OOC: This thread is to RP the interactions between Anagonian and Leistungi soldiers guarding Hauptstadt, the capital of Leistung. Unless you, for some reason, have troops in my capital city for whatever reason, this RP is closed. In case ODECON members were wondering, the nearest ODECON base is run by Brittanican Adenia, so BA, if you'd like to join in, feel free.

Outskirts of Hauptstadt, Leistung
The supply truck ground to a halt outside the gates of the Anagonian base. The people of Hauptstadt had woken up that December morning to find makeshift buildings and an Anagonian flag flying from a strategic position on a hill overlooking the city, and though it was common knowledge that the Anagonians would be establishing a base in that location, the suddenness of its erection surprised even the engineering corps of the Bundesheer. Within minutes of noticing the erected military base, Chancellor Ringkampf himself approved the construction of a makeshift road to link Fort Imperius and Fort Adler, a Leistungi base located a few minutes away from the newly established Anagonian position. The truck was the first of its kind to enter the walls of Fort Imperius.
An Anagonian soldier walked up to the truck and spoke in accented German. “Supplies from Fort Adler?”
“Yes sir. Bratwurst, sauerkraut, soljanka, and of course, beer,” the driver responded, noticing that the man’s face seemed to light up at the mention of the last two items.
“Soljanka?” the Anagonian asked, curious. “Soljanka is like, ah…solyanka?”
“Yessir, but with a Leistungi twist. We’ve added much more sausage, you see,” he said with a smirk. The soldier rolled his eyes, waving the truck through.

“Should we go over to them?” the young man asked, muttering under his breath to three other similarly aged men. The oldest one raised his eyebrows and chuckled.
“I think they’d sooner stick you on a kebab, Hans,” he said dryly, observing the group of straight-backed, uniformed Anagonian soldiers, each of whom appeared to be trying to sample some of the local cuisine and ending up simply moving it around, bored. He rubbed his hands together, his standard-issue olive green sweater and white dress shirt doing a terrible job of insulating him in the frigid Leistungi winter. Another man, his name tag reading, “Kaufmann,” leaned casually against the brick wall.
“We’re working with them now, you know. The least we can do is get to know them.” He took a deep breath and walked over to the table, the other three men’s eyes darting left and right to see what the others would do. Eventually they too worked up the nerve, and slinked over to the Café table.
Kaufmann reached the table first, nodding at the Anagonians who quickly rotated their necks to meet the approaching soldiers as if they were under attack. They muttered something in a language he didn’t understand.
“Are you boys new to Leistung?” he quipped, hoping that his compatriots were exaggerating about the constant vigilance of Anagonian soldiers.

Sergeant Mike Hudson had a blunt looking face, like a professional wrestler on steroids, and his figure matched the assumption he could have easily broke bones in a twenty men army. He held himself, however, more in a friendlier fashion. His kind attitude, mixed with his stern ability in command, formed a mixture of likability and loyalty towards the other two soldiers near him. He had the expression of boredom until he saw the four Leistungi soldiers. He couldn't tell their position, or which branch, as he had just started to study up on Anagonia's new Leistungi allies. He looked over to Timmy, who was grinning.
Corporal Timmy Estabon had a narrower face, obviously hispanic, but fluent in english as if born to it. His form was more standard, his abilities coming out more in intelligence and navigation. Normally quiet around other people, his fellow compatriots beside him were the only ones honored enough to hear and see his openly communicative personality. His grin was the only expression of communication he had given all day here, and he nodded towards Rachiel.
Corporal Rachiel McKanny looked and talked british. She held an attitude of outgoing formality and adventurous spiriting to the wilderness. Her brown hair and beautifully hazel eyes made her the talk of most camps, but never was openly inviting due to her stern personality. Only to the group around her did she allow herself to be seen as she truly was: Curious, Outgoing, and quite cunning about playing practical jokes every now and then. She moved a hand through her hair, which was without any hold. All three were off duty, and she was enjoying it.
Mike, seeing the message from the other two, gave a weak smile towards the four Leistungi's. They all three gave the impression, however, that the four weren't welcome and that, especially from Mike, they were about to kill the poor Leistungi soldiers. Mike nodded towards the ones greeting, giving a two-fingered salute from his brow, unsure how to actually converse with another nations military without the help of a gun.
"Sergeant Mike Hudson, Tank Commander, United Republic Grand Army." He nodded towards the other two, "The man beside me is Corporal Timmy Estabon. my Tank Navigator. Beside him is Corporal Rachiel McKanny, my Gunner." He looked back at the four, then to the one that spoke. "Were honored to be here, sir."
Mike's tone was quite welcoming, but the "sir" at the end hinted towards a strict formality. Per protocol, they still had their uniforms on.

