On all comm frequencies throughout the galaxy came a voice-only message that cut through or overlaid any other transmission. The voice was of a male, clearly tense and worried, and in the background various ship-board alert noises could be heard.
To any and all that can hear this, my name is Doctor von Zlakrov and I seek political asylum away from the Pact of Iron. I am a senior scientist in the Special Projects Division and have many valuable secrets. Time is of the essence as I am being pursued by Pact of Iron military forces. I will be transmitting my location in code (cue short burst of static). Any who can decode this please come to my rescue at once, please!
Whilst the Pact of Iron tended to keep itself to itself, surely there would be many groups who would be interested in the chance of potential military gain. Was this an oppurtunity too great to miss?
OOC: Any nation should be able to decode the message, assuming you're clever enough :p Post ICly that you are jumping to the co-ordinates given and I'll describe what is at the location.

The first to receive it was the terrifying force known as The Eternal Swarm.
The Overmind received the message via it's Swarmling Satellites. It pondered the message for a few minutes, and being the clever entity that it was, managed to decode the message.
But, what to do?
It liked secrets. Currently it was hunting down The Black Library. it wasn't for sure what it was, but heard a snippet of conversation about it in a stray conversation. Apparently it held secret knowledge.
Perhaps this Von Zlakrov held Genetic Secrets, something to make the swarm, stronger.
"Attend to me my children, and save this Zlakrov thing from the doom it so greatly fears. After we have it's secrets, we can eat it, unless it proves interesting enough to be reborn into the swarm, or it's secrets prove valuable enough to let it live." The voice of the Overmind boomed throughout the swarm.
"I shall lead a portion of Hive Fleet Kraken Doctor Von Zlakrov's aid." Zasz said.
*********
An hour later, at the aforementioned coordinates, A rift to The Warp tore itself into existence, and deposited a single Hive ship, before closing.
"Greetings, I am Zasz, Cerebrate of The Eternal Swarm. I understand you need some assistance?" Zasz asked.

Even in the vast darkness of Space, the message somehow found its way to the PFS Ares, a Venator Class Star Destroyer in service with The Fallen.
They soon decoded the message, and soon the ship engaged its Warp-Drive and jumped.

HMS Warspite – Taycoon Asteroid Belt
The darkened room in the bowls of the Vanguard-Class battleship was lined with computer banks and shrouded equipment. Operators typed away at the interfaces while taking big gulps of coffee, shifting through transmissions snatched from the void by the Warspite’s powerful sensor modules. It was the Ship’s Electronic Warfare department and the pale operators were perhaps some of the best intelligencers in known worlds.
The watch commander, Lieutenant Mitchell, sat at the watch commander’s interface checking the reports churned out by powerful computer banks as they prioritised and if need be, decrypted the transmissions.
Something caught Mitchell’s attention, pulling it up on the main screen he started to shift through it. Although only partly decrypted, it looks like the computer’s AI ‘Lorna’ was using a brute force procedure on it, the salient details were already clear.
Reaching over to the handset mounted on the desk, he picked it up and punched in the code for the CIC, “CIC, this is Monitoring. We’ve got... what looks like an encrypted distress call, broadcast on all channels.”
Captain Kaunda grunted as he listened, clearing his throat, “Send it over the network, let me take a look... ok,” replacing the handset he called up the message on the CICs command table. He only read the first few lines before motioning for the XO, “Bill, bring us to action stations and ready a C-SAR mission.”
Bill Turner, the XO of Warspite grabbed the handset and switched it to the intercom, “Set Condition One throughout the ship. CAG to CIC, Major Norman to CIC.”
10 minutes later Warspite disappeared in a flash of light, reappearing at the last known coordinates.

Upon each ship jumping to the co-ordinates they would find a large and dense asteroid field in front of them. An automated message was broadcasting the following on a loop:
So, you made it this far. Good. Now in the middle of the field is a large asteroid upon which I established a temporary lab years ago - in the data files in the central computer are clues to my next location. You'll need either fighters or shuttles to navigate the field, don't bother trying to get a capital ship in.

