The nation of Malhavok is in a state of chaos. Following days of widespread protests, violence has erupted in the streets of the nation's largest cities. What began as peaceful demonstrations against the current government's economic policies escalated into full blown riots when the details of the administration's new operating budget was leaked to the press.

Unaccustomed to riots in the streets, local law enforcement agencies seemed ill-prepared to diffuse the situation. In some cases, police response was overly harsh, which only agitated the crowds further. In other cities, the police forces were simply inadequate, and were easily overwhelmed by the rioting mobs. While details vary depending on the source, it is clear that police and protesters have exchanged gunfire in numerous cities.

Video Clips:
- Young man shown picking up tear gas canister and throwing it back at police lines
- Several people shown kicking and beating on a police officer, who is laying on the ground seemingly unconscious
- A crowd of people scattering as what appears to be gunshots is heard in the background

At a press conference today, President Whitman urged the nation to remain calm, and threatened to deploy army units to put down the riots if the protestors would not disperse. It is unclear at this time what effect the threat of military intervention has had on the riots. Early indications appear as though there are fewer protestors on the streets, but it also seems as though there has been an escalation of violence among remaining rioters.

To complicate matters, a group known as the Socialist Underground released the following statement urging citizens to take up arms against the current government.

"Fellow citizens, the time has come to topple the corrupt regime that has so ineptly ruled us these last 12 years. The conservative bought our votes by promising us more jobs, better pay, and lower taxes. What they delivered was a failure of an economic policy, which sold our national resources to foreigner for a pittance, and allowed millions of jobs to be outsourced to other nations. In the last 6 years alone, we have seen the average wage in our nation drop nearly 50% while our rich keep getting richer. Simply put, their gross mismanagement has turned our nation from a prosperous paradise to an impoverished nation begging for handouts.

Today we saw the administration's new budget. At a time when we are struggling to provide our families with the bare necessities, they have elected to raise our taxes. What for? Aircraft carriers and submarines. We are facing the greatest economic crisis of our generation, and our government wants to take food out of our mouths to buy more military hardware. Our nation has not seen war for a hundred years. We don't need warships. We need healthcare. We need financial assistance for those of us struggling the worst. We need a government that cares for the welfare of its citizens.

The time has come for change. We need to shed ourselves of this government that exploits us, and install one that serves us. Our economic policies must make sense for the working class, and reward them for their efforts. Most importantly, we need a government that tends to the needs of its people.

The time has come for the people of Malhavok to take up arms, and take back the power in this country. Together we cannot fail."

OOC: There will likely be a war, which will be open. However, I reserve the right to close the thread if we get so many people that the war becomes a cluster****. I also reserve the right to tell people to take a hike if their tech is too advanced, if they field militaries way beyond their means, or if they behave poorly. Once the fighting starts, I will make an OOC thread. I will include my map in the OOC thread. For now, know that I use Australia as my map, but at twice the scale.

IC:

The WNN Special Report on Malhavok quickly drew the attention of the Red Tidean State Intelligence Commissariat. The information was forwarded to various analysts, most of who, came to the same conclusion:
"Maybe a civil war, maybe not..."

The news continued up the RTSIC chain of command. Eventually, a order was passed back down: check for dossiers of important scientists and engineers living in Malhavok, particularly look for fields that would be of interest to the Red Tidean industry and military.

Orders also came down to draw up a very preliminary of a so-called 'Infrastructure Evacuation Plan'. A team was hastily assembled and began work on the plan, using official data published by Malhavokian corporations, as well as its government.

None of it was concrete yet, whether that would change would depend on the situation.

OOC: Just getting an elaborate foot in the door.

Arkadian Security Inc. saw an opportunity to profit here and also stop the Red Tideans from gaining control of and puppeting Malhavok. They began offering contracts to the federal, state, and local governments of Malhavok. They had the equipment and supplies necessary to knock some sense into the revolutionaries (though many people in Ascelonia were sympathetic).

The Black Fist sought a new breeding ground for terrorist activity. They began sending specialists and trainers to prepare the socialists for the fight of their lives. They would need everything they could get, not only to fight the government but to also fight foreign involvement.

South Point City, Malhavok – The southwest quarter of the city is ablaze this evening following an air strike on a regional National Guard armory facility. According to government sources, hundred of armed citizens acting on behalf of the Socialist Underground stormed the facility to seize its weapon stockpiles. Unable to retake the facility in a timely fashion, the air strike was ordered to prevent arms from falling into revolutionary hands.

According to eye witness account, moments after the building was initially struck, a massive secondary explosion rocked the city, leveling buildings in a quarter mile radius. Shockwaves from the blast are said to have shattered windows for several miles in every direction.

A spokesman for the Socialist Underground claims their supporters had left the military installation nearly 15 minutes before the air strike, and blame the administration for the recklessly destroying a large section of the city.

Efforts by local police and firefighters to cope with the situation have met with resistance by Socialist Underground supporters.

For now, the city burns.

In related news, violence against police and law enforcement agencies is spreading throughout Malhavok particularly in the western provinces, which have been hardest hit by the recent downward spiral of the nation’s economy.

WNN has obtained exclusive footage of what appears to be an ambush of a police cruiser, purportedly responding a domestic dispute.

This video was recorded by a camera mounted inside the police cruiser in question. Be advised, the video contains graphic violence, which may not be suitable for children.

Video Clip:
Police cruiser is driving down a street with what appear to be apartment building on either side. Unexpectedly, the windshield and hood of the cruiser erupt into flames as it is struck by a Molotov cocktail. Seconds later, the cruiser crashes into a light post. One officer appears injured and unconscious. As the other dazed officer radios for help, the two of them are dragged from their vehicle, beaten, and robbed of their weapons.

In response to this attack and similar incidents, President Whitman has declared a national state of emergency, and has implemented a 7:00 national curfew. According to a government press release, police and military personnel have been authorized to use lethal force against rioters and agitators, and will be enforcing the new curfew vigorously.

-------

As violence continues to escalate in Malhavok, the nation’s military is beginning to make its presence felt. Tanks, armored personnel carriers, jeeps, and infantry have moved into a dozen of the nation’s largest cities in an effort to restore order.

OOC: It will probably take me a couple more posts to set the stage for full-blown civil war.

Red Tide: My nation's economic problems are a relatively new development. Prior to this last decade, the nation was fairly well off. Infrastructure, education, etc are on the decline; but Malhavok does have all the technology you would expect from an industrial nation. We have nuclear power plants, and until recently even had a space program. In short, there are engineers and scientists, and many of them may very well be unhappy with their current circumstances.

Ascelonia: Both the government and the Socialist Underground are receptive to outside help.