Hans Kaufmann had been waiting with baited breath to see whether the Anagonians would snap his neck instantly, and was pleasantly surprised to hear friendly words out of the soldier's mouth. He relaxed, smiling broadly at the soldier before him.
"Happy to have you in Hauptstadt," he replied. He paused for a moment, unsure what else to say. "You don't need to call me sir, by the way. I'm only a private, and I'm only in the militia, which legally makes me a civilian." Sergeant Hudson's face formed into a look which was indiscernible to Hans, and he was unsure whether he was apprehensive or disappointed.
Han's compatriots, also members of the Hauptstadt Volksarmee, had reached the table a few moments before, and the oldest, who introduced himself as Johan Ackerman, struck up a conversation with Corporal McKanny.
"So you lot are in a tank crew, eh?" he asked, legitimately curious. "I was at the Siege of Hafenstadt, you know. Bloody tankers saved my hide." Another militiaman standing close by piped in as well.
"They saved all our hides, Johan," he said, craning his neck to get into the conversation. "Don't think that you're the only one of us to have seen combat." Johan rolled his eyes as if he had heard this all a thousand times before.
"Dieter, the closest you've ever come to combat is playing football (OOC: soccer)--don't give these men the impression that you've ever done something heroic," Johan snapped back, silencing the much younger man. The Anagonians again had indiscernible looks on their faces as they observed the exchange, but Hans was fairly certain that they were stuck somewhere between irritation and amusement.

Mike looked away for a moment, fondling his drink he had ordered earlier. He took a sip, raising it, then looked back after he had another taste. It wasn't something he was used to, so his features were off as he swallowed. It tasted like ale of some kind, but it burned worse than vodka. Something he didn't like, but out of politeness he drank it anyway. He looked back at the man, noting he hadn't given his name yet. If he had, Mike assumed he had forgotten. He reached his free hand over quickly, almost like a killing blow, but it stopped a comfortable distance from Hans. His hand open, ready for a shake.
"Private Militiaman, nice to meet you. Don't think I got your name," he gave a weak smile, this time not fake. "Where I come from there are no Militiamen, only warriors."
Rachiel gave a soft giggle, around the lines of being genuinely amused. She listened to Johan and his compatriot, then waved a hand through her hair as she sat in her chair and crossed her legs. Unlike the other two, Rachiel was open to conversation and quite used to social contact. After the two were finished, she looked at Johan. "I've had a lot of soldiers tell me that, especially when we run over someone that is about to kill them." She chuckled, saying it without any hint of regret, almost as if a joke. "We drive an M1A1, so its kinda hard to tell if we crush somebody or not." Rachiel fondled her glass, taking it to drink the rest in one gulp, used to stinging tastes. She looked to his compatriot, "You were at this battle too? The siege of Hafenstadt? How many did you kill?"
Timmy just leaned back against his chair, a hard emotionless gaze fixed upon the Leistungi Militiamen. He drank a bit of his glass, setting it down slowly. It was as if he was seeing how fast he could kill them without them noticing.

Hans frowned a bit at the thinly disguised insult, but his frown was quickly replaced with the smirk as he watched the soldier drain his beer glass, his face twitching ever so slightly. "Private Kaufmann, Volksarmee. And where I come from..." He trailed off, gesticulating to the other three men, who quickly set their mugs down.
"Unsere Bürgerinnen und Bürger sind unsere Schilde!" the four men chanted in unison, eliciting similar chants from neighboring tables. Hans sat down again and picked up his mug, taking a quick gulp.
"It's the motto of the Volksarmee," he explained, noticing the confused looks on the faces of the Anagonians. "It means, 'our citizens are our shields'." The soldier appeared content with the answer, and took another painful gulp from his mug of wheat beer.
Dieter grinned as he sat back down, though it was quickly wiped away when he looked back Rachiel, realizing that she had asked him a question. "Ah, well, we were taken by surprise, mostly," he replied, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. "Most of my platoon was wiped out in the early minutes of shelling--"
Johan cut in. "Along with much of the civilian populace," he muttered under his breath.
"Yes, that's exactly right," he said, nodding slowly in agreement. "Like I was trying to say, most of my platoon, along with my lieutenant, was killed early on. We were in disarray, and much of the Volksarmee broke once the Waldenburgers broke through our lines." The Anagonian woman raised an eyebrow. "Once they broke through, the rest of my platoon and I retreated back to the city to protect the citizenry, and held out until our naval forces arrived." Dieter's mouth twisted into a strange-looking smile.
"Then we showed those damn 'Burgers how to fight a war, Leistungi style, eh Johan?" Dieter said, smirking.
"Damn straight," Johan responded in a soft voice, taking another sip from his mug.
"As to your question, though, I myself never faced the enemy," Dieter said, muttering the last bit with a mix of disappointment and relief. "I'm a combat medic, and as you can imagine, there were civilian casualties to attend to."