The Unknown was drifting through Real Space just outside a moderately civilized system investigating the potential of an excursion inward. The feeble electromagnetic communications indicated it was hosting a society that was pre-space, easy pickings if they so wished it. The star was more to the Ta’Nar interest though. Unfortunately (though most certainly in the favor of the locals) the star was not a candidate for the super-heavy elements the wandering Ta’Nar were interested in.
As the crew of The Unknown were about to leave for the next target, the message broadcast by the scientist was received. As Shipmind easily translated the message, it also decoded the pulse burst and forwarded the whole thing to Command using the Kython Link. Moments later in Real Time, the Shipmind of The Zeus was delivering the message to Admiral D’Irk.
Admiral, what are your Orders?
Relay to the Shipmind of The Unknown to investigate the message. Be prepared for trickery and remain in contact.
Yes Sir.
Ten minutes later a wormhole opened in a deserted system 8 light years away. The Unknown emerged from the artificially torn rupture in the space-time continuum and faded into T-Space to complete its journey. After another few minutes, the Ta’Nar ship was peering down into Real Space through the dimensional veil to investigate the coordinates given in the transmission. It would not be a good idea to jump blindly into a trap.

Captain Kaunda scanned the new message as soon as it was send up from the monitoring room. Sneering and making a fist with his hand he punched the table, “This is a farce!” he hissed looking up at Commander Turner, “It’s either a wild goose chase or a trap...”
“Are we leaving Captain?” asked Turner.
“Yea... No,” he tapped his finger on the table, “Speak to the Commander Air Group, get him to liaise with Major Carlson... put together a boarding team. I want to go in strong, at least 2 squadrons of fighters and everything else we’ve got on the pad ready to go.”
“Right, sir,” replied Turner reaching for the intercom.
“This Doctor von Zlakrov fellow,” muttered Kaunda, “Have we signalled FLEET asking for his file yet?”
“Yes sir, but they’re still digging.”
“Humph,” spluttered Kaunda, “Get those squadrons in the air as soon as possible. Signal FLEET again and have them light a fire under it,” he started to move towards the CIC hatchway.
The message was picked up by a Auron Class orbiting Magni(see factbook). When the message was finished the message, and the code within, was forwarded to the Battlestar COS Terrania, which was the flagship of the Fleet. The code was quickly decoded and premission to jump to the location revealed by the code was received. 2 Battlestars, each with a crew of 8000, would go: the Endeavor and the Soloria. As they jumped into the system the Cammand Bridge went haywire as several small asteroids crashed into the side of the Endeavor. The asteroids were then blown to pieces by the ships Anti Missile cannons. Soon they picked up the second message and Falconite Fighters were sent into the asteroid field.

A swarm of Jets escorted Hive Tyrant Zasz to the Asteroid. Zasz carried a Prophet.
After reaching the large asteroid, the jets and Zasz forced their way into the Asteroid to look for clues. The Prophet prayed for Guidance, which gave it a temporary skills boost in using computers, and took to ransacking the software for clues, sending everything to The Overmind.
Zasz Meanwhile took the case off to literally look inside the computer for clues.

Captain, it appears there is another message directing us to go to some base in the middle of the asteroid field.
Can we pass through?
Not without impacting with a majority of debris.
Take us there using T-Space
Yes Sir.
The Unknown shifted locations and the 60 meter vessel arrived at the destination within several seconds.
Captain, I am detecting a void around the base. There are also what appear to be internal hangers.
Will the ship fit inside?
It appears to be too cluttered.
Then use the void, what is the window of opportunity?
We have about four minutes until debris would strike the ship.
That will be good enough. Take us to Real Space after plotting the position.
The Unknown faded into Real Space in the middle of the debris field. A single being left the ship, passing through the hull and into the base through the walls like it was a ghost. The Ta’Nar entered the base and looked at the walls, following the magnetic field created by the power conduits until it found a free computer terminal that was connected to the network. Using his CyberPsi, he merged his mind with the computer and began to rummage through the system going from one to another through the network searching for the man core. Once he found it, he looked for the files needed.

The Talon class battlecruiser Arji drifted silently thrugh the Foliolio nebula, it's hull poc-marked with many small, sparking holes.
Aboard the ships bridge the majority of the comand crew sat slumped in thier chairs snoring, taking a well deserved rest after taking on 2 Lycanpire hives and winning. The bridge was silent, without the snoring, untill a very load and irksom beeping sound erupted from somewhere near the view screen, jolting the tired crew out of thier slumber. After a few seconds the comms oficer said
"Incoming transition, quite encripted"
"Run encryption-busting programs, display the message on screen as it's decoded" the screen flickered into life and a calm voice spoke it's acknowledgement.
Several minuits later the message was completly deciphered and came up in Drag-hur on the screen while being spoken in galactic standard
"Get us to those co-ordinates, full transwarp!" the captain shouted "and send relay the translated message to fleet HQ, full security measures, and tell them we've gone to investigate."
"Yes sir" chorused the bridge crew
"Oh and have someone bring some coffe around here or put some stimulents in the air, something to keep us awake!"
the enginier smiled to himself as he complyed.

