First and Foremost

Maya Rajah, the soon to be President-elect of Jerate, sat at a nondescript oak desk in the library of his estate. Nothing was special about this place; in fact, a little less than half of the books kept in his library were nothing short of filler. Regardless of this fact, Maya Rajah took the opportunity to appreciate this place for its true purpose - a peacekeeping sanctuary, kept tucked away from the norms of society.

Rajah, dressed in a modern conformists' favorite suit and tie, sat idly as he waited for the Representative from Congress to arrive. The President had an interesting day ahead of him - he was to make a speech; the first international broadcast of the Jerati News Network, in fact. Yet he was not nervous - not a bead of sweat dripped from his brow. He kept it cool, but certainly not complacent.

A voice came from the main hall, just outside the library, "Mister Rajah, Sir?"

The man was stout in nature, but Rajah seemed pleased to see him. "Yes?" he questioned.

"Your car is here, Sir," the man put simply.

"Well then," the President said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "How do I look?"

Maya Rajah smiled, and the emotion was returned by the large man in the doorway. "You look wonderful, Sir," the man said with a clear sense of sincerity. The man was only referred to as Brooks, and he was Maya Rajah's head of security.

The President-elect walked towards Brooks and shook his hand. A bow of heads took place, as was commonplace throughout the Estate. Maya Rajah did not think less of his employees, nor did he think less of anything, really, for he was the type of man to find beauty in shrubbery.

The car ride was swift, and for the most part, quiet. Arriving at the newly reconstructed Congress building, Rajah was escorted inside and briefed on what was about to take place. It was the beginning of Jerati history, and perhaps the beginning of a new chapter in the world's history, too.

3 hours later...

Camera strobes popped off everywhere. The morning suddenly took on a surreal agenda for Maya Rajah as he walked up to the podium, a vast amount of Jerati citizens amassed at the bottom of the steps.

“Hello,” Maya Rajah began. His first word was met with a wave of applause, setting the tone for the rest of the speech to come. He was surrounded by an enormous, adoring crowd, who were already predisposed to like the man who stood before them. After all, he was elected with a 78% public approval rating, and chosen unanimously by Congress to represent the ideas of the nation. “First and foremost, I would like to begin by thanking the loving people of Jerate, and the loving people of the international community. If it were not for you, all of you, I would not be here - and it is with great humility that I accept my role as the President of this great nation.”

“We are gathered here this morning to usher in a new era of harmony into the world. We are gathered here to bring hope to the face of this planet, as well as to the hearts of those who inhabit it. We are gathered here to show the world that we are not afraid, and that we, too, can make something out of nothing. We are gathered here to right the wrongs of those who stood before us, and those who will fall after us.”

The crowd cheered on. The speech lasted just over an hour, yet Maya Rajah made his points clear. He was to begin the agenda that got him elected to office in the first place - an agenda that put the people first. It was an agenda that would swear against acts of aggression; an agenda that would allow the government to build a military not to flex its muscles, but to protect the nation and its people against wrongdoers; an agenda that would preserve the rights of the individual just as it would the rights of the State.

Closing out his speech, Rajah spoke softly into the microphone, “We are a compassionate people, speaking our minds as freely as the morning birds. We are a tolerant people, loving those who love us, and questioning those who do not. We are a brave people - a united people. I am proud to declare myself a citizen of Jerate based on these common principles. In fact, I have never been more proud in my life.”