Rachiel gave a genuine smile, looking directly at Dieter as she did. "The most honorable thing a servant of the People can do is to serve, and save their lives." She patted his shoulder, "I'm sure what you went through was horrifying-" she looked at Johan while she spoke, making sure he knew her words were to both of them "-and seeing the very people you protect, live to die for even, get killed in a cowardly assault is something that is truly of nightmares." She nodded slowly, understanding fully their tale. Rachiel then took her hand away, "I remember something similar a few years ago, but we were in a city defending another nations people. We've never had to defend our own lands against invaders, they all die before they get to it."
Mike, purely out of character, gave a loud laugh at the end of their proclamation. He slapped Kaufmann hard on the shoulder in honest respect. He smirked, "I like you, and I respect your Volksarmee." He slammed his fist hard against his chest, making a loud thump. "To see willing People take part in the defense of their country is truly an honorable thing, and all of us were once civilian." He nodded slowly, "I don't speak for their interests-" he made a mention to his compatriots "-considering we all have our reasons, but I personally joined to defend my homeland." Mike smiled, looking at Timmy who gave a weird look in return, "Now Timmy here can be best explained as anti-social and demented, and I damn well know he joined just to kill something."
Timmy, in return, crossed his arms and looked away with a huff. He turned his attention to Rachiels conversation, keeping quiet.

Dieter, Johan, Hans, and the other militiaman laughed in unison, despite the fact that their conversations were completely different. The final man, who had yet to introduce himself, took the empty seat next to Timmy, who inched away a bit at his presence.
"Timmy, right?" he asked, extending his hand. The man frowned slightly and glanced towards his compatriots, who raised their eyebrows as if to nudge him along. "Claus Tirpitz, pleasure to meet you."
Hans leaned in closer to the sergeant, speaking in a hushed tone so that Timmy and the others would be unable to hear. "Mike," he started, unsure of how to best put his thoughts into words without offending the rather burly man. "Is Timmy...alright? I mean, the four of us are combat medics, and I daresay we've seen our share of post-traumatic stress disorder."
OOC: Short post, but we've really wrapped up those two conversations. I might try to shift the focus a bit, have some sort of crisis (minor) in downtown Hauptstadt or something...

Timmy gazed at Claus, staring first as if to kill, then softening his expression slightly. He took the hand, shaking it firmly, and gave a smile. His entire demeanor changed from one that was closed, to very open and communicative. He gazed around, as if taking in the bar for the first time, then looked back at Claus. "Timmy Estabon, that's right." He nodded, "Nice to meet you Mr. Tripitz. Sounds like your family liked the famous German Battleship, eh?"
Mike shook his head towards Hans, his tone hushed. "Timmy seen a lot of combat within recent years, and a lot of dead brothers and sisters. I'm not surprised he so closed up, but like now when someone gets the nerve to talk to him, he's very open." He shrugged, "He hasn't had any episodes yet, so I'm not sure if he has a disorder or not."