ooc: Unless it gets rid of the ridiculous 19.2 billion population and brings it to a sensable level (I'd say atmost a billion, all thoe really you shouldn't have that much yet either)
IC: A greeny-white flash heralded the arival of the Arji. The battlecruiser's shields were powered up as where it's weapons, afterall it was safe for them to assume that 'the pact of iron' could have deciphered the transmition aswell, and as the captain always said, better safe than sorry.
"Another transmition, putting it up now" the com officer said, still shaking as his body got used to the stimulents mixed with the air
So, you made it this far. Good. "It looks like he's right sir, the fields too dense and we're not alone here, weapons fire could cause trubble." the tacticle officer this time, he too was shaking slightly
"Dispatach scorpion attack groups 1 and 2, send 2 marine shuttles with them, Falme-tempest and silver-arrow compliment." the captain said in assertive tone.
About 5 minuits later it was done and 20 scorpion attack fighters screamed from the hangers on the ventral fin of the ship, 2 fairly small shuttles following them (I say small, considering they have some 20 burly, heavily armed troops between them) and began to weave thrugh the asteroids.

Sir, multiple contacts entering the system. Incoming bogies in seven minutes.
Any identities on the contacts yet?
Negative, they are unknown at this time.
Great, at least we will be gone before anyone gets here.
Another problem Sir.
What is it?
It seems our mass has attracted some of the debris. Our window was cut from four minutes down to two and a half.
Tell D’Mon his timeframe has changed.
Yes Sir.
Research Station:
D’Maon was carefully entering the main core when he noticed activity at one of the other terminals. He quickly traced their line of inquiry and set up several false files based on the search parameters they were using filled with random bits of data. He needed to buy himself some time to discover the file before anyone else did.
After that he started his own search. He first searched for Dr Zlakrov and then sent a subroutine to search for coordinates or any messages left. He also sorted by date paying close attention to the most recent entries being logically the ones left by the elusive scientist. After finding the information, he changed the date so it was a week older than it first seemed to be, that way he was not making it impossible to find the message, just harder.
As he was working, he received a message from The Unknown.
D’Mon, get your ass moving. The debris field cut your time by 90 seconds. If you don’t hurry, you will have to walk to a clear rendezvous area.
OK, I almost have it, I will return ASAP.
OOC:
Of course, my actions will only succeed if Skgorria allows. I did not want to make it impossible for others to participate so I just make it harder to locate the data to buy time.

The craft continued to scream towards the large asteroid, combining theier firepower to clear the larger chunks of rock. after about 2 minuits they reached the large asteroid and the attack groups began to swarm around the facility, the shuttles just kept going, shooting over the facilityand firing off opaqe white beams onto it, transporting the troops inside before they too began to circle the facility.
Inside the troops apeared with a white flash and the flame tempests imediatly fanned out to began accesing any terminals they found. Meanwhile the silver arrows began to advance thrugh the oridors, splinter rifles raised and personal shields powering up, they we're taking no chances. It was logical to assume that the other ships had deployed people to the station, and that they knew what was here. It was safe then, to assume that the the people who had, logily, been deployed would be protective of the prize if they had found it first.
Given the paranoia that most dragona troops feel the other people in the area would have to be careful if they didn't want incendiery shrapnel embeded in thier faces.
The flametempests we're quick to set up at 3 seperate terminals, keeping constent com links with each other to co-ordinate thier efforts and decrese the time they had to spend aboard the station. Frowning one of the tempests noticed several files being uploaded to the server and said into his intercom "FT alpha2 here, I'm getting some new data apearing in the system, running a data spike now to trace it, can anyone confirm it's not just me, search at the following controle route" he relayed the path he had taken to find the files and got confirmation that these files were newand sent the spike thrugh the system to find the terminal that was responsable

IC:
The swarm was as indirect, as they were direct. They copied every file in the system into The Hivemind without exception as the Overmind linked it's own expansive Conciousness with the system. There they could sift through the information and possibly find more than just the doctor.
"My children, while I look through our new information, go outside and entertain our guests." The Overmind ordered, looking through all the information copied into itself for directions as where to go, or what to do next.
Meanwhile, The Hive Ship unleashed the rest of it's Jets and erected it's own FTLi, The Shadow in The warp, which also disrupted communications and kept things in other dimensions and planes, in their dimensions and planes preventing crossing of dimensional boundries.
The Jets at the Asteroid joined Zasz outside, who had the body of a Hive Tyrant after the great swarm merge, and attacked anyone, and everyone nearby. Back at the Hive Ship, it opened fire on the closest ship, as the Jets swarmed about shooting at the closest competitors.

