versions from one-time use hangers, numbering around twenty-six. Additional to the forces were F-22 Raptor's equipped with the same payload as the F-35's, launching in order from multiple underground hangers that were shielded from view by either a mountain or natural cover.

Four Patriot TMD (PAC-3) Anti-Missile Defensive Installations were the target of the remaining cruise missile strikes, being obliterated and creating a brief gap in the defensive line of the mountains. The remaining PAC-3 installations went offline to collaborate defensive computations with the Mainframe of the island and await further orders to attack incoming long-range missile threats. Following the near-fatal blow to the defensive network, and with the assistance of the newly stationed Sentries, Joint-Logistical Collaboration ensued to ensure that most Island installations maintained a proper defensive position against enemy threats.

The HAWK surface to air missile system's fell victim to further air strikes, but for each one destroyed two more popped up to launch a volley of missiles at the seemingly endless line of aircraft. Furthering the assault was the quick response of the MIM-72/M48 Chaparral Forward Area Air-Defense System's which were somehow left out of the bombing. Some of the remaining HAWK installations suffered obliteration in the Forested area, but the few that survived counter-attacked.

The aircraft in the air would head towards the aircraft in the island and the four aircraft heading towards the island to unleash their AIM-120D Advanced Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile's, one for each aircraft, and commence dog fighting procedures.

The fifty Patriot Launchers being targeted for bombing runs were quite Vulnerable. The stationed Gepards and S-300VM launchers would prove quite useless against strafing targets. Therefore it was up to the Fighters, whom continued to launch their AIM-120D Advanced Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile's at enemy fighters within the islands perimeter and outside of it, to protect the launchers from total destruction. Undoubtedly there would be impacts, as a few patriots started to go up in explosions already.

Behind the fleet, and apparently forgotten, ten Shuka-B Akula Class Attack Submarine's lurked separately and took their marks with passive sonar, maintaining the ever Silent Running of the Submarine Fleet. When the situation was right, and the approximate time for the operation was to begin, they tried to get close enough under the enemies advanced ASW protection to launch twenty VA-111 Shkval 2's Torpedoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VA-111_Shkval) targeting the enemy carriers specifically. The remaining submarines, both Seawolf and Virgina Classes, lurked elsewhere far from the ten Akula's but within minimal range to keep track.

Lighting up the long-range detection of the enemy fleet would be the appearance of a vast Armada of ships loosely joined. Vladimir Kerov's and John Wilson's fleet were joined, separating slowly to take both sides of the enemy Armada as they remained out of long-range weapons range. On the other side of West Island, Oscar Vladinchi's Armada approached for long-range sensor's to detect. Soon these three fleet's would combine for a massive assault on the enemy fleet, therefore hopefully crippling the numbers.

Lurking just beyond the Sea of Independence was the remainder of the Motherland Defense Fleet, twenty more Akula's making way for the enemy flet at Silent running to make up for the predicted losses of the ten Akula's that sacrificed themselves valiantly.

Early morning, Islands

Things had heated up dramatically. The BMS and commanders were now coping with dozens of bombing runs, missile launches, and other crisis. A small victory had been scored as fifty enemy Patriot defense systems were obliterated by the bombing runs without a single plane loss. Cheers went up in the command centers, but the euphoria was quickly cut short as missiles were spotted racing towards the warplanes. Stealth aircraft had apparently been launched, and undetected by radar, had launched a barrage of missiles at the aircraft. The attack was sudden, but the long range allowed some reaction time Spectres and other aircraft dove to the decks of the island, accelerating to maximum speed and launching countermeasures. This allowed for some success, but the planes took their largest hit yet, as over thirty were hit or destroyed, and only a few managed to limp back to the carriers.

Spectre's fitted for the air superiority role had been waiting for this, and the squadrons accelerated rapidly towards the spotted enemy F-35's. Using AWACS and their own powerful radars, they were able to identify them and unleashed their own-long range missiles at the enemies, before accelerating to close in with the stealth aircraft and engage with short-range missiles. Behind them, fighter-bombers move to destroy the airfields where they were launched from. Just one cluster or cratering bomb could put the airfields out of action, and command wanted to exploit this to the fullest. Additional cruise missile strike were also launched, they were small, in groups of just six, and six total groups were launched. These Hellions maneuvered themselves through the enemy gaps in radar coverage and towards the airfields. The enemy airfields would soon be out of action, and the hostile aircraft would not be able to re-arm or re-fuel. Meanwhile, using ELINT and UAV recon, more enemy missile sites and other defenses had been discovered, and the planes also began to attack these, in much the same fashion as the Patriot batteries. Seventy aircraft had been lost in the last hour, almost a carrier's worth. Yet progress was being made.

It was then that the fleet suffered their worst defeat yet. Several enemy submarines had been able to penetrate the ASW defenses and had closed within range of striking a Triumph class carrier. Before anybody could react, several torpedoes had slammed into the carrier, breaking its kneel and detonating some of its ammunition and fuel caches. The massive ship exploded into a huge fireball as it broke in two, and over one thousand sailors would die. The rest of the day would be filled with rescuing horridly burned sailors from the fiery water and recvoring what supplies could be recovered. While the enemy submarines were quickly sunk, the morale had taken a noticeable dip.

Furst ordered ASW protection to be prioritized, as the deaths, so close to home had him saddened deeply. Despite this, he resolved himself to fight even harder and now his attention shifted to the raging air battles and Marine landing.

Across the armada, helicopters rose off the decks of amphibious ships, Salamander amphibious assualt vehicles exited the deck, and several thousand Marines assaulted the beach under the cover of naval vessels and aircraft, this had been achieved as a portion of the fleet had moved much closer to shore, allowing for the Salamander and helicopter assualt. Once the beach was secured, massive hovercrafts would land on the shore delivering more troops, vehicles, and artillery, as well as supplies so the advance could begin. Given the proliferation of enemy air defenses it was decided, along with SEAD, to have ground troops land and begin taking the sites. Special Forces troops would be used significantly in this operation. The invasion was under way, but there was still plenty of combat to be done.

West Island - Invasion Protocol

The enemy would detect the entire airspace lighting up as twenty Patriot TMD (PAC-3) Anti-Missile Defensive Installations activated within the forested area's. Launching multiple missiles towards the Cruise Missiles, detected via assisted thanks to the E-3 Sentries and relayed to Central Command for operation execution. Two missiles were fire for each Cruise Missile, the Sentries clocking and designating each target detected as one by one the ECCM screen revealed their presence.

On the range of the mountains near where the Hangers were the one-time use hanger's were located, all available aircraft had been deployed. Each strike against these hangers was a superficial blow, and therefore allowed to happen. However concerning the concealed hangers that launched the VTOL F-35's and the mountain Hanger's that launched the F-22's, previously undetected HAWK surface to air missile system's activated via Pop-Up units placed on the side of the mountains near the hanger. Additionally, MIM-72/M48 Chaparral Forward Area Air-Defense System's activated on the mountain sides and began firing at the enemy fighter-bombers. In total, for every fighter bomber within range and detected thanks to the E-3 Sentries Joint-Configuration, one missile for each aircraft was fired from the HAWK emplacements and two missiles were fired for each aircraft from the Chaparral emplacements.

AIM-120D Advanced Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile Installations began activating to launch a counter-offensive against the continued barrage of aircraft in the area. Some missiles went to intercept the Cruise Missiles, measuring one per missile, while others took their targets for the Aircraft and launched two missiles per aircraft within range. Obviously the Island Commanders were getting irritated by the huge amount of enemy presence on the island, and this was their response. In total, ten more AIM-120D Installations activated for this procedure.

