European Embassies Disbanded!
French, British, ambassadors baffled by countries disappearance.
[A photo of the British ambassador, looking rather puzzled and shrugging occupies the prime position on the front page]
The Tsar today declared that the diplomats of the now-vanished European nations of France, Britain, Germany, Spain and so forth will be expelled from their embassies in St. Petersburg on the grounds that those nations apparently no longer exist.
Nations that will retain their embassies include Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and China.
The United States ambassador and his entourage apparently departed early Monday morning, stating that, in light of the recent events, they were returning home, although, thus far, exploratory missions westwards have revealed totally unknown landmasses which have yet to be identified. For more information on these new lands, see page A4.
The Tsar has graciously offered asylum and Russian citizenship to all disaffected citizens of the world, and, although all foreign assets within the Empire have been nationalized (see last weeks article for details), Nicholas has offered to return the property of any citizen who can produce the appropriate documentation. Naturally, this should not prove difficult, as any business operating within the Empire is required to report to the Ministry of Finance for taxation purposes, so all legal business should be quite alright.
Reports of the Swedish ambassador attempting to shoot at police are apparently grealty exaggerated...
War in China!
Emperor attacks British, French, German, Japanese holdings!
[A photo of what looks like a European-style building in Beijing, with soldiers on the walls firing into a crowd]
The Chinese Emperor today declared that all Europeans (Russians and Russian subjects excepted) and Japanese within the Chinese Empire were subject to Chinese law, and were now considered servants of that empire. The result was, predictably, insurrection and revolt.
Currently telegraph traffic in the area is unreliable, however, we have reports of the British embassy in Peking holding out under siege with the remaining staff of the German embassy. There are further reports of fires in the major cities of what is now Southern China, the nation apparently having vanished south of Nanking.
The Chinese Emperor has urged for peace between his nation and Russia, and Tsar Nicholas has apparently agreed to a meeting with the Chinese government to discuss the situation.
Meanwhile, the nationalistic resurgence apparently brought the country into a unified state which it has not had the benefit of since the mid-19th century. For more information see the article on A7, 'The Division of China: European Colonies and Warlord Holdings'...
Food Riots in Moscow!
Peasants Storm State Bakery.
[A couple of photos of rioters and an empty storehouse of some sort]
A famine in the Russian heartland has grown out of control in recent days, with peasants staging protests in response to poor working conditions and lack of food. Events today culminated in a riot during which the state bakery on the eastern side of town was attacked, resulting in a loss of nearly a ton of grain and the entire days bread production. Apparently fifty peasants and workers were killed in the stampede as well.
Troops of the Muscovy Grenadier Regiment were deployed to the streets to stop the rioters and succeeded in dispersing the crowd with a volley of rifle fire above the heads of the rioters. MVD Police officers and Gendarmes arrested the ringleaders and especially resistant rioters.
So far the famine has been confined to the central districts. Currently the Tsar and his advisers are formulating a relief plan to ship grain to the area and relieve the starving population.
