Cohenia's
Lost Children

Cohenia is one of the original members of the Kingston Pact. A country of nearly nine billion people, it lies in the northeastern corner of Haven, just north of the Soviet Bloc. It is a country of stark contrasts: whereas in the cities there is wealth aplenty, in the rural areas things have changed very little since the days of the Empire around the turn of the century.
I decided to come to this country under the guise of a real estate agent to record one of the Cohenian institutes for orphans. Cohenia has the largest share of such institutions in all of Haven. Pushkino is a remote town in southern Cohenia, about an hour from the nearest town. The source of much of the employment in the area is a former restaurant, now a social care home. Twenty-three physically- and mentally-disabled children live here. It is the autumn now, and for the next three weeks, we will be filming in this location.

The dilapidated restaurant serves
as an orphanage.
Very little work is ever done to
improve the condition of the
building.

with her, aside from her blindness.
Lidiya, to her left, speaks with a
speech impediment, claimed to be
cerebral palsy—a condition many at
the home are labeled with. A nurse
holds Masha's hand to guide her.
