An Open World (FT, open)

Otagia
16-12-2008, 23:09
The planet was bloodied, great scars running across its surface. A great desert of green glass encircled a nearly pristine city, while mountains of basalt erupted like warts in seemingly random locations, remnants of crust burster impacts from a long-ago battle. Numerous temple complexes dotted the surface, empty save for the native fauna, which picked over the bones of tens of thousands of dead Hyperboreans.

Once, the planet had been known as Tankai, a holy world of a sort. Now, abandoned by its previous inhabitants, it was New Jigoku, a world claimed by the Otagian Regency, but inhabited only by ghosts and silence.

Temporarily, of course.

The fiery trails of ships entering the atmosphere streaked across the sky, noted by a few grazing deer and an unmoving Herakles Avatar, waiting patiently in the ruins. Springing to life after years of silence, the Avatar began the process of reformatting its interior systems, dismantling weaponry in exchange for fabricator arrays, drone bays for effector shovels. Around it, dozens of other Avatars resumed motion, spooking the local fauna into a mass exodus of the city.

Walls began to mend, and in the distance, new spires began to grow around the landed vessels, the miles-tall, impossibly complex webs of softly glowing glass contrasting sharply with the existing Hyperborean architecture. In the temple complexes, broken floors where vegetation had encroached upon the artificial were repaired, skeletons tidily consumed to power the fabbers of the housecleaning Avatars.

Within a day, a new, vacant city had been born, and Hyperborean temples and cities were repaired, pristine again- Except for one. The streets of the glass-circled metropolis were empty of obstructions, but the occasional building was still shattered, windows remained free of glass, while the prismatic tendrils of the Otagian megacity crisscrossing in the sky above, a silent monument to the downfall of the previous inhabitants of the world.

Appropriate considering the intentions of the Regent-mind.

Mr. Hubtar,

We believe we have an ideal location for you. Located on the underside of one of the lowest strands above the Trinitite Desert Ruins, the Elysium series of hab-modules features breathtaking views of the Hyperborean temple complex; five bedrooms, each with their own bath, a full kitchen, a pool which may double as a null-g entertainment zone, with underwater access to the suite's balcony, and a wide variety of other amenities. Tram and null-G access is seconds away from these sumptuous suites.

If these habitations are to your liking, they can be made available to you as soon as your payment is approved by our banking system.

Yours,

Mr. Raython,

Unfortunately, due to current dictates requiring the preservation of Hyperborean structures, we will not be able to approve your unique offer at this time. However, locations are available throughout the Webs, as well as on the outskirts of several of the Hyperborean complexes and several of the basalt impact plugs. Tourism revenue in these areas is projected to be high, and would prove ideal sites for your venture.

This email comes in response to the article an Otagian Fleet representative ran in the Kostemetsian Primary Finance Journal. I am Lecia Thomas, junior vice-president in charge of capital assets acquisition operations for New Berlin Multivector Services, and I and my employer wish to look into acquiring corporate offices in your section of the Otagisphere.

We provisionally pledge one billion argentars (as at this time, approximately two billion, two hundred million standard Galactic credits) in support of the group of facilities provisionally designated NBMS corporate activity arena x-ray bravo; in return, we request corporate offices to contain one thousand personnel and accommodation for seven hundred and fifty, as well as docking space to fit three trading cruisers (approximately 750 x 250 x 75 metres).

Please tender your response as soon as possible.]

Ms. Thomas,

We would be more than happy to honor your request. Office space has been set aside in the Upper Web, along with appropriate outdoor docking facilities within walking distance of your offices. Housing has also been reserved, with all units within one minute transit of aforementioned offices. We hope these arrangements are acceptable, and that your organization will find New Jigoku to be most profitable.

We in ConFilm have noted with considerable interest your project to set up a trade and cultural exchange hub in New Jigoku. In the spirit of the mutual promulgation of new corporate ventures and the promise of fruitful prosperity, we would like to set up corporate offices on New Jigoku to expand and participate in the activities of this world.

If possible, we would also like to obtain filming permits for some of the old Hyperborian districts, as some of our directors have found them suitable for their projects--rest assuredly, we wouldn't damage them at all and we'd keep them preserved.

I look forward to your reply.

Mr. Weischauer,

We are happy to approve your request, pending payment of an appropriate lease, namely a sum of three billion USD. This would cover both a semi-permanent lease of space in the Webworks (commercial and residential) and docking accommodations, as well as the appropriate permits for filming amongst the abandoned Hyperborean settlements (time slots to be determined). If these arrangements are acceptable, space can be made available within forty eight hours of your approval.