Additional Aircraft hangers revealed themselves under the protection of ECCM emplacements within the forest on the other side of the island. Any fighter aircraft of the enemy coming near would be instantly destroyed by the extensive defenses this side of the island, therefore making this area the prime for launching aircraft. Four hidden hangers were used for this purpose, launching a total of sixty three more F-22 Raptor's with Anti-Air weaponry. They quickly took loose formation to counter attack the enemy after ensuring their take-off wasn't detected. A few of the new supplement took the time to take the Mountain Passage west and raise upwards to begin attacking any UAV or other aircraft snooping around to gain the advantage.

The aircraft already in the sky experienced hell as they fired and were fired upon. Somehow the enemy got passed their stealth defenses, which was near impossible unless you had advanced equipment. The satisfying thing to note was that you could mostly avoid such things by slipping into the mountains, which most of the F-22's did, making come-bout's and returning missile fire and getting close enough for their 20 mm (0.787 in) M61A2 Vulcan Gatling gun's to strike home. The F-35's didn't fare as well, most of the original squadron failing to escape in time and suffering heavy losses. Some managed to do the same Maneuver as the Raptor pilots, escaping certain death thanks to both Anti-Missile Counter Measures and risky flying. Others either slammed into the mountains or exploded from missile impact. The remaining birds in the air numbered as 5 VTOL Capable F-35's, with 8 F-35's non-VTOL, and with the new additions up to 72 F-22 Raptors.

On the beach it was a different story. Slowly, massive Mk 7 - 16-inch/50 caliber Cannons rose, turrets shifting as automatic loading already took place. They took aim at the approaching Hovercraft and Salamander landing vessels. Firing two shots every minutes, then hiding as it was quickly reloaded, assisted in quick deliver. The turrets were stationed every 500 feet on the wall, making good use of spacing. M109A6 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer, emerging from quick release pathway's from underground passages miles back began forming up under the dense forest cover, ensuring to go far from their entrances, and then began setting up Artillery Fire onto the beaches. With orbital GPS and Sentry guidance, it was an easy deal to get the right trajectory to make the beach a literal ground for explosions.

Coming above the wall came a horde of RAH-66 Comanche's, silent and deadly thanks to their stealth designs, and began unleashing their Hydra Air to Ground Missiles upon unsuspecting transports and hovercraft. They also targeted any aircraft near the vicinity with AIM-92 Stinger's, some F-22's from the original engagement provided air cover, about three flying over the beach.

Gun Bunker emplacements on the Wall provided ample cover for projectile weaponry, including a few turrets equipped with Mk 28 - 5-inch/38 caliber guns and several multi-turreted emplacements with M242 Bushmaster 25mm (25x137mm) chain gun's to mow down unsuspecting Marines. Anti-Air was provided by many HAWK and Chaparral emplacements that could "pop-up" when activated, which currently they were not activated and under the cover of the Wall.

7:42 AM, Bundeskriegsministerium Building
Hauptstadt, Leistung

The war room at the Bundeskriegsministerium building (which the Army brass had constantly reminded the public would have its name changed eventually) was abuzz with activity on that January morning. News of The People’s Freedom attack on Anagonia had been streaming in at a breakneck pace over the last few days, and with full knowledge of the consequences of coming to the aid of their ally, the Leistungi government had finally reached a decision the night before. The six most powerful figures in the Leistungi military had assembled in the war room to brief the Chancellor on the situation.

“Operation Schildknappe is set to kick off in several hours,” Großadmiral Jonas Beckenbauer started, getting straight to the point. “Its primary goal is to relieve the men and women of the Anagonian military and drive the Holy Reich’s attack back to the sea.” His voice had taken a tone that could almost be considered bored, and he was checking his watch every few seconds. The other men in the room could not have looked any different, and each of them rustled papers nervously and cringed as Beckenbauer spoke, as if each word spoken by the Großadmiral was another nail in their coffin. In a way it was—every man in the room knew that the Holy Reich would be backed up by Lyras, and defeating the Lyrans would prove to be a monumental task, even for the combined military might of Anagonia, Leistung, and strangely enough, Waldenburg.

Of course, no one was particularly thrilled about having to join forces with Leistung’s most hated former adversaries, but as there seemed to be little choice, the men would have to grin and bear it, so to speak. Beckenbauer continued the briefing, handing the Chancellor a stamped and sealed folder and tearing the top off to reveal the top secret plans inside. “Three Heersgruppen will be transported by sea and air to bases on the Anagonian mainland, the primary landing zone being Drezna in central Anagonia.” He paused once more, clicking the next slide into place on the projector. “We will approach the theater from the south, where the Holy Reich’s forces have not yet reached, and traverse the Drezna Canal to reach the Sea of Liberty. The Sea is a relatively good place to stage our landings from. I’ll turn you over to Generaloberst Koenig, who I’m sure will want to go over the land attack plan with you.” The Admiral motioned towards an old, plump man sitting at the far side of the table.

Generaloberst Kiefer Koenig was a relic of the old Leistung, before the Cantons had united. A man nearing eighty-four, Koenig wore full Prussian-esque military garb, complete with the six separate Iron Crosses and a variety of other medals he had won in wars innumerable. He had avoided forced retirement with his brilliant counteroffensive in the war against Noern, and had been a valued adviser to the Chancellor ever since. He spoke with a heavy Keinberg accent, which, combined with his wheezing, made him nearly impossible to understand.

“Thank you, Großadmiral,” he started, pronouncing the “–mi” sound in “admiral” as a “-me,” rather than a “-mer” sound. “From roads branching off of Drezna, we can easily reach the strategic cities of Imperius, Rudavia, and Union City by land, avoiding the Holy Reich’s naval forces until it is advantageous for us to strike.”

The Chancellor raised a hand to silence the old general. “Thank you, but there’s a reason why I leave the planning to you six,” he said, keeping his eyes trained on the papers arrayed in front of him. “What I’m really interested in is the contribution of the Waldenburg Empire—this here says that they’re flying nearly two hundred thousand men in to aid Anagonia. Who is the officer leading the attack?”

Koenig squirmed uncomfortably in his chair. He knew that this question was going to come up, but he at least hoped that he wouldn’t be the one on the spot when it was asked. “Vice Admiral Thousis, Chancellor.”

“Dear Lord, are you serious?” he demanded, his eyes immediately darting off of the papers to rest squarely on the general. “Do you realize what that means?”

Beckenbauer cut the general off before he could begin speaking. “It means nothing, sir. In fact, no one beyond this room is aware that Thousis is leading the attack—in Leistung, anyways.”

“So we should just ignore the fact that the “Butcher of Hafenstadt” is within striking distance of our military?”

“In this case, sir, yes,” Beckenbauer responded, shrugging slightly. “He can be dealt with later, but as for now, the Holy Reich presents a greater threat to Anagonia, and by extension, the Federal Republic.”

The Chancellor shook his head slightly, but pushed the thought from his mind soon thereafter. Beckenbauer was right, of course, as always. Besides, he was in Hafenstadt for the battle, and he knew as well as any in the Leistungi government that the atrocities committed by the Waldenburger Vice Admiral, while certainly terrible in their own right, were vastly over-reported by the media immediately following the event. Capturing the man would certainly catapult him into a third term and boost feelings of national unity and morale in the men, though, so there was still merit in having Thousis captured and tried. The mission to capture him would simply have to wait until Anagonia was free from the threat of invasion.

