History

The House Mel'mtor formed several thousand years after the Crown Wars. Several pregnant drow women who had fled the original drow city [whose name was lost in antiquity] discovered a cavernous region where over the next five hundred years an underground empire would manifest. Once stabilized and hidden from what lurked in the cavern the women formed a pact to not only refrain from slaying eachother but that upon the birth of the first child that woman would rise to be Matron Mother.

The women over the course of the year and the year following gave birth to five children. A rather young female only seventy-two fell into labour and gave birth to a healthy boy. Her babe, who for now she would be ashamed of and revile; would grow to find he is the chosen prophet of Selvetarm. Soon to follow each female would give birth to two more girls and the mother whom gave birth last found herself with a pair of twin boys.

When the children grew older they were trained by their mothers for their new roles. One day a vision from Selvetarm comes to young Tluthlyn'onia and he discovers a magical great sword of immense power. Tluthlyn'onia took his fellow male drows out into a goblin encampment on the other side of the caverns and pulverized the goblins. With goblin slaves at their disposal, they forced them into labour camps and began building the city from the ground up.

After the small house was constructed the Matron Mother Luaeylvayas ruled with a benevolent fist, but a fist never the less. Goblins were dragging down other drow from other caverns and forcing them to House Mel'mtor. On the last day of construction and an increasing population of over one thousand drow, the four Mothers had a toast. "On this day, we name our house Mel'mtor for we are mothers of the abyss."
Luaeylvayas disappeared that night; several days later she was found decapitated with eight long slashes shaped like spider's legs.

Houses

Today, Mel'mtor is radically different than it was then. In fact, over that last thousand years several houses formed. Hunafin is a mercantile house renound for the metals they possess. Godeth is a militiamen house whose people are involved a great portion in the military, especially their lizard rider's. Auvryana is the House known for their sadistic tortures. House Ouss'und was acknowledged for their abundance of spiders. Do'ndar is noted for their large population of wizards, even females which was a rarity. These are the six majour houses as well as fifteen minor houses scattered in Idilumrae.

Military

Each house has it's own military. Mel'mtor has the largest army of any of the Houses. Two thousand commoner troops. One thousand are highly trained warriors. Two-hundred Fighter Mages, one hundred and fifty priestesses. Three hundred Divine Champions of Lolth [all female commoner's who were extremely devout who are not commoners.] Two hundred lizard riders and the rest are enslaved monsters who are compelled to fight through magic, taken from the house's zoo. Accompanying the troops were usually three thousand slave troops complied of Goblins, Ogre's, and Troglodyte's.

Hunafin has a small army. It consists of five hundred trained soldiers led by a few priestesses, wizards, and a tiny shell of Ba'qe'shel bards. House Hunafin's trading connections allow them to hire mercenaries during war times. House Godeth has one thousand men. A huge core of this are lizard calvary. All of their soldiers are of excellence and a couple of wizards as magic support aside from priestesses. House Auvryana was an unremarkable house for military and consisted really only of commoner soldiers. House Ouss'und has an average army build of eight hundred. The priests and clerics bring spider aberrations or compel giant spiders to the battlefield. House Do'ndar has small army of only five hundred but is almost comprised entirely of fighter mages and has a large amount of wizards to support it.

The selvetargtlan are tied directly to the church of Lolth and act as its military arms. One thousand of Selvetarm's faithful spend most of their days guarding fortifications while the selvetargtlan are rightly known for their skill in battle. They place little emphasis on tactics and strategy. They act as the "stormtroopers" of the drow military.
It is also known in war times the drow bring forth slaves on masses.

Religion and Culture

Lolth is the main driving factor in the lives of the drow. Almost all drow worship Lolth. Lolth is a capricious and evil deity who sets her own worshipers against each other for power. She demands absolute obedience and considers males to be inferior. Women especially the High Priestesses ruthlessly dominate the society. Their will and whim is law; they are expected by Lollth to satisfy their dark appetites as a show of the power they have gained through the favour of Lolth; Lolth expects sacrifices both in wealth and souls. Preachers of philosophy of conquest and subjugation of all those beneath the drow race; which is everyone.

She is opposed in the drow pantheon by her son Vhaeraun. Vhaeraun believes all drow should be equals and that the constant in fighting of the priestesses of Lolth makes the drow weak; the Matriarchies must be smashed. This is because the drow are naturally more fertile than other elven races. They believe with Lolth gone, they could dominate all the other races of the world. They constantly make their fortresses and strongholds on the surface, but their numbers are small due to the near complete control of the church of Lolth. His Clerics are known as nightshadows and they are master assassins as well as priests.

Selvetarm is the grandson of Lolth and the son of Vhaeraun. Selvetarm was nearly turned to good by eillistraie, but was tricked by Lolth into destroying a spider demon whose evil drove him insane. He now serves her utterly; he is allied only to Lolth. His faithful emulate the relationship between Selvetarm and Lolth with the priestesses of Lolth.

Eillistraie is the daughter of Corellon Larethian and Lolth before she turned against him. She was tricked by her mother into aiding her when Lolth rebelled against the seldarine. Despite being absolved of any crime, she insisted upon being banished along with the other evil drow gods because she believed that dark elves would need a beacon of good in their reach. Her followers though exceedingly few in numbers live on the surface and try to convince other drow to as well. they honour her through singing and dance, often naked in moonlit glades. They practice all forms of swordcraft to protect those in need and try to give aid to any good communities, especially elves around them. Eillistraien priestesses, like Lolth priestesses only allow women to become priestesses; because the numbers of her priestesses are so small, her high priestesses are always granted raise spells to raise slain members of the faith.

Ghaunador may aid worshipers who meerly pay lip service to its rituals, but may also devour or maim them without warning. Ghaunador is an ancient deity, venerated by the largest slimes, slugs, and other crawling things. He robbed them of their intelligence a few millenia ago in a fit of anger. It is only through the worship of races, such as drow and aboleth that his religion has returned. His followers are insane and all one day wish to sacrifice themselves to Ghaunador, allowing themselves to be devoured by him. His church is outlawed like all others in the domain of Lolth.

Kiriansalee was once a dark elf queen, who became a goddess and was forced by Lolth to serve her. She resents and hates Lolth but is insane. She prefers the company of undead to living creatures and her priestesses are focused on thought of revenge. Her priestesses often live in graveyards surrounding themselves with undead. Once a year they attempt to ressurect as many dead bodies as they can and unleash them upon the world for twenty-four hours to seek revenge on their killers.

The drow despite being evil are still elves, they appriciate art and beauty but are terribly sadistic and uncaring of their fellows. Love is considered a weakness by those who worship Lolth which is most drow. The drow enjoy all of the pleasures of life including the darker ones to extremes in emulation of their goddess. They universally consider themselves to be superior to other races, but despite bearing large numbers in children constant in fighting keeps their numbers in check.
