World News Network Special Report
The nation of Malhavok is in a state of chaos. Following days of widespread protests, violence has erupted in the streets of the nation's largest cities. What began as peaceful demonstrations against the current government's economic policies escalated into full blown riots when the details of the administration's new operating budget was leaked to the press.
Unaccustomed to riots in the streets, local law enforcement agencies seemed ill-prepared to diffuse the situation. In some cases, police response was overly harsh, which only agitated the crowds further. In other cities, the police forces were simply inadequate, and were easily overwhelmed by the rioting mobs. While details vary depending on the source, it is clear that police and protesters have exchanged gunfire in numerous cities.
Video Clips:
- Young man shown picking up tear gas canister and throwing it back at police lines
- Several people shown kicking and beating on a police officer, who is laying on the ground seemingly unconscious
- A crowd of people scattering as what appears to be gunshots is heard in the background
At a press conference today, President Whitman urged the nation to remain calm, and threatened to deploy army units to put down the riots if the protestors would not disperse. It is unclear at this time what effect the threat of military intervention has had on the riots. Early indications appear as though there are fewer protestors on the streets, but it also seems as though there has been an escalation of violence among remaining rioters.
To complicate matters, a group known as the Socialist Underground released the following statement urging citizens to take up arms against the current government.
"Fellow citizens, the time has come to topple the corrupt regime that has so ineptly ruled us these last 12 years. The conservative bought our votes by promising us more jobs, better pay, and lower taxes. What they delivered was a failure of an economic policy, which sold our national resources to foreigner for a pittance, and allowed millions of jobs to be outsourced to other nations. In the last 6 years alone, we have seen the average wage in our nation drop nearly 50% while our rich keep getting richer. Simply put, their gross mismanagement has turned our nation from a prosperous paradise to an impoverished nation begging for handouts.
Today we saw the administration's new budget. At a time when we are struggling to provide our families with the bare necessities, they have elected to raise our taxes. What for? Aircraft carriers and submarines. We are facing the greatest economic crisis of our generation, and our government wants to take food out of our mouths to buy more military hardware. Our nation has not seen war for a hundred years. We don't need warships. We need healthcare. We need financial assistance for those of us struggling the worst. We need a government that cares for the welfare of its citizens.
The time has come for change. We need to shed ourselves of this government that exploits us, and install one that serves us. Our economic policies must make sense for the working class, and reward them for their efforts. Most importantly, we need a government that tends to the needs of its people.
The time has come for the people of Malhavok to take up arms, and take back the power in this country. Together we cannot fail."

OOC: There will likely be a war, which will be open. However, I reserve the right to close the thread if we get so many people that the war becomes a cluster****. I also reserve the right to tell people to take a hike if their tech is too advanced, if they field militaries way beyond their means, or if they behave poorly. Once the fighting starts, I will make an OOC thread. I will include my map in the OOC thread. For now, know that I use Australia as my map, but at twice the scale.