Over The Beach

It wasn't long before cannon fire from previously unknown areas began raining heavy shells down on the incoming Salamanders. Luckily, they were spread out quite well, and only a few met an early fate at the hands of the guns. For the commanders involved, it seemed that the Anagonias had made the cannons retract back into the ground. An interesting idea, but they could hardly do it fast enough. Before they were even retracted for the first time, they were targets by the Spectres flying overhead and bunker-busting and thermobaric bombs were flung at the cannons through high-speed and low passes. The same was done with the self-propelled artillery. The enemy would have been better off waiting for the troops to actually land, but command planned to exploit this. Meanwhile the helicopters faced an assualt from enemy "stealth" helicopters, which were quickly detected. Helicopters could not really be stealth, the rotors gave off to much of a radar signature no matter how much RAM coating was applied. Several choppers went down to the enemy stingers, but Geckos soon engaged the enemy choppers as well as the escorting fighters.

Around half of the Hellion cruise missiles were promptly destroyed, the enemy radar has covered the gaps since the launch. However, around half got through, and continued towards their targets. Meanwhile, the air-to-air battle continued to rage over the mountain passes. The F-22's were extremely maneuverable, but so were the Spectre's and a winding battle at various altitudes continued. Many more went down, the aircraft count loss since the beginning of the night was now over one hundred. Short-range, high speed and maneuverable missiles like the Arc (http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/index.php?showtopic=5168) and gun fire now dominated the close in fight. Despite heavy losses on both sides, the air battle was unlikely to be over soon.

Fighting also continued near the beachheads, as strike aircraft moved in for attacks on the wall- raining down H-23's and bunker busting mutinous before pulling off. Around the mountains, more and SAM sites were being spotted through ELINIT, EW, and SIGNIT missions, and strike aircraft continued to engage. Rather than risking the wrath of the HAWK missiles, which had a low-range, the aircraft launched their munitions from much further away. Despite the continued progress, the commanders expected the air war to last many more days, even as the land invasion had began. Once the cannons and the 'wall' were destroyed, the Marines would be free to establish fire bases and begin the offensive.

West Island - Invasion Defense Protocol

It wasn't long before the wall began to crumble, shattering into thousands of pieces thanks to every explosion. Some turrets, a few like the twin-turreted M61A2 Vulcan Gatling Gun's, continued firing despite the crew's inside knowing their inevitable fate. The RAH-66 Helicopters were destroyed in droves, a few managing to continue the strikes, while the others that were hit either exploded against the wall or the forest. Fighters continued to attack the enemy Spectres, trying to multi-manage fighting the Gecko's as well. The Paladin Tanks were promptly destroyed, having been revealed far too early.

It was too late for any Anti-Missile Defenses to stop the Cruise Missiles as the mountain and forest hangers previously targeted were struck, one by one. Four more Hangers went totally out of commission. Now only two remained, with a possible third housing helicopters somewhere in the forest. This left open the underground passages for deployment of the Islands Reserve Ground Forces. But after the quick attack on the Paladin Tanks, Commanders were reluctant to engage the Marines until they entered the Jungle. There, AA defenses could fight off the enemy bird's while the ground troops fought equally with ground forces.

In the skies above the Island, fifteen more F-22's were doomed as the pilots were unable to cope with the new launch of Arc missiles. They responded with Close-range Sidewinders, most being the last of the arsenal. Other pilots, lucky to reserve their ammunition, concentrated on close-ranged gun fire to finish their enemies off. Both types of aircraft were equally suited for the role of air superiority, especially with the destruction of all the F-35's as those aircraft were struck quickly by Arc missiles.

Command realized the battle was going downhill fast. They began to mobilize both evacuation plans and ground troops to divert the enemies attention. In the center of the mountains lay the Buran/Energia launch complex, with a live Buran that was intended to take off. This would be left behind, unfortunately, as having it take off would spell certian doom for any cosmonauts or astronauts on board.

Meanwhile, AA Installation after AA Installation began running out of ammunition. Eventually, the last of the HAWK Missiles were used to engage the enemy air assets both towards the Beach and above the skies. Totaling in sixty three missiles, it was all the currently active stations had. With the jamming of frequencies by the Enemy, the normally huge AA supply was limited to what the Sentries could counter-act and control. Command now had to halt all missile fire and reserve the ammunition for later battles.

Beachhead
Furst looked around, a fat smile on his face. It was now midday, and the beachhead had been expanding considerably. Numerous supply dumps had been set up, and the perimeter had been extended ten kilometers inland. It had stayed there for the time being, as additional troops were brought to the front. The mass bulk of troops were still a day or so away, but the Marine commander as well as Furst wanted to begin offensive operations as soon as possible. The SEAD offensive had been a success. At a total cost of 130 aircraft and their lives of their crews. It was a hefty price, but a price much below that which had been expected. Now, the war would mostly pass over to the groundpounders realm of the things. Naval engineers were already on shore and were starting to construct airfields for transport aircraft and the like. Soon the jungles would also be cleared for construction of a proper airfields.

Late in the afternoon, the first patrols of Marines entered the jungle were the enemy forces were suspected to be. It was a small force of several companies, which began to spread out and filter all through the jungle. They were equipped with demolitions and hatchets to cut down the jungles for landing zones, and air was the best way to move through the zones. In the coming days, large sections of the jungle would be demolished so that firebases could be established. The ports in the area were also soon secured which would allow the armada to take on new supplies in the coming days. There was still much work to be done, before any attempt on the mainland could be made. But they had just scored a major victory and morale was very high. The men believed they could do anything, but the officers urged caution and modesty.
Waldenburg 2
04-01-2009, 17:57
It was as jumble of confusion; air strikes missiles and the pounding of running feet was quite startling to the Waldenburgers who had been expecting at least two days, at full numbers, to dig in and stretch their legs. Luckily when the first rockets began to strike the airstrip most of the men had begin to disperse towards barracks or were escorting supplies off the airstrip. The ponderous armored component however was not so lucky, and even though the precious heavy transports had departed sometime ago fuel trucks and maintenance crews were scampering over tanks and armored vehicles.

Later of course there was very little left but smoldering husks. It was believed the Anagonians had attempted to halt this assault; however efficient the system casualties were inevitable and the first rocket to strike struck a hurriedly constructed ammunition dump which exploded upward in a monumental column of flame and smoke. Heavy grade diesel fuel stuck like hot tar where it fell and tank crews were shot down by their comrades rather than being left to fry.

Blessedly, beyond almost eighty percent of the heavy vehicles brought in so far by Waldenburg, casualties were fairly light; most of the infantry had either fled when the bombing opened or had been elsewhere. A new landing strip would have to be arranged though as the flaming craters and scattered dead generally put pilots of their stride, and judging by the swiftness of this attack similar resistance would be expected in future.
--

Peter von Waldenburg and his cortege of officers barely flicked an eye when the first missiles began to fall; most of them had been mired to their waists in blood fighting hand to hand with the Empires enemies at some point or another and randomized missiles were hardly something that would concern them. A Blackhawk helicopter was their target and a sullen looking figure that stepped from it their goal. The Prince bowed his head under the whirling blades and approached to greet the man.

“Your Excellency,” he nodded slightly and began to turn away from the helicopter, “it is very good of you to come see us at a time like this. We were certainly not expecting you here of all places. I suggest however we relocate; this airstrip loses its attractions moment by moment. General von Gröning,” he had reached the original group and pointed to certain officers amongst the group and introduced them. “There are only a few questions I have; I realize it is wrong to keep you from your duties. First and for-most where do you want us? I have slightly less than 30,000 men mostly stormtroopers and light infantry. Secondly if this area is compromised where is the fall back point? I do not believe it wise to land the remainder of my Corp there; certainly it cannot be done here. We will form reserves it that is acceptable and hold till you and your command arrive, and then run from there. Thirdly, it’s damn good to be here. You don’t know what this means to me; to our country. Your Excellency, I am Prince Peter von Waldenburg and this has been a long time in coming,” a gloved hand was extended warmly.

