"The Hidden" signup thread for MT nations (character driven)

This is a signup thread for a character driven story. The basic story line is one of a science experiment gone wrong and is based on the Half Life 2 mod "THE HIDDEN". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hidden_(computer_game)) The storyline revolves around the retrieval of an escaped research subject with the twist that the subject is highly agile, incredibly strong and nearly completely invisible

Background to this story is during the 1970's, soviet forces built a secret laboratory in a remote location in Karshkovia to study human genetics and use the knowledge for the military bio-weapons division. The scientists began working on DNA manipulation and discovered in their research humanity can not totally be accounted for in natural evolution. There are parts of the whole that leave questions as to what happened in the distant past. Those findings are shelved after a discovery that introducing certain combinations of DNA alterations within a single subject allows for the phenomenon of biological light refraction.

Through the years, criminals and dim-witted soldiers were used as test subjects to perfect the needed genetic alterations for a nearly invisible asassin. Military leaders, however were not satisfied with the results and demanded more than an invisible human. In the early 1990's, continued experiments allowed scientists to increased the skin's resistance to heat and cold, vastly increase muscle mass, and give a subject amazing agility. This was not a complete acheivement though as many subjects lost their lives or were driven insane by the irresponsible and immoral experiments.

Early into the new millennium, Karshkovia made a bid for and acheived independence from soviet rule. The laboratory was not shut down and experiments did continue on, though now funding came from soviet-placed spies in the Karshkovian military funneling money from various other projects. By 2004, these spies no longer were in power but the funding for the facility was already in place so work continued on without anyone in Karshkovias Government aware of what was happening. Soviet leadership also had no idea of this research as information on it had fallen through the cracks over the years since Karshkovia had broken away. In early 2006, subject number 921 arrived at the underground facility. Apart from the other previous subjects, subject 921 was a soldier of above-average intelligence and in excellent health. 921 had been taken/kidnapped from the military guard unit stationed at the site by desperate scientists and experiments on him lead to the first subject with all required traits but no defects which had caused the other subjects to die.

Our thread will begin just as excited scientists eagery transmit to the Soviet leadership that they have acheived success and now know how to create this new super-soldier. It takes many days before the old files are found and many more before the leadership is convinced of the importance of the findings. They immediately mobilize a team to recover the scientists, the research and Subject 921 from Karshkovia.

While this is happening, the transmissions are intercepted by other groups/nations who quickly understand what they are decoding in the transmissions and the potential for a windfall payment if they can auction the data off to the highest international bidders. Teams of independent (or national) soldiers/mercinaries set out to beat the soviet team to the prize. Other nations also have caught wind of this prize and sent their own teams to retrieve the data.

During this, the other military men posted at the facility learn of what the scientists have done to a fellow soldier, they attempt to confront and arrest the scientists. During the confrontation, the mercinary groups/soldiers arrive at the facility (though all teams enter the facility at different locations) and confusion sets in amoung everyone because not a single team knew or suspected that there would be other teams besides the soviets (and the soviets had no idea at all they were going to be fighting off other groups). All of the military guards posted at the facility are killed during the fighting.

A firefight breaks out among the teams and someone in-advertantly shoots a small propane tank and the resulting explosion stops the fighting for a time (while people recover their senses) and releases a pissed-off subject 921 from his holding cell. Taking a knife from a dead guard, subject 921 attempts to escape from the underground facility before the lab self-destructs. (Data on the subject, and scientists will be up for grabs though the real prize is the subject himself). The lab was designed to self-destruct with a low-yield nuclear device that would seal the lab but not break through to the surface if there was any breach of security and the subject escaped from his holding cell.

From this point forward, we will RP as the timer on the self-destruct slowly counts down and the subject 921 becomes not only the hunted, but the hunter.

What I am looking for is anyone who wishes to play the following roles:
3-4 National or Mercinary groups looking to obtain information on this genetic discovery.
1 Person to play the Soviet group
1 Person to play the Scientists (non military people but are extreamly smart and know the facility better than anyone. They can create improvived bombs, chemical agents, and use other failed experiments to ward off the other groups and to ward off "the hidden".)
I will play the hidden.

