Maximus Aurelian stood before the large mirror, breathes coming quickly as he starred intently upon his own reflection. The Prime Minister couldn't help but notice that the man starring back, was himself, a nervous looking man. How ironic, that the man who had stood as the proud and strong face of Korinsus for so many years, now found himself frightened simply by the idea of a mere dinner party. Shaking his head, the man allowed a smile to cross his lips, though it was one of mock-relief and forced enthusiasm. He knew deep within himself this was no mere dinner party, this was his entrance to the World Stage. This was his party to announce the arrival of his people, of his country, of himself.
Looking away from the mirror, a mirror that in itself was a symbol of Aurelian wealth, the Prime Minister closed his eyes. Sucking deep breathes into his lungs, the man reminded himself all was to be alright. This night was not one of violence or talk of war, nor was it an attempt to show military strength off. This night was one being conducted under a flag of peace and invitation, his showing of Korinus's standard and expectations of peace. All he could hope for was that these Leaders that had been invited, this heads of global power would feel the same.
His nation was one that was battling for it's spot, for it's recognition by it's more powerful and established neighbors. In the eyes of them what was Korinsus if not another small country, one cleaved from the fires of civil war. What was to assure them that another coup d’état would not, for another time, destabilize the country. Clenching his fists in controlled anger, Maximus reminded himself that now things were far different. Things had changed since his taking of office.
Korinsus, the once small and weak country had grown under his watchful eyes and guiding hands. A Nation that had once struggled to even produce enough coin to feed itself now bought and traded goods. Under the sweeping reforms of the Aurelian Government tax-cuts had brought large corporations to their knees and taken the burden from the middle-class. Government funded healthcare had nearly eradicated the wide-spread sickness that had once plagued the country, making it look as if it was one of a third-world nature. In an otherwise unstable and violent nation, police had been trained to the brink of military expertise and sent in to clean up the cities. In a daring move, Maximus himself had pushed for the legalization of narcotics, only to place heavy taxes upon them. He had pulled the blip of the map nation out of it's darkness, and from it's shell he had forged the begining's of an Empire.
Suddenly three knocks drew the Prime Minister from his silent musings. Turning his head towards the large and ornatly carved oak doors the beckoned forth his mysterious caller. With a groan the door opened and in walked one of the many members of his secruity detail. " Sir, diplomats and representatives are begining to arrive." Nodding his head in a silent thanks Maximus Aurelian turned once again towards the large mirror, and this time he saw the political side of him. Now he saw a man nearing fifty looking back at him, black hair graying at the temples and skin begining to wrinkle. Starring back at him he saw a bold and strong face. He was as ready as he could hope to be.
Several stories below in the Grand Hall and location of the Prime Minister's dinner...
Gavin Tacitus sat at one of the many tables that had been purchased from across the globe, fresh from the woodworking shops of the finest craftsmen. Apparently Maximus was pulling out all the stops for this one. Looking to his left he saw only an empty chair, the chair that soon the Prime Minister himself would occupy, and to his left sat one of his many appointed officials. Gavin held the esteemed position Chancellor of the State. In other words he was Maximus's expert of homeland issues. Because of that simple fact as the country had flourished under the watchful gaze of their Prime Minister, Gavin himself had climbed the ranks. He was one of the few in all of Korinsus that had the honor of knowing he could influence the Prime Minister, though he was also one that took advantage of it at times.
Gavin was a cold and demanding man, one that seldom forgot being wronged. He had been suspected many times of abuse of power, though his close-knit relationship with Maximus had always saved him from any sort of judicial punishment. Slaps of the wrist had been his curse for as long as he could remember. Religious figures and right-wing nut jobs had always irked the man. He was suspected of orcastrating the murders of Religious Leaders known to oppose Korinsus policy and criticize their leader. He despised and distrusted large corporations and wealth that was out of his control. In his eyes if science and fact could not support something and if the government could not tax and control it; well then Korinsus didn't need it.
"Ladies and Gentleman. Esteemed Guests of Honor, Lords and Ladies. Prime Minister Maximus Aurelian." Following the shouts of the man announcing his arrival, which was an old Korinsus tradition, the Prime Minister descended the stairs to mingle amoung his expected guests. He had high expectations of this evening, so much so that for the past weeks he had spent hours pouring over reports gathered from across the Nation. He was more then prepared to answer any question about his people and homeland. From healthcare to census reports.
The Grand Ball of Korinsus had begun.