"In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is" -Ayn Rand

A Admiral walked onto the bridge of a ship, the mighty S.S Moonlight, and for a instance could had been anywhere, in anyplace at anytime. As he looked among the waves and the peace it stirred within him the moment was lost as the skipper reported the sighting of land. The Carrier Group was now within the Sea of Freedom off the western Anagonia coast. Yet their were no missiles being fired,evasive manoeuvres being executed in dances of fleeing death. No all was calm for now for this carrier group flew under the Angaonia flag. Slowly with fighter coverage they made their way through the Drezna Canal and onto the Sea of Liberty until they got into the Avean Harbor where their marines and all their heavy equipment was to be dropped off near Union City within Union Bay. After that the carrier ordered their escorts be doubled and a extra Hawkeye was send up into the sky to watch for unfriendly birds. But rest a sure they did not doubt the enemy had submarines lurking below either and the escorting ships were watching for that to as they steamed onwards to the West Islands to link up with their Anagonian counterparts.

Soon the fighting would begin. But rest a sure Fighter4u wasn't missing the chance to snoop around either if you know what I mean?

West Island Command

The entire command was shut down. Electronics, information, military facts, and anything else that could be used against the United Republic and her offensive and defensive capabilities were erased with either magnet's for the hard drives or other specific techniques. Commander's of Forces, including Admirals and Generals, garnered their staff and headed for the tunnels. Some would stay for the resistance and to secure the underground tunnel that linked West Island and Mainland Anagonia, others would use the extensive Underground Network to begin Guerrilla Tactics against enemy forces and make it hell for them to remain on the island.

"In the course of history it is important to note that empires must rise and they must eventually fall. It is through this destruction and rebirth that the greatest of these Empires grows immortal."

General Tuloth Cobra, Grand Army of the United Republic, 1945 After Unification

Throughout history, Empires across the known world rose to glory and fell in devastating defeat. Sometimes these empires experienced a golden age, ending with a silent whimper upon the world stage. The Grand Library of the Republic kept these ancient tales sacred for the People to view and students to study for all time. Such tales were on the mind of those in Command of Anagonia's Military. They were taught both ancient and modern tactics of warfare, experienced in the history that brought the birth of the United Republic two-thousand and nine years ago. They knew that eventually the same cycle of destruction and rebirth would happen to Anagonia, that it was inevitable and unavoidable. How that would happen, however, was totally up to the abilities of the soldiers and commanders in that place and time.

Colonel Kaloth Cobra, grandson to the famous Tuloth Cobra, had been stationed in West Islands a few years back. His experience in warfare spanned his entire lifetime in the military. Going back forty years now from foreign campaigns to internal skirmishes, Kaloth kept in mind his Grandfather's wisdom of battle and the many stories he told of his vast experience in the Military. One such story told to Kaloth from his grandfather involved Tuloth in a foreign land, back during the Global War of 1944 AU. It involved how major forces were defeated, and how a few thousand men and equipment repelled an invader ten times their size. This story was on the mind of Kaloth as he stood between the underground intersection between the Mainland Tunnel and the underground Island Network.

The light from the tunnel was provided by overhead systems powered by Island generators that remained active. Everything could be seen clearly, including the movement of around five-hundred soldiers and mechanized equipment heading towards the Island Network. Beside him General Alexes Trin stood her ground with her forces to defend the Mainland entrance. Both Alexes and Kaloth had been discussing the battle plan, and any reserve plan should the tunnels be invaded. A minor force from the West Island contingent had been dispatched towards the Airfield Alpha to provide evacuation for the Waldenburg troops, and to lead them to the hidden network where they could provide the most benefit.

The time came where he said his last farewell to Alexes, she merely giving a small salute before retreating to her Command Post. The plan had been decided that if the Mainland Tunnel was in danger, it would be detonated with high-powered explosives literally cutting off any potential escape and supply routes. Kaloth didn't enjoy admitting this path was the better of the choices they discussed, but it was the only choice currently available to him. He ran to catch up with the Island Defense Forces that were to engage the enemy in Guerrilla Warfare, taking their time to reach the extensive network inland to properly meet up with additional forces that were stationed farther inland.

Airbase Alpha

Caster Oblivion stood opposite of Peter von Waldenburg, jolting slightly each time an explosion occurred. His expressions didn't change much. After loosing his closest Comrade in a terrorist attack and having to witness his nation come under hostile invasion, nothing much phased him anymore. The soldiers defending him were less composed, worried for their Chief Commander as the two leader's discussed the events transpiring and alternative solutions. Caster grinning at Peter's suggestion of moving elsewhere, he knowing exactly where to go by now.

"I'll have your men currently deployed come with our forces to the underground network," Caster replied after another explosion rippled the airfield, "I already gave Guerrilla Tactics orders to the forces staying behind, so your additions will help." Concerning the other part of the question, "I believe the remainder of your forces will do good landing in Mainland Anagonia, near Rudavia and New Moscow in the Nodea Rudav Province." Finally, he nodded in respect with a large smile, extending his gloved hand in return to shake. By now, he was in full military attire with the exclusion of the normal backpack. No helmet, as he preferred not until major fighting occurred. "I am honored to meet you as well, and am glad the time has came to when our two Nations can finally work together." He chuckled, beginning the shake. "As foolish as it sounds, I plan on staying behind here until all hope is lost." He shrugged, "Giving the enemy hell is my job now."

Finishing the shake, he gave a quizzical look. "One last thing. Leistungi Forces are assisting Anagonia, and they'll primarily be in Union City and the Anagonian Province area." He lifted one eyebrow, "I don't know the relation between your two countries, but until I am satisfied that you can work together I suggest listening to Satellite communications as they'll be relaying the Leistung Force locations."

The Prince’s face erupted in a burst of passion at the mention of the Leistungi and his lips began to twitch, “Damn, sinning, whores of dogs!” He bellowed over the roar of another impacting missile. “May they be broken in the same puss filled den of depravity in which their fetid carcasses were conceived.” He paused for a moment and his face wrapped into a slight smile, “not really. It was all a misunderstanding last time. They are right to be angry and we’ll keep our distance just as you say.”

A few strormtroopers began to gather around the officers; they were an entirely imposing sight, grey coated and slinging shotguns from their shoulders as if they were toys. “We’ll see it doesn’t come to that. If it does though, and I am no one to tell you your business, Anagonia doesn’t need another martyr right now. It already has one. What your people will need is a steady hand and so far yours seems ideal.” Peter broke away from the man’s hand and snapped something back to General Gröning who in turn responded in the Waldenburger tongue. “Most of our armor is lost anyway apparently. Lead on and I’ll follow sir. Our communications plane unfortunately has been damaged and we will be needing access to your communications centers to reorganize our defense and move our next wave to the island areas.” Peter checked the chamber of his pistol and flipped it back with a loving hand, “If I may ask; how long do we have? On this island I mean?”

Caster gave a weak smile, looking down as Peter gave the comment about the Martyr. He thought back about Johnny, realizing Peter's word were quite true. He came back as an Anagonian Marine patted him hard on the shoulder, he gazing quickly back at Peter and recalling everything spoken to him. He watched as Peter and the other individual spoke, not really concentrating by this point. He tried to keep it away, the memories. Something about what Peter had said brought emotions up that wanted to pour out like an ocean held back too long.

Again another hard pat on his shoulder, the Marine none other than his closest compatriot at this point. Colonel Hampfrey stared intensely at Caster, "Are you alright, sir?" Caster stared back, not answering for a few moments, then shook his head and nodded. "Yea," he said while giving a fake smile, "Yea I'm fine. Go get the Troopers ready to depart." Hampfrey nodded as Caster looked back at Peter, nodding towards his last question. "We'll be moving out as soon as your ready, Peter von Waldenburg." He holstered his weapon finally, "I'd like to get the show on the road."

