1964 Elections - Questarian Elections

Votes have been cast and results will be called in today. It should be clear who has achieved a victory by 1 AM GMT.

Here is a brief look at the Questarian electoral system. Results will be called in a colour code that shows majority of a state, but MPs will also be recorded via text.

Lords elections will occur tomorrow.

State Colour Code:
Green - Liberal Party
Blue - Conservative Party
Red - African Labour Party
Yellow - Democratic Front
Purple - Independent

Border Colour Code:
White – State Borders
Black – Independent Borders
Red – Signatory Borders

Total States: 160
House of Commons:
800 Elected MPs
House of Lords:
150 Hereditary Peers
110 Elected Peers (EPs)

All elections in the entire country are conducted by the First Past The Post system.

Whichever party has the majority of MPs in the Commons forms the Government. The Prime Minister is chosen beforehand (or on the spot, although this has never happened) by the Party and is not elected directly by the electorate.

Hereditary peers are banned from joining political parties. They stand as independents. Both Electoral Peers and Members of Parliament can choose to join a Party, or stand as Independent.

Each State elects five MPs regardless of its size and population. This is to ensure the superiority of the ‘Regional Equality’ doctrine over ‘weighed voting’ that comes from population heavy areas. Furthermore each Independent Cities and Independent Signatories vote for both Elected Peers (EPs) and their MPs.

Only five cities receive votes independent of their state. For example, although Tawau is a city of 17 million people, its votes count solely towards its state, and it does not have its own MP – it shares an MP with the rest of its state. However, both Sandakan and Jesselton may vote in elections for the state MP, for their independent MP, and for their elected peer.

For example; the MP for Sandakan and the Lobster Coast State is Sir John Humphreys. A citizen of Sandakan votes for John Humphreys as the MP for Sandakan, and as the MP for the Lobster Coast, Sandakan’s state. This means anyone not living in the city of Sandakan, but still in the Lobster Coast, is practically disenfranchised – they may only vote for the Lobster Coast

On the other hand, the MP for Tawau is Sir Michael Fredericks. The situation is precisely the same except citizens of Tawau do not receive their own vote for their city, they vote for the entire state, and Tawau State includes the outlying areas, and the city itself. In this way, people who do not live in Tawau are also practically disenfranchised; in both cases, the entire state that lies around either Sandakan or Tawau may vote 100% for the opposition candidate, but in both cases, if the city population outweighs the rest of the state, their vote is essentially worthless, thanks to the FPTP system.

Sam Andrews: The first states have been called and here is our Election Coverage Team. Alistair Foot, BBN Political Correspondent, Michael Thompson, from Independent Polling, Tom Richards, political editor for the National Express, and Toby Stone, political editor for the Axackal Times.

Alistair Foot: Good evening.

Michael Thompson: Good Evening.

Tom Richards: Good Evening.

Toby Stone: Good Evening.

Sam Andrews: Can you tell us why this election is so important, for our international viewers, Toby?

Toby Stone: Well, this is a landmark election. Firstly, its the first Questarian election where Africans - blacks - have the right to vote, although Questarian electoral rules say they must be propertied and literate, so the numbers will be low. Secondly, we will see whether Benjamin Russell has been able to pull of what has been called 'the victory of Liberalism' - if he wins this election with good numbers, it is likely that the Tories will never again be serious candidates.

Sam Andrews: Thank you. The first states have been called, and although it's early days, it appears that the Liberals are leading strongly, with the whole Landing region green. Tories have won some seats in the Lakes Region, but this is no surprise.

Sam Andrews: The Midlands and Lakes states are coming in early. These regions are the hotbeds of African Socialism. What do you expect from these, Mr Thompson?

Michael Thompson: Polling has seen that if the propertied and literate clause was removed, the whole of the Midlands and Lakes would be painted red - however, the numbers of Africans at this time who can fulfill these requirements are very few. Polling has shown that maybe a single seat per state will go to the Labour Party.

Alistair Foot: On the other hand, this doesn't mean a victory for Conservatism in these areas. There is every chance of ALP pulling a few states simply because of the way constituencies are formed... and Democratic Front is very popular here. If the Front has succeeded in negotiations with ALP, they may have pushed the blues out. The Rangoon results will be critical.

Sam Andrews: Some results are now coming in...

Sam Andrews: ALP win two seats. In Lahore, no less.

Tom Richards: Not really a surprise. Lahore has been a critical area where foreign charities have funded education efforts. Nonetheless, we will see how the rest of the areas goes. Foreign charity often goes into both literacy, numeracy, and especially into teaching Africans about Libertarianism, especially when from Allanea or Praetonia. We will see their exact success when the whole elections have been called, but right now, it's not looking fantastic.

So, what does each party stand for?

Liberals - Free Trade, Free Markets, continuing the war on tyranny, further emancipation and racial equality
Conservatives - Halting the war with Doomingsland and rolling back progress made on racial equality
African Labour Party - African Socialism
Democratic Front - Social Democrats

In a nutshell, really.

Liberty Coast seats have come in and Liberals have swept the polls, ousting any hope of a Conservative victory. Now the contested areas are Interior North and the Northeast, where the Tories hope to win in at least one. UDF are catching up on the Conservatives, where electoral battles are being raged in the Lakes and Midlands in a surprising UDF comeback.

In an amazing turn of events, UDF has turned the game around and overtaken the Conservatives, taking Interior North by storm. The large educated black majority in Interior North has voted en-masse for UDF, but it would have been impossible had it not been for the campaigning of UDF Party Leader Henderson, with his "A Man And A Brother" campaign that attracted millions upon millions of white votes.

Meanwhile it appears as though Communism has been stemmed as the ALP gains no more seats. The Allanean/Praetonian campaign to educate the Africans via charity education has, apparently, paid off. As predicted the Liberals are holding their coastal seats nicely.

As election counting comes to an end on this historic day, it appears that, unless they make a miraculous turnaround, the Conservatives have surely come third.
