ESR interest and discussion

Whatnow?

Now, we've had a long-running recruitment thread on I.I., but the damned unappealing thing became constituted chiefly of Greal's enthusiastic bumps and useful information was scattered across umpteen pages, so I thought I'd take it upon myself to try a new approach. I'm not an administrator or moderator, but one of the more active and enduring participants, so I thought I'd try to help us out.

ESR has been on-again off-again for a long time, but at the moment it is on, all be it at a low setting! We are in need of some more players who will stick it out. I think that now, after some months, we're down to a small core who really want some long-term and involving RP, so we need others who aren't just going to flake out on us when one of their threads takes more than an hour to get a reply.

GUYS! LET'S NOT JUST BUMP THIS, BUT KEEP IT ACTIVE BY DISCUSSING EVENTS AND SITUATIONS! Let's keep interested players up to date on what's available and how active various regions are. That's got to be more appealing!

CLAIMS

I'm going to attempt to keep an up to date list of active nations and claims so that new players can easily see what's available. I really want this to work, so if you commit to it, you know that at least someone will stick around to play things out with you!

The following list is based upon a recent activity check, and may need slight revision if the community agrees that some (France, for example?) posted in the Activity Check thread but have failed to act In Character.

(More information on claiming available on off-site forum, drop by! Basically it's a three RL nation limit, with restrictions on claiming more than one great power.)

What's goin' on?

We're -I think- in 2010, but we're not that pushy about it, and we play essentially modern-tech (some of us have been waiting for destroyers and submarines for a couple of years, that's all ;) ).

Europe

Here, things are quiet. Too quiet. As in Asia, the landscape may be about to change as the Soviet Premier has declared the Union's partial dissolution in late 1991 to be illegal and henceforth unrecognised by Moscow. From Kyiv to Tashkent alarm bells are ringing. Will the Soviet Army back-up the Premier's implied threats?

Asia

The stirring of the Soviet beast, nourished by a petrochemical boom and encouraged by the accession of Finland and the world's limp reaction to a Ba'ath Socialist invasion of Xaristani Kuwait, also threatens the status quo in the Caucasus and Central Asia. This begs the question, will the USSR challenge the Mongols over Kazakhstan?

The Mongols, for their part, along with the East Asian Commonwealth, have invaded the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (NPC, caretaker-managed by myself until we get a result or a dedicated player), dragging the United States into the conflict as chemical weapons rain down on Seoul and Tokyo in response to the unprovoked aggression. A shaky cease-fire is thrown into question by the death of Kim Jong-Il, reported by KCNA to have been the result of his valiant defence of a children's hospital attacked by Mongol and US forces. Will negotiation prevail, or must the invaders take on the masses of the Worker-Peasant Red Guard?

Omar Qottar's Ba'ath Republic has sprung from obscurity with a surprise attack on the militantly atheist Xaristani occupiers of the Holy Land, the supposedly richer and better-equipped Israeli-Arabian defenders capitulating in Kuwait after only hours of hostilities. Baghdad recognises a Kuwaiti referendum on independence, but raises doubts about the validity of the -very close- vote and retains strong forces in Kuwait ahead of the country's first elections. Anarchist India backs the Ba'athists to the hilt. Creeping annexation of Kuwait may make the authoritarian-socialist Ba'athists the world's leading oil state, and President Qottar has hardly begun to flex his military muscle.

Americas

Chazaka has just raised its head on the international scene, but what has it to say for itself? The Americans are grudgingly engaged in Korea, and the world is waiting to see how Washington reacts to the Soviet ultimatum to former republics and the apparent strengthening of Moscow-Baghdad ties. Is the era of America's supremacy to end in a whimper, or fight back with a roar?

Africa

I had the impression that we were in late 2009... but yeah, the date doesn't matter too much, so don't worry about that.
By the way, Gataway(Egypt, Libya, Algeria) is still active. And I would take a Georgia-Armenia-Azerbaijan or a Latvia-Lithuania-Estonia claim if I were just joining, just to see what would happen. Would the US help you in defending your nation against the USSR, or would they leave you for dead?

And why does everyone forget things going on in my nation?

South-East Asia

A terrorist attack eerily similar to that of 9/11 has happened in Kuala Lumpur; an airplane crashed into the Petronas Towers. As of now, no one knows that is was caused by angry westerners taking revenge the only way they knew how - by doing the same thing to the most populous Islamic nation on the planet.

Another Hijacking took place mere hours after the first one. Members of the Free Papua Movement landed the plane at a small airport in a city known for its small-scale rebel attacks in the eastern region of Nusantara and demanded freedom of their nation. If not, they would blow up the plane filled with tourists from various nations including the US and Great Britain. Nusantaran Special Forces have surrounded the airplane, but threats of exploding the plane have forced them to negotiate with the terrorists.

Two Nusantaran 'invasions' (as some have called it) of East Timor in a short span of two months has forced the international community to send peace-keepers to East Timor. These peace-keepers will soon have to leave, putting small East Timor by itself surrounded by a Nusantara desprate to create a united Archipelago.

Ah, sorry man! I thought of you regarding East Timor, but apparently convinced myself that most of the action there was over. I over-looked the fact that you're also knocking chunks out of yourself.

As I said, though, the list above is based on the recent activity check. Gataway, I believe, is yet to respond. I know he was around relatively recently, but I've just logged in and don't see any new IC from him since the check, either. If he's still with us, he'd best speak up before someone bags Egypt!

Meanwhile, the Soviets and Ba'athists are moving towards a grand carving up of the world and game of seeing-if-anyone-has-the-balls-to-stop-us ;)

Petrochemical prices are probably about to break the gajillion-dollar a barrel mark.