6:02 PM, Union International Airport
Union City, Anagonia

The squeak and hiss of rubber hitting asphalt had been a constant at Union International Airport that evening, as strategic air lifters of the Leistungi Air Force touched down in rapid succession, ferrying their valuable human cargo to the beleaguered nation. Generalmajor Fuchs, the commanding officer for the combined Leistungi expeditionary force, had debarked several hours prior, and though the change in flight destination from Drezna to Union City had worried some in the General Staff, Fuchs was unphased. He leaned over a makeshift wooden card table which had been cleared of its standard array of playing cards and chips, replaced by field maps and a mug of strong field-brewed coffee.

Fuchs’ staff stood around him, arguing amongst themselves about mundane details of the defense plan while Fuch plotted the greater battle in silence. “Gentlemen,” he said, tearing his gaze from the dirtied map to face his staff. “Our forces will cease deployment in approximately three hours. At that time—” The roar from the engines of a Leistungi F/A-38B (http://z11.invisionfree.com/Sequoia_Defence/index.php?showtopic=22&st=0) as it touched down vertically several meters away cut the Generalmajor off mid-sentence, and he waited patiently for the pilot to power down the VTOL plane’s engines before continuing.

Fuchs flicked his eyes upward in annoyance and continued. “At that time, our forces will move out via these roads,” he said, pointed at a number of highlighted black lines leading away from the airport. “From which they will be in a prime position to counterattack against Reich advances towards Union City or the surrounding area. We’ve been given essentially free reign in our defense of the city, which I fully intend to take advantage of—flexibility is the key here, and if The People’s Freedom lands forces, it will be because the Anagonian navy has been routed. Therefore, we can expect a lack of major Anagonian naval support. Questions?”

The group was silent, and Fuchs nodded, straightening out his grey-black officer’s peacoat. “Then prepare your men for departure on my orders. Tank regiments will be held in reserve until enemy forces land.”

Camp Patrick

It had now been a full week since the successful invasion of the island. Troops had been landing consistently for the past few days, and the area around the initial beachheads were sprawling with military tens and pre-fabricated building as the military machine brought tens of thousands of men on shore. The commanders on the ground knew the battle for the island was not quite over yet, and the fortified positions and trenches surrounding the camps proved as much. In the jungle, several hills had been cleared of vegetation and firebases had been established on them, fortified positions with supporting artillery and airstrips. The air force had also arrived now, and several airfields now house the warplanes. It still be a few weeks yet before adequate supplies had been stored and airfields built to allow for an invasion of the mainland.

Furst and his ground commanders knew from radio signals and documents left behind that the enemy had not fully evacuated the island and many forces remained, but the enemy had done a good job destroying the records of tunnel or base locations. As such, patrols were now being sent daily into the jungle, in order to establish contact with the enemy. The commanders did not want to root out every single enemy soldier, which could take years and cost thousands of lives, but the enemies would need to be occupied by the patrols and such while the supplies for the mainland invasion were being stockpiled. No doubt this would be the most annoying and frustrating phase of the war as in such conditions the full might of the Prussian military machine could not be brought to bear, especially its excellent armored and mechanized formations. This task would rely on the foot infantrymen and helicopters to root out the enemy in a deadly game of hide and go seek.

First Sergeant Andrew Koch was a twenty year veteran of the Prussian Army. Koch had seen the Molkte era, the fall of Molkte, the reformation of the military, and he had participated in the North Calveras and Nova Europan wars, the latter of which was quite difficult and long. Now, he was grunting under the weight of his pack through a patrol in the jungle. The tropical heat got to you in the first few minutes, the green and tan uniforms that they had been issued were already becoming gray and white from the salty sweat. Mosquitoes and other insects descended upon the men like a ferocious wave, the repellent they had been issued was useless, Koch noted but it was much too hot to keep the long sleeves now. Commanders had quickly learned that a patrol could only go around two kilometers a day, especially in hilly terrain.

The sun was setting when Koch learned from the company commander, Captain Frist, that the company would be staying overnight. While annoyed, Koch set about preparing the shifts for night watch and establishing a defense in the unforgiving jungle. How anybody could live in such conditions was beyond him. Cursing, he slapped away yet another monstrous mosquito and he soon lit a cigarette, a Bon Temp for Yanitara. He could only hope no enemy contact would made tonight, as he took off is BALCOTH helmet and snuggled against a twisted tree for sleep.

Jungle Warfare

Colonel Kaloth Cobra had taken with him twenty men who would act as the forward observers to properly calculate and plan attacks for the mechanized assets so losses would be minimal. The Jungle was indeed harsh, but being stationed here for so long and training on this very island permitted Kaloth and the rest of his men an uncanny experience and immunity to natures effects. The occasional bug bite would occur, but there was no recorded poisonous insects or snakes that lived here to worry about. They traveled South West from the exit of an infantry bunker hidden between two dense and wide tree's. Thanks to the bushes in front of the entrance, the tree's looked nothing more than natures handiwork at display.

He carried with him a M82A1A .50 Caliber Special Application Scoped Rifle with modified Schmidt & Bender 3–12×50 Police Marksman II LP rifle scope with illuminated reticle with SPA-Defense B634 34mm Male Dovetail capable of attaching a Simrad KN200 Night Vision Weapon Sight for night operations, and he planned on using this to his full advantage. Other members of his squad carried M4/M4A1 5.56-mm Carbine's, two with M249 SAW Light Machine Gun's, and three carrying AK-74 5.45 mm Assault Rifle and acting as anti-tank infantry with their M136 AT-4's. The rest varying from M16A2 5.56-mm Semiautomatic Rifle's to 12-gauge Shotgun's with primary weapon being the M40A1 Sniper Rifle. They were all well prepared to engage the enemy, and if spotted to make a hasty retreat and inflict major casualties.

They were mostly crouched for the painfully slow trek, carefully examining their surroundings. They had on full Forest Battle Dress Uniform's with forested camouflage face-paint, carrying on their backs CPST-45 Combat Packs (http://hawk.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=Military&action=display&thread=86&page=1#363). They were equipped with TCVA-21 Trooper Combat Visual Aid System's (http://hawk.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=Military&action=display&thread=86&page=1#362[/url), helmet mounted and wire-based, which was supplied by a power source in the Combat Pack. The system assisted in Night Vision, which wasn't that far off considering the look of the day, and therefore they took their time. Each one knowing the proper escape route, and each one understanding that if spotted they were to first loose the enemy before they were to escape to these passages.

Kaloth silently ordered his men to lower themselves with a closed fist, the signal going across the local network provided by the TCVA-21 systems. All twenty complied, Kaloth leaning forward and carefully positioning his sniper rifle as he viewed through the scope with the one eye not gazing through the TCVA-21's LCD system. He observed around fifty soldiers obviously not of Anagonian origin. No patrols were issued but Kaloth's in this vicinity. He remained in that fixed position, observing the enemy as a few snipers in his squad came forward to report more sightings. They positioned themselves there for over thirty minutes, eventually finding two-hundred soldiers spread out all across the area. It would be a hard deal to properly attack the enemy in this position. With no Air Superiority and no Air Cover to speak of, everyone on the ground was on their own.

Kaloth thought of the options for a moment, sitting forward of his squad as they slowly spread out due to an unspoken command sent over the network. Once the attack began, there was no doubt in the Colonel's mind that the enemy would call in air support. This would prove a serious problem to a hard strike against the forces. Kaloth easily maintained his position for over an hour, just observing and thinking of his options as night finally came over the Island. Finally he issued one of his squad as a runner to go back to Headquarters and inform them of spotted positions, as Kaloth believed firmly that Anagonian communications were being monitored and any attempt to send any outbound signals towards satellites would be intercepted. The nineteen that remained followed Kaloth's lead as he moved slowly forward, getting between a fallen log and positioning his rifle above it while hiding behind the cover. He began to pick targets as the rest of the snipers did the same, finding cover behind large rocks and beside dense tree's. Some even climbing a tree, ever so slowly, to cover and aiming their weapons.

