The Mediterranean Sea is a relatively new region to NationStates, created as an off-site roleplaying environment based around our own alternate history Mediterranean region whist maintaining interaction with the rest of Nationstates and International Incidents.
So what makes the Med different from the average region?
*A secure roleplaying environment
The Mediterranean Sea was created specifically for roleplaying amongst a community of like-minded players on off-site forums, however with the option to roleplay out with the region with ease in International Incidents. In order to help ensure the harmony and commitment to roleplaying of our region, the Med Sea votes on accepting new members like many other 'closed' regions on NS, taking into account the player's history, ability and relations with other Mediterranean players.
Many other regions work in such a manner (famously Haven and Gholgoth, amongst many others), and I daresay it works with mixed success.
*Capped populations
Like a handful of other regions before this one, Med Sea nations roleplay with capped populations set by their respective player, rather than using the population provided by NationStates.net. This is to offer a more realistic portrayal of the Earth-based region, taking into account factors such as population density and ethnolinguistic migration that may have been previously ignored by some of the NationStates community. It also allows us to roleplay within a far smaller space than other regions due to our lesser territory requirements, making interaction significantly faster and easier compared to regions of a far larger scale. Currently, Med Sea populations range from 400,000 (that's 0.4 million) to tens of millions. I choose to roleplay Hryvatia with a population of 33 million. Don't know why; I just like that number, and it's not completely mad for Hryvatia's Greco-Slavic ethnicity.
*Mutually sustained development
The region itself consists of a small group of us at the moment, numbering thirteen players, who all get on pretty well and have all had at least a year of roleplaying experience on NationStates. Although time on NS does not equate to quality, I think it's safe to say that we're not terrible and are all roughly at a similar stage of the development of our writing skills. The generally chilled-out atmosphere helps too, as of yet nobody's been at anyone else's throat (touch-wood), even with different our different styles. The general air of respect for one another within the region helps significantly: roleplays are perhaps more 'organized' than on International Incidents, with one player not making a move that the other would aggressively disagree with. Whist still competitive to a certain extent, it is perhaps not comparable to some other regions or International Incidents as while POWAH is all good and well, we're in this for a laugh and a bit of fun, not to piss-off our region-mates.
*How do I join?
The *region itself (http://www.nationstates.net/09137/page=display_region/region=mediterranean_sea) is password protected to keep it secure, and in order to join you must first fill out the application in the *off-site forums (http://s1.zetaboards.com/Mediterranean_Sea/). It's simple enough to do: Guests can post in the Ministry of Immigration forum where you'll find all the information you need to apply to join, and you can simply post a topic there once you've read our rules and filled out the form. Please remember to link in your roleplaying experience though so we can get a rough idea of what it'd be like to have you in the region. Once your application is posted, the region will vote on whether or not to admit you.
*I'm not convinced...
That's cool, it's not everyone's cup of tea. The region's not some grand attempt to segregate ourselves from the rest of the NationStates roleplaying community, just so that we have a decent roleplaying atmosphere to fall back on if we want to. International Incidents is very 'general', with a huge diversity of roleplayers in terms of age, skill, experience and other traits, whilst the Med Sea's simply a sort-of special interest group. Kind of. Not kinky or anything though...
Anyho, if you have any questions please don't be afraid to ask here.
Cheers, and be chill,
~Hryv