The attackships began to weave and bob around the tyranids as they closed in, one of them bursting into flame, as they unleashed vollys of blue energy.
Abord the arji's bridge the crew was franticly working trying to figure out why thier FTL cores had just shut down and moving to a better firing position on the tyranid hiveship that they had only just noticed on thier sensors and without question the captain shouted "FIRE ON THE BEASTS!!". Imediatly several of the smaller heavy guns opened fire, seconds later the 4 heavyest guns opened fire aswell, sending pure crimson bolts at the hive.
The Eternal Swarm
31-12-2008, 00:46
OOC: Note, I made changes, this isn't a classic Tyranid Hive, but it does share alot of similarities. For instance, I added Star Trek Tribbles to the swarm, for the breeding capabilities. Their still beatable, but to truly vanquish my swarm, you must destroy the Hive, or more will simply spawn. In this case, it would be the Hive Ship. Feel free to use this information ICly, but at least RP someone figuring it out.
IC: For each jet shot down, another took it's place, making trying to wade one's way through a Jet swarm an exercise in futility, unless you had an impressive array of weaponry.
As soon as enemy shields were down, Mycetic Hive Spores would be launched to board enemy ships.
As for the shots coming at the Hive ship, the smaller shots were blocked by the shields, a couple being taken by Jets instead, and the first of the four heavier cannons actually shattered the shield.
The Hive ship was moving, and dodged one shot, but the other two hit it, and hit it hard. approximately a quarter of the hive was destroyed, visibly bleeding into space. The regenerative capabilities took over, and the hive began healing itself.
OOC: Hive at 75%. But then, I'm attacking everyone nearby, not just Ih8uwannakillu.

OOC: I'm attacking everyone, including you, to cause trouble, distract everyone, and give myself a better chance to get to the scientist, as per Skgorria's wishes for us all to interact/shoot each other. Swarmlings aren't the interacting peacefully type, so that left me with one option.
Clicky the linky in my sig that says "The Eternal Swarm, an insider's Guide". You may use the info in my factbook ICly, providing you post a bit about getting it from the IGSC, either as a printed volume you purchased, or from one of your own scientists that are members of the IGSC.
Destroy the Hive ship, and the Swarmlings will all die instantaneously. But that won't mean I'm out. The Overmind itself is on the case, and can simply direct another ship to the next location.

The Unknown:
Sir, the organic vessels are attacking.
I see they appear to be upping the stakes. Deploy defensive measures.
Point defense systems activated. Incoming projectiles will be tracked. Energy weapons are active and able to lock onto projectiles.
Shipmind, you are clear to take action.
Thank you Captain
Sir, explosions are disturbing the debris. Tracking analysis is off. We cannot predict when anything will approach the base anymore.
Dell D’Mon to get his ass out of there in a hurry.
Yes Sir.
Inform him to plant a bug.
Yes Sir, Incoming fighters.
Release twenty Kythons.
The Research Station:
D’Mon was bust tracking the information and relaying the contents of the system through the Link to the Unknown’s Shipmind when he was interrupted.
D’Mon, get your ass moving. We are about to be under attack. Plant a bug and get out.
Right away, nearly have a copy completed. I am also detecting a presence going through the system with me. They are also copying the contents of the core.
Plant an Amnesia Bug in their download if you get a chance. When they access it there might be a chance they will forget some of the data.
Interesting, it appears a Class B mind is the destination of the download. I am covering traces of my presence and pulling out. Shipmind should be getting the last of it.
Shipmind confirms the completion of the download.
Give me a moment to plant the bugs and I will be out there in a flash.
D’Mon inserted the Amnesia bug into the download queue of the other and planted a data eating bug in the core within one of the older files left by the Doctor without changing the timestamp. He then withdrew from the mainframe, following a different path to arrive at a terminal near where The Unknown waited.
Space:
As the Jets tried to swarm toward The Unknown, a singular message went out to them using a telepathic tight beam so nobody but the Hive Ship should be able to receive.
Attention Swarm
This is the Ta’Nar frigate The Unknown. IF you continue to act aggressively toward us, we will be forced to take offensive actions against you and your ships. Thus far, the bulk of the station and the debris field have prevented you from directly attacking us but if your Jets approach, they will be summarily desiccated and dismantled. We will react to any further intrusion or act against us by massive retaliation.
Don’t make us regret saving your queen from destruction, it would not be healthy.
As the message was sent, ten of the twenty Kythons took position around The Unknown, ready to defend her. The other ten went forth to take position bear the hanger, waiting for any ships to exit so if they went to attack the Frigate, they would be caught between the two groups and be attacked from both directions.
The Research Station:
D’Mon reached the terminal closest to the hull, it was an information and communications station located near a storeroom for dry goods for the mess hall. Exiting the terminal, he moved toward the hull and looked around to see if the area was still deserted.
OOC:
You have not indicated if you are attacking be yet since I am away from the others and near the station. How far does your FTLi extend? I am assuming your Jets have not reached me yet if they are going to attack. The closest are in the station I believe.