The two soldiers with the SAW's were told to fall back as the weapons would easily give away their position, Kaloth intending to use them when the confusion of the firefight ensued. His snipers, by now, were spread evenly a part about a half a mile at various distances, remaining a good half a mile from the enemy company. The rest of the soldiers with assault weapons were also informed to fall back through unspoken signals, specifically informed in coded link to maintain a distance until a certain signal was given. Finally, the moment came, a green signal being given, and Kaloth and the other snipers, about seven with the shotgun's in tow, already having the heads of their enemies in the cross hairs. They began pulling off shots, as quickly as possible, smoothly and calmly going from one soldier to the next as the regular infantry waited for the signal.

The Impossible Task (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sVoRlTQIDnw&feature=channel_page)

"For too long have we stood by and allowed ourselves the ability to think of our Great Nation as invincible. To continue this belief will only doom us in the end. We must remember that despite our courage, our valor, and our outstanding capabilities as a United Nation, that we are are far from invincible."

Chief Admiral Vladimir Vladinchi, Speaking to the Assembly of the Joint Chief's of Staff, December 23rd, 1965 After Unification

The waves of the Ocean crashed heavily on the hull of the XCV-1 Anagonia. A relentless storm the previous night had spelled doom for a preemptive attack on the TPF fleet, leaving Chief General Oscar Vladinchi with the only choice of waiting a day longer before he could get his fleet into action. Before the storm broke, he had ordered all fleets to combine into a massive Armada Force. This would give him a slight advantage in a tactical sense, leaving him to deal with one large group instead of four. The combined firepower would also be concentrated, assisting both defensive and offensive capabilities of the ships. Earlier in the morning he had received coded word that Vladimir Kerov's fleet had done much the same.

The situation currently was that Oscar's Armada was coming westward from the Northern Wastes, skimming the beaches there before slowly branching off to come around West Island and meet the enemy Armada head on. At the same time, Vladimir's fleet would be arriving north-eastward from the Anagonia Ocean skimming the South Land beaches before branching off to do a direct assault on the enemy fleet's rear position. Just as the two fleet's were to engage the enemy fleet, the remainder of the Anagonian Defensive Fleet numbering with some thirty aircraft carriers and numerous other ships would after forming proper assault the enemy coming from a north-westward direction from the Sea of Independence. The Fighterian fleet, false-flagging as an Anagonian fleet, would hopefully join them as Oscar's fleet passed Avesa Harbor.

This three-pronged assault on the enemy would hopefully confuse and disorient the enemy long enough to launch critical strategic strikes against the enemy aircraft carriers. Hopefully by the end of the assault, Anagonia would have enough ships remaining to form a final defense for the Motherland.

Looking out from the bridge of the Anagonia, Oscar Vladinchi understood very well that there was no logical back-up if things went horribly wrong. The best they could do was reform the remainder of the Anagonian Defense Fleet to pitch a last-ditch offensive against the enemy fleet to halt their progress. If they failed to contain the threat, this would be of no use either way and the worst possible case of a Mainland Invasion would be inevitable. West Island had already fallen to the enemy advance. Oscar was determined to ensure that the West Islands would be all the enemy achieved in this war for Anagonia, and that there he would contain them. Even if it meant sacrificing his own life, they must fall here and now.

He briefly sighed, lighting one of Anagonia's famous cigar's and inhaling deeply. The ocean breeze was cool, refreshing him. He could feel the water in the wind as it was gently blown across his face. He never did blink, his eye's fixed towards the rising view of West Islands and Mainland Anagonia in the distance. He exhaled slowly, clenching his teeth firmly. One more day, perhaps even half that, and the Naval Battle that would determine the fate of the United Republic would begin.

Fourth Armada

As always, the cool ocean breeze was a refresher to Furst after being cooped up in the bridge for hours on end. He wasn't too stressed overall, the battle had been a resounding victory and the supplies were being multiplied daily. Still, it felt good to be out near the water again, where he belonged. His grandfather and father were fishermen, and had both served in the navy. None of them had become the rank Furst had, but his father was incredibly proud. Furst's soon would follow the family tradition as well, he was currently in the academy. Standing up straighter, he took a deep breath before preparing to head back into the bridge. But he was soon interrupted.

" Sir! Satellite and radar confirms that the enemy fleet has been spotted! They are incoming!" Said a young, eager ensign. Furst merely sighed as he headed past the young sailor into the bridge. So the enemy had finally decided to show themselves, he thought. Now, he would have to kill many people to defeat them- it would have been better for them to continue to hide in the great expanse of the oceans. His commanders now had the added advantage of land-based planes to aid in the attack, most notable of which was the ASF-90 fighters and the MB-50 Maritime Strike Bombers of Questerian design. Now, Furst's adjutants were very busy working t organize the aerial attack on the enemy. The biggest issue was the coordination of all the aircraft which would soon be in the air, soon airspace would run out so altitudes had too be assigned as well as take-off orders among other things.

The attack would be a varying one. The initial wave would consist of well over five hundred aircraft, which would attack at the same time, from differing directions and altitudes. The first attack would come from a group of around seventy NS-20 bombers and their accompanying ASF-40 fighters, they would sea-skim at maximum allowable speed, and unleash their munitions well below radar level. Dozens of MB-50 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=548087) bombers would then launche their AS.58 missiles at the enemy AA defenses, prior to this, at medium altitude, another wave of NS-20's and their escorts would strike with MLSS-21's against the enemy AA to weaken it, meanwhile the airspace would be so saturated with electronic warfare to make the enemy very disorientated. Over 2,000 missiles of varying types and capability would be launched at varying altitudes and times within seconds of each other. The enemy would have a near-impossible time of choosing which threats were most important, and at least some of the strike was guaranteed to get through the defenses and sink the enemy. Multiple waves would follow after that. Furst grunted, he hoped that this wave would work with the minimalist of casualties.

As the bomber accelerated over the cold water, Lieutenant Davis struggled to stop his shaking and rising anticipation. His squadron, the Sons of Neptune, as they were aptly nicknamed, had been one the squadrons assigned to attacking the enemy AA defenses in a daring, sea-skimming attack. The slightest error, Davis knew, could send his bomber into the water, shredding it and killing him instantly. It was a fate he wanted desperately to avoid. The high performance needed for the mission was gulping his fuel supply, and even though it was in little danger of running out, it kept him preoccupied. Sooner then he would of liked, he heard his squadron commander's voice on the radio. " Alright, boys, this is it. We will be in striking range in a manner of minutes. This is the time that the enemy has the greatest chance of detecting us. If you come under fire, do not maneuver or pull up, you will either crash into the sea or risk your wingmate's positions. I have the greatest confidence in all of you. Good luck. The shaking only increased now, as Davis' vision got increasingly narrower as he watched the GPS inch closer and closer to the weapons fire point. He prayed hard to God that the enemy would not see them now.

Jungle

Blood and brain matter exploded from a young infantryman's head as a sniper bullet penetrated his helmet, killing him instantly. It was this, and the sounds of gunfire, that awoke Koch with a start. Instantly, he threw himself to the ground, making himself a small a target as possible. The radio net was going crazy as men screamed for help, and NCO's yelled for the comms to remain clear, but chaos was reigning. Koch sprang into action as he yelled over the gunfire for men to take cover and lay down suppressive fire towards the enemy. The squad and platoon marksmen were already working to provide countersniper fire, they were already placing highly-accurate shots near the enemies suspected positions. Now, on the radio to Battalion he heard the captains voice screaming for artillery support from the nearby firebase. Smoke grenades were thrown in front of friendly positions, and not soon after heavy fire from 155's began to rain down on the enemy. Medics rushed to help wounded soldiers.