Anyone interested?

On second thought, anyone may play a mercinary, or the scientist or the Soviet teams since they are non-government specific. So this isn't just open to MT players.

I sign-up for death guard, it will be interesting because death guard already use light refraction technology which allows them to become hidden for a few minutes before a set of battery cells dies

Can I use the following technology though?

Selevex gel- its pretty much a super sticky glue that bonds with skin, it can only be taken off with formula 41.

Kolokol Gas- Knocks you out within 2 seconds. It only needs to have skin contact to work, but you can breath it in to.

Electric Nets- Using 4 small necklogen batteries the net can be set up to block a 15 foot by 15 foot area.

Stun gun, trip mines, and spray paint.

Ralkovia, as long as they are used wisely and not to do a 'smash and grab' to end the story right away, I'm totally fine with it. Just keep the amount of each item to reasonable levels and we are cool.

I'd like to pl;ay as a mercenary force. The varangians are my standard mercs. and i can use just a single detachment or squadif that works? for more detailed info check out the Varangian mercenary force in sig and check under the detachment name Rho

OOC: Uh, no it wouldn't. The refraction of light pertains to how light changes speed when traveling through a different medium, creating an effect where the light appears to bend. It has nothing to do with invisibility, despite what Mr. Bond may argue.

I'm ok with this DaWoad, and welcome to the RP! I'd like to keep the max limit of personel on the teams at 12. That way you could RP losses (while all teams will take) however still have a group to RP with after a battle.

Can I join?

Certainly. Do you want to join as your nation's own special forces or would you like to join as Mercs, the Soviets, or the Scientists?

Well, as a compromise can we limit the 'refraction' suit technology to just the team leader of that group? That way not everyone has it but yet it could make for some interesting RP. I was thinking of a CRYSIS suit when it was first mentioned so it could be interesting. The only thing I ask is for a reasonable cooldown/recharge time or limited number of battery changes and I personally promise to not take advantage or godmode if you do end up using your suit tech.

As an aside for everyone: unlike "The Hidden" game, I will not be using the 'aura vision' that is available in the game itself.

Also, the self destruct system can be stopped if you have a hacker/cracker on your team though the computer system linked to the SDS is located at the very lowest level of the complex. the SDS will be set to 12 hours (the complex will be sealed off when the SDS starts and the 12 hours was designed to give time for the people in the facility to capture the escaped subject(s). If any team wants out, they will need to either stop the countdown or burn through four-foot thick nuclear blast door(s).)

I would be interested in filling the role of the Soviets, but I am unfamiliar w/ Half-Life. Would that be a problem?
Karshkovia

FUS: No, not a problem at all. The computer game is a basic first person shooter so nothing really different than any other FPS you may have played. The RP is going to progress just like any other RP would, the only difference is there are a few goals (and not all have to be accomplished). It's not really based in the Half-Life world so we won't be RPing in that kind of environment. It is going to be based in NS's world with all the technology and such that you normally would encounter. I'm just taking elements from the game that I think could turn into a fun RP.

Goals for Players RPing teams (mercs, soviets, scientists, soldiers)

1) Capture "the Hidden" because he is *the* proof that this genetic tinkering works. Killing the Hidden isn't recommended but depending on your team leader or orders, he could be killed.

2) Capture the suitcase in the lowest level of the complex. The suitcase contains a data disc and papers which contain all information needed on creating the genetic modifications needed to remake the changes that "the Hidden" has. The scientists, in there preparing to be extracted, have destroyed all other data reguarding their projects.

3) Stop the Self-Destruct sequence. Kinda self-explanitory. There is a 12 hour timer on the SDS and the computer core is located in a locked, secure room at the bottom level of the complex.

4) Capture a scientist from the scientist team. Taking one will give any nation a good start on recreating the genetic code needed to recreate a "hidden".

5) Keep the other teams from obtaining anything they can take back to create their own "hidden"

The goal for me playing the hidden:

1) Get out of the complex alive and free. Limitation: I can not hack the computer system to get out so I am trapped until someone opens the blast doors.

