BREAKING NEWS: PM John Alden shot dead, Unknown Aunesian Seperatist group claims responsibility. More soon.
BRUXELLAN PRIME MINISTER SHOT DEAD
Sir John Alden has died in hospital following a shooting earlier this morning in the precincts of the Bruxellan Parliament.
Shots were reported at around 1015 BMT this morning as Mr Alden walked across the courtyard on his way to vote. Eyewitnesses have claimed two men had approached the PM, believed to have been accompanied only by parliamentary aides, before drawing weapons and opening fire.
One of the attackers then turned the gun on himself, whilst another was apprehended by security staff. Three men, believed to come from the Aunesian city of Strando, have since been arrested with claims that two of these men are serving members of the Royal Bruxellan Constabulary.
In a statement released earlier today on a number of seperatist terrorist websites, the previously unknown terrorist group AHF (Aunesian Heimatland Freihet) claimed responsibility, stating "We will not rest until the Aunesian people have their homeland returned to them".
Following the attacks earlier today, the Terrorist Threat Level was raised to 'Critical' with security enhanced at all major targets. The Speaker of Parliament has timetabled an emergency debate on the situation tomorrow morning, whilst the Commissioner of the Royal Bruxellan Constabulary is expected to hold a full press conference at 1845 BMT today to report on the progress of the criminal investigation.
King Edward X, in a statement released by the Palace announced that he was "deeply saddened and concerned at the events that took place earlier today. My thoughts and prayers, and those of my entire family, are with the wife and relatives of Sir John at this time."
He went on to state that "I am deeply concerned that this has been done in the name of the people of the Aunesian Isles. I would like to reassure Bruxellan Citizens everywhere that I know that the violence and warped ideology expressed today is in no way representative of my people, and I that I have not taken offense."
It is ANN's understanding that an emergency meeting of the Cabinet is now underway chaired by Edward Marsh, the Foreign Secretary, who has been appointed Interim Prime Minister.
More expected soon.
