Maine Islands

Johnston, Maine Islands.
17th December 2008.
The Maine Buildings.

The first President of the Maine Islands, John Clarke, stood firmly and confidently, as he started shuffling through the papers which were gripped by his shovel-like hands tightly, as usual. He made a last minute check that his speech was in correct order, then started what would later be known as The Maine River Speech.

"My fellow Maine Islanders," began Clarke, staring at the cameras firmly, beginning the speech which would give birth to a new nation.

"Yesterday, approximately nineteen hours ago, I met in person with representatives from the United States in Washington, D.C., to end the decade long discussions which would secure independence for the Maine Islands from the U.S.," spoke Clarke, as clear as the window panes which were in the room. "I'm glad to, finally, announce that the Republic of the Maine Islands, the RMI, has been founded on the seventeenth of December, two thousand and eight!"

The senior politicians, diplomats and local citizens instantly erupted in a round of applause and cheers, causing the 53-year-old John Joseph Clarke to smile his smile, which was famous across the world.

"The Maine Islands Treaty, as it has been called, will see that the Maine Islands becomes a fully independent state, with its own government and full control over all of its affairs for the first time in history," said Clarke, his voice deep yet clear. "These powers will be exercised starting midnight today."

Another round of applause and cheers. Holy shit, though Clarke. This probably got me re-elected! Damn!

"Our government will now be created, modelled off the U.S. Government, and I will assume role of President until the end of the year two thousand and twelve, when the first RMI Elections will take place and be held in a free and democratic environment," said Clarke, turning the page of his rather short speech. "The first proper political parties of the RMI will be named the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, modelled, again, off the U.S. Government."

The same eruption of applause and cheers, properly securing a Clarke Administration. The pre-independence Maine Islander political landscape was just a territory of the U.S., which had never been grated an Assembly, like the English had done with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. They had worked quite well, though the Northern Irish Assembly was quite a shambles. A bloody terrorist group had representation there, for Christ's sake!

"Let the work of change begin," finished Clarke, walking off the stage and waving either to the officials or the cameras, nobody could tell which. Whenever he left, the large group of politicians and local citizens disbanded, walking either to their offices or home, yet still discussing what this meant for the future.

A nation had been born today.

Newly-elected president Jay Tyler awoke to his second day formally in office with a grunt. He didn't get much sleep the previous few nights with inaugural galas and parties celebrating his ascension to the presidency.

After a spot of tea and breakfast, he made his way to the presidential office - his office. He still felt a sense of awkwardness that he was now sitting in the same seat of power that his onetime paramour, the late president Mike Sarzo, occupied for several years. He turned on the computer sitting at the small table next to the large, shiny mahogany desk he sat behind.

He scrolled through a few treaty announcements, the usual declarations of war, congratulatory messages until he came upon an announcement that caught his eye.

"Hmm ... Maine Islands?" He remembered Sarzo once lived in Maine in the days before Sarzonia was founded as a colony. He knew Sarzo was fond of his time at the old Windham High School. Now a new nation was setting out in the world. He wanted to provide a friendly greeting from another nation that split off from the United States of America.

He opened the appropriate software package to a sheet of paper with the Great Seal of Sarzonia already affixed and began writing the message.

Subject: Sarzonian Greetings.

Dear sir,

The Maine Islands thank you and your nation for their greetings to our nation. The RMI would welcome an exchange of embassies with Sarzonia, and we are extremely confident that our nations are beginning the walk of friendship and prosperity, right here today.

Technically, we are not a nation yet, so embassies, conferences or other diplomatic events cannot be arranged, though at exactly midnight the Maine Islands will be a nation. Celebrations are already commencing, as if it was New Year's Eve already!

Though I can assure you, your government and the Sarzonian people that as soon as possible, I will start arrangements for an embassy exchange between our nations, and possibly a conference. Sarzonia and the Maine Islands may be allies sooner than we think.

Above all, the Maine Islander people thank you and your nation for your kind greetings to our nation, and are confident that this is the start of a friendship which will last for centuries.

Yours,
John Clarke.
President of the Maine Islands.

Mr. President,

I bring greetings from the Republic of Lincolnton. Like yours, this nation once had ties to the United States of America though these were severed long ago in the decade just before the rise of the Confederate States.

We welcome you to the international stage. With your permission, we would like to send a delegation to your soon-to-be country, timed to arrive just as midnight arrives, with the goal to establish a formal embassy.

Holy Office of the High Lord, His Imperial Majesty Ilfir Erenthi III

To: President John Clarke, newly elected President of the Maine Islands.
From: High Lord Ilfir Erenthi III.

I congratulate your simultaneous declaration of independence and ascension to the seat of President. As a leader of a nation who rose to the throne while it was embroiled in the turmoils of post-rebellion depression, I fully understand the pros and cons of being the head of state in such a position and I hope that in the years to come your nation grows into a prosperous and powerful state. Until that day, the Holy Empire of Anemos Major will stand by your side.