The captain pulled Koch aside. " Listen, I need you to lead a squad and attempt a wide left flank of the suspected enemy position. I have another squad going to the right. I doubt this artillery barrage will actually kill them, we need to make sure they are dead." Koch nodded, and ran to the position of the squad. AGL's and machine guns fire from the company positions as they attempted to keep the hostiles down. The squad moved fast as possible without risking ambush, the pointman nearly tripped several times. The artillery barrage stopped, and Koch and his men prepared to look for enemy muzzle flashes or hear enemy voices so they could flank. Sweat and adrenaline crushed through their veins, and each man struggled to keep their breathing under control. Their senses were at a heighten, almost superhuman state, their eyes struggled to see and their hears to hear, and their mouths even tried to taste the enemy. The senses tried to feel them. But they could only wait, worried that they could die at any second.
Lyras
06-01-2009, 05:33
There were occasions when Lyras hesitated in the advocacy of military force. When real thoughts concerning the morality or otherwise of intervention in any given situation were aired. When prudent caution warred with the ever-present Lyran cultural urge to engage in honourable battle.

This was not one of them.

The Holy Reich was, quite simply, trusted to act according to honour. That they chose to advance upon the United Republic was unexpected, but their request for Lyran assistance was recieved, and honour demanded acquiescence. To presume dishonour on the part of their allies was all but unthinkable, and, despite not being entirely familiar with the situation, the Protectorate would act according to its word.

It was with that in mind that Warmarshal Leon Krell summoned Order-Marshal Lambert, Marshal of the 7th Order, to his office for a final briefing before the 7th Order sailed for Anagonian waters.

Right on time, as was his norm, Lambert arrived at the Warmarshal's office, and knocked once.

"Come in".

"Reporting as ordered, sir."

"Excellent. You will excuse me if I neglect to offer you a chair. I know you are busy, and we have already covered most of what we need to in earlier briefings. I just wanted to hear your final thoughts, and make some last pointers myself. Excuse me f I sound like I am flogging a dead horse. I want to make 100% certain that you know what my intent is for your operation."

Lambert nodded. He had expected as much. Warmarshal Krell wasn't much for pleasantries. His daughter was very different, but he had never made the mistake of confusing the two Krells.

"You are to utilise all means at your disposal, within your conscience and with regards to personal and national honour, to fulfil the objectives laid out for you by the theatre commander Furst. He has my complete confidence, in his capacity as the nominated representative and senior Prussian field commander."

Lambert said nothing. This was not news. He suspected the Warmarshal was just, as the man had indicated, being thorough. Words would be wasted.

"You have, under your command, forces normally assigned to the 7th Order, along with additional naval resources that have been specifically attached for the purpose of this operation. They are as detailed here."

The Warmarshal passed a piece of paper to his subordinate. Lambert picked it up and scanned it briefly.

[b]Naval Elements, Combatant vessels:

Battlegroup Lambert

23 Longsword-class supercapitals
120 Battleaxe-class cruisers
890 Hatchet-class modular frigates (multiple variants)

“There are 8 more Longswords than I remember from the last brief, sir.”

Krell gave a thin smile.

“Compliments of High Marshal Atherton.”

Lambert nodded approvingly. He made a mental note to send Cassandra Atherton a couple of bottles of Yanitarian wine. She did like a decent sparkling white... and he liked a decent amount of naval fire support.

“Very good then, sir.”

Krell nodded himself. Lambert was one the best. He'd do well.