Fort Imperius, Leistung
Fort Imperius was designed to be the best defense against outside aggression against Leistung. Commanders in Anagonia had established that not only should it connect to a Naval Area, but include every viable Armed Forces asset should any enemy manage to put its troops on Leistung soil. In response, the Grand Army Corps of Engineer's had constructed the Fort into five sections. On the South end was the airfield with hanger bays and helicopter pads, and two large Hanger bays which could house one C-141B Starlifter and two C-130 Hercules for long range transport and supply runs. To the North was the barracks, which could house around fifty-thousand men during wartime operations. To the east was the Ground Vehicle Depot storing tanks and transport vehicles of various sorts, and also having the Headquarters Building where the Fort Command Staff had sleeping, dining, and other command facilities. To the West was the Supply area, storing vital supplies for the continuation of the Fort and also storing in an underground area most of the ammunition required for wartime operations.
The fifth area was the Naval Base, connected by the long gates with barbed wire. Here one Battleship or Carrier could easily make port, and it had an area where two submarines could dock and resupply. It also housed the Naval Barracks and Ammunition Depot where ships could be restocked with men and supplies if need be. Also constructed here was the Medical Ward, as most of the injured would undoubtedly come from naval vessels during wartime.
All these areas were connected by a main road, which started at the bases entrance and ended at the Naval Base. Side roads were constructed for easy access to the center and outskirts of the Fort, where in the center was the Main Headquarters where all Command Staff and Soldiers could come to the main Dining Hall for public receptions, military briefings, and classified operations in the underground portion. An antenna and radar assembly was housed here also, providing the Fort with satellite communications and live feed of current operations all across the world involving the Anagonian Military and its allies. It was at this building that the Leistungi transport truck was to back into the loading docks and unload its supplies, and where two Anagonian Marines supervised the unloading as a third operated a forklift.
Major Thomas Johnston was in charge of supervising all transport supplies, both imported and exported, that was to come through Fort Imperius. He had decided that having a Ranking Officer around when the Leistungi Soldiers came to deliver their goods would be a display of good will. Beside him was Lieutenant Baxter Yang, a veteran of many foreign skirmishes and a long time Comrade of Thomas. The forklift operator was one of the Supply Corps staff, and not of any significance to note. Currently Thomas and Baxter were exchanging a conversation about a battle both were involved in a few years back, remembering lost Comrades and enjoying a laugh about the good times.
Thomas Johnston stood about six feet and some odd inches, his Marine Battle Outfit was expertly maintained and he holstered a M4A1 5.56-mm Carbine over his right shoulder as per Fort Regulations. His Cap was still donned, displaying his Rank Insignia of Major, and his stern yet contemplative expression added a sense of authority to his outfit. He was noticeably Anagonian-African, built with a muscular and well-kept frame, and when he laughed at certian memories shared between him and Baxter it seemed the air around shook with his emotional expression.
Baxter Yang came from a Japanese family that migrated to Anagonia a few centuries ago, but he spoke perfect english. As with Thomas, he had on his Marine Battle Outfit, but holstered an M-16 on his right shoulder instead of the normal M4A1 for officers. He wore his cap too, displaying his rank insignia of lieutenant, and his uniform surrounded a average bodily frame that displayed moderate muscular mass. He stood about five feet six inches, dwarfed by Thomas in some aspects but the two not seeming to take note of it. Like Thomas, his uniform was colored forest camo, with name-patch above the right uniform pocket.
Both Thomas and Baxter stood under the loading docks lighting, easily making out a few yards around in the darkness of the evening night. They hadn't noticed any Leistungi Soldiers yet, but were quite ready to accommodate any conversation.

Hans shrugged and frowned sympathetically. "If he hasn't had an episode yet, it's unlikely that that's the issue," he whispered, leaning back and taking another sip from his mug of whiskey beer. Inwardly, Hans still wasn't entirely convinced, but as there was no easy way to ask for tests to be done, there was no point in continuing the conversation any longer.
"Ha!" exclaimed Claus from across the table. "I've tried to pass myself off as Admiral Tirpitz's great-great grandson, but alas, it seems that Tirpitz is a common surname around these parts. Not so much for Gneisenau and Scharnhorst." The Anagonian laughed heartily, and Claus relaxed a bit as well, waving over the waitress for another drink.

