Questers
21-11-2008, 19:02
Votes have been cast and results will be called in today. It should be clear who has achieved a victory by 1 AM GMT.
Here is a brief look at the Questarian electoral system. Results will be called in a colour code that shows majority of a state, but MPs will also be recorded via text.
Lords elections will occur tomorrow.
State Colour Code:
Green - Liberal Party
Blue - Conservative Party
Red - African Labour Party
Yellow - Democratic Front
Purple - Independent
Border Colour Code:
White – State Borders
Black – Independent Borders
Red – Signatory Borders
Total States: 160
House of Commons:
800 Elected MPs
House of Lords:
150 Hereditary Peers
110 Elected Peers (EPs)
All elections in the entire country are conducted by the First Past The Post system.
Whichever party has the majority of MPs in the Commons forms the Government. The Prime Minister is chosen beforehand (or on the spot, although this has never happened) by the Party and is not elected directly by the electorate.
Hereditary peers are banned from joining political parties. They stand as independents. Both Electoral Peers and Members of Parliament can choose to join a Party, or stand as Independent.
Each State elects five MPs regardless of its size and population. This is to ensure the superiority of the ‘Regional Equality’ doctrine over ‘weighed voting’ that comes from population heavy areas. Furthermore each Independent Cities and Independent Signatories vote for both Elected Peers (EPs) and their MPs.
Only five cities receive votes independent of their state. For example, although Tawau is a city of 17 million people, its votes count solely towards its state, and it does not have its own MP – it shares an MP with the rest of its state. However, both Sandakan and Jesselton may vote in elections for the state MP, for their independent MP, and for their elected peer.
For example; the MP for Sandakan and the Lobster Coast State is Sir John Humphreys. A citizen of Sandakan votes for John Humphreys as the MP for Sandakan, and as the MP for the Lobster Coast, Sandakan’s state. This means anyone not living in the city of Sandakan, but still in the Lobster Coast, is practically disenfranchised – they may only vote for the Lobster Coast
On the other hand, the MP for Tawau is Sir Michael Fredericks. The situation is precisely the same except citizens of Tawau do not receive their own vote for their city, they vote for the entire state, and Tawau State includes the outlying areas, and the city itself. In this way, people who do not live in Tawau are also practically disenfranchised; in both cases, the entire state that lies around either Sandakan or Tawau may vote 100% for the opposition candidate, but in both cases, if the city population outweighs the rest of the state, their vote is essentially worthless, thanks to the FPTP system.
