The Wild lands (FT - Open)

Old Spacers would sit in seedy bars on run down trading stations reciting stories on the horrors found in the Wild lands of Sigma Epsilon. For the mere price of the cheap homemade grog they would impart a near encyclopaedic knowledge of slavers, pirates and deserters who called the asteroid fields their home. Those that were still able to form sentences at the end of the night and hadn’t been dragged off into a side room by vastly overpriced whore, would even mutter about the creatures that existed in the deepest expanses of the Wild Lands, some say at the very edge of space it’s self.

Now of course many of these stories are the drunken ranting of a down on his luck freighter pilot, but some hold truth. It is true that no space faring nation had dared to attempt an expansion into the region, even though the asteroid field holds untold amounts of wealth for those able to mine it. It’s also true that this hub of illegal activity sits dangerously close to a major trading artery, a fact that has been quietly brushed under the Colonial Assembly’s richly decorated carpets, until now.

It is well know with the Colonial Star Empire of Wintrees that many of the more corrupt Ambassadors within the Assembly have links to the ‘Corporations’ of brigands operating the in the Wild Lands, who reap the rewards of the untaxed and uncontrolled mining of the asteroids. Due to this, home truth of sorts, Military intervention was not a option. Any Military action had to be voted on by the entire Assembly and corruption ran rife. Only Lord Seric, the benevolent and all seeing Emperor could order such an action without the Assembly’s approval. He was wrapped up in his own pursuits at the moment however and didn’t have time for the trifling affairs of state.

What was an option was the Wild Lands Trading Company.

The plan was ambitious, drawn up by a few Ambassadors whose greed was wrapped up in legal pursuits. They created a Trading Company, set up with full approval of the state to operate outside of the perceived boarders of the Empire. It was cleared in the Committee room even before it could be voted down by the Assembly, allowing the company to be set up in a derelict space station on the edge of the Wild Lands.

It was of course a front, clearly so as the first action of the board was to purchase a mothballed Vanguard Class Battleship, the HMS... WLTCS Protector and staff it with a ‘retired’ Wintrees Crew.

Then they started putting the word out,
Wild Lands Trading Company are recruiting independent ships, crews and guns for hire for service with the Company in the Wild Lands of Sigma Epsilon. Service will be compensated in both prize money and a percentage of trade revenue from Company trading ships.

Applicants are to muster at the Space Station Wild Endeavour.

They were going to bring the fight to the scum of the galaxy and claim the frontier for the Colonies.

OOC: Play anything you like, pirates, slavers (there are some primitive settlements on some of the planets in the region), traders... mercenaries... covert government interests... anything you want frankly. All I would ask is that its kept as a small ship affairs and nothing overt, such as sending a fleet in. The WLTCS Protector is going to be the power in these here waters. Past that, go wild. Want to be a native chief on one of the planets getting harassed by slavers, do it.

I’ll introduce Pirates etc if we need to balance the sides.
