Ascelonia

With the absence of the emperor and the incompetence of the military leadership with the "Ralkovian Necklogen Bomb Fiasco", the people clamored for a different government and better leaders to pull the nation through the period of reconstruction.
The approval ratings of the Ascelonian Imperial "Technocratic" government were plummeting to an all-time low of 13%. The compromise government was decaying as fast as it had been constructed. An unpopular government propped up by approval from the military and party leaders was falling apart like a glass bottle being placed under enormous pressure.
And there was great pressure. Pressure to succeed. The government was rushing to gain popularity by rebuilding Ascelonia City, which was now a pile of radioactive dust, farther south next to the South Seas. They have also meddled around in other foreign affairs in an attempt to bolster support from the populace.
However, the old days of the Ascelonian Empire are far gone. People no longer support their leaders with undying loyalty. They no longer join the armies to die for their leaders. The old customs of the Emperor Cult have long sinced died out as barbarians permeated the realm with different ideas and traditions.
People now question authority and ask questions before they shoot. The old system could not function, no matter how propped up by foreign aid or the military. The old system could not continue to survive under the Emperor. Thus, the Ascelonia Consolidated Industries, a collection of businesses who merged together in the common interest of profit for their nation, met to prepare for a change of government.
In the later days towards the continued decay of the relatively new Empire, it acted like many other of the Ascelonian governments in the months before their collapse. Little news came out from the government and it seemed like people were doing nothing, but in reality, the government was in a frenzy to bring about control and order to the country.
Orders interfered with other orders. It was impossible to distinguish who had superior jurisdiction and without a strong, central leader like the Emperor (who was indisposed), the government began collapsing. The Triad Consulate was constantly bickering and passed legislation that overrode the others'. It wasn't a question of who had more power or who was more competent. It was a question of who could send out their orders via E-mails/IMs/Letters faster.
The Council of Nine had fallen apart. With only three of the original members meeting to discuss issues while the other nine claimed their own autonomous territories within the Empire of Ascelonia. The people were furious and colonies outside the motherland were no different. Nothing was being done. Colonies began claiming they had independence and established their own independent governments.
One entity had been assuming much of the responsibilities the government had not been. That was the Ascelonia Consolidated Industries. They were seen as propagators of a new Golden Age. They had single handedly turned towns toward the south into bustling metropolises. Ascelonia's entertainment industry had been revitalized and tourism was on the rise.
Their factories gave out jobs to the unemployed and the company had most recently aided the Parilisan government with a national emergency. It was the obvious choice of the people to vote for this entity. With polls informing the company leaders that they were beloved by the people of Ascelonia, a quiet coup began.
The Old Regime was going to destroy itself. That was a fact. It was only a matter of time. Ascelonia Consolidated Industries, on the other hand, had competent leaders and had expanded into every corner of Greater Ascelonia. Greater Ascelonia was a like a tower of blocks and Ascelonia Consolidated Industries owned well over half of it. They could remove a few pieces here and a few pieces there and the whole Greater Ascelonia would come crashing down.
The Board of Directors knew this. They were not going to let Ascelonia fall apart into dozens of tinier states. The Board of Directors were from all across Greater Ascelonia and knew that they needed to ensure that Ascelonia stayed whole and strong. They would make a few deals here and a few threats there. Compromise was a bargaining chip and a tool, but not enough to save Ascelonia as a whole.
There needed to be promise, power, and leadership as well. Those were things that the Board could easily provide.
