*crack*

A short staccato and the crows burst into the sky, cawing noisily in protest at the sudden interruption of the silence.

Slowly he took a step forward, along with the rest of the line. It seemed so unnatural. The sun was shining brightly, not a single cloud in the sky. Even the normal haze of the city was gone today, this most inauspicious of days.

*crack*

The crows seemed less annoyed this time. Another few steps, twelve he found. Why was there not a single cloud in the sky? It was unseasonal and surely, surely this day of all days called for a gloomy sky, for the heavens to burst forth and the crash of thunder to bear witness to the gloom of the day?

*crack*

Fourteen steps this time. The crows appeared to have left, their raucousness absent now. A distant boom sounded, cracking out of the blue sky. Must be a Phantom, he thought, remembering a presentation the Air Force had made two, three years ago. A lifetime ago it seemed.

*crack*

And a lifetime ago it might as well be, thought he, as the line once more shuffled forward. Why was he even in this damnable line? He was just a junior legislator, on a few committees, but nothing important. He had only been an office a few terms, there was no great string of abuses in his name.

*crack*

Sure, he had taken some graft, but who didn't? How else was one supposed to raise the money so that they could get into and stay in office? Besides, he'd always thought of himself as a reformer, one who worked for the good of people. Of course, he hadn't accomplished that much yet, but Rome wasn't built in a day, was it?

*crack*

More steps. He was near the front of the line now. Strange that he never heard any words. It did not qualify as a deathly silence, but so odd that the fusillades were never accompanied by words, not even a shouted order to fire.

*crack*

And now he, along with several others, stepped out into the street circle, their boots becoming sticky with blood as soldiers guided them to their positions along a pockmarked wall. No blindfolds. It was over now, no hope for salvation. All that he had striven for, gone. All that he had pledged to do, meaningless. All of his hopes, all of his dreams, every grand ambition, dissipated, as though they had never existed. Now, in this moment, he had become entirely meaningless.

One of the soldiers, an officer he presumed, raised his arm in the air. As the arm swung down, he found the strength for one last act...

"WHY?!"

Broken, bleeding, sobbing as the pain wracked through his body, that one question was a constant refrain whispering from his lips. Slowly, he became aware of the officer marching over to him, withdrawing his pistol as he did so. Kneeling down next to him, the officer whispered but one single, short phrase.

"Because you were nothing more than the establishment."

*crack*

Today the People's Institute for Justice announces that it has removed the corrupt oligarchs from power in the glorious republic of Haestingas! Their relentless corruption and neglect of the populace in favor of enriching their own selves has been brought to a quite final end. Their personal property has been confiscated by the revolutionary government, as has the property of those corporations, both foreign and domestic, who have greatly benefited from the corruption of the government.

Alice Calloway has been appointed as President of the Provisional Government. Elections for the legislature shall follow in six months time, once the Provisional Government has normalized affairs.

This is not a thread for war. You may posture all you wish, but any invasion, blockade, etc. will simply be ignored

The point would be to have a more interesting introduction RP than "LOL I SEND MORE TROOPS THAN YOU HAVE PEOPLE!"
