A small group of Kappa had been wandering east towards the provinces of humans.
Swimming through the occasional river, but mostly walking in the rain, they hadn't encountered many people, humans or others. But that was no surprise, the Kappa were physically superior to most creatures in the area.
Wandering down the road, talking in a voice with a slight hiss, footsteps could be heard behind them. They turn around, noticing nothing.
The leader, Mizusama, said in a loud and hissing voice
"Beto-betosssan, hai doozo."
Immediately, a few large, rotund creatures appeared. They had no eyes, but a mouth that was almost a yard across.
The family of Betobetosan wandered past, and the Kappa set upon them, quickly breaking most of the bones with the martial art known as Koppo*, and devoured the family.
"Bessst meat in daysss." said Mizusama when the meal was finished, and the group moved on through the province of Omi. They had skirted the capital, too populated. They would be at the borders of the Shirakawa clan very soon.