Corporals Jonas Breckenridge and Erich Blau jumped out of the back of their now-stationary transport truck, crunching the top layer of snow as their boots hit the ground. Unlike the militamen now plying the city on weekend leave, the Bundesheer (the regular army) could ill afford a day off with Gothic forces so close to home, and their intentions so unclear.
The two men were dressed in full combat garb as was the norm, not only because of tradition, but also because of how insulating Leistungi flecktarn (http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w146/phillipdkuhn/015.jpg)uniforms tended to be in the dead of winter. Balaclavas were pulled over their mouths and necks, and a pair of ski goggles had been pulled from their helmets over their eyes, revealing almost no skin, which could be easily frostbitten in the freezing temperatures. The back flap of the canvas cover pulled over, each man climbed back into the rear of the truck and lifted up a box of 5.56-mm ammunition making their way off the snowy earth and onto the solid concrete loading dock.
“Erich,” Corporal Breckinridge croaked under his breath, his voice straining from the immense weight of the ammo box. “Two Anagonians at twelve o’clock.” The other man nodded, making his way over to the two uniformed soldiers.
“Evening, gentlemen,” Corporal Blau said calmly, setting the wooden box down on the concrete to shake the leading man’s outstretched hand. “Mind giving us some help with these?” he asked. The two men nodded, one taking a side of Blau’s box, and the other making his way over to Breckinridge’s. With drawn breath the men finally reached the other side of the loading bay, setting the boxes down for the forklift.
“You know,” one of the Anagonians said, laughing a bit. “You didn’t need to carry these boxes. That’s why we have a forklift, after all.” The two Leistungi soldiers looked at each other blankly.
“Wundervoll,” Blau muttered under his breath. His face immediately brightened as he looked up from the ground and made eye contact with one of the soldiers whose name tag read, ‘Johnson.’ “Well look at it this way,” he said dryly. “At least now we won’t have to lift those.” He jerked his thumb towards the thirty other boxes stacked in the truck, rolling his eyes.

Thomas looked at the snow on the ground, and felt the freezing temperature. Either this entire region of Leistung was under some kind of advanced weather controlled device, or he just had the Republic Marine training to make his body believe it was a warm summer night. He figured that due to the fact he didn't notice anything, including the snow, that it was his training. In his mind he uttered a rally cry, grinning wide at the fact that neither Baxter nor he showed any discomfort in the cold climate.
Thomas watched as the forklift operator began to unload the truck in a timely fashion, coming in and out of the cargo bay doors with efficient yet safe precision. He looked to the two Leistungi soldiers with interest, having helped them and watched their movements for that short time. They seemed well disciplined, and that he respected. He stood at attention, which was normal for any Republic Marine in any circumstance, and stood well out of the way of the forklift as it drove in and out of the bay.
"So why are you two soldiers dressed for winter?" Baxter gave a chuckle from Thomas' side as Thomas continued the conversation starter, "We've been standing here all night and the only thing we've been doing is sweating our skin off."

Breckenridge raised an eyebrow and cocked his head to the side, as if trying to figure out whether the two men were serious or joking. Noticing that they were indeed standing without shivering, he removed his ski goggles and pulled the balaclava down, moving to speak.
"Erich and I hail from Nobalia, so this sort of weather is new for us," Jonas explained, realizing quickly that the Anagonians had no idea where Nobalia was. The location of Leistung and its undesirability to foreign tourists meant that citizens rarely saw foreigners (except in ski resorts up north) outside of Grestonians, who for the most part knew Leistungi geography.
"Ah, Nobalia is a Leistungi territory far to the south of here," Erich said, explaining. Jonas nodded and continued.
"That's right. Our island is agricultural, and there are none of the mountain ranges you see on the mainland there," he said, raising his hand and motioning to the mountains visible in the dim light. "In fact, it only snows rarely in Nobalia--it's the most popular vacation spot in the Republic." The two Anagonians nodded, and Erich saw the opportunity to begin a conversation.
"So where do you two gentlemen hail from?" he asked in the same overly formal tone which could be heard all over Leistung being used by those who learned English from formal schooling.

Thomas Johnston was the first to speak, standing proudly. "I hail from the Imperial Province of Drekamythia, a land with forests and mountains. And the last stronghold of the Mighty Dragon, whom we cherish and respect." He looked to Baxter Yang, who nodded back in respect. "I hail from the Soviet Province of Nodea Rudav, a land with tropical forests and the most beautiful land you'd ever see. We are the best breed of warriors, even though I am lovingly adopted by my Motherland." Thomas gazed at Yang for a short second as if questioning his assertion, then shook his head. "The man thinks Rudavians are the best, but in reality Drekamythians are the best."
Baxter looked back with an intimidating gaze, Thomas returning it. A brief silence passed, before both laughed openly and patted each other on the back. They then looked Jonas and Eric, smiles still on their faces. "Drekamythia and Nodea Rudav have a joint history of proving their worth to each other. Wasn't until the Anagonians arrived that we finally gave up and joined hands in Common Brethrenhood," Thomas commented with a chuckle. "Yea, stupid Anagonians had to ruin it all!" Yang laughed once more, then the two returned their gazes to their guests. "So anyway," started Baxter, "does Leistung have an interesting history?"