3 silver arrows charged into the data core, rifles raized, no more than a minute after D'Mon had left "The cores clear, looks like some one was here, thermals are detecting footprints. Should we persue?" the lead asked as he checked down the rest of the coridor they had just been in
"No, return to the extraction point, transfer is almost complete." the silver arrows didn't waste time as the rest of the personel began to run back to the first terminal as a shuttle began to apraoch it, blasting 2 jets apart with a disintegrater cannon bwfore firing its beam again and pulling half of the team up with another white flash before imediatly setting off towards the Arji as 2 gunships emerged from the asteroid field to escort the shuttles back, thier quad laser turrets rotaing and unleashing vollys of fire.

"And why would we attack someone we like? You'll notice the swarm is staying away from your ship, and deliberately catching the stray shots headed your way. These lesser beings are unworthy of any secrets worth knowing that this creature might possess. Though I must admit, I forgot you were there when I reached out to stop the others from leaving. I will release you from the inhibition field." The Overmind said.
The Unknown would find itself summarily released from the field, almost as though a giant slimy tentacle had unwrapped itself from about the ship.
"Let our race be friendly, and non-hostile. Perhaps, we could even share the secrets. For instance, we would benefit greatly from any secrets related to Genetics this man creature might have, where as beings with no body would have no need of them, already possessing the perfection of mind. Likewise, we have no need of technology, but you who must rely on it, could benefit for more than we from the secrets of technology." The Overmind said again a moment later.
Meanwhile, the Overmind had finished with it's copying of the contents of the computer microseconds before the bug was released.
OOC: Well, in Canon, The Shadow in The warp extends for a great many light years, or so I've read, though they don't specify how far exactly. But then, their swarm is measured in the hundreds of billions too. So, lets say it extends for ten, but the range is subject to increase as my pop grows.
Don't forget, everybody but bal, I've got a nasty horde of swarms gunning for you. Destroy the Hive Ship, stop the attack, until the next point.
OOCly, I'm only aiming for a slight disabling that'll delay you for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. ICly, I'm trying to destroy you.

Space:
After a momentary pause, the reply returned over the telepathic link.
The Ta’Nar agrees.
No matter which of us two finds the prize, we will share. If we keep up the illusion of competition, it might cause the others to not band together against our efforts. We must keep the younger races at each other’s throats so they will hinder each other.
Do not worry about the Warp, it is quite familiar to us, just look upon our servants and you will see Chaos United in their forms. You can keep your inhibitors operational for they do not bind us in any way.
As soon as we collect our agent, we will leave to a safe location to check out the data we retrieved.
The Research Station:
D’Mon looked around but did not see any of the other intruders. The two files he planted should slow down any others following them, he hoped. D’Mon made one last search before stepping through the wall and made the short walk through void to reach The Unknown.
I am aboard, we can leave.
The Unknown:
Captain, D’Mon reports returning to the ship. We are ready to leave.
There was a loud crack and the ship shook.
What was that?
The debris from our gravity well and the fight are starting to reach the immediate area of the station. That was a small impact but regenerative systems are reporting only superficial hull damage. Systems will have it repaired within minutes.
Take us to T-Space and start working on that data. I want the next location ASAP.
The Unknown shimmered and faded away, Uplifting to T-Space where it remained while it went through the collected data.
OOC:
I am waiting for the details on the data. I have gone as far as I can.