“Then go do us proud.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week and a half later, Battlegroup Lambert was just shy of 3000km west of Anagonia's West Islands. The fleet would move south, then approach the Anagonian mainland from the west. Hostile forces would be engaged, but the non-Anagonian parties, and to a lesser-extent, Anagonia, were not held in any way lower in Lyran esteem. That was not the Lyran way, nor the way of warriors. Lyras would fight, but, so long as the opposition's conduct remained honourable, there would be no souring of relations, nor long-term ramifications. This was a strange quirk of Lyran culture, but one they didn't expect others to share.
“Bring the fleet to full readiness, and notify all elements that we are now within the area of operations.”
Flag of the United Republic of Anagonia
Declaration of Peace and Neutrality
TO: All Nations Involved
FROM: Caster Oblivion - Acting Chief Governor
I before my fellow brothers and sisters of the world today to inform you of a decision I have reached concerning the fate of the United Republic and her involvement in the Global War. I understand that Johnny, while the true Chief Governor and probably having more sense than me, would have never undertaken such a diplomatic proposition as I did, one must understand that first I am The Peoples Leader, and Second a Warrior. Perhaps it is this inexperience as a true Warrior of Anagonia that led me to the conclusion that millions upon millions of my Peoples death's would seem quite useless as the invasion fleets neared. Maybe a few Leaders would have concluded death before submission, preferring the afterlife and her bounties over the living and those that need protection.
Unfortunately, not me.
I have served for decades as the Chief of Foreign Affairs and Activities under countless Chief Governor's, doing my job as best as possible. Never once was the position placed upon me where my decisions directly effected the outcome of my Homeland's fate upon this earth. It was like a horrible wake-up call for me when the time came to step into these impossible shoes of leadership and take charge, many of you now knowing the Terrorist Attacks that claimed Johnny Standford's life. I was ill-prepared then for the task. Yet, looking at it now, I don't think I can honestly say I have failed my people in any respects.
Last night, before the invasion of Mainland Anagonia and before I dared send more of Anagonia's bravest warriors to their deaths, I met with representatives from the Protectorate of Lyras and the Reich of The Peoples Freedom. Together we discussed in diplomatic terms the objective of the war at hand against Anagonia and the ultimate desire for the outcome of said war. Face with impossible odds, even with the assistance of the most worthy allies ever to come to the United Republic's aid, I found no reasonable alternative. I was forced to conclude the magnitude of the situation and held an emergency meeting with a representative from the Communist Federation of Stoklomolvi. Together we jointly agreed on a few things, but one thing in particular. Millions of innocents would undoubtedly die in the name of defending our protection of Stoklomolvi, and that was something we universally did not want.
After a short discussion, I formally declared proposed a Peace Accord that was further ratified by all parties invading the United Republic. The basic's of the Accord are as follows:
A) Cessation of current hostilies and re-establishment of normal peacetime relations between all parties.
B) Cessation of all Anagonian support for communist forces, in all theatres. Time is granted to the United Republic to withdraw in good order.
C) West Island shall remain sovereign to the United Republic, and is granted to the Reich as unrestricted leasehold.
D) Lyran and Anagonian militaries agree to establish military facilities on each others soil, under unrestricted leasehold, the details of which can be established at a later date.
A small victory was gained when Anagonia was permitted to continue normal operations in the nation of Fictions, the origin of the cowardly terrorist attack that took our previous Chief Governor's life. This was held true only if Anagonian assets did not assist Communist agenda's in any manner, and therefore as of this morning I am fully enacting this Peace Accord. All Anagonian Assets in Stoklomolvi are being pulled back to the Homeland, as with all Forces in theatres assisting the Communist Agenda around the globe. It is an unfortunate act that I must oblige by, either forced or pressed, and therefore will not break for the sake of what honor Anagonia remains to have on the World Stage.
I firmly believe this outcome was the best to result from the Invasion, and the war in general. While I would like to have seen Anagonia follow triumphantly alongside our dear Allies in the Stoklomolvi Coalition, I cannot willingly state that this following could be undertaken with the loss of millions of civilian innocents. It is with this knowledge that I accepted this Peace Accord, and with this knowledge that I believe I made the right decision. My deepest apologies go out to all our allies whom need our assistance currently, but I must state again that Anagonia shall honor this Peace Accord to the letter and back down from the Global War into neutrality.
With Deepest Respects to all whom stood beside us in our time of need,
Caster Oblivion
Acting Chief Governor of the United Republic of Anagonia
Defeat with Paradise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOSooQaxv2A&feature=channel)
The Naval Armada's headed home.
Never to engage the enemy, never to defend their homeland. Sailor's and Marines with faces as bleak as the abyss pondered about their nations future. They still had their families, their land, and their homes. They lacked that inevitable gift that granted them the status of Warrior, the death they so deserved and the right they so wanted. The ocean never looked so clear to them, the skies never brighter. Yet this did not cheer them with good spirits. Dolphins played at the bow of their mighty warships. Whales leaped from the waters miles a part in an awesome spectacle. This, too, did not cheer them. Nothing would after hearing the news of the surrender. Nothing ever would.
The once Mighty Armies of the United Republic headed home.
Behind them they left families and memories in Stoklomolvi. They left without saying a word after their farewells and goodbye's, too ashamed for any conversation. People were left to wonder of their fates without their Brethren, and their Brethren left to wonder what dignity they had remaining. They cried together on transports back to the Homeland, and shared memories of families and kid's left back. They would eventually all arrive, each and every one of them. The Nation they called home would look much different than when they departed.
As the Soldiers were offloaded from ships or aircraft, they were greeted by crowds of thousands of citizens. Each one, despite the news of the Peace Accord, clapped. They clapped, they cheered, and they celebrated their loved ones return. To those that never returned in physical form, they mourned and blessed their passing. This was a sight that did cheer them up. This was a spectacle of appreciation and support that would turn their moods around. This was Anagonia. At peace, Home, with everyone welcoming their return.
They saw no protests. They saw no sides to the issues. They witnessed no acts of violence or malice. The soldiers simply walked through terminals and off docks to have the People wave and cheer for them. It was like a National Holiday gone right. No disorder, no over-emotion, just simple honest-to-god praise for the Hero's of a Nation. They did their best even under the harshest of circumstances. They acted bravely in the face of certain doom. They were willing to die to save the People they so loved and protected. This was enough, more than enough, to warrant nearly every capable Citizen to come out and welcome home those they believed would never return.
To the soldiers whose mission it was to serve the People and the Country, it was a surrender to impossible circumstances. To the People who looked to those soldiers for protection and capability in the harshest of times, it was a blessing in disguise. Families welcomed home sons and daughters, fathers and mothers. They welcomed home uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews. They welcomed home friends and distant relatives. They embraced complete strangers and blessed them with every faith believed. But most importantly, they welcomed home Comrade Brethren. True Family. True Blood. One and the same.
The Death of a Hero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K2y3pu-2_4&feature=related)
Silence in the mid-day sun.
In the center of the Stadium, refitted for use as the observance, was placed the empty casket used to symbolize and remember the deceased Chief Governor. Silence, overwhelming and consuming. Sob's could be heard all around, either from children who admired the Leader so greatly or individuals whose hopes and desires died with the man. Shattered dreams of a society free from terrorism gone in an instant. The first time in decades, perhaps centuries, that an attack of this emotional and mental magnitude had ever hit their home soil. A tall flagpole helped wave in the strong wind the Flag of the United Republic, below it the Flag of the Office of the Chief Governor. Everyone's gaze, however, was directed at the center where the casket was positioned.
It was seven feet long, ebony black in the color of Drekamythian Royalty. Johnny Standford's picture; his hair combed back perfectly, his eyes fixed forward, his smile radiant with hope, and his face cleanly shaven. It was positioned at the back of the Casket, the large screen at the top of the stadium displaying the picture for all to see whom didn't have the view. A podium was placed before the casket for those whom were to speak, empty currently as around the raised platform seats across the field continued to the stadium seats symbolizing the Unity of Family that Anagonia so held sacred. Everyone was the Chief Governor's Family, he had stated it himself in many speeches. This was an honor to his belief that the Nation latched onto for a precious memory of a time now passed.
Music played, the Stadium resounding with it. Soothing, yet encouraging tears. Tears so flowed forth from nearly everyone, those not shedding restraining themselves with whatever control they had left. Finally a respite came as an individual took to the podium, aged and well known as everyone stood. His eyes were red from shedding too many tears, perhaps a bad sign at his advanced age. He wore a General's outfit in full Military Dress. He held his head low as he managed to utter the words.
"It is a hard thing to loose a soldier," he said with a heavily influenced Russian accent of common english, "even harder to loose a leader." He raised his head, the large screen focused on his face. Grey hair, aged tanned skin, and eyes that burned with emotion. He gazed around the Stadium at all who attended, and all who couldn't attend at their homes. "Yet it is entirely a different thing to loose a Comrade Brethren." He nodded, restraining his tears. "Johnny Standford was my Comrade Brethren, OUR Comrade Brethren." He looked down at the podium, "And he died knowing he'd help forge Anagonia a better future." He coughed, swallowing back a sob, regaining some composure. "We must remember him as he lived for us, and not as he died for us. In death, there is no victory but the memory we give to it. In life, there is victory because we can achieve it."
The man gripped both sides of the podium, his hands straining with the pressure. His knees wanted to buckle under him, yet he stood strong. Everyone felt the same way, everyone wanted to give in to the defeat of the moment. Yet, like Oscar Vladinchi, they didn't. Oscar stood strong for them, and his memory of his son. Something he would hold dear to him for the rest of his life. Something he wished he could have told Johnny about before this fateful event happened. He gulped back another sob, then continued. "We must remember that we are a Nation of Believers and Dreamers, that even our dreams and beliefs become action and not inaction." He gazed with new hope in his expression around the Stadium, "That in all things we as a Nation were led to a better future thanks to the actions and sacrifices of Johnny Standford." He placed a shaking hand on his chest, "I for one am grateful for the chance to experience life through his eyes and see the wonderful simplicity of how he viewed the world and how it functioned."
He dropped his head, finally giving in to the emotion, shedding a few tears. Instantly men in both civilian and military uniforms came around him. They placed an arm around him or patted him on the side or back. He nodded a few times as they said things not heard. Then, gently, he backed them away. His expression was harder, less controlled than before. His voice broken, seeming to have shattered with the release of tears and sadness that occurred. He gazed around, looking sternly, then looking down as he suddenly slammed his hands against the podium. A few around him looked startled, yet he regained his composure instantly. He stood straight, formal, and finally addressed everyone with a partially unbroken speech.
"Finally," he said slowly, "We must not forget who he was and what he achieved. This would dishonor every memory we seek to cherish Johnny by." He nodded slowly, "We must endure this trying time without our Comrade Brethren. He is in a better place than us, a place that has achieved what every Chief Governor has sought to since the dawning of this Great Republic." He gave a slim smile, "He has achieved transcendence beyond this world filled with hate and violence. He is experiencing the fruits of community and brethrenhood. And we, left behind to guess at these miracles of the afterlife, must endure until we meet Johnny there on that fateful day and experience that Grand Unity with him."
The Stadium rose in clapping and cheers of approval, slightly diminished due to the mood of the moment. Many other people came to speak on that podium, but none having the impact that Oscar did. Some would wonder the true relationship between Oscar and Johnny, considering all possibilities imagined. Many would consider them true blood family, others possibly thinking them as master and apprentice. A few, a very special few, would see into Oscar Vladinchi's emotional speech and begin to believe that Johnny Standford was indeed the son of the great Chief General. The son that the nation never knew to be true, other than a legend among the greatest of stories.
