Akimonad transitions to democracy
Dr. Jules Hodz, Lord Protector of Akimonad, announced Executive Decree 1038 today, which changes Akimonad's government from an autocracy to a representative democracy.
Executive Decree 1038 creates a tricameral legislature, made up of the Council, the Commons and the House of Lords. Both the Council and Commons are popularly elected. The House of Lords is appointed by the Lord Protector. Provincial Parliaments, previously the only form of popular representation in Akimonad, have been dissolved for the time being. Executive Decree 1038 designates that all parties in Provincial Parliaments are eligible for election in the Parliament. Several prominent parties, including the Liberal Party, Conservative Party, Republican Party and Social Democratic Union, have announced their intentions to stand in elections that have been scheduled for some time next month.
Dr. Hodz subsequently announced the formation of a new party led by him, the Market Party. The Classic Liberal Party, a party with the same views as the Market Party, has announced its decision to dissolve itself and integrate into the Market Party, giving Dr. Hodz's venture sizeable membership.
Several smaller parties, including the Socialist Party, the Marxist-Leninist Party, and the Fascist Union, have also announced plans to run, despite a large voting populace that largely scorns extremism in any form.
The move to democracy was hailed by many as another step in "liberalisation" which is seen as making Akimonad more friendly and agreeable to the region of Haven and the entire world. One pundit wrote that "this move brings us more into line with our Kingston Pact allies. We no longer feel like the odd man out, or the last one standing in the game of musical chairs."
Opposition to the move was largely from liberal extremists who believe that Parliament will be little more than a more democratic way for Dr. Hodz to cement his hold over the country.
Opinion polls showed an overwhelming 98% approval for the move, which grants the Akimonadi populace numerous new political freedoms which they have been without since the last democratic regime was overthrown in 1922 by a military junta. No subsequent government has had a form of uncorrupted democracy since then.
Dr. Hodz presently maintains his role as Lord Protector. The head of each party, unless otherwise decided by the party, stands as a candidate for Lord Chancellor of Parliament, which is a new position created to be Head of Government. Dr. Hodz will appoint a cabinet of advisers from Parliament that will include the Lord Chancellor.
Elections have not been scheduled with certainty but are planned to take place in the next month. This coincides with procurement of equipment required to hold elections, which has been unnecessary for several decades.
International opinion at press time was mixed.