Player are allowed to create alliances, break alliances, go for a stealth/non-lethal approach, kill everything approach...basically play how you want. Also, teams are allowed to capture whatever other teams have during battles (example: one team captured a scientists and another team ran into the first team. they have a battle and depending on the RP, the teams could end up losing/gaining a scientist)

To 'win' you just need to escape with one or more of the three (scientist, hidden, suitcase) objects.

Sounds more like the Resident Evil movie. No annoying girl-puter, is there?

PS: by 'Soviet' forces, will I need to RP my own country? I assume yes...
Karshkovia

FUS: the game is definately different. Youtube "The Hidden" and you'll see what I mean. I think of it as a cross between a "Predator" movie and Jack-the-Ripper. No girl-puter to worry about :D

You certainly could RP your country or if you wish, RP something made up. If you RP your country, I could then use you as either my parent country (which we broke away from in the late 1990's) or a splinter of the parent country :)

well, my history has always been that we were an independent socialist state that never joined the ussr or the warsaw pact. so, if you want to be a former possession/state, that's fine w/ me.

OOC: Hmm, nice set-up. I am a fan of Half-Life, but I have question to ask: Would I be able to use SRPA (the guys whom you ran a story on) as my sort of "team"? They'd be looking to capture "The Hidden", and hide it away due to fact that it could be a danger to the people of Ustio - that's kind of SRPA's thing. Also, my special tech:

Silence - SRPA Soldiers Communicate On A Closed Radio Network, And May Not Interact With Anyone Outside This Network Without Permission From The Higher Echelons. The Network Is Very Heavily Encrypted.

Thermal Cloaking - SRPA Soldiers' Suits Have A Complex Network Of Tubes, Through Which Cold Water Can Be Continuously Pumped In Order To Lower The Wearer's Body Temperature To The Point That They Would Not Appear On Modern Thermal Goggles & Imaging Cameras. To Use This, SRPA Soldiers Are Put Through Rigourous Training To Withstand The Drop In Body Temperature.

Navy - SRPA Operates Several Zumwalt Class Destroyers As Mobile Command Posts & Resupply Bases For SRPA Operations. These Stealth Destroyers Are Very Difficult To Detect On Radar.

I have no problem with your soldiers at all. Feel free to use them.

The only restrictions I would put would be that the Thermal Cloaking be on a reasonable cool down system (works for 10 minutes, has to cool down for 15 minutes or something like that) or have a limited number of replenishes.

Communications as you have are ok, but remember after the blast-doors close in the underground facility, all communication with the outside world is cut off. The only way to restore communications would be to open the doors. The other way is to use the unsecured communication equipment near the command center near the lower levels of the facility

The ships are fine. I do want to point out that Karshkovian coastal defenses include regular hourly patrols along the shorelines and out to 30 miles from shore from coastal patrol boats (corvette class ships) and aircraft. Also underwater listening networks are set up to detect and track ships up to 50 miles from shore. Permanent sonar stations are placed 10 miles from shore and alternate between passive and active sonar at random intervals. Slipping in, dropping your team and slipping out is totally acceptable. Staying for any longer length of time (especially the daylight hours) exponentially raises the risk of detection. Undeclared shipping is escorted away from national waters. Undeclared ships-of-war are given one warring shot then fired on if not complying in returning to international waters. Of course allies are allowed in Karshkovia waters and allowed to dock and replenish supplies at Karshkovia ports.

OOC: It's only for use communicating between squad members. It saves them having to remove their masks. I should also stres that each SRPA suit has a cyanide injector, which will be activated if the suit is opened in the incorrect fashion.

OOC: The ships operate in international waters, and don't enter any territorial waters unless it is absolutely neccessary. Another thing I should ask is: is this fantasy restricted? Since in a fantasy context, through SRPA's own genetic experiments, their soldiers all have some sort of enhanced ability - telekinesis for example. But, if you're restricing that kind of caper, then their orders are not to use them.
