The Romulan Republic

The Star Republic is a nation lying in the central lands between the Empire and the Hospitalers, spanning parts of both Evermoors and Malchest.
History: legend tells that it was formed by a traveler from the stars, who settled in the region of Evermoors on the south bank of the river that his people came to know as (translation of "little river" in latin). using his knowledge and wisdom, the first protector saved his people, and soon attracted the loyalties of others who wandered the wild. Using the river, his people began a profitable trade, enabling them to hire mercenaries and merchants who crossed the wilderness, exchanging gold and land for loyalty and service. Many of these men eventually settled with their families on the protector's lands, though population remained small for the Republic's territorial size.
The Republic profited, but the second Protector feared the dependence upon the Empire for use of the river, so he declared war against a small feudal kingdom to the south and, in the 70th year of the Republic, seized direct access to the sea. The second Protector than ordered the construction of a fortified port at the river's mouth, and commissioned the beginnings of a navy. This was the start of the "Golden Age" of the Republic.
Politics: The Republic is sub-divided into 10 provinces, each of roughly equal population. Each township has a council, which elects a representative to the regional council. This in turn elects a representative to the Senate Assembly, which appoints the Protector.
The Protector is elected for ten years, and has all but complete control over the military and foreign affairs. However, a two thirds vote of the Senate can remove him if their is evidence of Marital Misconduct, Treason, Nepotism, or Interference in Senate Affairs. In this case, the protector will be expelled from the Senate, no longer allowed a role in public office, and a replacement will be elected (usually the Speaker of the Assembly). The Senate also controls most domestic affairs. The Judiciary and Provincial Governors are appointed by the Protector, but must be approved by the Senate.
Economy: The main exports are lumber, cattle, and copper, and the main imports are wine, textiles, and steel. Currency is made of Gold, Silver, or Copper coins.
Culture: Their are several religions. Most of the population worships their local Gods. A few sects practice worship of the dark Gods and/or necromancy (these are arrested by the state).
The Republic is a meritocratic society (for example, those who rise through the ranks to achieve status as a merchant or general are given seats in the Senate). It also prides itself on order and representative government, and looks down on other states. However, it is currently not expansionist, save in economic terms.
Military: The army is divided into divisions (3 per province; 2 standing, one reservist). Each division contains 5 legions, and each legion contains 8 companies. A company contains roughly 100 men, giving the entire army roughly 80,000 active duty troops and roughly 40,000 reservists. This however is discounting local militias, official's personal guards, the navy, and the merchant marine. Total military strength is probably close to 150,000. These can be fully mustered in 3-4 days, thanks to magical means of communication.
A legion contains 4 Infantry companies, 2 auxillery companies, and two logistical/seige support companies. An infantry company fights in formation, using a mix of pikes and short blades to fight while fighting behind broad, rectangular shields. Discipline is emphasized. However, each infantry company also contains a corps of crack longbowmen (19-36 per company). Auxillery companies contain scouts, lancers, and horse archers. They are used for scouting, raiding, and harrying. The logistical companies contain servents, lightly armed guards, engineers, and seige engines. Traditionally, these were mainly Ballistae and Trebutchets. However, light cannon have recently been adopted in a couple of eliet legions.
The navy consists of 12 Heavy Transports, 15 Galleys, 3 Caravel like vessels, and dozens of smaller craft. Each ship carries marines who fight with axes, short swords, short bows, and a Greek Fire equivalent.
Magic: Their are fewer who can use magic than in some other states, but mages are tolerated as long as they register with the state. If so, they are permitted to practice their skills within the laws of the Republic, but may be called upon to serve in times of war or catastrophy. Mages are used by the military for healing, intelligence and communications (telepathy, precognition, scrying), as bodyguards, as spies and assassins, and for putting wards around defenses.