Erich shrugged nonchalantly. "The Federal Republic of Leistung has only existed for about sixty years," he said. "Before that, the Canton of Leistung only occupied a tiny part of the mainland, consisting mainly of the city of Hauptstadt and the surrounding farmland. To keep the story brief, I'll skip out on most of the details, but the important bit is that a neighboring Canton, the Canton of Steinheim (run out of the present-day city of Steinheim) invaded Leistung, and the monarchy nearly capitulated. The elected assembly and people of Leistung ended up driving out Steinheim's armies without monarchical support." Jonas nodded, taking over the history lesson while the two Anagonians leaned against a prefabricated concrete wall.
"The Kaiser was forced to abdicate after the war, and Leistung established a socialist government with a former general left in charge around the 1740's," Jonas said. "Only a few weeks later, disillusioned monarchs from the other four major Cantons invaded Leistung and forced the government to again capitulate, occupying the land until very recently."
"And what happened then?" asked one of the Anagonian soldiers.
"Again, to keep the story brief, just know that one of the Cantons decided to break from the alliance occupying Leistung, and it attempted to take Leistung with it. Rather than trade one dictatorship for another, partisans and militia from Leistung rose up and declared independence." The two Anagonians seemed confused by this turn of events, as was normal for anyone who listened to the history of Leistung.
"I suppose you're wondering how then the remaining Cantons ended up being annexed by Leistung, correct?" Erich asked, noticing the confusion. One of the men nodded. "Just as the Leistungi people rose up in 1946, so too did the peasantry in the still-monarchical Cantons, and as the majority of the Cantons conscripted their soldiers from the peasantry, Leistung's enemies were left undefended. The entire mainland and the four outlying islands were united officially on Christmas day, 1946."

13-12-2008, 01:07
"Well damn, that is confusing." Baxter looked to Thomas after commenting, the two sharing a quizzical look of amusement, then Thomas shrugged and looked back at Jonas and Erich. "Anagonia's history spans centuries really, we rely on a different timetable than most modern nations for our own historical purposes." Noticing the Leistungi's puzzlement, he continued. "Anagonia bases its history upon the point of Unification, when all three Superpowers joined together into a United Nation. This happened nearly two-thousand years ago, and is classified as After Unification. Before Unification classifies history before the Unification, and it spans nearly ten-thousand years of bloodshed and various nations rising and falling in the Anagonian region."
Baxter took over, "The history of Drekamythia started about five-thousand forty two Before Unification, when the fabled God Emperor Melkos Unchanos took power and started his mythical reign of three-thousand years. During this time Drekamythia was at war with ten nations in the Region, all of which supported various styles of governance." Thomas nodded, "During this time Anagonia was nothing more than a Kingdom on the verge of collapse, or so the historical documents tell us. Nodea Rudav was a hard-core dictatorship at war with Drekamythia." Baxter chuckled, "Short story is eventually everyone killed each other for thousands of years, and eventually after the God Emperor was killed off or something and Nodea Rudav had a revolt that did everyone come to a table and establish a United Government to prevent another Long War of that magnitude."
Thomas patted Baxter on the back, "Of course the region itself started as nothing more than wondering tribes of Barbarians, and according to historical evidence a Barbarian King rose up during what appeared to be a time of foreign occupation to free the region. So that, in our historical reference, was the starting point for regional dominance."
Baxter nodded at Thomas, "Anyway that's our history, our Unification matches the birth of Christ so were more or less in line with current time-tables here."

The two Leistungi soldiers shrugged, as if to say, and I thought our history was confusing.... Erich glanced down at his watch and a pang of fear hit him as he noticed the time. He tapped Jonas on the shoulder and showed him the watch as well, the two men now sharing the same look of dread.
"Sorry boys, but we've got to get back to the city," Erich grumbled. There was a curfew in effect for soldiers around Hauptstadt, and Bundeswehr regulations were tight enough that a man could lose his weekend pass for breaking it. "Enjoy the sauerkraut," he jested, jerking his head towards a group of Anagonian soldiers who had opened up one of the food shipment crates, not realizing that the Bundesheer had supplied the base with Leistungi cuisine alone.
Erich and Jonas climbed into the back of a waiting LY83 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=13386801) 4x4, and with a rev of the engine, set off back towards the city, the lights from the buildings glowing slightly in the foggy night air. While it was not outwardly obvious, the city was beginning to sink into a mostly sedentary state--travel by road tended to decrease in the fall and winter, and most rail lines leading out of Hauptstadt were underground and out of the public eye.
