History: The kingdom was settled approximately seven hundred years ago. The people were a migratory proto-Asian group that already had a developed written and spoken language before settlement. Much of the successive centuries have been marked by internal class struggle between aristocrats and powerful warlords. In later years, the kingdom was finally aggregated into a single monarchial rule, headed by an emperor and supported by the stronger warlords. The nobles and aristocrats still maintain a presence in society as court officials and regional magistrates.
Culture: The main populace lives an agrarian lifestyle, and their personal beliefs reflect this in their various harvest and seasonal deities. There are a few large cities, however, and fishing is a major industry, both internally and as an export.
Beliefs: While the people of the kingdom worship many different deities, there is none that is revered more than Ryuji, the Dragon God. According to legend, it is he who created the isles. In a titanic fight with the White Tiger God, drops of the Dragon’s blood fell into the sea, crystallizing and becoming the Ryuji Isles. As ruler of the sea, he is especially revered by those who live on the coastline and fishermen.
Government: The main spiritual and political director is Emperor Hayato, who’s dynastic line claims ancestry to Ryuji. Below him is his Council, made primarily of the most powerful warlords and nobles in the kingdom. These men delegate authority down to regents and magistrates, who deal with regional and local administrative issues. Each warlord commands his own separate military, but each is directly in control of the Emperor, and only he may create and maintain a naval force. Therefore, the warrior class (samurai) have a unique place in governmental hierarchy, seemingly only answerable to their various masters and regents.
